Rahul Gandhi’s (politically) hot jacket

Rahul Gandhi’s ‘suit-boot ki sarkar’ comment about Prime Minister Modi came back to haunt him on Wednesday when BJP’s Meghalaya unit claimed in a tweet that the Congress president wore a jacket from British apparel major Burberry priced at a little over Rs 63,000. Gandhi, however, clarified that the jacket was a “gift”.In 2015, Gandhi had mocked Modi after he wore a suit with his name finely embroidered in stripes to meet then US president Barack Obama. The suit, which BJP had claimed was a gift, was later bought for over 4.3 crore by a Surat businessman in an auction.”So @OfficeOfRG, soot(pun intended!)-boot ki sarkar with black money fleeced from Meghalayan State exchequer by rampant corruption? Instead of singing away our woes, you could have given a report card of your inefficient govt in Meghalaya! Your indifference mocks us!” BJP’s Meghalaya unit tweeted.Gandhi, who is on a two-day tour of the poll-bound state, had attended the party’s rock concert in Shillong to reach out to young voters. BJP said his attendance at the rock concert was a “distraction” tactic. “Rock concert distraction tactics by the @OfficeOfRG to take away focus of Meghalayan voters from real issues on ground! A prince can fuss over ‘fuddy-duddy chopper’ rides & cancel his Tura trip, but ever wondered how people in Meghalaya travel,” the BJP tweeted. An unfazed Gandhi fired his “suit-boot ki sarkar” salvo at Modi afresh, saying he was always found in the company of people attired in suits and not those who are poor. “You will not see him (Modi) hug a poor person, talk to a poor person or even engage with a poor person. You will see him with others. There is a particular distance he maintains with the poor people which he does not with Mr Obama or others,” he said in Shillong. “The fact of the matter is that he (Modi) is still a suit-boot person. He has not done anything….,” Gandhi added.North East incharge for BJP, Ram Madhav, too took potshots at Gandhi. “Congress doesn’t understand popular sentiment in North East 2day. 4 states rejected Congress already n Meghalaya ready to do d same now. Congress not even in reckoning in Tripura n Nagaland. Cong left NE poor n underdeveloped while their leaders roam around in 70K jackets.” he tweeted. The controversy drew a sharp reaction from Congress leader Renuka Chowdhury. She said, “Their frustration is directly proportionate to the rising popularity of Rahul Gandhi. Rahul Gandhi connects with the young. So, this idle and suit-boot ki sarkar has no right to talk about it.”Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Sujrewala also put his weight behind the party president, saying, “This matter is so superfluous that it needs no comment. The BJP government, led by Narendra Modi, has been exposed as a suit-boot-ki-sarkar earlier. They are overcome with the intoxication of power; it’s shameless.”

Errol D’souza named new IIM-A director

Professor Errol D’souza has been appointed as the new IIM-A director. Brushing aside any controversy regarding the appointment of the new Director of Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, two days before the IIM Bill comes into effect, the HRD Ministry called it a “routine appointment”.The appointment of Professor D’Souza as the Director on Tuesday gained significance in light of the IIM Bill coming into effect just two days after the appointment. The IIM Bill gives freedom to institutes to appoint Directors on their own, without any government control. Prior to accepting this position, D’Souza served as a Professor of Economics and the Dean of Faculty at the Institute.”The names were already given by the institute and the selection was made on the basis of those names only. It is just a routine appointment, there is nothing controversial about it,” said a senior official in HRD Ministry.Chairman of the IIM-A Board, Kumar Mangalam Birla also sent out a letter on Wednesday, announcing the appointment of D’Souza. In his letter, he thanked his colleagues who participated in the selection process. “Prof. D’Souza brings experience and a track record which will be invaluable in meeting the Institute’s goals and objectives. I would like to thank my colleagues who participated in the selection process. Their efforts are deeply appreciated,” Birla wrote in his letter.Former Director of IIM-A Ashish Nanda resigned as a Director in the month of April last year, citing personal reasons. The institute did not have a full-time Director since then.RACE TO THE TOPThe IIM Bill will come into effect two days after the appointment The Bill gives freedom to institutes to appoint Directors on their own The names were given by the institute

EOW plans to name & shame tainted builders

The Housing Unit of the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Mumbai police department is preparing a list of builders involved in alleged mass cheating in the Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai and Palghar areas. The list will be published on public forums and awareness programmes will be conducted so that people know of their dodgy reputation and don’t get trapped in fraudulent schemes.According to EOW, the list will include builders accused of cheating homebuyers by offering lucrative schemes and delaying possession of flats. The EOW has also filed cases against builders violating Floor Space Index (FSI) norms. That list includes at least 60 small and big builders.”Apart from making the list public, we will also spread awareness about the modus operandi of such builders,” said an EOW officer, adding, “Once a buyer is cheated by a builder, it takes a long time for him or her to recover the money as the related trial and returning of money takes at least five years.”EOW is also cracking down on builders who sell one flat to multiple people and later shut down their offices.”Awareness programs will be conducted at housing expos,” says police inspector Santosh Raut of EOW, “Our aim is to prevent home buyers from being duped in the name of lucrative schemes. Also, it is important that all agencies come together to crack down on fraudulent builders and construction companies.”

TMC not keen on Cong alliance in Tripura

The Congress’s bid to enter an alliance with the Trinamool Congress in Tripura is most likely to fall flat, with the TMC being unhappy with what the Congress has to offer. When they released their list of candidates for Tripura, the Central leaders in the Congress gave tickets to more than 56 candidates in the 60 seats it is contesting, and said that four names will be let out later. However, days before that, the party sent a prominent state leader as an emissary to West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, who seemed positive and open to the alliance. The Congress’s offer was that the parties will enter into a seat-sharing basis and that the party will hand over five or six seats to TMC. Of these, one seat was to be reserved for SC and ST candidates, while the remaining were to be of general candidates. All the seats were to be in the tribal belt. Further, the Congress’s condition was that the alliance will work only if Mamata herself campaigns in the state. This was to ensure that the Bengal CM thaws away into the CPI (M)’s Bengali vote-bank in the state. The talks had also presumably reached a high level. However, with the February 3 deadline for the withdrawal of nominations in the state, it is likely that the alliance will not work out. A TMC leader, unwilling to be quoted, said that the party is unhappy with the Congress’s arrogance over the matter.“They have not budged an inch, and are not willing to comply to some of our demands,” said the leader. In the state, where 56 of the 60 seats were won by CPI (M), Congress has four MLAs. Congress MLA Ratan Lal Nath along with Mahila Congress president Himani Debbarma joined BJP in December.FALLING FLATA TMC leader said the party is unhappy with the Congress’s arrogance over the matter. “They have not budged an inch and are not willing to comply to some of our demands,” he said.

Fall from auto during theft kills 65-year-old in Mumbai

A senior citizen, who slipped into a coma after she fell off a running auto-rickshaw when a biker snatched her chain in Vakola, passed away during treatment. Kanchan Kudalkar (65) was riding in an auto rickshaw on January 16 when the incident took place near Vakola signal in Santa Cruz. The Vakola police have registered a case and are probing the incident. An unidentified biker overtook the auto and the pillion rider snatched Kudalkar’s mangalsutra so forcefully that the senior citizen fell off the running three-wheeler.The chain snatchers, as well as the auto driver, immediately fled from the spot as Kudalkar got hurt grievously and became unconscious. The police was informed and Kudalkar was immediately rushed to a private hospital in Thane, where she succumbed to her injuries on Monday.”We received a call from a passerby saying an injured woman was lying on the road,” said a police officer from Vakola police station. “We did not know whether it was an accident or something else as the auto driver had fled the spot. As the auto driver also disappeared, we suspect that he is involved in the crime. We are scrutinising CCTV footage of the area and will track down the accused soon.”Meanwhile, Kudalkar’s daughter-in-law expressed discontent over the slow progress of the case, saying, “It has been over two weeks and the police has failed to trace the accused. She suffered severe trauma and was in a coma after the incident.”

PhDs from IITs to serve as teachers in rural tech colleges

After doctors, it is now the turn of IITians to serve in rural areas. Over 1200 PhDs and MTech graduates from Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and National Institutes of Technology (NITs) will serve as faculty members in engineering colleges in rural areas in 11 states that are considered underdeveloped including Jharkhand, Bihar, MP, UP and others.Unlike doctors, there is no compulsion for techies to serve in rural colleges and as many as 5000 of them had applied to be a part of the rural teaching programme when the government invited applications for the same last year. This programme is a part of the Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP) under Ministry of Human Resource Development. TEQIP is a World Bank sponsored programme, which is being managed by MHRD in India. The budget for teachers is Rs. 375 crore for three years. These fresh-out-of-college techies will serve for three years as Assistant Professors before they venture into some other field, either a job as a teacher or with some private company. The experience that they gain from teaching in these institutes will however be counted if they serve as teachers. They have been appointed on contract basis. There are 293 PhDs and 932 MTech graduates among those who have been selected to teach in 53 engineering institutes. According to officials, more than one lakh students who are studying in these institutes will be benefitted by the scheme. These teachers would improve teaching learning process in these institutes apart from imbibing a start-up culture among students.“We are taking this step to ensure quality education in rural areas in states that are underdeveloped, specially those that were considered Bimaru at one point of time. Applications were invited from post graduates and PhDs in premier institutes like IITs, NITs and IISc to serve in rural areas as teachers and we got a very good response from them. Now 1225 have already started teaching in colleges in underdeveloped districts,” said HRD minister Prakash Javadekar.BOOST FOR EDUOver 1,200 PhDs and MTech graduates from Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and National Institutes of Technology (NITs) will serve as faculty members in engineering colleges in rural areas in 11 states considered underdeveloped including Jharkhand, Bihar, MP, UP

Kasganj violence | No politics over my dead child, says Mother of victim

A shaken Sangeeta Gupta, mother of Chadan Gupta killed in Kasganj’s communal violence, is dejected with the idea of people wanting to prove their patriotism if it triggers clashes and takes a young life.”I won’t let anyone celebrate Republic Day or Independence Day in the future if this is the result,” she said, sitting on the floor at her residence with her bandaged head, surrounded by relatives, neighbours and teachers of the college where Chandan studied. She had banged her head against the floor multiple times, grieving the death of her youngest child.Asking for the ‘madness’ to end, she said there should be no politics over her dead son. “Politicians must stop the violence and not let this take a communal colour for vote bank politics.” “I know the route to Delhi, if needed, whether I lose my life in the process, it doesn’t matter anymore,” she said. Dressed in a blue saree with her hands crossed, she howled in pain and anger. Chandan was the youngest of three siblings. His sister Kirti is studying in Delhi, while his brother Vivek is working in Kasganj. The siblings showed videos of Republic Day when a Tiranga Yatra was carried out. While people in Kasganj have various opinions on what happened, most say it was a pre-planned attack. Some even say that social media was also responsible for this.”There were various posts on social media before the event, indicating a communal divide and hate mongering. The administration was aware as well but no steps were taken. In fact when the initial fight happened at Baddu Nagar, and the police was informed, everything could have stopped there,” said Saleem Khan (name changed), who resides near Chamundi Gate, where Chandan along with his friends entered the Muslim-dominated area.Normalcy is limping back to the town gripped in communal tension with people opening their shops and coming out on the streets in Prabhu Park area where Chandan’s family lives. However, fear is palpable among residents in Baddu Nagar, a Muslim ghetto where Chandan was shot dead. A woman who resides in the area said she has never in her life seen violence of this kind in the city.Chandan recently joined an NGO, Sankalp, and had organised blood donation camps at his college and carried out a tree plantation drive. Some youths from the Muslim community who had even worked with him and knew him were also shaken. “He was patriotic but if this is what is going to happen, no parents would let their children come out and celebrate Republic Day or Independence Day. The feeling of patriotism would die in the youth,” said Preet, Chandan’s aunt.

Don’t want India to become refugee capital, govt tells SC

The Centre on Wednesday submitted that it did not want India to become the refugee capital of the world in defence of allegations made by Rohingya refugees that Border Security Force (BSF) personnel were “pushing back” their compatriots at the borders with chilli spray and stun grenades.”We do not want India to become the refugee capital of the world. People from every other country will flood our country,” Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Tushar Mehta told a Bench led by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra.Mehta submitted this was not a matter where the court should intervene since the Centre was in talks with him and he should be allowed to take a decision. The bench that also comprised Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud have given Mehta time till March 7 to respond to the allegations made by the refugees who are being represented by advocate Prashant Bhushan.Arguing the case for the Centre, Mehta said the government was “constitutionally obliged” to decide on the Rohingya issue. “This is not a matter in which we can show any leniency,” Mehta added. However, Bhushan argued India had to honour its international humanitarian commitments and indulging in violence was contrary to its mandate. The refugees in the Indian camps are living in abject poverty and squalor, Bhushan pointed out. “The conditions are inhuman. There is no access to either schools or hospitals,” he said. However, Justice Chandrachud questioned whether the judicial standards in Indian court which was already acknowledging the humanitarian aspects of refugees already living on Indian soul is also applicable to those who were attempting to enter the country.Responding to this poser, senior advocate Rajeev Dhawan, an intervenor, said: “Somebody comes to your border and says ‘I am a refugee’. It has to be determined whether he is a refugee. He cannot be blindly pushed back… then what is the commitment of India to refugee determination? Several high courts have upheld the right to refugee determination. Let the government deal with it diplomatically, but this court should also decide on its own.”Senior advocate Ashwini Kumar also representing the refugees said “We cannot push them back to the jaws of death” and added that “minimum humanitarian morality” should be shown to the refugees at the border. “You cannot deny a man his right to life. The Supreme Court has to intervene as the ultimate protector of life,” Kumar submitted. However, representing the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), senior advocate Gopal Subramanium, said the issue of how to deal with the refugees at the border must be diplomatically resolved. The top court was hearing a batch of petitions that sought a stay on the proposed deportation of the alleged 40,000-strong Rohingya community from India. Several petitions seeking the expulsion of the refugee community are also being heard in the top court.

Shopian firing: Army says troops acted in self defence

Seemingly upset over the naming of an Army officer in the First Information Report (FIR) in the Shopian killing case, Northern Army Commander Lieutenant General Devraj Anbu on Wednesday said the troops acted in self-defence and the police should have filed a generic FIR.The remarks come on the day when Jammu and Kashmir Police incorporated the version of the army in the FIR to investigate the matter thoroughly from all angles. The army commander’s statement also came at a time when death toll in Saturday’s army firing rose to three, after another injured civilian of Shopian succumbed in the hospital.Rayees Ahmad had suffered grievous wounds when army troops opened fire at a group of stone pelters at Ganawpora village in Shopian on Saturday. He was shifted to Sher-I-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences in Srinagar where he succumbed at 3 AM on Wednesday.”It is an unfortunate thing. Probably, a generic FIR should have been filed to come to conclusion as to what exactly happened. They have probably prematurely put the name of an individual. I am sure over a period of time, when they investigate, the truth will come out,” said Lieutenant General Anbu. The police has registered a case under Section 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder) and 336 (endangering life) of Ranbir Penal Code (RPC) against the troops of 10 Garhwal unit, led by a Major.Northern Army Commander noted that the troops responded in self defence after they were provoked to ultimate.”We have done our own enquiry and we are sure that we responded only after being provoked to the ultimate. It is in self defence and protection of the property of the government that has been wrested on us. I do not find anything to really fear. In the coming days, the investigation will prove this. We don’t have much to worry on this,” he said.Lieutenant General Anbu hoped that everything will be cleared once the investigation begins. “I feel this is the initial step (lodging FIR). They have just lodged an FIR and the investigation is yet to commence. Probably everything will pan out in the investigation, notwithstanding what the state government has done,” he said. The army commander noted that they have been very professional and have always discharged their duty with conviction.”The version army gave the next day (after the firing incident) has been added to the same file. FIR is the same and investigation is underway,” Ambarkar Shriram Dinkar, Superintendent of Police, Shopian, told DNA.Two youth — Javiad Ahmad Bhat and Suhail Javaid Lone — were killed when troops of 10 Garhwal unit fired at a stone pelting mob at Ganawpora village on Saturday. Seven army men, including Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO), were injured in the stone pelting on their convoy.2 YOUTHS KILLEDTwo youths — Javiad Ahmad Bhat and Suhail Javaid Lone — were killed when troops fired at a stone-pelting mob. Kasganj case: Police arrests main accused

The police, on Wednesday, arrested the main accused for the murder of 22-year-old Abhishek Gupta, alias Chandan, who died during communal clashes in Western Uttar Pradesh’s Kasganj on Republic Day, as the state government sent a detailed report to the Union Home Ministry on the violence. The UP government reportedly said that it was probing if the trouble was pre-planned in Kasganj, five hours from State Capital Lucknow. “We have sent a report on the violence, and steps taken to restore peace. Details of steps taken to punish the culprits have also been furnished to the Union Home Ministry,” a UP government official said.Gupta died of gunshot wounds in clashes following stone-pelting by a mob on a motorcycle rally taken out to celebrate Republic Day on Friday, organised by Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), setting off a chain of violence that continued intermittently till Tuesday. At least three shops, two buses and a car were torched in clashes, resulting in more than a hundred arrests.”Saleem Javed, the main accused, has been nabbed,” Sanjeev Gupta, Inspector General of Police (Aligarh Range) said, on a day when cops refused permission to VHP’s Tiranga Yatras across the state. His two brothers — Waseem and Naseem — and 17 others have been charged with murder and under other sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).The police also cited law and order apprehensions and stopped a Congress delegation from entering the restive district that mostly remained shut on Wednesday. The police said normalcy was slowly returning to the violence-hit town where security personnel have intensified patrolling in sensitive areas.Cases of communal violence in Kasganj are shameful and a blot on the state, and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s government must take steps to ensure that they do not happen again, Governor Ram Naik had said on Monday in stinging remarks.Adityanath responded on Tuesday and said that his government was committed to providing security to each and every citizen, and promised strict action against perpetrators of the violence.VHP urged Adityanath on Wednesday to grant martyr status to Gupta. Demanding a government job for a member of his family, VHP also requested Adityanath to give a compensation of Rs 50 lakh and a house to the kin of the deceased. VHP further asked Adityanath to give orders to free all Hindu youth who have been arrested by the police following the violence.

I won’t leave BJP, it can expel me if it wants: Yashwant Sinha

Disgruntled BJP leader Yashwant Sinha said he would not part ways with the saffron party, but it can throw him out if it wished so.Sinha, who launched a political platform ‘Rashtra Manch’ recently to take on the NDA-led central government, said being a citizen of India was a bigger thing than being a BJP member.”I will not leave the party, but if it wishes, it can expel me,” he told reporters here. The former finance minister said he had taken up the cause of farmers in his capacity as a citizen, adding that his opposition was not to a person or a party but to policies.Rashtra Manch is a a movement of farmers and unemployed people, Sinha said, adding that those sitting in Delhi and Bhopal were unaware of farmers’ plight.”Investigating agencies are being used against people who think differently. Due to this, outside of the BJP, an atmosphere of fear is prevailing in the entire country,” he alleged. The senior BJP leader said the latest Economic Survey refereed to unemployment, education-related woes and farmers’ problems.”These problems have not crept up overnight…the government has failed on these counts in the last three years,” the BJP veteran said.Sinha would be taking part in a farmers’ agitation against a proposed power project in Narsinghpur district of Madhya Pradesh tomorrow. He had also taken part in a protest on December 22.

He should be accorded the status of a martyr.” Gupta said.Mohammed Akhlaq was lynched in Dadri in Uttar Pradesh by a mob of cow vigilantes who suspected him of consuming beef. The incident had caused a nation-wide outrage.Meanwhile, senior member of All India Muslim Personal Law Board Zafaryab Jilani said, that even those who had played a role in the demolition of Babri Masjid were compensated by the Mulayam Singh Yadav government, when they had died.”Some people had them objected to it, but I did not. I was of the opinion that the financial assistance was for the family members. If the condition of the (Chandan Gupta’s) family is same as that of Akhlaq’s family, then state government can help this family. I have no objection,” he added

Are BSF stopping Rohingya refugees from entering India? SC asks Centre

The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed the Centre to file a response on the plea that alleged that the Border Security Force (BSF) is stopping Rohingya refugees from entering India. The three judge apex court, comprising of Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice A M Khanwilkar and Justice D Y Chandrachud sought a response from Centre.Counsel Prashant Bhushan, who is appearing for one of the petitioners, Mohammed Sallimullah, apprised the apex court that the Rohingyas who want to come to India should not be pushed back by the BSF.Bhushan said that the BSF are allegedly using chilli powder to push them. And that this kind of act is gross violation of the international conventions on refugees.Meanwhile, appearing for the Centre, Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta requested the court to not meddle in as the “constitutionally empowered executive was seized of the matter and the diplomatic process is on to deal with the situation”.The Rohingya immigrants, who fled to India after violence in the Western Rakhine state of Myanmar, have settled in Jammu, Hyderabad, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi-NCR and Rajasthan.More than 600,000 Rohingya are languishing in Bangladeshi refugee camps after fleeing a brutal Myanmar army campaign launched in late August.Meanwhile, the UN has said the scorched-earth operation, which has left hundreds of villages burned to ash in northern Rakhine state, amounts to ethnic cleansing.Noted lawyer and senior Supreme Court advocate, Prashant Bhushan, appearing for one of the petitioners, Mohammed Sallimullah, submitted to the Apex Court that those Rohingyas who want to come to India should not be pushed back by the BSF. The force is allegedly using chilli powder to push them. He said this kind of alleged act is gross violation of the international conventions on refugees.

Education for all: 1,200 graduates from IITs, NITs to teach engineering colleges in rural India

Over 1,200 graduates from premier institutions like IITs and NITs have been selected to teach in 53 state-run engineering colleges in backward areas across 11 states and Union Territories for three years, Union minister Prakash Javadekar said today.”This is the first time such a measure has been taken to improve the quality of education in backward areas. With the initiative, more than one lakh engineering students in the most backward areas would be benefited with better quality education,” he told reporters here. Each of the faculty will be paid Rs 70,000 per month with the government spending about Rs 375 crore for the move. The HRD minister said up to 60% of faculty strength was lying vacant in these colleges, which failed to attract qualified teachers.”A public appeal was given to M Tech and PhD students from the premier institutions to work in the backward areas and serve the nation. There was an overwhelming response to the call and more than 5,000 highly-qualified persons applied,” the minister?said. The initiative is part of the Technical Education Quality Improvement Project (TEQIP-III) for improving the quality of engineering graduates at a cost of Rs 2,300 crore, to be implemented during the three-year period till 2020.Javadekar said % of 1,225 teachers were selected from premier institutions like the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs), and Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), with 24% of them holding PhDs.As many as 301 teachers will head to 11 institutes in Rajasthan, 210 to seven institutes in Bihar, 194 to seven institutes in Madhya Pradesh and 191 to six institutes in Jharkhand.Other institutes for which the faculty has been selected include Assam, Jammu and Kashmir, Odisha, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the minister added.

Navi Mumbai airport may take 5 years to be operational: MoS Jayant Sinha

Minister of State for Civil Aviation Jayant Sinha today said his ministry will try to enhance the capacity of the congested Mumbai airport in medium-term, as the one being built in Navi Mumbai could take “four to five years” to become operational. The implementing agency City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) has been claiming that the first phase of Navi Mumbai airport with 10-million per annum capacity would be operational by 2021.The private partner for the Navi Mumbai International Airport is the GVK Group which also runs the current airport in the city.Addressing the second day of the annual CAPA (Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation) summit through a video link, Sinha said, “Mumbai remains the most bottlenecked single-runway airport due to which aviation growth is a concern. There is no quick way to add capacity until the Navi Mumbai airport comes up in the next four to five years”.He said in the meanwhile the ministry will try to enhance the capacity at the Mumbai airport. But he did not offer any details. The Mumbai airport has already crossed its installed capacity of 40 million passengers. Last year, it handled over 45 million passengers. The city airport is the busiest single runway airport in the world, handling around 970 flights a day or close to one aircraft movement per 65 seconds.Speaking on the efforts made by the government to boost aviation, Sinha said six to eight helicopters will also be flying under regional connectivity scheme to link smaller cities soon.”Growth of the sector depends on two factors — the number of aircraft added by the airlines, and slots available in major airports,” he said.On CAPA’s complaint that bilateral pacts with other nations were hampering the domestic airlines’ international growth plans, the MoS said the government was not constraining international air traffic growth.”Slots are issued not so much as bilaterals. More important than slots are low-cost direct international flights and one way to achieve that is to use wide-body planes,” the minister noted.

BSF ‘pushing back’ Rohingyas; SC asks Centre to respond to plea

The Supreme Court on Wednesday asked the Centre to respond to a fresh plea by two Rohingya refugees, alleging that the BSF was using “chilli and stun grenades” to stop the refugees from entering India.A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra granted four weeks to the Centre to file its response to the interim application by the two Rohingya refugees, alleging that Border Security Force (BSF) was forcefully restraining fresh refugees, including children, disabled persons and pregnant women, from entering the Indian side. The two refugees had earlier approached the top court against the government’s decision to deport Rohingya Muslims to Myanmar. The bench, which also comprised Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud, said “an interlocutory application has been filed by counsel for the petitioners in Writ Petition …A copy of the said application has been served on the assisting counsel to Tushar Mehta, ASG appearing today for Union of India. The ASG shall file a response to the said application within four weeks. List the matters on March 7.”During the brief hearing, lawyer Prashant Bhushan, appearing for Mohammad Salimullah and Mohammad Shaqir, alleged that the BSF was pushing back hapless refugees through “inhumane and degrading treatment” and in clear violation of “the non refoulement principle of customary international law”.He said the Indian government must be prevented from stopping more Rohingyas from entering India because of the persecution faced by them in Myanmar.”India can’t be the refugee capital of the world. We will take action when the contingency arises. These matters are best left to the government to decide. How can we allow everyone to cross the border,” the ASG said.He opposed Bhushan’s submission saying it was not part of the pleadings of the main case and, moreover, the central government and its forces were performing their sovereign functions. He said it was not the complaint of petitioners that the refugees were being sent back and the government was taking diplomatic steps to solve the problem. The court should permit it to discharge constitutional functions.Bhushan alleged that the government had a policy to welcome Hindu and others community members, barring Muslims.Senior advocate Gopal Subramanium, appearing for National Human Rights Commission, said Rohingyas have a right to approach the court for enforcement of elementary rights like education, security and health care. The two refugees, in their fresh plea, have sought protection and welfare of Rohingyas in India against the August 8, 2017 proposal of the MHA directing all states and UTs to expeditiously initiate deportation process against illegal immigrants from Rakhine.”There is no government intervention to provide shelter and other basic amenities. By dismissing Rohingyas as illegal immigrants, the government has washed its hands off the problem,” the plea said.It also said that the right to adequate standard of living has been recognised in 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights and it must be secured for Rohingyas. It sought a direction to the BSF to file a compliance report directly through MHA regarding their strict adherence to not push back policy for Rohingya refugees.Meanwhile, the court ordered tagging a separate plea, filed by BJP leader Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay, favouring the Centre’s stand to identify and deport to Mayanmar around 40,000 illegal Rohingya Muslims staying here.Salimullah and Shaqir had approached the apex court opposing the Centre’s decision to deport over 40,000 refugees who came to India after escaping from Myanmar due to widespread discrimination, violence and bloodshed against the community there.Various other pleas, including those by ex-RSS ideologue and Rashtriya Swabhiman Andolan leader K N Govindacharya, the CPI(M) youth wing Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and the West Bengal child rights body have been filed in the apex court on the matter. The court had suggested to the Centre not to deport these refugees, but the Centre had urged that it should not be written in the order as anything coming on record would have international ramifications. The Rohingyas, who fled to India after violence in the Western Rakhine State of Myanmar, were settled in Jammu, Hyderabad, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi-NCR and Rajasthan.

Maharashtra: State to now compensate families of martyred soldiers with Rs 25 lakh

Families of martyred soldiers will now receive a compensation of Rs 25 lakh from the state government, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced here on Wednesday. He was speaking at an event organised to honour martyred soldiers and those who have received bravery awards.Union minister Nitin Gadkari, Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi were present besides Defence officials.”Sacrifice of soldiers cannot be measured in terms of money. Families of martyred soldiers used to initially receive Rs 8.5 lakh as compensation which was later increased to Rs 20 lakh after our government came to power. However, the state government will now provide Rs 25 lakh as compensation,” Fadnavis said. The chief minister said the country never worshipped prestige or power but valour and sacrifice. “Soldiers have both these qualities in them,” he said.”Nationalism is not just shown on January 26 and August 15. Not everybody can go and fight a war at the border, but what we can do is take an inspiration from our martyred soldiers and fight the wrong in our lives, which will be the biggest tribute to martyrs who die for us,” he said.

Medical college admission scam: Cong hails CJI for taking ‘principled position’ in Allahabad HC Judge case

The Congress today lauded CJI Dipak Mishra for taking a “principled position” in the case of Allahabad High Court judge Justice S N Shukla, who has been found guilty of misconduct by an internal probe into a medical college admission scam.”We certainly congratulate the Chief Justice of India for taking a principled position and it must apply to all cases,” party leader Kapil Sibal said.CJI Dipak Misra has recommended the removal of Shukla as part of an in-house procedure.Asked about the CPI(M)’s demand that the CJI be impeached in view of concerns raised by four senior judges of the Supreme Court, he said it was a serious matter.”The Left parties have spoken to us (on the issue). We are talking to other people too. It is a serious matter,” he added.Warning that democracy is at stake, four senior judges of the Supreme Court had on January 12 mounted a virtual revolt against the country’s chief justice, raising questions on “selective” case allocation and certain judicial orders, sending shock waves across the judiciary and polity. The four senior-most judges of the Supreme Court held a press conference to talk about the functioning of the top court saying the situation was “not in order” and many “less than desirable” things have taken place.Justice Jasti Chelameswar, who was accompanied by Justices Ranjan Gogoi, M B Lokur, and Kurian Joseph at the press conference, said they had met CJI Dipak Misra this morning and “raised issues affecting the institution”.They also referred to a letter that they had written to the CJI expressing concern on certain judicial orders passed by the Supreme Court. According to the four judges, these orders “adversely affected the overall functioning of the justice delivery system.”

Ex-Navy chief calls for independent inquiry in CBI judge BH Loya’s death

Former Navy chief Admiral (retd) L Ramdas has filed a plea in the Supreme Court seeking an independent inquiry by a panel of retired apex court judges and former police officers into the alleged mysterious death of special CBI judge B H Loya.Loya, who was hearing the sensitive Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case, had died of cardiac arrest in Nagpur on December 1, 2014, when he had gone to attend the wedding of a colleague’s daughter. Some members of Loya’s family had alleged foul play in his death.BJP chief Amit Shah was one of the accused in the Sheikh encounter case in which he was later discharged. The application, filed by Ramdas, has also sought a direction to the Centre to cooperate with the inquiry committee and provide the necessary documents. He has sought an independent probe, saying the statements made by Loya’s family members “have led to allegations of foul play coming to the surface” regarding the events that had transpired on the night he died.”It is therefore just and necessary that an independent probe be directed to be made,” the plea said.It further said that “the silence of individuals who were present during the final hours of Loya’s life coupled with institutional inaction to probe the circumstances of his death when it occurred in 2014 threatens these cherished ideals of independence of judiciary and the rule of law.” The plea said “a judicial probe” was needed in the case in order to uphold the image of judiciary and deliver justice to Loya’s family. It claimed that the death of a sitting judge hearing a sensitive case in an “unnatural manner” raises questions about the rule of law and requires to be properly probed by an independent agency. The petition also sought permission that anyone who had evidence to establish the circumstances of Loya’s death be allowed to appear before the multi-member panel and provide relevant information. The plea has also raked up the issue of transfer of CBI Judge J T Utpat, who was hearing the Sohrabuddin Sheikh case before Loya was transferred to that court. It has sought direction to the committee to probe into the reasons for the the “arbitrary transfer” of Utpat and submit a report to the court. The issue of Loya’s death had come under the spotlight in November last year after media reports quoting his sister had fuelled suspicion about the circumstances surrounding it. But Loya’s son had on January 14 this year said in Mumbai that his father died of natural causes.A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra is hearing the petitions which have sought probe into Loya’s death. The apex court had on January 22 restrained other high courts from entertaining any petition relating to Loya’s death and transferred to itself the petitions pending before the Bombay High Court. The matter is scheduled to come up for hearing in the Supreme Court on February 2.

Mamata Banerjee not to attend Opposition party meeting in Delhi tomorrow

West Bengal chief minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday said she would not attend tomorrow’s meeting of opposition parties called by Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi.Banerjee described it as a “routine meeting”.”I will not be able to attend the meeting tomorrow because of some other preoccupation,” Banerjee told reporters in the state Assembly here. She said it was a routine meeting which would be attended by Trinamool Congress Parliamentary party leaders.Gandhi is likely to chair the meeting of opposition leaders to plan a joint strategy for the Budget Session of Parliament. The meeting is slated to be held after the presentation of the Union Budget by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.Asked about the violence in Kasganj in Uttar Pradesh, Banerjee, “What has happened there is very unfortunate. Let peace be restored there”.”I am not like the BJP that I will criticise everything,” she added. To a question on the VHP’s demand that the family of Chandan Gupta, killed at Kasganj, be given Rs 50 lakh as compensation, Banerjee said, “I don’t know the details. If there is a communal situation, we don’t comment (on it).Let the state government take a decision on humanitarian grounds.”

Renuka Chowdhury claims Rahul Gandhi’s jacket costs Rs 700, BJP’s Tajinder Bagga Paytm’s her money to get one

On Monday, Cong leader Renuka Choudhary laughed the BJP’s claims that Rahul Gandhi was wearing an expensive jacket andsaid she could produce the same jacket for Rs. 700 for Prime Minister Narendra Modi if he wants, and added that ‘only I don’t have his measurements other than chappan inch chaati (56 inch chest).’Chaudhary said, ‘I don’t know whether to laugh or to cry on the desperation of the BJP. Are you saying that they have no other work than to sit and search rates’’ I can show you the same jacket for 700 rupees. If the Prime Minister wants it I can get one and send it to him other than 56-inch chest, I don’t have his measurements.’The images of Gandhi wearing the jacket gave fresh ammunition to the BJP to counter his famous ‘suit boot ki sarkaar’ jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government. Also readFata kurta to ₹60,000 jacket, poverty is a state of mind: Twitter reacts to Rahul Gandhi’s sartorial choiceMocking the BJP, Chaudhary said, ‘It is so funny that it is coming from the suit-boot sarkaar. A suit that was woven with his name on it and he wore it when the US president came (to India). And then they auctioned it for crores. This is the sarkaar that is questioning Rahul Gandhi’s jacket?’While there was a host of reactions to the comment, Delhi BJP spokesperson Tajinder Singh Bagga took matters forward regarding the Rs 700 jacket and went as far as to send Choudhary the money asking for a jacket in return. Also readSartorial Showdown: BJP and Congress tear into each other over Rahul Gandhi’s jacketTajinder Bagga put up a screenshot on Twitter which allegedly showed him sending the money via Paytm to Renuka Choudhary. Now we will have to wait and see if the Congress leader obliges. Earlier, the political arch rivals tore into each other after the Meghalaya unit of the BJP, in an apparent bid to get even with Rahul Gandhi over his “suit-boot” jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, claimed the Congress chief wore a jacket worth Rs 63,000 to a concert in Shillong yesterday.”So @OfficeOfRG, soot(pun intended!)-boot ki sarkar with black money fleeced from Meghalayan State exchequer by rampant corruption? Instead of singing away our woes, you could have given a report card of your inefficient govt in Meghalaya! Your indifference mocks us!,” the BJP’s Meghalaya unit tweeted. The party’s state unit also tweeted an image of a Burberry jacket, similar to the one that Gandhi wore, having a price tag of USD 995 (little over Rs 63,000).In another tweet, the BJP alleged the Congress government in Meghalaya was mired in corruption. It said instead of attending a musical event, Gandhi should have given a report card of the state government.Out on the hustings in the hill state, an unfazed Gandhi fired his “suit-boot ki sarkar” salvo at Modi afresh, saying he was always found in the company of people attired in suits and not those that are poor.”You will not see him (Modi) hug a poor person, talk to a poor person or even engage with a poor person. You will see him with others. There is a particular distance he maintains with the poor people which he does not with Mr Obama or others,” he told journalists in Shillong.”The fact of the matter is that he (Modi) is still a suit-boot person. He has not done anything….,” Gandhi said. The tweet suggesting that the jacket worn by Gandhi was bought with black money, drew a sharp reaction from Congress leader Renuka Chowdhury, who alleged the BJP was leading a “suit-boot ki sarkar” at the Centre, and had no moral authority to question Gandhi. She said the saffron party was “frustrated” due to Gandhi’s “rising popularity”.Chowdhury accused the Modi government of being “idle”, and said it should rather focus on issues such as the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, and rising prices of fuel and vegetables.”Their frustration is directly proportionate to the rising popularity of Rahul Gandhi. Rahul Gandhi connects with the young. So, this idle and suit-boot ki sarkar has no right to talk about it,” she said.Gandhi had attended the concert in Shillong, apparently to reach out to the young voters.Dressed in blue denim trousers and a black jacket, he had urged the youth to love and respect each other to make the country strong.Gandhi had mocked Modi with his “suit-boot ki sarkar” jibe after he wore a suit with his name finely embroidered on the stripes for a meeting with the then US president Barack Obama. The suit was later auctioned and bought for over 4.3 crore by a Surat businessman. The BJP, which intends to give a tough fight to the ruling Congress in the Meghalaya Assembly elections, also accused the Congress of distracting voters by organising a soiree.”Rock concert distraction tactics by the @OfficeOfRG to take away focus of Meghalayan voters from real issues on ground! A prince can fuss over ‘fuddy-duddy chopper’ rides & cancel his Tura trip, but ever wondered how people in Meghalaya travel,” the BJP tweeted. With inputs from PTI

Kashmiri separatist leader Shabir Shah denied bail by court

A Delhi court on Wednesday denied bail to Kashmiri separatist leader Shabir Shah in a 2007 money- laundering case, noting the Enforcement Directorate’s charge that he took money from Pakistan to create unrest in the Valley.Additional Sessions Judge Sidharth Sharma, who had in August last year denied the relief to Shah citing the ongoing probe, dismissed his fresh bail plea. The court took note of the submission by special public public prosecutor N K Matta, appearing for ED, that “Shah is involved in channelising illegal money sourced from Pakistan, avoiding banking channels, to fund terror organisations in J and K and other parts of the country and if released on bail, he may use his influence in threatening the witnesses.” The agency said that further investigation was going on and the properties were being identified and if granted the relief, the accused, who was arrested on July 26 last year in the case, will not be available for the trial.”ED is trying to establish the money trail. Call records leading to Pakistan is being are being scrutinised including mails and the list of donors who paid money to Shah is to be identified and examined. If released on bail at this juncture, the entire effort of the ED to unearth the large conspiracy would be a futile exercise,” it said.In his bail application moved through advocate M S Khan, the accused told the court that there were no possibility of him influencing the witnesses because most of them are either police or ED officials.”The other witnesses are Shah’s family members whom he can influence even while being in the the jail,” Khan said.He said Shah was a permanent resident of Jammu and Kashmir and a prominent politician and there was no likelihood of him escaping from the justice.”There is no connection between me and the co-accused Aslam Wani from whom the money was recovered following which the present case was registered,” Khan said, adding that the probe into the case was complete as the agency has filed its charge sheet. The court had on August 22 last year rejected Shah’s earlier bail plea after the ED said it was probing whether he had received money from countries such as Pakistan to promote terrorism in India. On November 15, the court had framed money laundering charges under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) against Shah and alleged hawala dealer Mohammad Aslam Wani, also in the judicial custody, in the case. Both the accused have pleaded not guilty and claimed trial. The gency told the court that now 36-year-old Wani had come to Delhi from Srinagar “at the directions of Shah” sometime in April, 2003 and that was the first time he had met him. Wani was arrested by the ED on August 6 from Srinagar. The ED alleged that Wani was asked by Shah to “work for him (on a commission basis) in collecting hawala money from Delhi and deliver to him at Srinagar”.The case dates back to August 2005 in which the Delhi Police’s Special Cell had earlier arrested Wani.Wani had then claimed that he had given Rs 2.25 crore to Shah, following which the ED had registered a case under PMLA against the duo in 2007. He was arrested with Rs 63 lakh, allegedly received through ‘hawala’ channels from the Middle East, and a cache of ammunition, on August 26, 2005.In 2010, a Delhi court had cleared Wani of terror funding charges in the 2005 case but convicted him under the Arms Act.

Kasganj violence: Despite blanket ban on netas from entering district, BJP MLA from Andhra visits Chandan Gupta’s family

Although the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh has banned the entry of political leaders in riot-hit Kasganj, a BJP MLA from Hyderabad, T Raja, was allowed to meet family members of Chandan Gupta, who was killed in communal clashes on January 26.While T Raja was allowed to enter Kasganj despite a ban, a Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) delegation led by state party president Raj Babbar was denied permission on Wednesday to enter the district. Earlier, a request from Samajwadi Party leaders to meet Chadan’s family was also turned down. The District Magistrate RP Singh refused to make any comment on allowing BJP MLA to enter Kasganj while refusing to give permission to Raj Babbar and others. After meeting the family, T Raja demanded that the Uttar Pradesh government crackdown on ‘traitors hiding in many parts of the state.’ “They hoist Pakistan flags and raise pro-Pak slogans to create communal tension. I am sure that many AK-47s would be recovered from their hide-outs during the crackdown,” he claimed.Raja, who is also a patron of Sri Ram Sena, claimed that he was asked a series of questions by the family members. “They asked me whether it was a crime to take out a Tiranga yatra and asked whether they should hoist the tricolour in Pakistan, since it was a problem in India,” he alleged.Earlier, the prime accused in the Gupta’s murder was arrested as the strife-torn western Uttar Pradesh town, which saw communal clashes last week, moved towards normalcy despite tension in some pockets, officials said. The UP government submitted a report on the incidents in Kasganj to the Union Home ministry conveying that the police were probing the violence and whether it was pre-planned, an official said.”Saleem, the main accused, has been nabbed,” IG, Aligarh range, Sanjeev Gupta said.

Delhi High Court asks govt to examine new Rs 50, Rs 200 notes

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday asked the Centre and the RBI to examine the new currency notes and coins, saying the visually-impaired were facing hardship in identifying and using them.A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar told the Centre and the RBI that they should examine the new currency notes of Rs 200 and Rs 50 denominations as the visually-impaired people were finding it difficult to use them due to their size and the tactile marks.”This issue is something which needs to be resolved among yourselves. You (government, RBI and the petitioner here) sit together and sort it out,” the bench said, adding that it is difficult for the visually-impaired to identify them, also due to the change of size of these notes. The bench observed that the authorities should have consulted some visually impaired experts and others who have worked in this field. It asked Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Sanjay Jain, who was representing the Centre, why cannot they make the size of the currency as it used to be earlier. The ASG told the court that they had designed the currency after considering every aspect. The court asked the Centre to place its view before it on the next date of hearing on February 16.The court had earlier refused to stay the printing and circulation of the new Rs 50 notes, issued on August 18, 2017.The court was hearing PILs filed by three advocates, a company secretary and NGO, All India Confederation of Blind, who had sought a change in the new currency notes to make them easily identifiable and differentiable for the visually impaired. The PIL by advocate Rohit Dandriyal sought directions to the authorities to withdraw the Rs 50 notes which do not have any identification marks and stop printing them.He said that, according to the RBI, a special feature has been introduced on the left of the watermark window on all notes, except the Rs 10 denomination ones.”This feature is in different shapes for various denominations. For example, a vertical rectangle denotes a Rs 20 note, a square means Rs 50 (in older notes), triangle and circle for Rs 100, a diamond denoted the Rs 1,000 currency which is not a legal tender now,” the advocate’s PIL said. The petition by the NGO said the visually impaired people were facing hardship in identification, usage and transaction of the new currency notes of Rs 2000, Rs 500, Rs 200 and Rs 50 denominations.Maintaining that the size of old and new notes were different, the NGO also sought replacement of coins of Rs 10, Rs 5, Rs 2 and Re 1 saying these were of a similar structure.

Gurmehar Kaur says she will always stand for peace, no matter how ‘anti-national’ that makes her

Celebrities and others who trolled her and attempted to make her look bad only ended up exposing themselves, says Delhi University student and author Gurmehar Kaur, who was at the centre of a national debate on free speech and dissent last year. The 20-year-old Lady Shri Ram College student, daughter of army martyr Captain Mandeep Singh, said she would always stand for peace, “no matter how anti-national” that makes her.The literature student had launched the social media campaign “I am not afraid of ABVP”, following the violence in Ramjas College over their seminar “Cultures of Protest” last year. She was trolled online for her stand against campus violence and for appearing in an earlier recorded video in which she was seen holding a placard that read, “Pakistan did not kill my father but war did”.Former cricketer Virendra Sehwag, Olympic medallist Yogeshwar Dutt and wrestler sisters Geeta and Babita Phogat were among the celebrities who took to social media to question her views.Sehwag shared an image of him holding a placard saying, “I did not score two triple centuries. My bat did. They tried to make me look bad, but ended up exposing themselves. I was a huge Virender Sehwag fan, now I am not. I lost all the affection and respect for him, Gurmehar told PTI in an interview. That can be heartbreaking, but at the end of the day they are just men. And as a woman you face it a lot… that people try to patronise you, try to bring you down, she said.Gurmehar said the row proved to be a blessing in disguise as she now has a platform to express her opinions and people who want to voice their views look up to her. They think that if I can do it, so can they. They look up to me as an example I was always a tough person. But with the controversy surrounding me I have only proved how tough I am, she said. She added that she would not let anyone define nationalism for her, asserting that it was the people who decide what love for the country means, not the establishment.Gurmehar also spoke at the recent Jaipur Literature Festival where her first book, Small Acts Of Freedom, was launched by Congress leader and author Shashi Tharoor. The book is a memoir, telling the story of three generations of women Gurmehar’s maternal grandmother, her mother and herself. The book is a collection of the most important stories of my life. The difficult task was to refresh these memories I wanted to write this book since I was all of 12 years. I wanted to tell the story of stronger women. I wanted to share the memories of my dad to immortalise him, she said.Tharoor, who has authored 16 books, said it was wonderful that Gurmehar had written such a “remarkable book” at the age of 20.Describing her as a woman with a distinctive voice, he said at the launch, “She has the convictions that she fought about and cared about. And she has the courage to express those convictions. These are extraordinarily admirable qualities in today s India. The book, Gurmehar said, had always been in her head but it was the controversy that hastened the process of its completion and helped her publish it much earlier. It was a difficult book to write because she had to relive memories she would rather forget.I had to have tough conversations with my family. I was emotionally exhausted, she said.Gurmehar went for a 10-day Vipassana retreat to recover from what she described as a pretty dark time.I had 10 days to think about it. I didn’t want to surrender my freedom to anybody. I didn’t want a news channel or a newspaper to tell my story. I wanted to do it on my own.To me that is freedom, to not be coloured in narratives by other people, she said.It was a pretty dark time. I was getting threats of death and rape from everybody… I could not feel my body. I was numb, if anybody would have pricked me with a needle, I wouldn’t have felt it I don t want other women to go through it.These are scary times, Gurmehar said, adding that it is important for women to speak up and take that first step.”The people that I am surrounded with. I know we are a strong bunch of people, she said.

Rahul Gandhi is ‘interesting’ person, country has ‘sadly’ not seen enough of him: Tharoor

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said party president Rahul Gandhi is an “interesting” person with a tremendous intellectual curiosity, but the country “sadly” has not seen enough of him.He was replying to questions from students of the Delhi University’s Hindu College at the ‘Mushaira Literature Festival’ after delivering a lecture in a jam-packed auditorium.Asked about his opinion about the new party chief, Tharoor said, “Gandhi has grown up with ideas, perspectives, anxieties, and a degree of knowledge and vocabulary base that many of the youths will find congenial.”Gandhi has “thought very deeply about religion and matters of faith. He is a Shiv bhakt and seriously practices Buddhist Vipassana and can talk about differences between various schools of it and Hindu philosophy”, he said.Citing an anecdote, Tharoor said when all the political chatter was happening at the time of his elevation as the party’s vice president in Jaipur in January 2013, “Gandhi was seen explaining a new book released by inventor of ‘black swan theory’ Nassim Nicholas Taleb”.Tharoor said Gandhi “is an extremely interesting guy with a tremendous intellectual curiosity and is extraordinarily well-read. I say this because for a couple of years between my two ministerships, I sat directly behind him in Parliament.”Everyday we would chat and invariably the subjects he raised were about the books he was reading. That is the kind of the person he is and the rest of the country sadly has not seen it enough,” he added.Tharoor, a Lok Sabha member, said India was facing a choice between two different styles of leadership.”On the one hand we have a one-man-show. We have a hero on a white stallion cantering down to the appraisal saying he has all the answers to all the questions.”On the other hand, you got a guy who says I don’t know all the answers but I will come to you and listen and bring a group of experienced people to work together,” he said.Tharoor also hit out at the right-wing in the country and said traditionally the idea of the Right and Left emerged due to economic reasons, but today the right-wing was about “cultural nationalism”.Cultural nationalism, he said, was about people saying “we are more anchored in our religion and authentic national identity and, therefore, we are the real people of the country”.He said, “Because of such conviction, they make a dangerous mistake of identifying their party with the government and in turn with the nation. Therefore, those opposing will become anti-national.”The event was organised by the university’s student newspaper DU Beat and students’ representative body Hindu College Parliament.

Fata kurta to ?60,000 jacket, poverty is a state of mind: Twitter reacts to Rahul Gandhi’s sartorial choice

In an apparent retort to Rahul Gandhi’s suit-boot ki sarkar jibe, the BJP has claimed the Congress President wore a jacket worth USD 995 at a concert oragnised by his party in the poll-bound state while being “indifferent” to the woes of people. In a tweet, the BJP alleged the Congress government in Meghalaya was mired in corruption. It said instead of attending a musical event, Gandhi should have given a report card of the state government.”So @OfficeOfRG, soot(pun intended!)-boot ki sarkar with black money fleeced from Meghalayan State exchequer by rampant corruption? Instead of singing away our woes, you could have given a report card of your inefficient govt in Meghalaya! West Bengal presents farmer-friendly budget keeping an eye on Panchayat elections

West Bengal finance minister Dr Amit Mitra presented the state budget on Thursday at the Assembly and keeping in mind the Panchayat elections later this year, he announced a number of tax reliefs for rural Bengal. In the budget, stamp duty of properties in urban and rural areas have been lowered by 1%. “The stamp duty on all properties valued between Rs 40 lakh and Rs 1 crore will come down from 6% to 5% in rural areas and 7% to 6% in the urban areas,” he said.To help the tea industry, the state had proposed to waive income tax of tea gardens for the financial years 2018-19 and 2019-20. Education Cess and Rural Employment Cess have also been waived for tea gardens for 2018-19.Hitting out at the Centre, Dr Mitra said that demonetisation had hit rural economy adversely and thus to help them mutation fee for agricultural land sold for agricultural purposes, has been exempted fully. An amount of Rs 100 crore has been allotted to create a corpus fund in order to help farmers in times of contingencies when prices crash so that they do not have to sell their produce.Monthly pension of farmers has been raised from Rs 750 to Rs 1,000 and the number of recipients would be raised from 66,000 to 1,00,000. Also against the present 44,000 physically challenged people receiving an assistance of Rs 750 each, the number of recipients would be raised by another 200,000 and the amount would be raised to Rs 1000 each. An amount of Rs 250 crore has been allotted for the purpose.Later at a press conference Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee lauded the budget saying that equal importance has been paid to agriculture and industry. “While the Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS) had been put up to attract industrial investment in the state, the budget had been aimed at helping the agricultural sector,” she said. She elaborated how allotment for Kanyashree, one of her pet projects, has been raised and another ‘Rupashree’ had been introduced, according to which, a one-time assistance of Rs 25,000 would be given to the family of a girl with annual income up to Rs 1.5 lakh. Dr Mitra announced a budget allocation of Rs 1500 crore for Rupashree scheme.Asked if the budget was placed keeping in mind the forthcoming panchayat polls, she said, “The Centre does it. What they are likely to do on Friday is an election budget. They might make huge promises which are not likely to be fulfilled. I believe the Union government should come out with a white paper declaring how much black money they have managed to recover,” Banerjee said.

Check out pics and video of India’s third state-of-the-art Scorpene class submarine Karanj

The Indian Navy launched the third state-of-the-art Scorpene class submarine, Karanj, here today. Navy chief Admiral Sunil Lanba’s wife Reena Lanba launched the submarine, constructed by shipbuilder Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) here. The submarine will undergo rigorous tests for one year before it is commissioned, Admiral Lanba said.He called for introspection in the ship building business in view of the delay in the construction and commissioning of submarines.”I also believe some introspection is called for at this stage. The project (submarine construction at MDL) began 12 years ago. Notwithstanding the associated complexities, we need to make resolute efforts to increase the speed of construction and ensure timely delivery of the remaining submarines,” he said. Also readScorpene class submarine Karanj launched at Mumbai’s Mazagon Docks: 10 factsAlso readThird Scorpene class submarine INS Karanj launched at Mumbai’s Mazagon DocksHe said the role of the MDL was critical in this endeavour.”To keep the induction plan of the Navy on track with a focused approach, this premier yard (MDL) will be able to deliver the platforms on schedule,” he said.A contract with French company Naval Group was signed in 2005 for the supply of six submarines. The first submarine INS Kalvari was commissioned in December last year.In January last year, Khanderi, the second Scorpene class submarine, was launched.Lanba also announced that henceforth certification works would be completed at the MDL.”The launch of Karanj also marks a significant departure from the manning and training philosophy that we adopted for the first two submarines. From this third submarine onwards, you (MDL) would be fully self-reliant as far as training and certification processes are concerned,” he said.”Today all our 34 naval platforms and the ones under construction are being built by Indian shipyards. This sort of impetus also harbours well for the downstream industrial ecosystem,” he said.Talking to reporters after the launch, the Navy chief said, “The Kalvari class is miles ahead in stealth and technology compared to (that in) the neighbouring country.Every submarine at least takes a 12-month time for various tests before commissioning.”The first three submarines of Scorpene class are named Kalvari, Khanderi and Karanj. The remaining three (to be launched in the future) will be called Vela, Vagir and Vagsheer, a Navy spokesperson said.”Every nine months, we will have a launch of a submarine from the MDL,” he said.Asked about the future of the decommissioned aircraft carrier ‘Viraat’, Lanba said they have received a proposal from the Andhra Pradesh government which wants to convert the vessel into a maritime museum.”They are looking at a site near Visakhapatnam. They have appointed a company to make a detailed project report, which is being done. Once we have a concrete proposal, we can take it forward for Viraat,” he said.Prime Minister Narendra Modi last month commissioned the then first of the six Scorpene class submarines, the Kalvari, into the Navy and said its induction was a big step in India’s defence preparedness.Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had then said submarine building was a sophisticated and exacting craft which very few countries possessed in their industrial capacity.

At extended core commitee meeting, Mamata Banerjee lashes out at ‘gaddar’ Mukul Roy

At an extended core committee meeting of the Trinamool Congress, party supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee lashed out at former party MP Mukul Roy calling him ‘gaddar’ or traitor.“We are unable to contest elections properly at Tripura because of the paucity of funds. Parties like BJP which is in power at the Centre and Congress have huge amount of money. Even CPI(M) had amassed a lot of wealth which they are still spending. I am proud to say that we don’t have a lot of funds at hand. Moreover, it is for a ‘gaddar’ within our party who had joined BJP recently and had also engineered a defection of our party leaders in Tripura, to BJP,” she said. Roy had joined BJP in November 2017.She said that even when she was with the NDA or UPA government, she used to be petrified of cabinet meetings. “I used to think that the Centre would raise price, shut down some industries or adopt some anti-people policies. Here in Bengal people have the confidence that the TMC government will not resort to raising prices or tax to generate revenue. That is why we are so popular here,” Mamata added. Also readMamata Banerjee cautions authors against distortion of cultureShe asked party leaders to go all out ahead of the panchayat elections asking leaders to complete all the incomplete welfare projects for rural Bengal ahead of the elections. “There should be meeting, rallies and processions every weekend before board exams begin, against the Centre regarding issues relating 12,000 farmers’ suicide in Maharashtra, non-withdrawal of Financial Resolution and Deposit Insurance (FRDI) so far, why railway projects have been withdrawn and inflation,” she said. Also readFace of Oppn: TMC to push for Mamata Banerjee in meeting with leadersShe asked party members to be active on social networking sites to counter ‘fake and paid news’. “Parties like BJP are active on Facebook because they have hired people experts against a huge amount of money. We don’t have money but we have dedication. I ask you to counter fake and maligning news politically without resorting to profanity,” Mamata added.

Updated: Jan 31, 2018, 06:30 PM IST<!–end of articllftpbx–>Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has denounced a demand to have a separate state for Muslims, in an apparent reference to a top cleric’s suggestion made on Monday.”J&K was neither a party to the partition of our country nor did we support division on religious lines. We as a state opted for the opposite, but unfortunately are still paying the price. I strongly condemn any statement made asking for Muslims in India to demand a separate state,” the chief minister posted on Twitter, though she did not name anyone. On Monday, the deputy grand mufti of Jammu and Kashmir, Nasir-ul-Islam, had alleged that Muslims in the country were living a “pathetic” life and they should demand a separate state within India.”Muslims are being harassed under various pretexts such as love jihad and cow vigilantism…They are being targeted.”If it continues like this, then they should demand a separate country within India,” the cleric had told reporters.

Sartorial Showdown: BJP and Congress tear into each other over Rahul Gandhi’s jacket

This is one jacket over which both the BJP and the Congress are finding it hard to keep their shirts on.The political arch rivals tore into each other after the Meghalaya unit of the BJP, in an apparent bid to get even with Rahul Gandhi over his “suit-boot” jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, claimed the Congress chief wore a jacket worth Rs 63,000 to a concert in Shillong yesterday.”So @OfficeOfRG, soot(pun intended!)-boot ki sarkar with black money fleeced from Meghalayan State exchequer by rampant corruption? Instead of singing away our woes, you could have given a report card of your inefficient govt in Meghalaya! Your indifference mocks us!,” the BJP’s Meghalaya unit tweeted. Also readWatch | Can get jacket Rahul wore for PM for Rs 700, but don’t know his measurements except chest size: Renuka ChowdharyThe party’s state unit also tweeted an image of a Burberry jacket, similar to the one that Gandhi wore, having a price tag of USD 995 (little over Rs 63,000).In another tweet, the BJP alleged the Congress government in Meghalaya was mired in corruption. There is a particular distance he maintains with the poor people which he does not with Mr Obama or others,” he told journalists in Shillong. Also readIn Meghalaya, Rahul Gandhi attacks BJP; questions how many leadership positions are with women in RSS”The fact of the matter is that he (Modi) is still a suit-boot person. Also readIt was borrowed: Rahul Gandhi on his sartorial choice after BJP claims he wore a Rs 70,000-priced jacketShe said the saffron party was “frustrated” due to Gandhi’s “rising popularity”. Chowdhury accused the Modi government of being “idle”, and said it should rather focus on issues such as the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, and rising prices of fuel and vegetables.”Their frustration is directly proportionate to the rising popularity of Rahul Gandhi. Rahul Gandhi connects with the young. So, this idle and suit-boot ki sarkar has no right to talk about it,” she said.Gandhi had attended the concert in Shillong, apparently to reach out to the young voters.Dressed in blue denim trousers and a black jacket, he had urged the youth to love and respect each other to make the country strong.Attacking Modi, Chowdhury said,”Those who wove (their) own name on suit, do they have any morale authority to question Rahul Gandhi’s jacket? How do they know rate of the jacket? I will show the jacket can be bought at Rs 700. What will they say then?” she asked.Gandhi had mocked Modi with his “suit-boot ki sarkar” jibe after he wore a suit with his name finely embroidered on the stripes for a meeting with the then US president Barack Obama.

India should join One Belt One Road Initiative with China, says country’s scholar

India should leave its bilateral disputes with China aside and join the Beijing-backed One Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), a Chinese scholar has said.”We will keep the door open on India’s participation in the BRI. China has repeatedly extended invitations to India to be part of the BRI,” said Associate Professor Huang Yunsong, Associate Dean, Sichuan University School of International Studies.”But India is not interested in BRI at this stage,” he told PTI after addressing a BRI symposium in Singapore on Monday. Also readIndia asks neighbours to remain sensitive to its security concern over One Belt One RoadHe pointed out the number of disputes between China and India, but stressed these should not be used against the BRI.Also readUS backs India on ‘One Belt One Road’, says it crosses ‘disputed’ territoryTouted as Chinese President Xi Jinping’s ambitious project, the One Belt One Road initiative focuses on improving connectivity and cooperation among Asian countries, Africa, China and Europe. The BRI also included the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) which India opposed as it goes through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.”There are a lot of issues between India-China since 1947, such as the China Pakistan relationship,” he said. Among others issues, there were growing trade imbalance between the two countries, Dokalam border situation, Tibet and Dalai Lama, he pointed out.”China has an agreement with Pakistan that it will not back any side in their (disputed) claims on Kashmir. It is between Pakistan and India,” stressed Huang who is well versed on China-South Asia issues. But he also noted the positive points, for India and China having agreed to work on border disputes at its own pace while taking a more cooperative approach in pursuing economic activities between the two countries. He called on India to offer more favourable terms for Chinese investments as a way forward to manage the trade deficit.According to figures, India’s trade deficit with China was USD 51.08 billion in 2016-17.Huang also called for removal of tax-based restriction on exports of Indian iron ore and cotton to China.”India should remove restrictions on Iron ore and cotton for export to China. China may allow pharmaceutical imports,” said Huang, who is also the Coordinator, Centre for South Asian Studies at Sichuan University of China.

As P Chidambaram compares selling pakodas to begging, Mumbai vada pav seller donates day’s earnings to Army

PM Modi’s comments about the informal economy in a Zee News interview set off a huge debate around pakodas recently.“If someone opens a ‘pakoda’ shop in front of your office, does that not count at employment’ The person’s daily earning of Rs 200 will never come into any books or accounts. The truth is massive people are being employed,” PM Modi had said on job creation. This led to some rather unfortunate and classists comments about pakoda sellers and vendors in general and even went as far as to compare selling pakodas to begging. Also readIf selling ‘pakodas’ is job, by that logic, even begging is a job: Chidambaram slams PM Modi on job creationTaking a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for saying a ‘pakoda’ seller earning Rs 200 a day should also be considered employed, Chidambaram had earlier tweeted, “Even selling pakodas is a ‘job’, said PM. By that logic, even begging is a job. Let’s count poor or disabled persons who are forced to beg for a living as ’employed’ people”. The comment drew castigation from the BJP, which characterised his jibe as an “insult to the poor”While the comment might have been made off-the-cuff it was ill-timed and uncalled for, given that even those working in the informal sector have basic rights and more than willing to put their foot forward when the nation needs them. Also readLike ‘One Nation, One Tax’, ‘One Nation, One Election’ is jumla: P ChidambaramAmong them is Mangesh Ahilwale, a vada pav seller who has come forward to help in times of needs. In 2015, Ahiwale donated Rs. 20,000 to Chief Minister’s Relief Fund for farmers in drought-hit Marathwada and Vidarbha regions. He repeated the humanitarian gesture last year for a family of Elphinstone Stampede victims. He is doing it again on Wednesday and has promised to donateThis time he pledged to give his one-day earnings to Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for the welfare of soldiers. As part of his charitable decision, Ahiwale sold vada pav at more than 60 per cent cheaper rate on Tuesday, so that everyone could have it.So, instead of selling each of them at Rs 14, he sold it for Rs 5 only.‘This is just a small initiative so that people respect our soldiers. The amount is Rs. 5, because I want that even a poor man is able to buy a vada pav. The whole collection will be sent to Nirmala Sitharaman,’ Ahiwale told ANI here and promised to send it by Wednesday. He said he took this initiative after he realised that people were remembering soldiers only on January 26 and August 15.‘Every Indian respects the soldiers of the nation and I am also one of them. Except on January 26 and August 15, the remembrance for these soldiers is diminishing. This is just a small initiative so that people respect them every day,’ he added.(With inputs from agencies)

India drops eight places, is ranked 42nd on annual Global Democracy Index

India has slipped to 42nd place on an annual Global Democracy Index amid “rise of conservative religious ideologies” and increase in vigilantism and violence against minorities as well as other dissenting voices. While Norway has again topped the list, followed by Iceland and Sweden, compiled by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), India has moved down from 32nd place last year and remains classified among “flawed democracies”.The index ranks 165 independent states and two territories on the basis of five categories: electoral process and pluralism, civil liberties, the functioning of government, political participation and political culture. The list has been divided into four broad categories — full democracy, flawed democracy, hybrid regime and authoritarian regime. Also readSC Judges against CJI: Cong says democracy in danger, Mamata accuses Modi govt of judicial interventionThe US (ranked 21), Japan, Italy, France, Israel, Singapore, and Hong Kong have also been named among ‘flawed democracies’.The EIU is the research and analysis division of the UK-based media behemoth The Economist Group. Created in 1946, the EIU describes itself as having over 70 years of experience “in helping businesses, financial firms and governments to understand how the world is changing and how that creates opportunities to be seized and risks to be managed”.The top three positions on the list are occupied by Nordic countries — Norway, Iceland and Sweden. New Zealand is at fourth and Denmark at fifth place, while others in top-10 include Ireland, Canada, Australia, Finland and Switzerland.Only top-19 countries have been classified as ‘full democracies’, while the hybrid regimes include Pakistan (110th), Bangladesh (92nd), Nepal (94th) and Bhutan (99th).Also readZee JLF 2018 | Dissecting the state of democracyThose named as ‘authoritarian regimes’ include China (139th), Myanmar (120th), Russia (135th) and Vietnam (140th).North Korea is ranked the lowest at 167th, while Syria is a notch better at 166th place.Top-ranked Norway has been given an overall score of 9.87 with perfect-ten scores for Electoral process and pluralism; Political participation; and Political culture.India’s overall score has fallen to 7.23 points, even as it scored well on electoral process and pluralism (9.17). It has not managed to score so well on other four parameters — political culture, functioning of government, political participation and civil liberties.”The rise of conservative religious ideologies also affected India. The strengthening of right-wing Hindu forces in an otherwise secular country led to a rise of vigilantism and violence against minority communities, particularly Muslims, as well as other dissenting voices,” the EIU added. This year’s report which also measured the state of media freedom around the world noted that in India, media is ‘partially free’.Moreover, journalists are at risk from government, military and non-state actors and radical groups, and the threat of violence has a chilling effect on media coverage.”India has also become a more dangerous place for journalists, especially the central state of Chhattisgarh and the northern state of Jammu and Kashmir. The authorities there have restricted freedom of the press, closed down several newspapers and heavily controlled mobile internet services. Several journalists were murdered in India in 2017, as in the previous year,” it noted. In the 2017 Democracy Index, the average global score fell from 5.52 in 2016 to 5.48 (on a scale of 0 to 10). Some 89 countries experienced a decline in their total score compared with 2016. 27 recorded an improvement. The other 51 countries stagnated, as their scores remained unchanged compared with 2016.Almost one-half (49.3 per cent) of the world’s population lives in a democracy of some sort, although only 4.5 per cent reside in a “full democracy”, down from 8.9 per cent in 2015 as a result of the US being demoted from a “full democracy” to a “flawed democracy” in 2016.Around one-third of the world’s population lives under authoritarian rule, with a large share being in China, EIU noted.

Why shouldn’t leaders spend their salaries on things they like? Omar Abdullah defends Rahul Gandhi over jacket

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference working President Omar Abdullah on Wednesday defended Congress President Rahul Gandhi after Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) attacked him for allegedly wearing a jacket worth Rs 70,000.In an apparent retort to Rahul Gandhi’s suit-boot ki sarkar jibe, the BJP has claimed the Congress President wore a jacket worth Rs 70,000 at a concert oragnised by his party in the poll-bound state while being “indifferent” to the woes of people. In a tweet, the BJP alleged the Congress government in Meghalaya was mired in corruption. It said instead of attending a musical event, Gandhi should have given a report card of the state government. Also readIn Meghalaya, Rahul Gandhi attacks BJP; questions how many leadership positions are with women in RSSThe tweet suggesting that the jacket worn by Gandhi was bought with black money, drew a sharp reaction from Congress leader Renuka Chowdhury, who alleged the BJP was leading a “suit-boot ki sarkar” at the Centre, and had no moral authority to question Gandhi. However, Omar Abdullah defended Rahul Gandhi without mentioning his name in a tweet and said, “Kanni shawls or Burberry jackets. If our leaders want to dress well then good for them. Why shouldn’t they spend their salaries on things they like?.”Gandhi is in Meghalaya to campaign for the party for the upcoming Assembly polls. He had attended the concert in Shillong, apparently to reach out to the young voters.Dressed in blue denim trousers and a black jacket, he urged the youth to love and respect each other to make the country strong.

Watch | Can get jacket Rahul wore for PM for Rs 700, but don’t know his measurements except chest size: Renuka Chowdhary

Hitting back at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for taking potshots at Rahul Gandhi over his jacket, the Congress party on Wednesday called it the BJP’s desperation to bring down the Congress party president’s popularity and image.Gandhi, who has been campaigning in Meghalaya for the forthcoming assembly elections, was seen wearing a jacket, apparently from a British luxury fashion brand, which the BJP claims is priced at nearly Rs. 70,000.Speaking to ANI, Congress leader Renuka Chaudhary laughed away the BJP’s claims and said she could produce the same jacket for Rs. 700 for Prime Minister Narendra Modi if he wants, and added that ‘only I don’t have his measurements other than chappan inch chaati (56 inch chest).’Also readIt was borrowed: Rahul Gandhi on his sartorial choice after BJP claims he wore a Rs 70,000-priced jacketChaudhary said, ‘I don’t know whether to laugh or to cry on the desperation of the BJP. Are you saying that they have no other work than to sit and search rates’’ I can show you the same jacket for 700 rupees. If the Prime Minister wants it I can get one and send it to him other than 56-inch chest, I don’t have his measurements.’Also readBJP’s ‘soot-boot’ jibe at Rahul Gandhi, party claims Congress chief wore Rs 70,000 jacket to Meghalaya event The images of Gandhi wearing the jacket gave fresh ammunition to the BJP to counter his famous ‘suit boot ki sarkaar’ jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government.Mocking the BJP, Chaudhary said, ‘It is so funny that it is coming from the suit-boot sarkaar. A suit that was woven with his name on it and he wore it when the US president came (to India). And then they auctioned it for crores. This is the sarkaar that is questioning Rahul Gandhi’s jacket’’Also readIn Meghalaya, Rahul Gandhi attacks BJP; questions how many leadership positions are with women in RSSOn Tuesday, BJP’s Meghalaya unit raised up the issue of Gandhi’s jacket on Twitter.”So @OfficeOfRG , soot(pun intended!)-boot ki sarkar with ‘black’ money fleeced from Meghalayan State exchequer by rampant corruption’ Instead of singing away our woes, you could have given a report card of your inefficient govt in Meghalaya! Your indifference mocks us!” wrote Meghalaya BJP below the picture, which was paired with the jacket’s original photo and price.Rahul fires ‘Suit-Boot Sarkar’ jibe Congress president Rahul Gandhi also fired his “suit-boot ki sarkar” salvo at Prime Minister Narendra Modi afresh, saying he was always found in the company of people attired in suits and not those that are poor.Unruffled after being attacked by the Meghalaya unit of the BJP over the price of the black jacket he wore yesterday at a concert here, Gandhi said, “You will not see him (PM) hug a poor person, talk to a poor person or even engage with a poor person. You will see him with others.”There is a particular distance he maintains with the poor people which he does not with Mr Obama or others,” he told journalists.”The fact of the matter is that he (Modi) is still a suit-boot person. He has not done anything….,” Gandhi said. The Congress president said the prime minister had promised to create 2 crore jobs a year but failed to achieve the target. In an apparent retort to Rahul Gandhi’s suit-boot ki sarkar jibe, the BJP had claimed the Congress President wore a jacket worth USD 995 at a concert oragnised by his party in the poll-bound state yesterday. The party’s state unit also tweeted an image of a jacket similar to the one Gandhi wore having a price tag of USD 995 (little over Rs 63,000).The BJP, which intends to give a tough fight to the ruling Congress in the Meghalaya Assembly elections, also accused the Congress of distracting voters by organising a soiree.”Rock concert distraction tactics by the @OfficeOfRG to take away focus of Meghalayan voters from real issues on ground! A prince can fuss over ‘fuddy-duddy chopper’ rides & cancel his Tura trip, but ever wondered how people in Meghalaya travel,” the BJP tweeted.Gandhi met Church representatives earlier today in the Christian dominated state where elections to the 60-member Assembly would be held on February 27.Two Churches in Meghalaya recently turned down Rs 70 crore assistance announced by the Centre. There are many different visions, missions and ideas in the country and all of them should have a voice, Gandhi said.”There is tremendous anger and discomfort among a lot of people and they believe that this country is made up of a million perspectives, and to force only one perspective is not right,” Gandhi said. With inputs from ANI

No move to send back SC Collegium recommendation for elevation of Indu Malhotra, KM Joseph: Law Ministry sources

Amid reports, sources in the Law Ministry said that there is no move to send back Supreme Court Collegium recommendation for the elevation of Indu Malhotra and KM Joseph as top court judges.Earlier in the day, reports said that the government has rejected a recommendation to elevate senior advocate Indu Malhotra and Uttarakhand High Court Chief Justice K M Joseph as judges of the apex court. However, Law Ministry sources told DNA, “There is ‘no move’ to send back to SC collegium two names recommended for SC on Jan 10. Reports in this regard are incorrect. Names are still being processed.”The name of Justice Joseph, who was part of the bench which in 2016 had quashed the imposition of President’s Rule in the state, was cleared for elevation to the apex court in a collegium meeting held on January 10.Justice Joseph was appointed as Permanent Judge of the Kerala High Court in 2004 and later transferred to Uttarakhand High Court where he assumed charge in 2014 as Chief Justice. The recommendation was sent to the ministry, by the collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra, amid an ongoing tussle in the top court which had come into fore after the unprecedented January 12 press conference by four senior-most judges there.Besides the CJI, the collegium comprises of four senior-most judges of the top court — Justices J Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi, Madan B Lokur and Kurian Joseph — who had held the press conference highlighting various issues, including allocation of important and sensitive PILs, and questioned the manner in which the CJI was allocating them.

Yashwant Sinha, Shatrughan crossed all limits, should quit party: Telangana BJP

A day after veteran BJP leader Yashwant Sinha launched a political platform that was joined by a number of politicians led by BJP MP Shatrughan Sinha, the Telangana unit of the party said that the two leaders have “crossed all the limits” and should quit the BJP.After months of sniping at the BJP, disgruntled leader Yashwant Sinha yesterday launched the political platform named ‘Rashtra Manch’ in New Delhi. The new political platform seeks to take on the Centre and will start a movement against its policies, the former Union finance minister had said.Shatrughan Sinha said he joined the platform as he had not been given a forum in the party for expressing his views, but added that his decision to back the front should not be seen as an anti-party activity as it was in national interest.Telangana BJP spokesperson Krishna Saagar Rao told PTI the party strongly believes there is a certain amount of decorum in the way the national party conducts its affairs and “these two leaders have crossed all the limits”.”Being senior leaders, the party does not want to take any disciplinary action against them, but it’s bearing on them to resign from the party and do what they want to do,” Rao said.”We believe they (Yashwant Sinha and Shatrughan Sinha) are a spent force. The BJP will not have any issue with what they will do after they leave the BJP,” he said.According to Rao, Shatrughan Sinha, elected to the Lok Sabha on a BJP ticket, should have resigned by now.”They neither have any role in the party, nor anybody in the country follows them,” he said and alleged that the two leaders wanted to defeat the BJP in most of the elections — from Bihar to Gujarat Assembly polls.”It’s a betrayal,” he said.”They should actually apologise to the BJP and then resign from the party. I don’t think they have any equity in this democracy. Their attempts to embarrass us (BJP) are not yielding any results in the last three years,” Rao said.Being in the party and trying to sabotage its prospects is “unethical”, he said adding, “The BJP will not stoop to their level of conduct to expel them or initiate action.”

SC Collegium recommendation for elevation of Indu Malhotra, KM Joseph rejected by Centre: Report

The Central government has reportedly rejected the Supreme Court collegium recommendation to elevate senior advocate Indu Malhotra and Uttarakhand High Court Chief Justice K M Joseph as judges of the apex court. The Union Law Ministry has sent back the recommendations to the Chief Justice of India without forwarding them to President Ram Nath Kovind for issuing warrants of appointment, reported The New Indian Express.A report said that the reason is unclear as of now. The recommendation was sent to the ministry on January 22, by the collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra, amid an ongoing tussle in the top court which had come into fore after the unprecedented January 12 press conference by four senior-most judges there.Besides the CJI, the collegium comprises of four senior-most judges of the top court — Justices J Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi, Madan B Lokur and Kurian Joseph — who had held the press conference highlighting various issues, including allocation of important and sensitive PILs, and questioned the manner in which the CJI was allocating them. The name of Justice Joseph, who was part of the bench which in 2016 had quashed the imposition of President’s Rule in the state, was cleared for elevation to the apex court in a collegium meeting held on January 10.Justice Joseph was appointed as Permanent Judge of the Kerala High Court in 2004 and later transferred to Uttarakhand High Court where he assumed charge in 2014 as Chief Justice.

In Meghalaya, Rahul Gandhi attacks BJP; questions how many leadership positions are with women in RSS

The Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday attacked Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in poll-bound Meghalaya saying, they are attempting to undermine the culture and way of life of the people. The Congress president is in Shillong to kick off the election campaign of the party.”We are fighting RSS ideology across the nation,” Rahul said. The Congress leader said that what BJP and RSS are doing in all over India and particularly in North-east is attempting to undermine your culture, language, and way of life. “Be proud of your heritage, your language, your culture and your religion. We stand together to defend your culture and your way of thinking,” he said.Attacking RSS, Rahul Gandhi questioned how many leadership positions are with women in RSS.Stating that the RSS idea is aimed at dis-empowering women, he said, “Does anyone know how many leadership positions are with women in RSS? Zero. If you see pix of Mahatma Gandhi you’ll find women on this side (right), this side (left) but if you see pix of Mohan Bhagwat, he’ll be alone or surrounded by men.”One of the most important things to be done in the Congress is to balance the number of men we put to fight the election and the number of women. I would like to invite women to join the party in Meghalaya so that we have more and more women to choose from,” he added. On Tuesday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) attacked Rahul Gandhi after he was seen wearing a black jacket, costing nearly Rs 70,000.However, hitting back at the BJP, the Congress party called it the BJP’s desperation to bring down the Congress party president’s popularity and image.Gandhi, who has been campaigning in Meghalaya for the forthcoming assembly elections, was seen wearing a jacket, apparently from a British luxury fashion brand, which the BJP claims is priced at nearly Rs. 70,000.Speaking to ANI, Congress leader Renuka Chaudhary laughed away the BJP’s claims and said she could produce the same jacket for Rs. 700 for Prime Minister Narendra Modi if he wants, and added that only I don’t have his measurements other than chappan inch chaati (56 inch chest). The polling for the 60-member state assembly will take place on February 27 along with Nagaland. The results will be declared on March 3.

Speaking about his sartorial choice, Rahul Gandhi said that the jacket which was causing so much furore was ‘borrowed’. He was quoted saying by India Today that the alleged Burberry jacket was ‘borrowed’.Hitting back at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for taking potshots at Rahul Gandhi over his jacket, the Congress party on Wednesday called it the BJP’s desperation to bring down the Congress party president’s popularity and image.Gandhi, who has been campaigning in Meghalaya for the forthcoming assembly elections, was seen wearing a jacket, apparently from a British luxury fashion brand, which the BJP claims is priced at nearly Rs. 70,000.Also readBJP’s ‘soot-boot’ jibe at Rahul Gandhi, party claims Congress chief wore Rs 70,000 jacket to Meghalaya event Speaking to ANI, Congress leader Renuka Chaudhary laughed away the BJP’s claims and said she could produce the same jacket for Rs. 700 for Prime Minister Narendra Modi if he wants and added that ‘only I don’t have his measurements other than chappan inch chaati (56 inch chest).’Chaudhary said, ‘I don’t know whether to laugh or to cry on the desperation of the BJP. Know why Rahul Gandhi’s Guwahati flight photos have gone viral

Our fascination with VIPs is so deep-rooted in our senses that we cannot even imagine a top politician helping out fellow citizens. This was evident when pictures of Congress President Rahul Gandhi helping out fellow passengers with luggage on Delhi-Guwahati flight went viral on Tuesday. Rahul, who is on a two-day visit to poll-bound Meghalaya, was on the flight to Guwahati en route Shillong when he was spotted helping the common passengers. While some of the passengers clicked the pictures of Mr. Gandhi lifting luggage, others vied for a selfie with the Amethi MP. They later posted the pictures on social media, praising the opposition leader for his gesture. It is only our fascination for the deep-rotted VIP culture that we find an act such as this something extraordinary. It is something we all have done while travelling, whether on a flight, a train or a bus. Also readBJP’s ‘soot-boot’ jibe at Rahul Gandhi, party claims Congress chief wore Rs 70,000 jacket to Meghalaya event Rahul did nothing out of ordinary but acted as any common man would. But it is our belief that a person with such strong political and family background do not act the way he did. We are used to powerful politicians flaunting their power, and not their humility and that says a lot about the VIP culture. Meanwhile, Mr. Gandhi reached Meghalaya yesterday to officially launch the Assembly campaign. He also addressed the Meghalaya PCC Executive. In the evening, he attended a party-organised concert to reach out to young voters. Dressed in blue denim trousers and a black jacket, Gandhi also spoke for five minutes at the ‘Festival of Peace’ concert as he listened to the musical bands enthralling the 4,000-plus crowd. His jacket also created a stir after the BJP claimed that the outfit cost US$995 (Rs 63,000). Also readSad to hear BJP offered money to churches, no money can buy people of Meghalaya: Rahul Gandhi”So @OfficeOfRG , soot(pun intended!)-boot ki sarkar with ‘black’ money fleeced from Meghalayan State exchequer by rampant corruption? The Congress has been in power in the northeastern state for nearly 15 years.

Dos and Don’t during earthquake: Your complete guide

Indian subcontinent has a history of earthquakes because the intensity and high frequency of earthquakes is the Indian plate driving into Asia at a rate of approximately 47 mm/year. Here is all you need to know during earthquakes to keep yourself safe. Stay as safe as possible during an earthquake. Be aware that some earthquakes are actually foreshocks and a larger earthquake might occur. Minimise your movements to a few steps that reach a nearby safe place and stay indoors until the shaking has stopped and you are sure exiting is safe.If indoors* DROP to the ground; take COVER by getting under a sturdy table or other piece of furniture; and HOLD ON until the shaking stops. If there is no a table or desk near you, cover your face and head with your arms and crouch in an inside corner of the building. Also readMassive 6.2 earthquake jolts Afghanistan, tremors felt in Delhi-NCR; 1 dead in Pak’s Balochistan region * Protect yourself by staying under the lintel of an inner door, in the corner of a room, under a table or even under a bed.* Stay away from glass, windows, outside doors and walls, and anything that could fall, (such as lighting fixtures or furniture).* Stay in bed if you are there when the earthquake strikes. Hold on and protect your head with a pillow, unless you are under a heavy light fixture that could fall. In that case, move to the nearest safe place.* Use a doorway for shelter only if it is in close proximity to you and if you know it is a strongly supported, load bearing doorway.* Stay inside until the shaking stops and it is safe to go outside. Research has shown that most injuries occur when people inside buildings attempt to move to a different location inside the building or try to leave.* Be aware that the electricity may go out or the sprinkler systems or fire alarms may turn on.If outdoors* Do not move from where you are. However, move away from buildings, trees, streetlights, and utility wires.* If you are in open space, stay there until the shaking stops. The greatest danger exists directly outside buildings; at exits; and alongside exterior walls. Most earthquake-related casualties result from collapsing walls, flying glass, and falling objects. If in a moving vehicle* Stop as quickly as safety permits and stay in the vehicle. Avoid stopping near or under buildings, trees, overpasses, and utility wires.* Proceed cautiously once the earthquake has stopped. Avoid roads, bridges, or ramps that might have been damaged by the earthquake. If trapped under debris* Do not light a match.* Do not move about or kick up dust.* Cover your mouth with a handkerchief or clothing.* Tap on a pipe or wall so rescuers can locate you. Use a whistle if one is available. Shout only as a last resort. Shouting can cause you to inhale dangerous amounts of dust.
