Attention motorists! NHAI hikes toll across India, read for details

Starting today motorists plying on the National Highways will have to shell out towards toll. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has revised the toll rates by 5% to 7% in sync with Wholesale Price Index (WPI).The percentage in increase of toll rates would vary on different highways, on some corridors it will be 5%, while or others it will be 6 and 7%. Even the monthly and daily trip passes will face a similar rate revision.Due to the revision in toll prices, there is likelihood of a cascading effect on goods due to increasing toll rates as well as regular revision in fuel prices, insurance premiums and e-way bill implementation. At present, the NHAI has 372 toll plazas being operated directly or indirectly by the authority. The transporters have been pressing the government to levy an annual or one time toll charge in order to cut down on waiting time at the toll plazas. However, the government hasn’t accepted the suggestion, instead Fastag has been introduced. Now, the government on a pilot basis is also in the process of introducing Pay-As-You-Use toll on Delhi-Mumbai National Highway.

Bhagalpur communal clashes: Bihar court rejects anticipatory bail plea of Union minister’s son

A Bhagalpur court on Saturday rejected the anticipatory bail plea of Union minister and BJP leader Ashwini Kumar Choubey’s son Arijit Shashwat, facing arrest in a case relating to communal clashes in the district.Additional District and Sessions Judge Kumud Ranjan turned down the bail plea filed by the 38-year-old Shashwat. The court pronounced a one-line order that Shashwat’s plea is rejected, his lawyer Viresh Kumar Mishra told PTI.Shashwat had moved the court after an arrest warrant was issued against him a week earlier. “We are conducting raids in Bhagalpur and other parts of Bihar to trace Shashwat,” Bhagalpur SSP Manoj Kumar said.He said Shashwat’s mobile phone has been switched off. Kumar said “if required, we may initiate action against Shashwat under sections 82 and 83 of Criminal Procedure Code, relating to declaring a person as an absconder and attachment of his property”.The arrest warrant was issued against Shashwat and eight others after they were named in an FIR filed at Nathnagar police station of Bhagalpur in connection with the clashes that broke out between members of two communities on March 17.Shashwat had unsuccessfully contested 2015 Assembly polls from Bhagalpur town on a BJP ticket. He lost to Congress’s Ajit Sharma.Heavy stone-pelting and even exchange of fire were witnessed during the violence in which several persons, including two policemen, were injured. The clashes had followed a skirmish between residents of Nathnagar and those participating in a procession, taken out on ‘New Year’ as per the Hindu calendar. The procession was led by the Union minister’s son.The locals had objected to playing of loud music during the procession. The violence was also the first in a series of minor communal riots witnessed in several districts of the state.Communal passions have have peaked in Aurangabad, Nalanda, Samastipur, Sheikhpura and Nawada districts following the Ram Navami festivities. The opposition has criticised the Nitish Kumar government as the administration has failed to arrest Shashwat.Notes of discord have also emerged within the ruling JD(U)-BJP combine over the issue. The BJP has blamed the recent spurt in communal flare-ups on the RJD, though JD(U) leaders like K C Tyagi and Shyam Rajak have issued statements asking Shashwat to surrender. The chief minister has cautioned people against getting swayed by communal passions, especially whipped up by rumours on social media. On Monday, Shashwat had said he would not surrender as he was “not a fugitive”.The young BJP leader has charged the local police with acting as per the directions of a local MLA, apparently from the Congress and lodging a “fabricated” case.

After coming back, he will first go to Amritsar followed by Patna, Kolkata to hand over bodies to their relatives,” a source said.Families of some of these victims had met External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj here on March 26.Earlier, Swaraj had told Parliament last month that all the 39 Indians, abducted by the ISIS in Iraq in 2014, had been killed and their bodies recovered. As many as 40 Indians were abducted by the ISIS terror group from Mosul in Iraq but one of them escaped posing as a Muslim from Bangladesh, Swaraj had said in Rajya Sabha. Also readIndians dead in Iraq: Sushma Swaraj retweets result of Congress poll about her ‘biggest failure’ The remaining 39 Indians were taken to Badoosh and killed, she had said.Search operations led to a mound in Badoosh where locals said some bodies were buried by the ISIS. Deep penetration radars were used to establish that the mound indeed was a mass grave, she had said, adding the Indian authorities requested their Iraqi counterpart to exhume the bodies. Also readBodies of 39 Indians killed in Iraq to be brought to India in a week’s time: Sushma Swaraj assures familiesSwaraj said the mass grave had exactly 39 bodies, with distinctive features such as long hair, non-Iraqi shoes and IDs. Initiate dialogue with Pak: Mehbooba Mufti urges PM Narendra Modi

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to initiate a dialogue process with Pakistan at the earliest as the “key for peace” was with the neighbouring country.Speaking at a function organised by a group of Kashmiri Pandits owing allegiance to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mufti said that war was never an option.”Reconciliation is the mantra which we need to follow and therefore, I request Modi ji to engage with Pakistan,” she said.”We need to take an assurance from the neighbouring country that they should not be allowing their soil to be used against India. After all, we all know that the key for peace is in Pakistan. They have been pushing terrorists into the state,” she said. The chief minister said that efforts should be made for changing the slogan of “Azadi” in the Kashmir Valley.”This can be achieved. Why can’t Jammu and Kashmir be a gateway to the central Asian countries.”If the CPEC (China-Pakistan Economic Corridor) is a possibility, so can be this. If new roads are opened, the slogan of Azadi will automatically change,” she said at a gathering of around 200 Kashmiri Pandits, who had to leave their homes after the onset of the militancy in 1990.She advised people not to watch debates on television channels which only foment hatred between the two warring nations as well as the Muslims of Kashmir and the rest of the country.”Those, sitting in studios and pontificating the nation, are only interested in the TRP ratings and not finding solution to the problem.”Many times I wonder who are these people who talk so much on television. Are they even aware of the ground realities,” she said.Mufti said that every second day daggers are out and a war hysteria is created.”If a war had to happen, it would have in 2001 when the armies of the two nation were in an eye-ball-to-eye ball contact for over a year,” she said.”War (between India and Pakistan) will not happen. After the attack on Parliament in 2001, the armies of both the countries (India and Pakistan) were deployed along borders for a year, if the war did not take place back then, it will not take place now as both the nations know it will be disastrous (for both),” she said. She also appealed for a reconciliation between the Kashmiri Muslims and Pandit community.”I know you people had to leave your homes under difficult situations. You people have suffered but so do have those who are their in Kashmir.”The gift of education has helped you (Pandits) in making a name for yourself but those in Kashmir are still trying to live a peaceful life,” the chief minister said and made an appeal to Kashmiri Pandits to visit the Valley.”The Valley is incomplete without you. To begin with, please come as tourists and later if you feel so, you are most welcome to go back to your homes and stay there. I am not assuring you a roller coaster ride.”Difficulties will be there but we together have to face these difficulties. Please do not wait for the last gun to fall silent,” she said. The chief minister also apologised to the Kashmiri Pandits for delay in resolving their issues. The Kashmiri Pandits should send their younger generations to see the state to familiarise them with their roots, the way children from Jammu and Kashmir are sent to see the rest of India, Mufti said. She also urged the Centre to talk with Pakistan so that the Kashmiri Pandits can visit Sharda Peeth in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK).When asked about the third front, she said every party has a right to be in alliance with any party it wants.Over funds to Jammu and Kashmir, she said it is given by the Centre and the earliest they do so, the state government tries to utilise them.A charter of demands, including health insurance, was submitted by the group of Kashmiri Pandits to the chief minister who assured that she will consider and act upon them.Sharda Peeth, once regarded as a major centre of learning, is an abandoned Hindu temple located in Sharda village along the Neelam river near the Line of Control.

Modi ji doesn’t let us sleep till a project is completed, says Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis

Once a project is sanctioned, Prime Minister Narendra Modi does not let the concerned ministers and officers sleep till it is completed, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said today.Fadanvis was addressing a gathering after laying the foundation stone of a rail coach manufacturing factory in Latur. Union Railways and Coal Minister Piyush Goyal was also present on the occasion.”If a project does not get completed on time, Modi ji does not let the concerned minister and the officers sleep until the work is done. I want Piyush ji to bring PM Modi along to inaugurate this project in a year and a half,” Fadnavis said.”We are laying extensive metro lines in Maharashtra but we had to import coaches from outside, despite we being ready to pay the Railways for them. This is the first project in the history of Railways where bhoomipujan is being done within two months of it being approved,” he said. The Chief Minister expressed hope that the coach factory would be a magnet for allied industries and create thousands of jobs.Built on 153 hectares of land, the plant would manufacture Electrical Multiple Units (railway term for suburban trains) and metro rail coaches. The Maharashtra government has offered relaxation in land, taxes and other requirements. The Maharashtra CM said Vidarbha and Marathwada regions were his government’s priority, adding that both shared the same pain and thirst for development.”Both regions want farmers to prosper and employment for youth, but have been struggling from many years on these fronts. Hence, our priority is to develop these regions first,” he said.Fadnavis said industries were not willing to set up a base in Marathwada as the region did not enjoy port connectivity.”Our Mumbai-Nagpur super expressway project aims to bridge this gap. All seven districts of Marathwada have been connected to the expressway. Thus, Mumbai is merely 7-8 hours away,” he said.

Congress will bring loan waiver scheme for small, marginal farmers: Surjewala

The Congress, if voted to power, would bring a loan waiver scheme for all small and marginal farmers in the country on the pattern of the farm loan waiver programme of the UPA government in 2009, senior leader Randeep Singh Surjewala said on Saturday. He said the Congress party has already decided in its Delhi AICC session that the party would provide interest-free loans to cover input costs to tenant farmers, share croppers and farmers owning and cultivating up to two hectares of land.Addressing a Jan Lalkar’ rally here, Surjewala said, “The Narendra Modi government has waived a huge amount of loans taken by a few select industrialists, but it is not bothered about the crores of distressed farmers who are not getting the promised rates for their farm produces.” Surjewala said that the Congress party is committed to bring back smile on the faces of farmers, youth, backward and deprived sections of the society.”The people are greatly disappointed with the BJP as the state and central BJP governments have no concern with people’s problems and their slogan ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’ has become ‘Pradesh Ka Vinash and Apna Vikas in reality for the BJP leaders,” he alleged.Surjewala criticised the BJP leadership for its alleged failure to honour its pre-poll promises to youth, farmers and other sections of the society.Referring to the mounting debt on the state, Surjewala said that the BJP government has brought prosperous Haryana on the brink of bankruptcy.”Haryana’s debt has increased to 1,41,792 crore in 2017-18 from around 60,000 crore in 2013-14. The steep increase of over Rs 81,000 crore in just three-and-a-half years is quite alarming and reflects the sad state of affairs in the state,” he added.

To avenge Rohith Vemula, Hyderabad University student plans VC’s assassination

A post-graduate student of Hyderabad Central University (HCU) has been arrested by Andhra Pradesh Police for allegedly planning to assassinate Vice-Chancellor P Appa Rao to avenge the death of Rohith Vemula who committed suicide on campus in January 2016. The police arrested the student and one of his friend on Friday evening, foiling the assassination plot.East Godavari district Superintendent of Police (SP) Vishal Gunni said Chandan Kumar Mishra of Kolkata, an MA student in HCU, and his friend Ankala Pridhvi Raj were apprehended by the police. They were caught by the police on the basis of suspicion during a routine vehicle checking on the Bhadrachalam-Charla road, bordering Telangana.During questioning, the two revealed that they plotted to kill the HCU VC to avenge the death of Vemula, a PhD scholar of the university who had committed suicide in his hostel room in 2016, the SP said. The two were put on the operation by outlawed CPI (Maoist) Central Committee member Pulluri Prasada Rao alias Chandranna and Telangana State Committee Secretary Hari Bhushan alias Yapa Narayana, the officer added. The police said that the two wanted to join Naxal group CPI (Maoist) group and had met Hari Narayana in the Cherla forest area in December 2017.The Naxal leader had promised Mishra that he would be a made an important cadre of the CPI (Maoist) if the VC was killed, the SP said.“They discussed various issues relating to the university and the Rohith Vemula suicide issue and the developments following it. During the talk, they planned to kill the Vice-Chancellor so as to attract the students to the Maoist party,” Gunni was quoted as saying by Deccan Chronicle. “They believed that if the vice chancellor is killed students might get inclined to the Maoist movement and join the group in large numbers,” he said. The duo had planned to drop in some pamphlets bearing the signature of Maoist to spread the message of their involvement, the SP said.Another accused Raj belongs to Krishna district in Andhra Pradesh and is currently a fourth-year student of law in Vijayawada. The two met in 2016 and became friends, the SP added.Mishra had joined the HCU in 2013 for his MA.”The two got attracted to Maoist ideology and started luring other students as well by conducting classes,” the SP said.Vemula’s suicide in January 2016 had triggered a nationwide protest.Appa Rao has been provided with one plus one security following threats to his life, V C Sajjanar, Commissioner Cyberabad, said. “We will review the security and beef it up depending upon the threat perception,” he said.(With PTI inputs)

Cauvery issue: Flash protest at Chennai’s Marina beach, demonstrators raise anti-BJP slogans

A flash protest by a group of individuals on Saturday at Chennai’s Marina beach on Cauvery issue rekindled the memory of last year’s pro-Jallikattu demonstrations.Unlike the pro-Jallikattu protests that lasted for several days, Saturday’s protestors numbering about 50 were detained by the police immediately to prevent it from snowballing into major protest. The protestors raised slogans condemning the centre and BJP government while seeking setting up of the Cauvery Management Board in compliance with the Supreme Court’s February 16 order.TV channels beamed images of men and women carrying banners and raising slogans against the Union government for not constituting the Board. Some social media platforms also streamed the protest ‘live’.The protesters wanted the Centre to immediately set up the Board, saying farmers were already hit and their prospects could be affected further. On Saturday morning, messages calling for a protest at Marina beach demanding the same were doing rounds on social networking sites following which heavy police were deployed at the beach on Saturday.Around 200 police personnel were deployed at various places across the Marina stretch keeping a close watch for protestors. However, a bunch of visitors to the beach began protesting holding placards and raising slogans. The police who were at the spot immediately started clearing the protestors.A senior police officer warned the protesters for staging the demonstration without permission.”There are designated places in the city and police have notified those places. Protests should be held thereafter obtaining permission. If the general public is affected by protests, police will take action,” the officer said. He said the number of protesters picked up today was yet to be ascertained.Ever since the massive pro-Jallikattu protests that rocked the Marina for more than a week last year, the popular beach has been kept out of bounds by police for any kind of agitation. The police department has also been issuing frequent prohibitory orders, banning any kind of congregation.

Separation not practical, Tibetans seeking autonomy under Chinese Constitution: Dalai Lama

On a day that marked the beginning of the 60th year of him first setting foot on Indian soil, spiritual leader Dalai Lama said that the Tibetans were not seeking separation from the People’s Republic of China but were only seeking “certain rights” mentioned in the Chinese constitution, including Tibetan autonomy “to preserve their own culture.”Dalai Lama spoke to World Is One News (WION) on the sidelines of the “Thank You India” programme organised in McLeodganj’s Tsuglagkhang temple in Dharamshala.“I don’t know,” is what the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet said when asked as to by when he thought that the exiled Tibetans would be able to return to their homeland. “I think the Tibetan issue is of justice. Also, now at a practical level we are not seeking separation (from China). Our elected political leadership is also committed to that we are not seeking separation,” the Dalai Lama added. The spiritual leader, an ambassador of peace the world over and revered by millions, said that Tibetans should have the rights they require to preserve their identity and culture. “While remaining within the People’s Republic of China, we should have certain rights mentioned in the Chinese Constitution, including Tibetan autonomy. Chinese constitution itself recognises these rights. So these entire Tibetan areas should have same rights to preserve their own culture including language and rich Buddhist tradition,” he told WION.When asked as to what he thought about India’s equation with China and where did the Tibetans figure in that equation, the Dalai Lama said, “Logically, India and China are most populated nations. Any sensible person would want Hindi-Chini Bhai Bhai at practical level to live together. Both India and China cannot destroy each other. So you have to live side by side, the two nations need to think reasonably.” He added that there “are some sort of problems…border problems” and those can only be solved “through talks and not by weapons”. “Through weapons you can kill a few hundred people…that won’t solve the problem,” the Tibetan leader said.Central Tibetan Administration’s President Dr Lobsang Sangay told WION that the Tibetan struggle was one of the best example of “Make In India” and that the success of the Tibetan struggle will be India’s success story.Tibetans are celebrating the year 2018 as “Thank You India” year to express their gratitude towards India for not just giving shelter to exiled Tibetans on its soil but for also having stood by the Tibetan “cause.”These celebrations got mired in controversy after the Indian government issued an advisory to its senior bureaucrats asking them to maintain a distance from these programmes. The “Thank You India” event that was today held in Dharamshala was originally slated to take place in New Delhi and had to be moved out at the insistence of the Indian government. The Indian government, meanwhile, tried to salvage the situation by dispatching Culture Minister Mahesh Sharma and senior BJP leader Ram Madhav to attend today’s event.

Anti-Sterlite protests gain momentum: After Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth comes in support of Thoothukudi

Local protests against the expansion of a copper smelter plant in Tamil Nadu’s Thoothukudi district have gained momentum with support extended by the actor-turned-politicians Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan. A day before Haasan’s visit to the area, superstar Rajinikanth took to Twitter to extend his support for the protest which entered 47th day on Saturday.Residents of A Kumarareddiyapuram, a village adjacent to the Sterlite Copper Smelting plant, have been protesting seeking an immediate shutdown of the plant and also to scrap the expansion plan citing severe pollution of air, water and soil. The protest got much need attention when the Thoothukudi town remained shut for a day on March 24 and ended with a public rally which attracted thousands of people. In a tweet, the superstar said that people had been protesting against the Sterlite Copper smelter plant for the past 47 days citing health concerns. “One can’t understand why the government, which gave the nod for the plant, is not taking any action and is just watching,” he said in a Tamil tweet. The actor’s support comes after Haasan announcement that he would join the protesters on Sunday against the expansion of the plant. “On Sunday I’m joining those protesters in Tuticorin. Sterlite copper plant should not become another Bhopal… Sterlite plant has to be closed, at least not to be expanded,” Haasan had said while addressing a press conference on Friday. The villager’s protest has got the support of almost all the political parties including DMK demanding the government to stop work on the Sterlite expansion. CPI (M) has announced that it would lay siege to the copper smelter plant on April 4 against its proposed expansion.A leading copper producer, Sterlite Copper represents the copper unit of Vedanta Limited, which operates a 400,000 tonnes per annum plant here. The unit has been since closed for a fortnight from March 29 for taking up maintenance work.Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Environment Minister KC Karuppanan has said that the state government was going into the complaints received from the people residing around the proposed site for setting up of the new units of the Sterlite Copper plants in Thoothukudi district.“The state government will take steps as per the law,” the minister said in a statement. He also said that the state pollution control board would consider the Sterlite plants application for the renewal of the consent to operate license which expires on Saturday only after reviewing the pollution control equipment installed in the plant, public complaints and air pollution data.

Cauvery Management Board row: EPS, OPS to skip AIADMK’s hunger strike?

Amid the accusation of the opposition parties that the AIADMK government in Tamil Nadu lacks the courage to take on the BJP government at the centre, the ruling party has released list of senior leaders who will lead the April 3 hunger strike urging the Centre to set up Cauvery Management Board in all the 32 districts but the names of chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and his deputy O Panneerselvam were conspicuously absent. While all the ministers barring – EPS and OPS, senior party leaders, heads of various wings, MPs and MLAs were all named in the list by the party. With the Cauvery issue appearing to be snowballing into an embarrassment for the ruling AIADMK which has largely been friendly with the Centre, the party on Friday made an announcement on observing the hunger strike next week. The announcement came after the centre failed to set up CMB adhering to the Supreme Court’s February 16 order setting six weeks’ time to act.The rival TTV Dhinakaran camp taunted the ruling dispensation and challenged them to criticise Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the hunger strike. Dhinakaran aide V Pugazhenthi told reporters here that the chief minister and his deputy should speak out against the Centre. “The fast should not be a mere eyewash,” he said, while recalling a hunger strike conducted by Dhinakaran in Thanjavur last week on the same issue.DMK working president MK Stalin alleged that the AIADMK government was so subservient to the BJP government at the centre it filed its contempt petition at 11.15 am after the latter filed its clarification petition at 11 am. “I had suggested the government to file the contempt petition during the assembly session itself. But they waited so long. It is a drama being enacted by both the centre and the state,” he said.Immediately after Dhinakaran camp’s challenge, chief minister Palaniswami, issued a statement, saying that the state’s counsel would oppose the centre’s clarification petition in the Supreme Court on the Cauvery issue at the admission stage itself. The centre has sought three months time to implement the SC’s order and also wanted to know whether the board framed under 6(A) of the act can have functions different from the ones recommended for the CMB by the tribunal.“The centre could have filed the clarification petition immediately after the Apex court order on February 16. The centre’s petition is contradictory to the orders of the Cauvery River Dispute Tribunal and the Supreme Court that order the formation of the CMB and CWRC,” he said, noting that he had instructed the state’s counsel to oppose the centre’s petition in the admission stage itself.

The notification would be issued on April 2 and model code of conduct is effective after the end of this press conference,” Singh said.Filing for nomination would be done from April 2 to 9.About 5.08 crore people will be exercising their franchise in the Panchayat election. However, the opposition is fuming over the early announcement. State BJP president Dilip Ghosh said that the dates had been fixed to deter opposition leaders to campaign for election. “In 1999, the TMC had moved court as Panchayat elections had been scheduled during the board exams and she has done it herself this time. We are looking at possibilities to move court,” he said.CPI(M) MLA Sujan Chakraborty said that it was an insult to Opposition leaders. “Two days ago there was an all-party meeting where nothing about the date was mentioned and now suddenly the dates are announced. It is an insult,” he said.Interestingly, Singh avoided the question whether Central forces would be used to conduct the election.Immediately after the announcement, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee conducted a meeting with state panchayat minister Subrata Mukherjee and other officials to take stock of the position of ongoing projects. After the meeting it was announced through a state notification that May 1 being Labour Day, state government employees who would be busy with election duty would get a compensatory off on the next day.

Air India pilot who flew hijacked flight to Pak dies: Know about India’s first episode of terror in sky

Capt MK Kachru, pilot of the Indian Airlines plane that was hijacked to Pakistan in January 1971, died in Faridabad on Saturday after prolonged illness, his family said.He was 93, they said. The 1971 episode was the first time an Indian plane was hijacked and forced to land on foreign soil. An IANS report details how the two Kashmiri teens used toy gun and wooden grenade to hijack the plane.Hashim Qureshi, who was then 16, told IANS in 2012 how he met a BSF officer at Srinagar’s Lal Chowk and asked his help to enter Pakistan in return of some information.‘I was asked by the BSF to keep a watch at the Srinagar airport. An advertisement appeared in a newspaper about the sale of a look-real pistol which could be used to scare away thieves. I ordered one by post. I fabricated a wooden hand grenade and painted it with metallic colour,’ Qureshi was quoted as saying. He claimed that Maqbool Bhat, the JKLF founder, was the inspiration behind the hijacking. On the ill-fated day, Capt Kachru was flying the Indian Airlines plane named Ganga, carrying 26 passengers and a crew of four, from Srinagar to Jammu when two Kashmiris, including Qureshi hijacked it and forced him to fly to Lahore.Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, then foreign minister of Pakistan, turned up at the airport and hailed the hijackers, who had demanded the release of some prisoners from Indian jails. The demand was refused by India.Though the passengers and the crew were transported back to India by land route via Amritsar, the plane was set on fire.Qureshi claimed that Lahore Police wanted to set ablaze the plane for maximum media attention. It is said that an army officer came with fuel cannister and told hijackers to set the plane on fire.India had hit back by banning overflights of Pakistani aircraft in Indian airspace.

Air India sale another scam in making, will file private criminal law complaint: Subramanian Swamy

In an open revolt against his own government, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Subramanian Swamy today said that he will file a “private criminal law complaint” against the proposed sale of Air India. Earlier this week, the Narendra Modi government unveiled plans to sell up to 76% stake in debt-laden Air India and transfer its management control to private players as a strategic disinvestment process.Hitting out at the government’s plan, Swamy said, “The proposed sale of Air India is potentially another scam in the making. Selling family silver is not divestment. I am watching who is doing what and will, if I see culpability, file a private criminal law complaint.” Last year, as the plans to disinvest Air India gathered steam, the Rajya Sabha MP had wwondered why the airline need to be sold as its flights are occupied. Also readUPA made Air India a ‘beggar’, Modi govt will transform it into ‘majestic Maharaja’: Jayant SinhaAir India, which has more than Rs 52,000 crore debt burden, is surviving on a Rs 30,000 crore bailout package extended by the previous UPA government in 2012. On Wednesday, the Civil Aviation Ministry came out with the preliminary information memorandum for seeking Expression of Interest (EoI) for the strategic disinvestment of Air India. The government has proposed selling 76% stake in the airline as well as transfer management control to private players. Besides, Air India would divest 100% stake in Air India Express and 50% shareholding in AISATS, an equal joint venture with Singapore-based SATS.The senior official said Employee Stock Option Plan (ESOP) would be extended to the airline staff once the divestment process is complete.Stock options would be provided from the government’s remaining 24% stake after divestment. As per the memorandum, the selected bidder should abide by conditions set out in the Request for Proposal (RFP) or the definitive documents to safeguard employees’ interests. The government has plans to divest its residual 24% stake through the process of “dispersed disinvestment” on such terms that may be prescribed in the Request for Proposal (RFP).Air India had 11,214 permanent employees as on December 1, 2017. These include 2,056 people on deputation to other companies and agencies. The airline also had 2,913 employees on contract and 2,661 people on deputation from other companies, among others, as per the memorandum. Also readNarendra Modi govt to sell 76% stake in Air India; cede management controlAmong the permanent staff, as many as 4,217 are set to retire in the next five years, it added.According to the memorandum, the employees’ dues to the tune of Rs 1,298.2 crore on account of Justice Dharamadhikari Commission Report is in the nature of past arrears.”Air India/ Air India Asset Holding Ltd will commit to pay the same at the appropriate stage before consummation of the proposed transaction,” it noted.(With PTI inputs)

RJD, Congress trying to flare up riots in Bihar, Modi govt will take stern action: Union minister

He also claimed that the Centre and the Bihar government had foiled attempts to cause "riots" in Bihar, although the RJD and Congress "wanted" the disturbances.
Bihar has witnessed a spurt in communal clashes of late. On March 17, violence had broken out in Bhagalpur, where a religious procession was being led by Choubey's son, Arijit Shashwat.
"We will defeat the intention of the RJD and Congress to instigate riots. The conspirators wanted to cause riots, but no one dared to do so and we have kept Bihar under control. The Bihar government and the Centre will together defeat the attempts to disturb harmony in the state," the minister said.
Yesterday, in another incident of communal flare-up in Bihar, scores of vehicles were vandalised and a hotel was set ablaze at Nawada, where the members of two communities clashed following reports of desecration of an idol.
Choubey also accused the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government of "failing" to deal with the situation in that state.
"The West Bengal government has completely failed to maintain harmony and tolerance among the people," he alleged.
Asansol and Raniganj in West Burdwan district of West Bengal had witnessed violent clashes between two groups over Ram Navami celebrations on Sunday and Monday.
Official sources had said one person was killed and two police officers were injured in the clashes. ”

Hanuman Jayanti: TMC takes out massive rallies; low-key affair for BJP, VHP

State VHP president Sachindranath Singha had yesterday said major Hanuman Jayanti rallies might lead to more problems in the state. "Only last week, we had huge Ram Navami celebrations, which at some places also led to violence. Now, taking out rallies on Hanuman Jayanti will send a wrong message," he had said. The police have put in place elaborate arrangements across the state to avoid any untoward incident during the Hanuman Jayanti celebrations. "We will keep a tab on any suspicious movement. No one will be allowed to take out armed rallies," a senior police officer said. ”

DTC revises wages of contractual drivers, announces incentives

In a move that will benefit thousands of its contract-based drivers, the national capital transporter DTC has revised wages and announced incentive for better performance. The Delhi Transport Corporation(DTC) Board in its meeting held in February this year had approved suggestions of a committee constituted to review wages to be paid to contractual drivers of DTC with immediate effect. As per the revised rates, contractual drivers will be now paid wages at the rate of Rs 6.65 per Km for first 2,250 Kms clocked by them as compared to the earlier Rs 5 for the same distance. Beyond this limit(2,250 Kms) they will be paid at the rate of Rs 6.96 per km as compared to Rs 6 for the same distance, said a government official.A circular was issued by the DTC earlier this month for payment of revised wages and incentives to the contractual drivers. In the form of incentive, an amount of of Rs 2,200 per month will be given for achieving 22 days physical attendance and operation of 95 per cent of the scheduled kilometers. An additional amount of Rs 200 per day, for maximum four days, for duty beyond 22 days will also be paid, and thus, the total amount can go up to Rs 3000, stated the circular. An amount of Rs 1400 per month will be given for achieving 22 days physical attendance and operation of 85 per cent of scheduled kilometers. An additional amount of Rs 150 per day (maximum four days) for duty beyond 22 days will also be paid, and thus, the total amount can go up to Rs 2000, it said. The DTC employs over 13,000 drivers to operate its more than 3700 buses. The number of contractual drivers is around 8000, said a DTC official. The incentives are payable to contractual drivers deployed on buses who manage to avoid any fatal or major accident during a given month. The criteria for hiring contractual drivers was revised and matriculation was introduced as an eligibility of candidates in 2008. Earlier, reading and writing ability was considered for the purpose. This change, however, led to problems in getting good drivers and so attempts have been made to attract eligible candidates by providing them better wages and incentives, said the official.

Yogi Adityanath govt trying to defame, harass political opponents in UP, claims Akhilesh Yadav

Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav today alleged that the BJP-led government in Uttar Pradesh was trying to defame and harass its political opponents in the name of inquiries, adding that it would reap the fruits of what it was sowing in the future. The former Uttar Pradesh chief minister also accused the Yogi Adityanath regime of “speaking lies and hoodwinking the people” as regards the projects launched by the previous SP government in the state.”The BJP-led state government only wants to defame and harass its political adversaries, as a result of which senior SP leader Azam Khan is being harassed in the name of recruitment in the Jal Nigam…though this government is not giving jobs, it is raising questions on the ones already given,” Yadav told reporters here.”Whether it is the Lucknow-Agra Expressway or the Gomti riverfront project of the previous government, this government is only speaking lies and hoodwinking the people…the political opponents are being humiliated through the investigating agencies…but it is also a fact that they will have to reap the fruits tomorrow of what they are sowing today,” he added.Referring to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurating an elevated road in Ghaziabad yesterday, Yadav said it was already inaugurated earlier.”He (Adityanath) charged us with spreading ‘parivarvad’ (dynasty politics) in his speech…I want to ask, which one is the ‘Yadav lane’ on the elevated road (that he inaugurated),” he added.Admitting that he had reached this place in politics because of “parivarvad”, the SP chief said he also had to face several challenges in his political career.”I admit that I am standing here today because of dynasty politics, but I have also had to prove my mettle before the public,” he said and asked Adityanath whether he would have reached this high, if it was not for “parivarvad”.To a question on Union minister Ramdas Athawale inviting Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president Mayawati to join the NDA, Yadav said, “Athawaleji is a very good minister. When I was an MP, no one else used to entertain the House as much as him.” To another question, he said the BJP was worried because of an understanding between the SP and BSP and wondered what would happen when there would be an understanding between “45 political parties” all over the country.Alleging that atrocities on Dalits had gone up under the BJP-led government in the state, the SP chief asked the ruling regime to do some development work.”Teachers, shiksha mitras and others are getting lathis, instead of jobs…the government is not able to find a way to give jobs on the existing vacancies,” he said.Yadav refused to reply to a query on an “understanding” between the SP and BSP for the coming Legislative Council election.

All Tamil Nadu Ministers barring CM Palaniswami, DY CM Panneerselvam to take part in fast on Cauvery issue

The entire AIADMK cabinet barring Chief Minister K Palaniswami and his deputy O Panneerselvam will participate in the April 3 fast to be observed by the party seeking formation of the Cauvery Management Board (CMB).According to the list released by the party, senior Ministers Dindigul C Sreenivasan (Forest), K A Sengottaiyan (School Education), P Thangamani (Electricity), D Jayakumar (Fisheries) and SP Velumani (Municipal Administration) among others will head the fast organised at different locations across the state. The party nominated seven functionaries from Puducherry including MLAs to observe fast in the neighbouring union territory on the issue.Senior party leaders, heads of various wings, MPs and MLAs were also named in the list released by the party. The protest will be held in all 32 districts of Tamil Nadu, besides in Puducherry, urging the Centre to constitute CMB and Central Water Regulatory Committee (CWRC).With the Cauvery issue appearing to be snowballing into an embarrassment for the ruling AIADMK which has largely been friendly with the Centre, the party on Friday made an announcement on observing the hunger strike next week.AIADMK coordinator Panneerselvam made the announcement while chairing a mass wedding function organised by the party at Madurai along with Palaniswami, the party co-coordinator.Meanwhile, the rival TTV Dhinakaran camp challenged the ruling dispensation to criticise Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the hunger strike.Dhinakaran aide V Pugazhenthi told reporters here that the chief minister and his deputy should speak out against the Centre.”The fast should not be a mere eyewash,” he said, while recalling a hunger strike conducted by Dhinakaran in Thanjavur last week on the same issue.Tamil Nadu’s stand is that the Centre must constitute the CWMB and CWRC.In its February 16 judgement, the apex court had raised the 270 tmcft share of Karnataka by 14.75 tmcft and reduced Tamil Nadu’s share of Cauvery water. The apex court granted six weeks time to the Centre to formulate a scheme to ensure compliance of its 465-page judgement, which modified the Cauvery Water Dispute Tribunal award.Following the verdict, Tamil Nadu has been urging the Centre to set up the CWMB and CWRC to ensure it received its due share of water from the inter-state river.

‘Scuttled holiday plans, clashes with entrance dates’: ‘Testing’ times for CBSE students

Scuttled holiday plans, clashes with entrance dates, another round of tuitions and above all the ‘phobia’ of facing the examination day yet again—-sum up the dilemma being faced by class 10 and 12 students of CBSE across the country.Aujaswi Maken, Class 10 student and Delhi Congress chief Ajay Maken’s son: “We are really disappointed. The CBSE chairman was aware of the leak of Mathematics paper a day before the examination. They should have cancelled the paper earlier itself. Many of us had plans to go for a vacation, but the plans stand cancelled now”.Vanshika, a Class 12 student who has to reappear for Economics paper: “First of all, the authorities should have ensured there was no paper leak. Why should we suffer and go through the same drill? The paper was so good and now we have to again prepare for it. Also, my film making entrance exams are clashing with the tentative dates being announced by CBSE on television”.Somasree Banik, a student from Kolkata: “The state Joint Entrance Board Engineering examinations will be held on April 22. Will the CBSE authorities explain how can one prepare for the Economics re-examination on April 25 while preparing for the engineering entrance which is far more tough?” Shreya, Class 10 student from Chennai:”I am feeling pressured and it is very difficult for me to study Maths again. Recalling all those formulae is tough. I have to again take tuitions and pay the fees. I feel that the coming paper (re-test) will be tougher. Also, my entrance exam for another school has also been affected”.Nikhil, Class 12 student from Amity International School, Gurgaon: “I used to spend 16 hours everyday to prepare for the board exams. And then you come to know that the papers have been leaked. What is the guarantee that the re-examination will not be tampered with? If our system is flawed, what is the fault of students?” Soumyadip Chandra, a Class 12 student of South Point High School in Kolkata: “All my plans have gone haywire with these developments. My preparations for admission to the Presidency University, Kolkata and Benaras Hindu University, where the entrance exams will be held in mid-April and May, respectively will now be affected”.Sneha Aggarwal, a student of Delhi Public School, Gurgaon: “I got to know that question papers were being offered at Rs 16,000 a night before the exam, and Rs 3,000 if one wanted it on the examination day. This is such a sorry state of affairs. I had planned to go out of station after the exams, but now I have to again face the exam”.Anisha Jain, Class 10 student from Delhi: “If such an incident happens, there should be a re-exam, but the energy levels of students will not be same as before. Punishing all students for a few people’s mistake is unfair”.Manisha, Class 12 student from Haryana:”My entrance tests are lined up from April 20. I had also enrolled myself for various crash courses. Now, what should I do? Should I prepare for the re-examination or the entrance? I am confused”.Rishabh, Class 10 student from Ambala:”There is confusion about the Maths re-test. It is adding to our stress level. The CBSE should clear the confusion”.

Bihar violence: 212 people arrested, 15 cases registred against accused

The Bihar police on Saturday said that they have arrested 212 people in connection with the violence in the state.”Attempts were made to disturb communal peace in some areas, however, police acted effectively with the help of central forces,” said police.SK Singhal, ADG HQ said 15 cases have been registered against the accused.Days after violence during Rama Navami celebrations, fresh clashes were erupted in Bihar over the vandalism of idol in Nawada on Friday.Last week, the situation became tense when rioters set ablaze more than 20 shops and pelted stones at those participating in a Rama Navami procession through Nawadih Colony.Nearly 50 shops near Jama Masjid located on Old GT Road were torched by rioters, while nearly 60 persons, including 20 policemen were injured due to stone pelting by miscreants. The situation further intensified on Monday, which thereby led to a curfew being imposed in the vicinity. In recent days, there have been increasing incidents of communal violence in some parts of the state. On Thursday, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav on Friday accused Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Chief Mohan Bhagwat of giving training on how to incite riots.”Mohan Bhagwat recently came to Bihar for 14 days. In these 14 days, he gave training on how to incite riots during Ram Navami. Now people are getting to know about the agenda of his Bihar visit,” claimed Tejashwi Yadav.Union Minister of State for Home Hansraj Ahir has blamed Bihar governments for communal violence in the state on Ram Navami while saying that it was their responsibility to maintain law and order.

Pak broke international norms over treatment of diplomats: VK Singh

Minister of State (MoS) for External Affairs General (Retd) VK Singh on Saturday criticised Pakistan for going above the law and breaking international norms over the treatment of each other’s diplomats.Speaking to ANI, General Singh said, “There are international norms on how the ambassador, high commissioners, diplomats and people who are visiting an embassy are treated. Unfortunately, those norms were broken by Pakistan and as usual, they blamed us something or the other.” He also urged Pakistan to adhere to international norms, treaties, and behaviours on how the diplomats are treated, in order to avoid such tussle in the future.General Singh further said that India was always respecting the international norms and will continue to do so.Earlier on March 22, the Indian High Commission sent a note verbale to the Pakistan High Commission reporting about four separate incidents of harassments with Indian Deputy High Commissioner, Naval Attache of the Mission, Deputy High Commissioner and the Second Secretary (Political) of the Mission. Further, the website of the High Commission of India was intermittently blocked by the attackers over a period of time affecting the normal functioning of the Mission. Earlier on March 19, two separate incidents of intimidation of four High Commission officials were reported by the sources. Also readIndia, Pakistan reach truce over diplomatic row, agree to resolve issue through talks Taking note of the matters, New Delhi and Islamabad on Friday agreed to mutually resolve concerns over the treatment of each other’s diplomats. A Ministry of External Affairs statement read, “India and Pakistan mutually agreed to resolve matters related to the treatment of diplomats and diplomatic premises, in line with the 1992 “Code of Conduct for the treatment ofdiplomatic/consular personnel in India and Pakistan”.

India increases deployment of troops along border with China near Tibetan region

India has deployed more troops and significantly increased patrolling in the mountainous terrains of Dibang, Dau-Delai and Lohit valleys along the borders with China in the Tibetan region in Arunachal sector following the Doklam face-off, the most tense military confrontations between the two countries in decades.Military officials said India is also strengthening its surveillance mechanism to keep an eye on Chinese activities along the borders in the strategically sensitive Tibetan region and has even been regularly deploying choppers to carry out recce. They said India has been focusing on dominating the treacherous terrains which include snow-clad mountains at an altitude of over 17,000 feet, and river passes, as part of a strategy to counter China’s rising assertiveness along the border in Dibang, Dau-Delai and Lohit valleys.Post Doklam, we have increased our activities manifold. We are fully prepared to deal with any challenge, said an army officer posted in Kibithu, the eastern most village on India’s border with China’s Tibetan region. The official said the Army has been enhancing its Long Range Patrols (LRPs) where troops in small groups go for patrols for 15-30 days as part of an overall approach to maintain the sanctity of the Line of Actual Control, the de-facto border between India and China.Troops of India and China were locked in a 73-day standoff in Doklam from June 16 last year after the Indian side stopped building of a road in the disputed area by the Chinese Army. The face-off ended on August 28.We have increased our deployment of troops while focusing on all the strategically important areas including a tri-junction among India, China and Myanmar, said the official who wished not to be quoted as he is not authorised to speak to the media. The official said China has been ramping up its infrastructure development along India’s border, particularly in the Tibetan region and there was a need for India to enhance its road network for quick movements of troops. The Army uses a foot suspension bridge to carry its military supplies to its Kibithu post, considered very important from operational point of view, as the only road connecting the East bank of Lohit river with West bank remains closed due to landslides for most part of the year. However, a senior official of the Border Roads Organisation said a number of roads including one to connect the Dibang Valley with Lohit Valley has been finalised which will improve the inter-valley connectivity in Arunachal.China has been laying new roads and improving its overall infrastructure along the nearly 4,000 km long border with India.Earlier this month, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had said China has undertaken construction of helipads, sentry posts and trenches for its army personnel near Doklam.Sources said China has been keeping its troops in north Doklam and significantly ramping up its infrastructure in the disputed area.In January, Army Chief Gen Bipin Rawat had said the time had come for India to shift its focus from borders with Pakistan to the frontier with China, indicating the seriousness of the situation.

BJP president Amit Shah on Saturday called the decision of the Karnataka government to give minority status to Lingayat community as a strategy to ‘polarise votes’.Addressing the media, the BJP chief termed the step as a part of plan chalked out to stop their chief ministerial candidate BS Yeddyurappa from becoming the chief minister.“This is a strategy to stop Yeddyurappa Ji from becoming Karnataka chief minister. They (Siddaramaiah government) want to polarise Lingayat votes but the community is aware of it. BJP will make its stance clear after polls,” Shah said.Shah said the Congress has become a ‘symbol of corruption’ and added that the people of Karnataka have made up their mind to change Siddaramaiah government. The elections to the 224-Karnataka Assembly will be held on May 12, while the counting of votes will take place on May 15Earlier Shah began his fourth round of visit to the poll-bound Karnataka with a tour of old Mysuru areas, asserting that Siddaramaiah and JDS would receive “biggest shock of their lives” from the region in the May 12 assembly polls.”It is said that the BJP is a bit weak here (Old Mysuru region), but after seeing the work of the party workers, I expect Siddaramaiahji and the JD(S) to get the biggest shock of their lives from this (Old) Mysuru region,” he told a party convention here.Shah is presently covering the districts of Mysuru, Chamarajanagara, Mandya and Ramanagara, where BJP had not won even a single seat in the previous election. The principal challenger to the ruling Congress is JDS in these districts.Referring to his gaffe at Davanagere earlier this week, Shah said though he had committed a mistake in his speech while referring to Siddaramaiah’s corruption, people of the state would not do the same because they knew Siddaramaiah’s rule well.

FIR lodged against Karnataka BJP MP Pralhad Joshi for comparing town in Hubli to Pakistan

An FIR has been lodged against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Pralhad Joshi. Joshi has been booked for inciting communal violence after making a controversial statement in Karnataka’s Hubli, news agency ANI reported.Reports coming in further added that the complaint was filed by one Mohammad Hanif, who has alleged that Joshi said that weapons were kept inside a mosque in Hubli district. At the time, Joshi was visiting the home of a man who had been killed in the area.Earlier in the day, BJP President Amit Shah asserted that Siddaramaiah and JDS would receive “biggest shock of their lives” from the region in May.The BJP chief made the statement while addressing party convention in Mysuru. The Election Commission had announced a single-phase election on May 12 for the 224-member Karnataka Legislative Assembly.Meanwhile, accusing Shah of violating the election code of conduct for allegedly giving Rs five lakh to a deceased party worker’s family, Karnataka Congress working president Dinesh Gundu Rao demanded his externment from the state.Rejecting the claims, BJP has said that Shah did not give any money to Raju’s family. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), too, complained to the Chief Electoral Officer, accusing Chief Minister Siddaramaiah of violating the model code of conduct by “bribing openly”.The complaint, signed by BJP General Secretary Ravi Kumar said that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah was canvassing at Chamundeshwari constituency at Mysore on March 29 and that during election campaigning, in ‘utter violation’ of the poll conduct, paid Rs 2,000 each to two women who welcomed him.

CBSE paper leak: 3 arrested, 9 minors detained in Jharkhand

In a fresh twist to CBSE paper leak, which shows that the extent of the scam was well beyond Delhi and Haryana, 3 have been arrested and 9 minors have been detained by Chatra police in Jharkhand. According to Chatra police, the three people arrested are part of a coaching institute called Study Vision which leaked question papers. 1 of them was arrested from Jharkhand and 2 from Bihar. FIRs have been filed against them based on relevant sections of IPC. 9 minors who have detained are class X students. They have been remanded to juvenile home. According to police, probe is on to nab the kingpin of the racket who leaked the questions to the coaching centre personnel. 8 people were rounded up on Friday and rest were nabbed by the police on Saturday. Superintendent of Police, Chatra said that currently SIT probe is underway and more details are likely to emerge soon. The 3 arrested are being questioned to find out the nature and extent of the leak. Also readCBSE paper leaks: Beyond the shame and the scandalAkhilesh Variar, Superintendent of Police, Chatra told TOI on Friday: “After an FIR was lodged by a local school principal about alleged paper leaks, the district police sprang into action. An SIT has been formed to probe the matter and we are working on a few interstate leads. The links of the paper leaks are being connected to Bihar.” Also readCBSE leak blot spreads; under attack, minister asks students to plug the leakMore proof emerged on Friday that CBSE and police knew about potential leaks but did not do enough to spare students the ordeal of retests. CBSE Chairman Anita Karwal had received an e-mail at 1:39 am on Wednesday, about nine hours before the maths exam was to begin, with 12 images of handwritten questions. The Board has shared this information with the police, which has now approached Google to track the person who sent the e-mail from [email protected] sender of the e-mail had said that the maths paper was leaked on WhatsApp, and that it should be cancelled. Also, one Chandan Gupta had approached the Delhi police after he received, via WhatsApp, nine maths questions at 10.40 pm on Tuesday itself.About 5 lakh Class XII students wrote their economics paper on Monday and 17 lakh Class X students wrote their maths paper on Wednesday. As reported earlier, CBSE had received a complaint by fax at 4.22 pm on Friday. An ‘unknown source’ said that a man named Vicky, who runs a coaching institute in West Delhi’s Rajinder Nagar, was involved in leaks. The complaint also named two schools in Rajinder Nagar for their involvement. Board handed over the fax complaint, WhatsApp messages and numbers to police on Saturday. CBSE again received at 6 pm on Monday an unaddressed envelope containing four sheets of handwritten answers of the economics paper. WhatsApp numbers which received the answers were also mentioned. The Class XII economics paper will now be re-conducted on April 25 across India. A decision on the Class X math exam will be taken in 15 days. If at all, a retest will happen in July, but only in Delhi Haryana where leaks were restricted, the government said on Friday. No retest in overseas centres because there was no leak there, it said.Gupta, a tutor in Outer Delhi’s Madipur area, received the message on his phone from one of his students. Suspecting the paper could have been leaked, he called the police control room. Cops reached his residence and took him away for questioning. Gupta’s friend Bimal Mishra at whose residence he was present when he received the questions said, “He called me next morning and told me he had called up the police. He was let off on Wednesday,” said Mishra. Police has seized Gupta’s mobile phone.

Inhumanity towards Dalits in Gujarat, yet Amit Shah comes to Karnataka with bag full of jumlas: Siddaramaiah

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday hit back at Amit Shah saying, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) comes to Karnataka with bag full of jumlas amid inhumanity towards Dalits in Gujarat. The Chief Minister was reacting to reports of a 21-year-old Dalit man’s killing for riding a horse in Gujarat’s Bhavnagar district. The deceased identified as Pradeep Rathod, was objected and threatened by some of his co-villagers to not ride the horse a few days back.Earlier this week, addressing the ST (Scheduled Tribe) convention in Karnataka’s Challakere, Amit Shah had said that the upcoming BJP government in Karnataka will ensure the welfare of the Tribal communities and will work for the upliftment of the Poor, Dalits and Tribals alike. However, taking a pot-shot at the BJP chief, Siddaramaiah said, “Kannadigas will not make the mistake of trusting this ‘Shah Of Lie.””Shocking inhumanity towards Dalits in Gujarat! Yet, a certain Gujarati gentleman comes here with a bag full of Jumlas and promises heaven to Dalits. If they question him, they are branded as Congress goons,” Siddaramaiah said in a Tweet.Meanwhile, Shah who is on the fourth round of visit to the poll-bound Karnataka state, has asserted that Siddaramaiah and JDS would receive “biggest shock of their lives” from the region in May.The BJP chief made the statement while addressing party convention in Mysuru. The Election Commission had announced a single-phase election on May 12 for the 224-member Karnataka Legislative Assembly.Shah is presently covering the districts of Mysuru, Chamarajanagara, Mandya and Ramanagara, where BJP had not won even a single seat in the previous election. The principal challenger to the ruling Congress is JDS in these districts.”Time has come to an end and he (Sidddaramaiah) would be mistaken if he thought that saffron ideology could be stalled by unleashing violence against BJP and RSS workers,” said Shah.”It is said that the BJP is a bit weak here (Old Mysuru region), but after seeing the work of the party workers, I expect Siddaramaiahji and the JD(S) to get the biggest shock of their lives from this (Old) Mysuru region.”Meanwhile, accusing Shah of violating the election code of conduct for allegedly giving Rs five lakh to a deceased party worker’s family, Karnataka Congress working president Dinesh Gundu Rao demanded his externment from the state.Rejecting the claims, BJP has said that Shah did not give any money to Raju’s family.

2016 Bihar toppers scam: ED attaches assets of main accused Bachha Rai

The ED today said it has attached assets worth Rs 4.53 crore, including 29 plots and deposits in ten bank accounts, of the main accused in the Bihar topper scam that had rocked the state in 2016.The action under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) against the Secretary cum Principal of Vishun Roy College in Vaishali district, Bachha Rai alias Amit Kumar, comes at a time when two CBSE question papers of Class X and XII have leaked and police is looking for culprits. The agency, in a statement, said it has attached 16 plots in the name of Bachha Rai in Lalganj, Mahua, Bhagwanpur and Hajipur and 13 plots in the name of his wife Sangeeta Rai.Bank deposits in the name of his daughter Shalini Rai, a flat in Patna and a two-storey house in Hajipur of the Rai family have also been attached. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had registered a money laundering case last year to probe alleged irregularities in this case, related to the state school examination board, taking cognisance of Bihar Police FIR and the findings of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted to probe the scam. The scam had rocked Bihar in June, 2016 after Ruby Rai, a student of Vishun Roy College in Vaishali district who had topped in the arts category, failed to answer basic questions and went on to describe political science as prodigal science that taught cooking.Embarrassed by the irregularities, the state government had ordered a SIT probe in the matter. It was alleged in the police charge sheet, the ED said, that Bachha Rai used to receive huge cash as illegal gratification from students for manipulating their results with the help of officers and staff of the Bihar School Education Board (BSEB) including the then Chairman Lalkeshwar Singh. The central probe agency said its probe found that Bachha Rai “has laundered his illicit wealth by acquiring huge properties in his name and that of his wife and daughter, which could not be explained by them.” “Further, proceeds of crime have been laundered through a trust run by his (Bachha Rai) family member.”Most of the properties have been purchased by them in cash, against which no corresponding withdrawal has been made from their bank accounts,” the agency said. The ED alleged Rai and his wife manipulated their Income Tax returns and their agricultural income was declared “almost 70 times more” after the scam broke, as compared to previous years. The agency had booked a a total of eight people, including former BSEB chairman Prasad and four principals. This is the first attachment in the case and the ED said further probe in the case “is in progress.”

WB Governor visits violence-hit Asansol, takes stock of law and order situation

West Bengal Governor KN Tripathi on Saturday held an hour-long meeting with senior police and administration officials here and took stock of the situation in violence-hit areas of Raniganj and Asansol. One person was killed and two police officers suffered serious injuries on Monday when clashes broke out between two groups over a Ram Navami procession in Raniganj area of Bardhaman West district. The violence fanned out to Asansol areas, prompting police to suspend Internet services and clamp prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC in trouble-torn areas of the district. The governor, who reached Asansol circuit house this morning, is scheduled to visit the violence-hit areas of Raniganj and Asansol areas later in the day.Earlier this week, the state government had advised him against visiting Asansol and Raniganj, citing security reasons. Union minister Babul Supriyo and state BJP Mahila Morcha president Locket Chatterjee were also stopped from entering the Asansol-Raniganj area by police on Thursday. The Imam of Noorani Masjid, Imdatullah Rashid, had said that his son was also killed in the violence but there was no confirmation from the police on the incident. Rashid had also appealed for peace in the area. Prohibitory orders are still in force as the situation here is tense, a senior police officer said. “No fresh incident of violence was reported from the area in last three days,” he said, adding that a huge contingent of the police and the Rapid Action Force (RAF) is patrolling the area.State BJP general secretary Sayantan Basu on Friday said a delegation of party leaders would visit Raniganj and Asansol, which had recently witnessed clashes between two groups over Ram Navami processions. The BJP delegation would visit the troubled areas to assess the situation and submit its report to party president Amit Shah, he added. Also readRam Navami clashes: BJP President Amit Shah forms committee, to visit Asansol and file reportThe four-member delegation would comprise BJP national spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain, party MPs Roopa Ganguly and O P Mathur and senior leader V D Ram, Basu said. “The dates are yet to be finalised, but they will visit Raniganj either tomorrow or the day after,” he added. Reacting to the proposed visit of the BJP delegation, Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and Asansol Municipal Corporation mayor Jitendra Tiwari alleged that the leaders of the saffron party wanted to visit the area to incite violence in order to divide the people on religious lines.Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had held a high-level meeting at the secretariat in Kolkata yesterday, after returning from New Delhi, to review the situation in the Asansol-Raniganj area. The chief secretary, the home secretary, the director general of police (DGP) and the ADGP (law and order) were present at the meeting.

Andhra Pradesh: Four pilgrims killed as pandals collapse after heavy rains

Four pilgrims were killed and over 50 others injured at the ancient Ram temple in Ontimitta in Kadapa district when the pandals collapsed as gales accompanied by heavy rain lashed the district, police said. The incident occurred minutes ahead of the arrival of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu last night for the celestial wedding of Lord Rama as part of Rama Navami celebrations, resulting in chaos at the temple, a senior police official said.Sudden rain coupled with strong winds lashed Ontimitta at around 6.40 pm, some 20 minutes before the chief minister was scheduled to arrive to present silk clothes to the Lord. The chaos was compounded due to power outage. The main event was, however, not affected because of a huge rain-proof pandal and provision of generators. The chief minister arrived over 90 minutes behind schedule because of rain and took part in the rituals. However, the specially-erected pandals for the pilgrims were soaked with rain water while the tin sheet roofs of the pandals were blow away by the gale. While two persons died when uprooted tin sheets fell on them, one woman died of heart attack and another of electrocution, a police official said over phone from Kadapa.Initially, only one body was found late in the night but the others were traced after thousands of pilgrims left the venue.About 40 of the injured were shifted to the Rajiv Institute of Medical Sciences in Kadapa for treatment. After attending the celestial wedding, the chief minister visited RIMS at Kadapa and met those undergoing treatment. He announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 15 lakh each to the kin of those killed and Rs three lakh each to those seriously injured.A senior official said an inquiry is being conducted into the various lapses that led to the tragedy at the festival.

Karnataka Election: On Siddaramaiah’s home turf, Amit Shah says Congress will get biggest shock of their lives

The Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) Chief Amit Shah who is on the fourth round of visit to the poll-bound Karnataka state, has asserted that Siddaramaiah and JDS would receive “biggest shock of their lives” from the region in May.The BJP chief made the statement while addressing party convention in Mysuru. The Election Commission had announced a single-phase election on May 12 for the 224-member Karnataka Legislative Assembly.Shah is presently covering the districts of Mysuru, Chamarajanagara, Mandya and Ramanagara, where BJP had not won even a single seat in the previous election. The principal challenger to the ruling Congress is JDS in these districts. Also readModi won’t do anything for poor, will destroy nation: Amit Shah’s translator goofs up at Karnataka rally”Time has come to an end and he (Sidddaramaiah) would be mistaken if he thought that saffron ideology could be stalled by unleashing violence against BJP and RSS workers,” said Shah.”It is said that the BJP is a bit weak here (Old Mysuru region), but after seeing the work of the party workers, I expect Siddaramaiahji and the JD(S) to get the biggest shock of their lives from this (Old) Mysuru region.”Meanwhile, accusing Shah of violating the election code of conduct for allegedly giving Rs five lakh to a deceased party worker’s family, Karnataka Congress working president Dinesh Gundu Rao demanded his externment from the state.Rejecting the claims, BJP has said that Shah did not give any money to Raju’s family.”Amit Shah should not come to Karnataka as his intentions are very clear- to vitiate the election atmosphere and to violate the law. Today’s incident is the best example for it,” Rao told reporters. Also readKarnataka CM Siddaramaiah hits back at Amit Shah for calling him ‘Ahindu’On Tuesday, Amit Shah had described his party’s former government led by BS Yeddyurappa as “number one” in corruption while seeking to accuse the incumbent Congress regime in the state of graft. However, the Congress said its campaign in Karnataka had started on a fabulous note as it took a swipe at BJP president. Congress President Rahul Gandhi also poked fun at the BJP over a tweet from a member of the party’s IT cell which mentioned the polling date in Karnataka before the Election Commission had announced it.He tweeted, “Gifted to us by the BJP president, our campaign in Karnataka is off to a fabulous start. He says Yeddyurappa ran the most corrupt Government ever… True.” (With inputs from agency)
