Hours after she was granted bail by the Supreme Court in connection with the Delhi excise policy case, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader K Kavitha on Tuesday evening walked out of Tihar Jail.
BRS workers and supporters who had gathered outside the jail to welcome her played drums and burst crackers as she stepped out of the prison complex. Kavitha’s brother and BRS working president K T Rama Rao was also present.
Kavitha (46) was released from Tihar’s jail number 6 where she was lodged for nearly five months.
Earlier today, a bench of justices BR Gavai and KV Viswanathan directed to release K Kavitha immediately. The top court also imposed various conditions against Kavitha including not to tamper with evidence or influence witnesses in the matter.
The top court also directed her to furnish a bail bond of Rs 10 lakh each in both CBI and ED cases and asked her to surrender her passport.
Speaking to ANI news agency after her release, Kavitha said, “All I have to say is that law will prevail, law will take its course. The whole country knows this was a faulty case…”
She later met her party leaders and workers at the party office in Delhi’s Vasant Vihar.
The top court noted that Kavitha is behind bars for five months and the trial will take a long time to complete as there are 493 witnesses and many documents.
The apex court noted that the reliance is on the statements of co-accused who have been granted pardon and made an approver.
The Enforcement Directorate had arrested Kavitha from her Banjara Hills residence in Hyderabad on March 15 and the CBI had arrested her from Tihar jail on April 11.
