PM Narendra Modi talks of Buddhism as part of his outreach

Continuing his policy to utilise the cultural significance of Buddhism for his diplomatic outreach internationally and placate the Dalit community domestically, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Buddha Jayanti celebrations organised by the Ministry of Culture in collaboration with the International Buddhist Confederation (IBC) on Monday. After paying respects to Buddha relics, brought for the occasion from the National Museum to the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, the PM said India made no distinction between religions and had no history of attacking other countries or schools of thought.”In today’s world, humanity and compassion had become even more relevant,” Modi said, speaking at the event. In a bid to engage with Dalits, Modi said discrimination on race, caste, creed was part of Indian and Buddhist ideologies. In 2015, Modi had announced to commemorate Buddha Jayanti Day as an annual national event.Soon after assuming office in 2014, the PM brought a definite shift in India’s diplomatic approach towards the East Asia, by laying emphasis on the Buddha diplomacy.Since then he had played the Buddha card, highlighting India as the place of origin of Buddhism.Speaking at the event, PM Modi said the teachings of the Buddha were based on humanity, and the country was proud the philososphy had originated here.He also offered “sangh dana” (donation) to Buddhist monks who had come from Japan, Sri Lanka and Vietnam. He also presented the Vaishakh Sammaan Prashasti Patra to the Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies, Sarnath, and the All India Bhikshu Sangha, Bodh Gaya.He also highlighted the role played by Buddhism in the cultural integration of the country. The moves have been seen largely as part of a strategy to placate the anger brewing in the Dalit community for several reasons, including incidents of atrocities in the BJP ruled states. He indicated such a change in emphasis by his first official visit abroad to a neighbouring Buddhist country in South Asia, Bhutan and then to Nepal where Lord Buddha was born. His first official visit outside South Asia was to another Buddhist country, Japan. Not only India, over the years, China as well as even Pakistan is using the Buddhist card as a measure of diplomatic outreach. China is also using Buddhism to increase its influence in nearby regions by international Buddhist gatherings discreetly supporting the Drukpa Kagyu Rimpoche in Ladakh and also helping the development of Lumbni—birthplace of Lord Buddha in Nepal. Pakistan also uses its ancient site Taxila in the outskirts of Islamabad as an outreach. Recently it presented its rich Buddhist legal to Sri Lanka, by sending most sacred relics of Lord Buddha to Colombo to commemorate Buddha Rashmi National Vesak festival.

Lalu Prasad Yadav cries political conspiracy as AIIMS wheels him out for Ranchi

A controversy erupted on Monday when RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav alleged a political conspiracy in his being discharged from Delhi’s AIIMS to Ranchi where he is lodged in multiple fodder scam cases. During the departure, Yadav argued with a policeman at New Delhi Railway Station: “This policemen is asking me to step back, saying that the SP said so, is the SP my boss?”AIIMS doctors said Yadav’s health had improved and he was fit to travel by train. The Delhi police said it was registering a case against Yadav’s men for violence and damaging property on the basis of a complaint given by India’s premier government hospital.”This is a conspiracy to endanger my health. I am being shifted to a place where there are no facilities,” Yadav said.He also wrote to AIIMS director Randeep Guleria: “If my life is threatened by this decision, then you (AIIMS) will be held responsible.” “I am still unwell.. I am still unable to walk and facing unconsciousness throughout the day. The hospital in Ranchi does not have proper medical facilities. Doctors are gods for us and they should not take any decision under political pressure,” Yadav wrote.”My back hurts and I feel dizzy… I have fallen in the bathroom several times. My pressure and sugar keep shooting up,” said the former Bihar CM.Yadav’s younger son Tejashwi Prasad Yadav questioned the “pressure” under which AIIMS decided to discharge him, “even though his health is not well.” AIIMS said Yadav was being referred back to Ranchi’s Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences for treatment. “He is stable and fit to travel,” the hospital said. Yadav was admitted to AIIMS on March 29 after he complained of high blood sugar, infection and perianal abscess (a disease caused by collection of pus in tissues around the anus and rectum). While Yadav was getting discharged, some unidentified men created ruckus and misbehaved with AIIMS staff. A security guard of the hospital was injured. “They also damaged the glass door of a lab and injured the security guard who was standing outside. We have filed a police complaint,” said a senior doctor from the institute. The medical institute had formed a board comprising senior faculty members from the departments of medicine, surgery and cardiology. “His blood sugar was controlled and evaluation for cardiac and renal status was also done. His condition was improving and he complained of no fever. The board reviewed his health again on April 28 and decided that he was fit to be discharged,” said a senior doctor from the hospital.

4 arrested for Bihar molestation horror, police hunts others

Police caught four persons, including a minor on Monday, a day after a video went viral showing a teen crying and pleading for mercy as six molesters laugh and rip her clothes off and nobody helps in Bihar’s Jehanabad. Senior police officer Naiyyar Hasnain Khan said in Patna, “They have been arrested for assaulting and stripping the girl. The other two were shooting the incident.” Khan had formed a special team to investigate the case after police received a video clip late on April 28.Those arrested include locals Amar Kumar, Deepak Kumar and Sunil Kumar, all 18, and a 14 year-old.”There were four-five other boys involved and will be rounded up soon,” Khan said. Police is searching houses and talking to villagers to identify the rest of the attackers.A motorcycle seen in the video with Jehanabad’s registration number became a clue for police. “The bike and a mobile phone used to shoot the crime have been seized,” he said. Police is trying to identify the survivor and approach her family. The girl is undergoing counselling. In the widely shared video shot in Jehanabad’s Bharathua village, she is seen helplessly fighting and begging with folded hands as the accused touch and abuse her. One accused can be seen lifting her off her feet as she tries to kick him and wriggle herself out.Police is looking for a man from Uttar Pradesh’s Allahabad who allegedly posted the video on social media. The suspect has 30,000 Facebook followers. Police is trying to find out how and why the video travelled from Jehanabad to Allahabad.Police lodged an FIR at under the Indian Penal Code and the stringent Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) POCSO Act.A new law for death to those raping children below 12 came into force in India on April 22, in response to days of unspeakable brutalities and subsequent outrage across states, but cases continue to pour in from various parts of the country.Three weeks ago, anger, shock and protests swept India when chilling details emerged of how an eight-year-old girl had been kidnapped, drugged, raped and battered to death in captivity by eight persons in Jammu’s Kathua in January.

BJP leader Chaudhary Lal Singh rally to demand for a CBI probe into Kathua case

On the day Mehbooba Mufti inducted seven new ministers in her cabinet, former J&K forest minister and senior BJP leader Chaudhary Lal Singh led a major rally in Kathua, demanding CBI probe in the rape and murder case of the eight-year-old tribal nomad girl.Supporters of Singh took out a bike rally, shouting slogans and demanding a CBI probe into the case, even as the new deputy chief minister, Kavinder Gupta, said the case is sub-judice and the court will decide on a future course of action. An unrelenting Singh, however, said the fight for CBI probe will intensify till the government accepts the demand.”Entire province knows that we have been demanding CBI probe. Till CBI enquiry is not announced, this fight will continue. And we will intensify it”, said Singh.Singh and former industries minister Chander Prakash Ganga had to quit under pressure to save the PDP-BJP government in the state. Both Singh and Ganga had participated in the Hindu Ekta Manch rally supporting the accused and demanding the CBI probe.”I am fighting for the people of Jammu. My fight will continue till CBI probe is announced,” he said.

Two Hizbul Mujahedeen commanders dead in gunbattle with Army

The Hizbul Mujahedeen suffered a major setback on Monday when security forces gunned down two of its top commanders involved in the recent assassination of Pro-India mainstream leader Ghulam Nabi Patel in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district. Two Army soldiers, including a Major, were also injured in the incident.Tensions, however, rose after a 25-year-old civilian was also killed and several others injured in the clashes that followed. The encounter started in the wee hours after security forces received a tip-off about the presence of high value target in the Drubgam village of Pulwama district. A joint party of 44 Rashtriya Riffles, 182nd/183rd battalion of CRPF along with Pulwama Police cordoned off the area and started the search operation. When the troops were moving towards a target house, they came under heavy fire from the hiding terrorists. In the ensuing encounter two militants of Hizbul were killed.”They have been identified as Sameer Ahmad Bhat alias Sameer Tiger of Drubgam Village and Aqib Mushtaq Khan of Rajpora Pulwama”, said a police spokesman.Director General of Police, Jammu and Kashmir, Dr Shesh Paul Vaid said Sameer was involved in the killing of Ghulam Nabi Patel.”Sameer was involved in the assassination of Patel, but I am not sure about the other one. Sameer was active in the area for the last two years and he looted banks and guards. He was also involved in civilian and political killings. He had escaped five to six times previously, but law catches on,” he said.3 CIVILIAN KILLEDIn another incident, suspected terrorists killed three civilians in cold blood on Monday evening. Police said militants surfaced near Khanpora market in Baramulla and fired indiscriminately on the three civilians killing them on the spot.

Why hype Kathua? it’s a small issue: J&K Dy CM Kavinder Gupta

BJP MLA Kavinder Gupta debuted as Jammu and Kashmir’s new Deputy Chief Minister with a shocker on Monday when he said that the Kathua rape and murder is a small incident and should not be given so much hype. J&K’s main Opposition party, National Conference, attacked Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti’s government that also inducted BJP’s Kathua MLA, Rajiv Jasrotia, who was allegedly seen in support of those accused of the horrific crime.Jasrotia was inducted into the council of ministers apparently to offset BJP’s unpopularity. On April 13, two BJP ministers had to quit after they were seen at a rally that sought a CBI probe so that no “injustice” was done to eight persons accused of kidnapping, drugging, raping and battering to death an eight-year-old girl at Rassana village in Jammu’s Kathua in January.”Rassana is a small incident. We should ensure such incidents do not occur and the girl gets justice. There are so many challenges before the government.”We should not give hype to Rassana incident”, Gupta told mediapersons shortly after taking oath. The rejig was aimed at undoing the damage done by the previous ministers. Gupta, who was earlier the Speaker of J&K’s Legislative Assembly, parried questions about demands for a CBI probe into the crime. “The case is sub-judice and courts will decide”, he said.”So BJP’s new Deputy CM Kavinder Gupta says the Rassana rape and murder was not a big issue, and the party elevates the same MLA as a minister who participated in the pro-rapist Hindu Ekta Manch rally! What a shame! Will Mehbooba Mufti accept this? Disappointing if she does!” tweeted NC spokesperson Junaid Azim Mattu.”Two BJP ministers removed for attending a pro-rapist rally and an MLA who is reported to have attended the same rally is promoted as a minister. Why are BJP/ Mehbooba Mufti confused about where they stand on the Kathua rape?” tweeted Omar Abdullah, NC leader and former J&K CM.Gupta, who represents prestigious Gandhi Nagar constituency of Jammu, was among seven ministers sworn in by J&K Governor NN Vohra in Jammu on Monday morning.Undeterred by the controversy, J&K CM Mehbooba Mufti hoped that the new team of ministers would do better work. “Old team had done good work. Now new team has come, They are young and educated and I hope they will do more good work”, she said. The Deputy CM played down the reshuffle and said the government had completed three years so new faces should also get a chance. Outgoing Deputy CM Dr Nirmal Singh will replace Gupta as the new Speaker.BJP general secretary Ram Madhav also said that the reshuffle had nothing to do with the Kathua rape and murder case. He, however, dodged questions over the inclusion of Jasrotia.Three weeks ago, anger, shock and protests swept India when chilling details of the Kathua case emerged for the first time. A new law for death to those raping children below 12 came into force in India on April 22, in response to days of unspeakable brutalities and subsequent outrage across states, but cases continue to pour in from various parts of the country.

Sushil Modi fires fresh salvo at Lalu Yadav, alleges undue ‘favours’ extended to Tatas

In a fresh offensive against Lalu Prasad, Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Modi today accused the RJD leader and his family of buying a posh property from Tata group through shell companies at a ‘throw-away price’ and of extending undue favours to the conglomerate.Reacting to the allegations, the RJD accused Modi of indulging in “below the belt politics”. The BJP leader, who has been continuously accusing Lalu Prasad and his family of financial irregularities, launched his fresh attack on a day when the RJD supremo, serving a jail term in fodder scam cases, left AIIMS on a wheelchair after being discharged by the hospital in the national capital, even as his party termed the move a “conspiracy to murder him”. The Rashtriya Janata Dal president had written to the AIIMS director, asking that his treatment be continued at the hospital till he recovered. In Bihar’s capital, Sushil Modi asserted that both Lalu Prasad and Rabri Devi during their tenures as chief ministers had extended favours to the Tatas and in return the industry house too extended favours to the RJD chief and his family. No immediate comments were available from Tata group. Asked why did not he get the matter probed as the NDA government is in power at Centre as well as in the state, Modi said it would be better for Lalu Prasad’s family, the owner of the property, to speak about it.Besides, the Income Tax Department should ask Tata company why it sold the property to a fake company, he said. Referring to a sale deed, Modi said the Income Tax department had in February attached a 7105 sq ft two-storeyed house at 5, Riding Road in Patna, located close to the airport and registered in the name of ‘Fairglow Holding Pvt Ltd’. The BJP leader alleged that this is the sixth shell company through which Prasad’s family has acquired benami properties and modus operandi in this case was the same as the others – that they bought the property through a sick company, which had no turnover nor any business, employee and negligible investment before finally becoming directors of the company. The sale deed was executed in 2002 when Rabri Devi was the Bihar chief minister, Modi said and questioned how Tejashwi, his elder brother Tej Pratap Yadav and sister Ragini had become directors of the sick company later. The sale deed showed one Prabhat Sinha, the Chief M&S Administration, TISCO, Kolkata, as the vendor representing the steel company, he said. “Lalu Prasad’s family including his son Tejashwi Prasad Yadav acquired a two-storeyed building of Tata Iron and Steel Company located in a posh locality of Patna worth crores through a shell company named ‘Fairgrow Holding Pvt. Ltd.,” he said.Modi also alleged that the RJD chief’s daughters Misa Bharti and Rohini Acharya were admitted to Tata Medical College, Jamshedpur on Tata quota. Daughters of former RJD minister and RJD leader Iliyas Hussain and ex-MLC Anwar Ahmad were also admitted to medical college through Tata’s seat quota, he accused.Modi questioned why Tatas sold the property in a prime location “at a throw away price to a fake and sick company” and how did Lalu Prasad’s family members became directors of a sick company 10 years after the execution of the sale deed. He also demanded to know the identity of one Rajesh Kumar who he alleged of paying Rs 65 lakh on behalf of Lalu Prasad’s family at the time of the registry of the property.Modi said Tejashwi Yadav has not responded to any of his charges and instead used abusive language against him.Lodging of cases relating to benami land transactions against Tejashwi Yadav by the Enforcement Directorate and IT Department had triggered a political upheaval in the state in July last year and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had walked out of the Grand Alliance comprising his JD(U), RJD and the Congress and returned to the BJP-led NDA. Reacting to Sushil Modi’s charges, RJD spokesman and MLA Shakti Singh Yadav said his ‘expose’ showed that he was “mentally bankrupt”.”Everything is in the people’s domain. He (Sushil Modi) has termed even Tejashwi Prasad Yadav’s registered properties as benami,” Yadav said. Terming Modi’s accusations as “below the belt politics”, he said that Sushil Modi’s politics thrives on criticising or making allegations against Lalu Prasad and his family. In a counter-attack, the RJD spokesperson asked why Modi has not explained how his brother became owner of Rs 10,000 crore real estate property despite hailing from a modest background.

Fresh plea in Supreme Court against polygamy, nikah halala

A woman, who along with her three minor kids were thrown out of the matrimonial home after her husband re-married, has moved the Supreme Court seeking to declare the practices of polygamy and ‘nikah halala’ among Muslims as unconstitutional. While polygamy allows a Muslim man to have four wives, ‘nikah halala’ deals with the process in which a Muslim woman, who wants to re-marry her husband after divorce, has to first marry another person and get a divorce from him after the consummation. The fresh plea assumes significance as the apex court, on March 26, has already referred to a five-judge constitution bench a batch of petitions challenging the constitutional validity of polygamy and ‘nikah halala’ among the Muslims. Rani alias Sabnam, in her petition filed through lawyer and BJP leader Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay, referred to the sequence of events in her life and said she had married one Muzammil on February 8, 2010 as per the Shariayat rites and was blessed with two sons and a daughter. She said her parents spent about Rs five lakh, including gold and silver ornaments as dowry, in her marriage. However, she was later harassed and forced out of the matrimonial home here after her husband re-married.The woman, who is currently living with her children at the home of in-laws in Bulandshahr town of Uttar Pradesh after neighbours came forward in their support, has moved the top court for declaring these practices as unconstitutional. “The instant petition raises an important issue of General Public Interest i.e. prevalent practice of Polygamy including Nikah-Halala which is unconstitutional and even then the same is prevailing in our country. The said practices which certainly comes within the domain of personal law cannot be immune from judicial review under the constitution,” it said. The plea, which may come up for hearing during the week before a bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra, said that “extra-judicial talaq” amounted to cruelty and be made an offence under section 498A (subjecting a married woman to cruelty) of the IPC.It also sought that the practice of ‘nikah halala’ be considered as the offence of rape under the IPC. Union ministries of Woman and Child Welfare, Law and Minority Affairs and National Commission for Woman have been made parties to the litigation. The top court had on April 23 directed the Centre to respond to a separate plea seeking to declare the provisions of Muslim Personal Law (Shariat) validating the practice of polygamy and ‘nikah halala’ as unconstitutional. It had also ordered tagging of the petition, filed by Lucknow resident Naish Hasan on the same issue.Hasan, in the petition also filed through Upadhyay, had said the pivotal issue that needed to be answered was whether under a secular Constitution, women, merely by virtue of their religious identity, can be relegated to a status significantly more vulnerable than their counterparts professing other faiths. The apex court had on March 26 referred a batch of pleas challenging the practice of polygamy and others to the constitution bench. The bench had considered the submission that an earlier five-judge constitution bench, in its 2017 verdict, had kept open the issue of polygamy and ‘nikah halala’ while quashing triple talaq.By a majority of 3:2, a five-judge constitution bench, on August 22 last year, had banned the 1,400 year-old practice of instant ‘triple talaq’ among Sunni Muslims and set it aside on several grounds including that it was against the basic tenets of the Holy Quran and violated the Islamic law Shariat.

Earlier, former Finance Minister P Chidambaram said that the prime minister’s claim was a complete jumla and that he was taking credit of the work of previous governments. Army Major who killed Hizbul terrorist Sameer Tiger currently battling for life

Major Rohit Shukla has been hailed a hero for gunning down Hizbul Mujahideen commander Sameer Bhat alias Sameer Tiger in Kashmir on Monday. However, during the encounter Major Shukla was critically injured as well.A day before the encounter, a viral video of the terrorist threatening Shukla did the rounds. In the video, the Hizbul commander is seen interrogating an informer about the whereabouts of the Indian Army. Tiger is then seen warning the informer of not sharing information of the Hizbul operatives with the Army.At the end of the video, Tiger, whose face cannot be seen, is heard saying, “When the lion stops hunting, dogs believe that the jungle belongs to them. I challenge Shukla to come face-to-face.”Also readAll you need to know about Sameer Tiger, the Hizbul terrorist who was killed by the Indian ArmyIt appears that Shukla took the challenge up and although he suffered serious injuries, he ended up killing the dreaded terrorist. Shukla was admitted to an army hospital in Srinagar with chest injuries. His condition is said to be critical. Bhat, who was also known as “Abbasi” and “Faisal”, met his end in the village after a six-hour gunbattle around 2.15 pm, they said. Also readTwo Hizbul terrorists, including commander Sameer Tiger killed in encounter; 2 armymen also hurtThe morning began with security forces, acting on a tip-off that militants were holed up inside a house, cordoning the area.Around noon, security personnel, who were fighting stone pelting from the civilians, fired heavily at the house, causing an explosion, officials said.About an hour later, the first militant, identified as Aaquib Mushtaq, was killed. He was a local resident belonging to Rajpora area of Pulwama.Shortly after, Bhat, who is alleged to have carried out several political and civilian killings in Pulwama area, was gunned down, the officials added. He hit the national limelight in November 2017 as the long-haired youth with piercing eyes looking directly into the camera posing with an American M4 carbine in an orchard somewhere in south Kashmir, triggering a debate on how the US-made weapon came to be in the Valley. The photograph was circulated widely on social media. The man who terrorised the entire Kashmir Valley started out as a chronic stone pelter, officials said. The Class 8 dropout emerged as another poster boy for the Hizbul Mujahideen after the death of Burhan Wani in July 2016.Three months before that, Bhat was picked up by the Jammu and Kashmir police in March 2016 after he was caught pelting stones on security personnel. He was just 18 years old at the time.He was then counselled by police for nearly two weeks and let off with a condition that he would continue with his studies. Instead, one day, not very long after, his parents approached the Drabgam police station and registered a missing report about their son, officials recounted.Bhat had fled into the jungles of adjoining Tral and joined the Hizbul Mujahideen militant group besides extending help to other terror outfits.According to senior police officials, Bhat persuaded about 80 people to join the militancy movement in south Kashmir and repeatedly managed to escape the police dragnet — until now. After Burhan Wani’s death, videos of a bearded, long-haired Bhat appeared on various social networking sites in a bid to entice Kashmiri youths to become militants. He is also alleged to have abducted small time political workers and police informers, torture them and record their agony. Bhat would then release the films on social networking sites to scare people. With PTI Inputs

PM Modi to start campaigning in Karnataka, Siddaramaiah asks pointed questions on Twitter

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch his campaign blitzkrieg tomorrow in poll-bound Karnataka to add heft to the BJP’s efforts to unseat the Congress from power and form its government in the southern state for a second time.Modi, who last visited Karnataka for campaigning in” February, will be addressing rallies at Santhemarahalli in” Chamarajanagara district, and Udupi and Chikkodi in Belagavi” tomorrow.Ahead of his Udupi rally, Modi is scheduled to visit” Krishna matha and meet the senior seer there. At least a dozen rallies are expected to follow in the coming days, party sources said.Polling for the 224-member Assembly will be held on May 12, and results will be”declared on the 15th of the month. On the eve of Modi’s visit, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah posed questions to Modi on Twitter while welcoming him to the state.”Dear @narendramodi, Heard you are visiting Namma” Karnataka tomorrow. We welcome you to our state. While you are” here, we Kannadigas would like you to address the following” concerns. Please #AnswerMaadiModi,” Siddaramaiah tweeted. In a series of tweets, assailed the prime minister over BJP giving tickets to “tainted” mining baron G Janardhan Reddy’s brothers and associates as also declaring Yeddyurappa its chief ministerial candidate.”Would G Janardhan Reddy be joining your rallies here?”You have given his family & friends 8 tickets, hoping it will”help BJP in 10-15 seats. And then, you lecture us on” corruption. Please end this hypocrisy. Kannadigas aren’t” wearing Kamala (lotus, the BJP’s election symbol) on their ears,” Siddaramaiah wrote.”You first make scam tainted @BSYBJP your party’s CM” face in Karnataka. Then media reports that you don’t want to” be seen sharing the stage with him at rallies! Karnataka wants”to know if Yeddyurappa is still your CM candidate?” he wrote in another tweet.Raising issues like tickets being given to “rape” accused and MLAs who watched porn in the Assembly”, the chief minister also hit out at Modi over promises that were not kept.In tweets that followed, Siddaramaiah referred to incidents of rape in Uttar Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. He alleged Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath “protected” a BJP MLA accused of sexual assault, while party MLAs defended”the rapists of a child in Jammu and Kashmir.”And then your party makes bombastic Ads to” politicise rape in Karnataka?!” Siddaramaiah said.Siddaramaiah also said the Modi government had failed to create jobs for young people and advised them to sell ‘pakodas’ instead. He attacked the prime minister over demonetisation, and not waiving farm loans.During Modi’s earlier visit, Siddarmaiah”had welcomed him and asked him to address the Mahadayi water sharing dispute with neighboring Goa.The prime minister had hit back at Siddaramaiah, calling his dispensation “10 per cent government”, the one that took 10 per cent commission for development works.

India has never been an aggressor nor an encroacher upon anyone’s territory: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said India has never been an aggressor nor encroached upon anyone’s territory and saw no distinction between religions, castes and languages.Speaking at an event here on the occasion of Buddha Purnima, he said the teachings of the Buddha were based on humanity and the country was proud the philosophy had originated here.”India has never had a history or tradition of attacking others’ ideology or country. India has never been an aggressor. It has never encroached upon (the territory) of any other country,” Modi said addressing a gathering at the function organised by the Ministry of Culture. While speaking on the teachings of the Buddha, Modi said all ideologies which had originated in India were based on the welfare of humankind and the environment. The teachings of the Buddha had shaped the national character of several Asian countries, he said.”At a time when terrorism, casteism, dynasty politics appear to be overshadowing the teachings of the Buddha, the talk of affection and friendship are becoming more relevant and important,” Modi said.”Distinctions in society, between religions, races, castes and languages can never be a message of India or the teachings of the Buddha, and nor can there be a place for such thoughts,” he added. He asserted that the country embraced individuals from any caste, religion, race or faith.Modi cited the example of Jews and Parsis, and said they had been residing in India for centuries and had become an integral part of India’s identity. The prime minister said B R Ambedkar also trod the path of the Buddha.Modi spoke about the eight-fold path of Buddhism and said the problems that the world faced could be overcome by following this way.His government was working with compassion to serve the people, in line with these teachings, he said.In this context, he listed his government’s flagship initiatives such as opening bank accounts for the underprivileged, enabling a low-cost premium insurance scheme, free gas connections to poor households and other measures for the welfare of the poor.He also said the Union government was working with an elaborate vision to preserve the cultural heritage of India, which includes the heritage associated with Lord Buddha. He said a sum of Rs 360 crore had been approved for a Buddhist Circuit.Modi said 18 states had sites related to the Buddha and it was essential to develop these places for pilgrims and others.Accordingly, the Ministry of Road Transport was making provisions for necessary arrangements on the Kushinagar, Gaya and Varanasi routes, Modi said. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), the prime minister said, was also helping in the restoration of Buddhist sites in Afghanistan, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and Myanmar.Modi urged Culture Minister Mahesh Sharma to ensure that all works on the Buddha and studies done by Buddhist institutes in the country are compiled and brought on a common platform through a web portal in a time-bound manner. The prime minister also exhorted the gathering to make a contribution towards the New India of 2022, when the country would celebrate 75 years of freedom. He offered “Sangh Dana” (donation) to Buddhist monks from countries such as Japan, Sri Lanka and Vietnam who were present at the event. He also presented the Vaishakh Sammaan Prashasti Patra to the Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies, Sarnath, and the All India Bhikshu Sangha, Bodh Gaya.Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju said at the event that after Emperor Asoka, it was Prime Minister Modi who had given Buddha Purnima political honour (rajkiya samman).

BJP resorting to conspiracies in Karnataka, appeal Telugu people in state to defeat them: Chandrababu Naidu

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu on Monday appealed Telugu people in Karnataka to defeat Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the upcoming state election.”I am appealing to all Telugu people in Karnataka to defeat the BJP, which is resorting to collusion politics and conspiracies in Karnataka elections,” Chandrababu Naidu said at TDP’s public meeting in Tirupati.Polling for the 224-member Karnataka Assembly will be held on May 12, and results will be declared on the 15th of the month. The Chief Minister also said that Narendra Modi appealed to voters whether they want ‘Swarna Andhra’ or ‘Scam Andhra’ and appealed to people to vote for him if they want ‘Swarna Andhra’ but, today he is colluding with a tainted party.”Questioning if it is wrong to demand Narendra Modi to fulfill promises he made, Naidu said, “He promised to build a capital better than Delhi, but he gave only Rs 1500 crores to Amaravati while Rs 2500 crores are given to build a statue (Sardar Patel statue in Gujarat).”Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokesh also hit-out at BJP and said that the party did injustice by denying Special Status to the state.”BJP can’t even win one Sarpanch seat. BJP is colluding with YS Jaganmohan Reddy, who goes to CBI court every Friday in connection with corruption cases,” said Nara Lokesh. The meeting was attended by thousands of people that was organised at Sri Venkateswara University Grounds.TDP has been staging protests against the Centre accusing it of injustice to Andhra Pradesh. On April 20, Naidu sacrificed his birthday celebrations and observed a day-long hunger strike – Dharma Porata Deeksha. The party has been organising cycle and bike rallies in constituencies across the state to create public awareness over the injustice that has been done to Andhra.

Updated: Apr 30, 2018, 09:50 PM IST<!–end of articllftpbx–>Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat today asked officials to conduct a survey of houses in both rural and urban areas of Uttarakhand which are still without toilets, saying states can contribute to the cleanliness campaign from their own financial resources. He was speaking during a review meeting of a committee set up to celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi in 2019.Rawat said a survey should be conducted of houses which still don’t have a toilet in rural and urban areas after the baseline survey and the Education Department should be asked to provide a list of schools which were without toilets and drinking water facilities. The chief minister reviewed workings of the committee ahead of a meeting to be held in this regard by Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the chief ministers in New Delhi on May 2, an official release here said. Noting that states can make their contribution to the cleanliness campaign out of their own financial resources and MNREGA, Rawat suggested that community toilets can also be built out of MLA funds. However, he claimed rural areas of Uttarakhand had become open defecation free whereas the urban areas were also close to achieving the objective.Pitching for long-term plans to improve drinking water facilities, sanitation and strengthening of panchayati raj institutions, he asked officials to make arrangements for rainwater harvesting on government buildings, schools and other important places.

All you need to know about Sameer Tiger, the Hizbul terrorist who was killed by the Indian Army

Sameer Ahmed Bhat, alias Sameer Tiger, the Hizbul Mujahideen’s main recruiter, was gunned down today in Pulwama district’s Drabgam, the village he called home, officials said.Bhat, who was also known as “Abbasi” and “Faisal”, met his end in the village after a six-hour gunbattle around 2.15 pm, they said. The morning began with security forces, acting on a tip-off that militants were holed up inside a house, cordoning the area.Around noon, security personnel, who were fighting stone pelting from the civilians, fired heavily at the house, causing an explosion, officials said.About an hour later, the first militant, identified as Aaquib Mushtaq, was killed.

Gujarat speaker Rajendra Trivedi calls Ambedkar, PM Modi ‘Brahmins’; faces flak

Gujarat Assembly Speaker Rajendra Trivedi has described Dalit icon B R Ambedkar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi as “Brahmins”, claiming that any learned person could be called so.Dalit leader and Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani and the Opposition Congress have slammed Trivedi for his remarks.”I have no hesitation in saying that Ambedkar was also a Brahmin because his surname, a Brahmin surname, was given to him by his teacher, who was a Brahmin.”There is nothing wrong in calling a learned person a Brahmin and in that context, I would say that even (Prime Minister) Modiji (an OBC) is a Brahmin,” Trivedi had said, addressing the “Mega Brahmin Business Summit” at Gandhinagar yesterday.Trivedi, a Brahmin, was elected as an MLA from Raopura in Vadodara district on a BJP ticket in last year’s Assembly polls. As his remarks triggered a controversy, Trivedi cited the Bhagavad Gita today and said he was against casteism and that his statements were taken out of context.”Lord Krishna has said in the Gita that caste should be based on the virtue one holds, not as per one’s birth. Thus, anyone can be called a Brahmin by virtue of his knowledge.”My speech was taken out of context. Otherwise, I am totally against casteism,” he said when contacted.Objecting to Trivedi’s remarks, Mevani said the speaker was not authorised to issue a caste certificate to Ambedkar, who had fought his entire life against casteism.”This statement of Trivedi shows his upper-casteist mindset. What authority does he have to issue a certificate to Ambedkar, who had struggled all his life to eradicate casteism?”Ambedkar had never wished to be a Brahmin. He actually wanted to see a society free of castes,” the Independent MLA, who was elected to the Assembly with the Congress’ support last year, said.”Since Trivedi was associated with the RSS, he would never understand the teachings of Ambedkar. I condemn his remarks,” Mevani added. The Congress slammed Trivedi for making “irresponsible” statements and said the ruling BJP and its leaders remembered Ambedkar only to get Dalit votes.”It is a serious matter when a person occupying such a high position makes such irresponsible statements for a great person like Ambedkar. The BJP and its leaders remember him only to get Dalit votes,” Gujarat Congress spokesperson Manish Doshi said.

Rahul Gandhi flight incident: Business jet operators’ body opposes politicisation, police action against crew

Business jet operators’ body BAOA has voiced concern over the police action against one of its members and cockpit crew for the technical snag reported in Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s aircraft last week. The Business Aircraft Operators Association (BAOA) in a statement issued today also said that any attempt to use such incidents for political purpose is totally uncalled for as it could “adversely affect” the safety of overall operations of the charter planes. On April 26, the plane carrying Gandhi and other passengers onboard from New Delhi to Hubli in north Karnataka developed a technical snag during landing, prompting the civil aviation ministry to direct aviation regulator DGCA to conduct a probe.”BAOA feels deeply concerned that in one of the recent incidents involving a chartered flight for a senior political leader operated by one of our members Ligare Aviation, an FIR was lodged with the police against the operator and the pilots for criminal negligence,” the statement said without naming the Congress president. As per initial reports, the aircraft developed a technical snag in mid-air and the pilots landed the aircraft safely as per the standard operating procedure (SOP), after duly assessing the situation, it added.Ligare Aviation in its report to the DGCA had attributed the incident to a snag in auto pilot mode, saying that the pilot shifted to the manual (mode) and landed (the aircraft) safely, a senior official had said last week. The association said all such incidents are mandatorily investigated by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), which is the only authorised agency to determine the causes for the incident and fix responsibility.”Any attempt to use such incidents for political purpose is totally uncalled for, as it would result in avoidable stress on pilots involved in such VIP flights and adversely affect the flight safety environment of general and business aviation industry.”We strongly urge all political parties to facilitate us maintain the highest level of flight safety standards in all charter flights,” it added.Alleging “intentional tampering” with aircraft, the Congress party had demanded a probe into the “suspicious and faulty performance” of the 10-seater Falcon 2000.The DGCA has already launched its probe into the incident, which is being investigated by a two-member committee.

India asks Nepal to probe blast at hydroelectricity project

India has asked Nepal to investigate the bomb blast at the office of a hydroelectricity project developed with the Indian assistance in the eastern part of the Himalayan nation. The compound wall of the 900 MW Arun III Hydroelectric Power Plant’s office in Tumlingtar area, nearly 500-km from here, was damaged in the explosion, weeks before its inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Indian embassy here has discussed the matter with the Nepal Foreign Affairs Ministry, an official at the embassy has said.Nepal’s Foreign Minister Pradeep Kumar Gyawali yesterday said they had asked the Home Ministry to investigate the matter. The explosion caused minor damaged to the office. However, no one was injured in the blast, officials said yesterday. An unidentified group was behind the explosion targeting Arun III office situated at Tumlingtar, they said.Following the incident, security has been stepped up in the area. The blast comes at a time when preparations were going on for laying foundation stone of the project by Modi during his official visit to Nepal on May 11.This is the second blast in a month targeting Indian properties in Nepal. On April 17, a pressure cooker bomb went off near the Indian Embassy field office in Biratnagar damaging the walls of the premises.Nepal is currently facing shortage of power and the production of hydropower from the project will mainly serve its domestic demands. The project is expected to bring in USD 1.5 billion foreign direct investment into Nepal and create jobs for thousands of people.

No coalition without hiccups, BJP-PDP will deliver on promises: Ram Madhav

No coalition is easy and there are bound to be ‘hiccups’, BJP general secretary Ram Madhav said today as he expressed confidence that his party and ally PDP would be able to deliver on the promises made to the people of Jammu and Kashmir. The BJP leader also asserted that there was no question of a lenient approach being adopted towards those trying to obstruct security forces during operations.During an interaction here, Madhav was asked by journalists about reports of a rift between J&K ruling alliance partners, PDP and BJP, over various issues.”All is not well between the two parties is something I have been hearing for the last three years. No coalition is easy, we are in coalition and working together to try to address the issues of the state. There will be hiccups but our party and our leaders are competent to handle those issues and we are confident that together we will be able to deliver on all those promises made in the common minimum programme or agenda of governance, Madhav said on a day eight new ministers took oath in J&K.Asked about PDP leader Mohammad Khalil Band’s comments seeking a dialogue between India and Pakistan, shortly after he took oath as a minister, Madhav said this is what the chief minister is saying”.”We have always maintained that there will be a view of the people but the decision on the issue (talks) will be taken by the Centre after taking a comprehensive overview of the situation. Let them have their views, he said.To a question suggesting that the BJP had surrendered before Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on key issues including amnesty to those involved in stone-pelting, Madhav said there could be no lenience towards those trying to obstruct the security forces. There will be no leniency towards those who try to obstruct security forces from performing in the valley. Nobody has surrendered We are acting very tough against all forms of terror whether it is on the streets, using stone-pelting as a means or in the forests using guns. We will tackle them in an appropriate manner, Madhav replied. He said terrorists with guns and stone-pelters could not be dealt with in the same way. With guns you have to deal with guns differently and stone pelters differently. As far as amnesty is concerned, the first time offenders were given amnesty by the state government in consultation with the home ministry. Otherwise, there is no question of any lenience with those who try or obstruct the duty of our security forces, he said.

‘You can’t go on making fool of the people’: SC raps Haryana govt for auctioning land

You cannot go on “making fool” of the people and blame them for everything just because you are in power. This was how the Supreme Court rapped the Haryana government for auctioning 558.53 hectares of land for mining purposes, though the available area was only 141.76 hectares.A bench comprising Justices Madan B Lokur and Deepak Gupta expressed displeasure over a public notice issued by the state was for auctioning of 558.53 hectares when only 141.76 hectares of land was available.Observing that the petitioner firm was entitled to a refund of the deposited amount, the top court directed the state to refund the money the firm along with 9% interest per annum from the date of deposit till the date of payment, keeping in view the “vast discrepancy” of area mentioned in the advertisement and area of land made available. The apex court noted in its order that the firm had refused to take possession of the area sought to be auctioned by the state in Karnal district. When the counsel for Haryana said it was the duty of the company to ascertain whether the land was actually 558.53 hectares, an annoyed bench said “it is very easy to blame the citizens for everything just because you are in power”.”The public notice was for 558.53 hectares. How can you give only 141.76 hectres and say it is the duty of applicant (firm) to verify this,” the bench told the counsel for the state.”You cannot go on making fool of the citizens like this. You are the state and it is your responsibility to ensure that what was advertised should be given,” the bench said.During the hearing, the counsel representing the state referred to a clause of terms and conditions of the auction and said it was the duty of the company to ascertain whether the land was actually 558.53 hectares or not.As per the clause, he said, “all prospective bidders are expected and presumed to have surveyed the areas to make their own assessment for the potential of the areas for which bids are to be offered. The state government shall not be responsible for any kind of loss to the bidders/ contractors at any point of time (before or after grant of contract).” “Further the bidders are also expected to have gone through the terms and conditions of auction notice and also the applicable acts and rules for undertaking mining,” the clause said. However, the bench observed that after going through the clause, it was “quite clear” that there was no requirement on the prospective bidder to survey the area for the purpose of measurement.”The prospective bidder can make an assessment for the potential of the area for which bids are to be offered,” it said, while setting aside the Punjab and Haryana High Court’s June 2016 order which had dismissed the plea filed by the firm in this regard. The company had approached the apex court challenging the high court order.

Rahul Gandhi who had torn ordinance meant to save Lalu is now hugging him: Amit Shah calls Cong Prez ‘hyprocrite’

BJP President Amit Shah on Monday attacked Congress President Rahul Gandhi for meeting tainted RJD Chief Lalu Prasad Yadav in AIIMS. Amit Shah also branded Rahul Gandhi for allegedly diluting his stance against corruption. This comes on a day when RJD supporters created ruckus inside AIIMS, forcing the hospital to file an FIR with the police. Lalu himself lost his cool in the railways station while he was being sent to Patna from New Delhi. Amit Shah on campaign trail in poll-bound Karnataka recalled the instance where Rahul Gandhi publicly rejected an ordinance which was to be brought by UPA2 government in 2013 meant to save convicted legislators from disqualification. Rahul Gandhi publicly trashed the proposed ordinance and said it was complete nonsense. After Rahul’s intervention, the ordinance was abandoned by UPA2 government. Many experts believed, government’s move at that time was to protect Lalu Prasad Yadav. Raking up that instance from 2013, Amit Shah said, ” During UPA, Rahul Gandhi had torn the ordinance which could save now fodder scam convict Lalu Yadav. As 2019 is approaching it seems Congress can’t win without Lalu ji’s support, and today he (Rahul Gandhi) met Lalu ji (in AIIMS)”. He further said, ‘ The same Rahul Gandhi has met and hugged Lalu ji today. Such hypocrites cannot run a non-corrupt government in a state”. Amit Shah was campaigning in Kolar, Karnataka. Congress president Rahul Gandhi met the RJD chief at the AIIMS and enquired about his health. Prasad had been admitted to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi on March 17 over complaints of uneasiness while he was lodged at the Birsa Munda Jail. He has been serving a jail term since December 23.Also readCongress president Rahul Gandhi meets RJD chief Lalu Yadav at AIIMS in DelhiOn March 29, he was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here for specialised treatment. A medical team, comprising six doctors, was set up to decide on the course of his treatment. Prasad, who was kept in a VIP room of the old private ward of the hospital, wrote to the director of AIIMS, saying that he should not be discharged from AIIMS, Delhi, and sent back to RIMS which does not have proper facilities required for his treatment.Citing various ailments such as heart problems, diabetes, kidney infection, high blood pressure, the RJD supremo, in his letter to the director, said doctors should not act under pressure from “certain individuals or political parties”. Urging the AIIMS director to allow him to continue his treatment at the institute till his recovery, Prasad said the AIIMS administration will be held responsible if something untoward happens to him after he is sent back to the hospital in Ranchi. His party MP Jai Prakash Narayan Yadav alleged that the AIIMS appeared to be acting under the pressure of central agencies like the CBI. “It seems there is a conspiracy to murder him. Why they are discharging him when he is not fit yet,” Yadav said. The former Bihar chief minister has been convicted in four fodder scam cases since 2013 — the latest being the Dumka treasury case, in which a special CBI court sentenced him to 14 years in jail. With PTI inputs

Rahul Gandhi doesn’t know how to take teertha, goes to temples because someone told him: Ananthkumar Hegde

Rahul Gandhi does “drama” and the Congress is a “drama company”, Union Minister Ananthkumar Hegde has said, attacking the Congress president over his frequent visits to places of worship during elections. The Minister of State for Skill Development said it is only now (during elections) that Rahul Gandhi has realised that a religion called “Hindu Dharma” exists.”Today, our Rahul Gandhi has remembered that there is also a Hindu dharma in our country and that’s the reason he has started visiting temples and mathas,” Hegde told a public rally in Belagavi district of poll-bound Karnataka yesterday.”That man does not even know how to take teertha (holy water given devotees at temples). Just because someone advised him, he goes to temples and mathas with Kaavi (saffron) clothes wearing Rudraksh malas (garlands)…to mosques donning (skull) cap with chicken feather, and churches wearing a cross. He wants to do drama, nothing else,” he said.Hegde has often landed in trouble for making controversial remarks and, at times, had to tender apology. The rabble-rousing Lok Sabha MP from Uttara Kannada recently spoke about changing the Constitution to remove the word “secular”. He apologised following an uproar. His earlier remarks linking Islam to terrorism had also set off a controversy. The minister said as long as there is Congress, there is no future for the country.”They are people who do drama. They don’t have honesty. They don’t know about visiting religious centres with devotion. They just want to go there because others go. This drama company should not be there in the country in the days to come,” he said.Hegde said the Congress only indulges in “looting the country and dishonouring religion”.

Karnataka polls: EC says 3-times higher cash, jewellery seizure this time

As Karnataka gears up for assembly polls, the value of cash and jewellery seizure by the Income Tax Department there has gone up three times to about Rs 25 crore in the state as compared to the last elections, the Election Commission (EC) said today. The EC said it has also been found that the “bulk of cash seized during operations in the present assembly elections has been meant for distribution.” During the last assembly polls in 2013, the tax department had seized Rs 4.97 crore of cash and jewellery worth Rs 3.41 crore during the “entire” campaign period, the EC said.”Total cash seizures (as part of the ongoing poll campaign) as on April 30 is Rs 19.69 crore and unexplained jewellery of Rs 4.81 crore has been made by the investigation wing of the Income Tax Department in Karnataka since the start of the assembly election-related surveillance,” the poll body said in a statement here. There is still over a week more of campaigning left for the May 12 single-phase polls in the state.”The probe wing of the ITD has been doing intensive surveillance and monitoring activities in the state. For the first time, teams with statutory powers and sufficient resources in terms of manpower, vehicles among others has been posted in each district of the state,” the EC said.It added that the tax sleuths, as part of this election-related drive, searched a candidate, on April 28-29, who is contesting the polls on a party ticket and he and his family have declared an income of Rs 18 crore post the raids. The tax department is now conducting valuation of Rs 191 crore worth properties of this candidate, whose identity was not disclosed. The action was taken against him, it said, based on “verification of his poll affidavit and some specific intelligence about cash transactions.” “It was found that the contesting candidate is a non-filer (of IT returns) since assessment year 2012-13 but had declared some income in his election affidavit.”He put a remark in the affidavit that online filing of IT return has been blocked by the ITD and hence he could not file his return and has paid self assessment tax,” it said. The EC said that the candidate’s contention that filing of e-ITRs was blocked is incorrect.”There are substantial discrepancies between income declared by his wife in her return of income filed, declared in affidavit and actually detected during the search,” it said. The Commission said the candidate “accepted” that five assets of his family members were not declared by him in the election affidavit. In an another instance, the EC said, raids were carried out against a person in state capital Banagalore who was “funding certain candidates of a particular party” and after 32 hours of sustained action, Rs 3.18 crore cash was seized, that included Rs 2 crore from a car parked near the person’s residence. As part of this action, unaccounted cash of Rs 4.01 crore and 6.5 kg jewellery were seized by the taxmen during searches conducted against three contractors in Bengaluru, Davangere and Mysore. The Income Tax Department has said that it has found evidence of inflation of purchases, payments to bogus sub contractors, inflated and fraudulent labour payments, and unaccounted cash payments during these searches in Karnataka. The counting of votes for the 224 elected seats in the Assembly is scheduled for May 15.

Mayawati questions ‘silence’ of PM Modi over caste mark on chest of MP police aspirants

BSP chief Mayawati today lashed out at the BJP claiming the incident in Madhya Pradesh’s Dhar district, where aspirants for the post of police constables reportedly had their caste categories written on bare chests, was just a fresh example of the saffron party’s new found love for Dalits.Mayawati also questioned the “silence” of top leaders including the prime minister on the issue.”This is the new and fresh example of BJP governments’ new found love for Dalits for their political gains,” Mayawati said in a statement released here referring to the Dhar incident. The BSP chief, in her statement, asked why top BJP leaders had not condemned the incident.Does it suit the BJP and company, and the prime minister himself, to remain silent, (and) not to condemn such a casteist incident, she asked.Mayawati demanded the officials responsible for the incident should be punished while the Centre needed to issue strict orders to check recurrence of such incidents anywhere in the country.Referring to the Dhar incident as a “criminal act”, Mayawati said it was because of the casteist and spiteful attitude towards the Dalits, Tribals and backwards that they were forced to convert as the Una case in Gujarat had shown. The BJP needs to realise that besides self-respect, Dalits are also vigilant towards their interests and will never fall into the trap of anyone’s allurements, she said. The Dhar incident had come to light when photographs in various newspapers showed aspirants with “SC” (Scheduled Caste), “ST” (Scheduled Tribe) and “G” (General) marked with sketch pens on their chests as they queued up for their medical examination. Those conducting the medical examination process had told police that the markings were made to differentiate candidates belonging to different categories as the physical requirements for each of these categories were different.

Global tender floated for shipping firms to revive sea route for Haj: Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi

The government has floated a global tender seeking applications from shipping firms as part of its efforts to revive an option of sending pilgrims for Haj by sea, Union Minority Affairs Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said today.Saudi Arabia had earlier given its nod to India’s plan to revive the option of sea travel to Jeddah, over two decades after the practice was stopped.”We have issued a global tender. We have asked for applications from shipping companies,” Naqvi told reporters here. The secretary and joint secretary from the ministry will soon hold talks in Saudi Arabia with officials from its shipping ministry and others on issues related to the travel of Haj pilgrims by sea, he said.Asked when the sea route would become operational for Haj pilgrims, he said, “We are trying and our goal is for 2019. It will only be from Mumbai.” Earlier this year, Naqvi had confirmed that Saudi Arabia had given its nod to India’s plan to revive the option of ferrying devotees by sea after he and Saudi Arabia’s Haj and Umrah Minister Mohammad Saleh bin Taher Benten signed a bilateral annual agreement regarding the pilgrimage in Mecca. He said today the journey via the sea route would take three or four days.Naqvi said for the first time after Independence, a record number of Muslims from India would go to Haj this year without any subsidy. The government has “succeeded in getting India’s Haj quota increased for the second consecutive year and now, for the first time after Independence, a record 1,75,025 pilgrims from India will go to Haj 2018″, Naqvi said. This year, a total of 1,28,702 pilgrims, about 47 per cent of them women, will travel through the Haj Committee of India. The rest will go through private tour operators, he said.A total of 1,308 Indian women will, for the first time, perform Haj without the company of a ‘mahram’ or male guardian, Naqvi said.Among the pilgrms are 6,700 who will fly from Ahmedabad, 350 from Aurangabad, 5,550 from Bengaluru, 254 from Bhopal, 11,700 from Cochin, 4,000 from Chennai, 19,000 from Delhi, 5,140 from Gaya and 450 from Goa.He said 2950 will leave from Guwahati, 7,600 from Hyderabad, 5,500 from Jaipur, 11,610 from Kolkata, 14,500 from Lucknow, 430 from Mangalore, 14,200 from Mumbai, 2,800 from Nagpur, 2,100 from Ranchi, 8,950 from Srinagar and 3,250 from Varanasi.Naqvi said for the first time, women Haj assistants would be deployed to help Indian women pilgrims and monitor facilities provided to them.In 2017, a total of Rs 1,030 crore was paid to airlines as airfare for 1,24,852 Haj pilgrims. In 2018, Rs 973 crore will be paid to the airlines for the 1,28,702 Haj pilgrims going through the Haj Committee of India, he said.”It means, apart from ending the Haj subsidy, we have saved Rs 57 crore on airfare,” he said. For the welfare of Haj pilgrims, two 40-bed hospitals in Mecca, one hospital of 15 beds in Medina, 10 branch dispensaries in Mecca, three dispensaries in Medina and one dispensary in the Jeddah Haj Terminal have been set up, he said. The Haj process has been made completely digital which has helped in making it “transparent and pro-pilgrim”, the minister said.

The West Bengal government has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to examine the allegations of processed meat being sourced from dumping grounds, a senior official said on Monday.Last week, the government had seized 20 tonnes of rotten meat, sourced from dumping grounds, meant to be supplied to eateries and departmental stores in the state as well as neighbouring Jharkhand, Odisha and Bihar. So far, 10 people, including a leader of a political outfit, have been arrested in connection with the case. Also readWest Bengal: Carcass meat exported to Bangladesh, Nepal; 6 accused sent to police custodyThe state enforcement branch has also started to investigate into the matter simultaneously.According to SP (Diamond Harbour) Koteshwar Rao, several teams have been deployed in greater Kolkata and outside West Bengal to trace the culprits involved in the business of selling meat of dead animals. Also readMen held for supplying meat of dead cow to Kolkata restaurants”We are conducting raids to get hold of the culprits involved in the incident. Discharged from AIIMS, Lalu loses cool; hospital lodges complaint as supporters create ruckus

The AIIMS today discharged RJD supremo Lalu Prasad, saying his condition has improved significantly, even as the former Bihar chief minister alleged a “political conspiracy” behind his discharge. He also lost cool while leaving the hospital. His workers created ruckus in the hospital leading to AIIMS authorities lodging a police complaint. Earlier, the Rashtriya Janata Dal president wrote to the institute’s director, asking him to continue his treatment at the facility till he recovers fully. Supporters of Prasad created ruckus in the hospital premises protesting the AIIMS’ decision, with his party alleging that there is a conspiracy to “murder” their leader by “forcing him out” of the premier hospital even though he continues to suffer from various ailments. During the ruckus, the supporters broke a glass door, abused the security guards and administration officials, hospital sources alleged.AIIMS have lodged police complaint against ‘unknown miscreants’ for misbehaving with staffers and ‘creating nuisance in the hospital area’. Also readLalu Yadav discharged from AIIMS-Delhi, to be shifted to Ranchi hospital In its complaint AIIMS authorities said, ” It is to inform you that on 30-04-2018 at around 12:15 afternoon, 8-10 unknown miscreants misbehaved with the AIIMS staff and created nuisance in the hospital area protesting against the discharge of Sh. Lalu Prasad Yadav, who has been under treatment at AIIMS and is being discharged today. They also damaged the glass door of Cath Lab from rear entrance gate side resulting in injury to security guard of AIIMS Sh. Khurshid Alam. With the intervention of Security Staff of AIIMS the safety of AIIMS staff was ensured and crowd dispersed. It is requested to lodge an FIR.” Lalu Prasad on her part lost cool with a policeman when he was escorted outside the hospital. Congress president Rahul Gandhi met Prasad at AIIMS today and enquired about his health. The RJD chief, who has been serving a jail term in connection with the fodder scam, was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here on March 29 for specialised treatment. The AIIMS, in an official statement today, said, “Lalu Prasad was referred from Ranchi Medical College to AIIMS for management of his acute medical condition . He has improved significantly and as per advise of the medical board constituted for his treatment, he is being referred back to Ranchi Medical College for management of his chronic issues. He is currently stable and is fit to travel.”The RJD chief had been admitted to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi on March 17 over complaints of uneasiness while he was lodged at the Birsa Munda Jail. Prasad has been serving a jail term since December 23.Prasad, who was kept in a VIP room of the old private ward of the hospital, has written to the director of AIIMS, saying that he should not be relieved from AIIMS, Delhi and sent back to RIMS since the latter lacks facilities for proper treatment of his ailments. Citing various ailments such as heart problems, diabetes, kidney infection, high blood pressure, the RJD supremo, in his letter to the director, said doctors should not act under pressure from certain individuals or political parties.Urging the AIIMS director to allow him to continue his treatment at the institute till his recovery, Prasad said the AIIMS administration will be held responsible if something untoward happens to him after he is sent back to the hospital in Ranchi. His party MP Jai Prakash Narayan Yadav alleged that the AIIMS appeared to be acting under the pressure of central agencies like the CBI.”It seems there is a conspiracy to murder him. Why they are discharging him when he is not fit yet,” Yadav said. The former Bihar chief minister has been convicted in four fodder scam cases since 2013 — the latest being the Dumka treasury case, in which a special CBI court sentenced him to 14 years in jail. This is the same ideology that would put a pot around Dalit’s neck, a broom around the body and would not allow them to enter the temple. We will defeat this ideology,” Rahul said in a tweet. An inquiry has been ordered after photos showed aspirants for the post of police constables had their caste categories written on their bare chests.Photographs in various newspapers showed aspirants with “SC” (Scheduled Caste), “ST” (Scheduled Tribe) and “G” (General) marked with sketch pens on candidates chests.Dhar Superintendent of Police Virendra Singh said that he had ordered an inquiry into the incident, to be conducted by a deputy SP rank officer.SC/ST candidates are given some exceptions with regard to height and health parameters required for constables. “It was done to avoid any misunderstanding while measuring the height of candidates belonging to reserved categories,” police officers said. District civil surgeon S Khare expressed his shock and promised to take action against the medical board.Union Minister Ramdas Athawale condemned the incident where the candidates for the post of Police Constable were labelled with their respective castes on their chest in Madhya Pradesh’s Dhar and termed it an insult to the SC/ST community.”Such an incident is an insult to SC/ ST. Appropriate action should be taken against officials responsible for it,” said Athawale.Athawale further said that he will write to Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan over the incident.

Newly sworn in J&K Dy CM Kavinder Gupta sparks row, says Kathua rape a ‘small case’

Within hours of being sworn-in as Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Kavinder Gupta on Monday sparked row by calling Kathua rape and murder a ‘small case’.The development comes amid a row over BJP promoting an MLA who reportedly attended the pro-rapist rally in Kathua.Gupta and seven others were sworn in as ministers in the state’s PDP-BJP government led by Mehbooba Mufti on Monday. Gupta is the new deputy chief minister in place of Nirmal Singh. When asked about the Kathua rape case, Kavinder said, “It is a small case…This type of incident should not happen. There are many challenges before the government.” The reshuffle is the result of two BJP ministers — Lal Singh and Chander Prakash Ganga — who took part in a rally in support of those accused in the rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl in Kathua, had to resign from the government earlier this month. However, defending his statement, Kavinder Gupta said, “Kathua issue is subjudice. Now, the Supreme Court will decide on the matter. I just said that there are many such incidents. There is no need to instigate the issue intentionally.” BJP General Secretary Ram Madhav has said that there was no link between Jammu and Kashmir Cabinet reshuffle and the Kathua rape case.Speaking to ANI, Madhav said that the decision was taken to give a chance to new faces. “The cabinet reshuffle has nothing to do with the Kathua incident. Our government has completed three years and we decided to give a chance to new faces,” Madhav said.Earlier in the day, Omar Abdullah took to Twitter and expressed his dismay over the promoting of Kathua MLA who had earlier attended the pro-rapist rally organised by Hindu Ekta Munch in Kathua.”2 BJP ministers removed in J&K for attending a pro-rapist rally & a MLA who is reported to have attended the same rally is promoted as a minister. Why are the BJP/ @MehboobaMufti confused about where they stand on the #Kathua rape,?” Omar said in a tweet.

PM Modi avoided critical issues during ‘casual’ China visit: Shiv Sena

The Shiv Sena today criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his just-concluded China visit, claiming it was a “casual” tour during which he avoided taking up crucial bilateral issues with President Xi Jinping in view of the next year’s general elections. The Uddhav Thackeray-led party claimed that Modi was trying to resolve pending issues with Beijing through “Panchsheel”, five principles of peaceful coexistence propounded by former prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru of whom he had been critical. The Sena sought to know what the RSS, the ideological mentor of Modi’s party the BJP, had to say about this stance. It said Modi had ‘chai pe charcha’ with the Chinese president during which he avoided discussing controversial issues in view of the general elections due next year.Issues related to Doklam, border incursions and the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), among others, were not taken up with the Chinese side, it said in an editorial in the party mouthpiece ‘Saamana’.”Pandit Nehru’s friendship with China had backfired. Modi has lever lost an opportunity to criticise Nehru. But it seems the current prime minister is trying to solve the issues with China through Nehru’s Panchsheel,” the Sena claimed.”Modi is backing Panchsheel but the thoughts behind it belonged to Nehru. Like Nehru, Modi is also convinced about ‘no to war, yes to peace’ (yuddha nako, buddha hawa) approach (to resolve pending issues),” it maintained. The Sena said the Ministry of External Affairs had maintained that Modi’s two-day visit to China last week was without any agenda.”It means the country’s prime minister has got no work and hence, he casually toured China,” the Marathi daily claimed. The publication said China continued to support Pakistan which had been sponsoring terrorism in India.”China is a major supporter of Pakistan. Pakistan can create troubles for India only because of the active support it gets from China.”The world has isolated Pakistan because of its soft- pedalling on terrorism. Still, China has continued to provide aid to Pakistan with an aim to destabilise India,” it said. The editorial also mentioned about Beijing’s growing footprints in India’s neighbourhood. The Sena said Nepal, once the world’s only Hindu nation, had been “almost taken over” by China and Kathmandu had started considering India as an adversary. The Communist giant was also trying to spread its influence”in India’s neighbouring countries such as the Maldives, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Myanmar, it said.”It has also augmented its forces near the border of Bhutan at Doklam (the site of a tense stand-off last year) and increased India’s headache, but none of these issues were discussed between the two countries,” the Sena said. The Doklam issue was not taken up to avoid any uncomfortable moment during the “informal summit” held in the central Chinese city of Wuhan, it said. The Sena said China has also undertaken construction near the border of Arunachal Pradesh. The site was used for incursion by Chinese soldiers into the north-eastern state, it said.”This issue was also not discussed between Modi and Xi,” rued the party. The CPEC passes through the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and the erstwhile Manmohan Singh government had opposed it.But such a serious issue was also not discussed during talks between the two leaders, it said.”The foreign secretary maintained both the leaders avoided discussion on any controversial issue. Then what did Modi do in China?” the BJP’s bickering ally asked. Both the leaders agreed that terrorism was a major threat to world peace, “although not a single word on Pakistan’s great work of nurturing terrorists was mentioned in the meeting,” the editorial said.”How can you hit out on terror without any reference to Pakistan?” it asked.”It seems Modi’s stand is to maintain peace across the border as general elections are just one year away. He does not want headache of unrest over the border during an election period,” the party said. The Sena is part of the BJP-led governments at the Centre and also in Maharashtra, but it often criticises their programmes and policies.

J&K: BJP MLA who attended pro-rapist rally in Kathua promoted as Cabinet Minister

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference working president Omar Abdullah on Monday hit out at BJP and Mehbooba Mufti for promoting the MLA who reportedly attended the pro-rapist rally in Kathua.Jammu and Kashmir Assembly speaker Kavinder Gupta and seven others were sworn in as ministers in the state’s PDP-BJP government led by Mehbooba Mufti.Gupta will be the new deputy chief minister in place of Nirmal Singh, who submitted his resignation last night, officials said. The new BJP faces sworn in as ministers were the party’s state unit chief Satpal Sharma and the MLAs from Kathua and adjoining Sambha, Rajiv Jasrotia and Devinder Kumar Manyal, respectively. Rajeev Jasrotia also evaded questions when asked by the news channel.Omar Abdullah took to Twitter and expressed his dismay over the promoting of Kathua MLA who had earlier attended the pro-rapist rally organised by Hindu Ekta Munch in Kathua.”2 BJP ministers removed in J&K for attending a pro-rapist rally & a MLA who is reported to have attended the same rally is promoted as a minister. BJP protects rapists and promotes rape apologists. Shame,” she said.

RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav was on Monday discharged from Delhi’s AIIMS despite a strong objection from the former Bihar Chief Minister. Lalu alleged a conspiracy as he was released from the hospital.”This is unjust, it is a conspiracy to deteriorate Lalu Yadav’s health. I am being shifted to a place where there are no facilities. It is a tough time, but I will face it,” the RJD chief said. He will be shifted to Ranchi hospital. Earlier, he had written a letter to AIIMs director saying the hospital is not properly equipped to treat his ailments.AIIMS in a statement said that Lalu was being referred back to Ranchi Medical College as his condition had improved significantly.”Lalu Prasad Yadav was referred to AIIMS for management of his acute medical condition. He has improved significantly and is being referred back to Ranchi Medical College for management of his chronic issues,” it said. Lalu, who is serving a jail term in connection with the fodder scam, was admitted to AIIMS last month for treatment of various ailments related to heart and kidney. He was referred to AIIMS by the Rajendra Institute of Medical Science (RIMS) in Ranchi. The RJD chief had been admitted to RIMS in Ranchi on March 17 over complaints of uneasiness while he was lodged at the Birsa Munda Jail in Ranchi. Lalu has been serving a jail term since December 23. Lalu’s son and former Bihar deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav, who had met his father in the hospital last week, said the decision has been taken in haste.”The decision to shift Laluji from AIIMS to Ranchi Hospital has been taken in haste. AIIMS is much better and I wonder why this decision has been taken. Only AIIMS authorities can reveal the reason behind the sudden transfer of Laluji,” he said. In Rajasthan’s Bhilwara, Dalit groom brutally beaten up in his baraat, forced to get down from horse

A Dalit man was allegedly beaten up and forced off a horse by a group of villagers during his wedding procession in Rajasthan’s Bhilwara district. The incident took place in Bhilwara’s Govardhanpura village on Sunday.People in the village stopped the groom after he left his house on a horse along with his family members. The police tried to stop the people but the groom was forced to get down from the horse and go back to his house.A case has been registered under SC/ST Act and seven people have been arrested so far in this regard. This incident brings back the memory of Kasganj, where a Dalit groom was asked to take a longer route to ‘avoid’ Thakur areas. However, an agreement was reached by both communities and Thakurs agreed to allow passage of wedding procession the Dalit groom in Nizampur village.According to Zee Media Bureau, senior administrative officials of Kasganj such as the DM and the SP helped both the sides to reach to an amicable resolution during a late night meeting. In fact, Sanjay Jatav, the Dalit, had moved the Allahabad High Court for the passage of baraat from a particular area. However, the court had dismissed the plea. The case hit the headlines after the Kasganj authorities gave Jatav and longer route chart for his baraat on April 20 to avoid the upper caste areas. The bridegroom’s family had opposed to the village community’s decision that the marriage should take place at an open ground about 80 metres from the girl’s home, saying it would not give ample opportunity and space for wedding revelry, which include horse-riding rituals.Jatav had earlier said that he would take out the marriage procession from the perimeter of the village up to the girl’s residence, while passing by the houses of the upper caste community.
