Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Sunday slammed the Centre over the suggestion that passports may no longer be a valid address proof document.”Treating India’s migrant workers like second class citizens is completely unacceptable. This action demonstrates BJP’s discriminatory mindset,” the Congress President said on Twitter.Earlier, it was reported that the government is mulling over removing the last page which includes the address of the passport holder. The government had also proposed orange cover passports for Indians. Currently, barring diplomatic and official passports, all Indian passports have blue cover.”As the last page of the passport would not be printed now, passport holders with ECR status would be issued a passport with orange colour passport jacket and those with non-ECR status would continue to get a blue passport,” foreign ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar had said on Friday.ECR or “Emigration Check Required” category is for applicants who haven’t finished school and are travelling abroad for work to a group of 18 countries, most of them in Gulf. They have to get an ‘Emigration clearance’ certificate from the office of Protector of Emigrants before leaving India. Also readYour passports may not serve as a valid address proof anymoreThe External affairs ministry is currently considering the proposal and might take an official call on it soon. “The last page is never checked anywhere, but the personal identity of a traveller is important. Names of the mother or the father or the spouse is not required. The decision has been taken after the government mulled over it for sometime. We may take all details for our records but will not print on the passport,” Neelam Rani, Regional Passport Officer told DNA. Media reports also claimed that the ministry is also considering to change the colours of the passports. Currently, passports are being issued in three colours, white for government officers; red for diplomats; and blue for all others across two categories — those who require emigration check (ECR) and those who do not (ECNR).
