<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>Buoyed by the success of the two feeder routes it started in south Mumbai to ferry commuters to and from Churchgate and CSMT, the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport has initiated three more, one each in the central, eastern and western suburbs. The three routes, which became operational earlier this month, will benefit commuters in Wadala, Ghatkopar and Kandivili.Sources from the undertaking said that they started running the new new bus routes after noticing there was a growing demand from the passengers. The route numbers are: 110 for the Wadala-Sangam Nagar-Barni Naka-Wadala; 406 for Ramabai Nagar-Ghatkopar station; and 279 for Kandivili-Poisar depot-Kandivili stretches. “We started these feeder routes earlier this month after we got a good response on the first two routes,” said H Gophane, spokesperson for BEST.The feeder buses, smaller in size than the average buses, will directly compete with auto rickshaws and taxis ferrying passengers on a sharing basis in the respective areas. “The BEST want to compete with share-autos and share-taxis, so they are keeping the fares to a minimum of Rs 8,” a BEST official said. The BEST launched the feeder buses on Churchgate-Nariman Point and Churchgate-CSMT-Crawford market routes earlier in June. These buses ply on route numbers 99 (Churchgate-Nariman Point) and 113 (Churchgate-CSMT-Crawford Market). Sources said that they have seen reverse migration of commuters from taxis to buses, and on an average, at least 2,000-plus commuters are using each of these routes every day. The frequency on the feeder routes would be every 10-15 minutes. Since each bus is capable of carrying the number of passengers that would otherwise be accommodated by eight to ten taxis, they will help cut down congestion, pollution as well fuel consumption, BEST officials said.
