Congress has retained both the seats in Madhya Pradesh where where by-elections were held last week.In Kolaras constituency, Congress candidate Mahendra Singh Yadav maintained his lead, established in the first round. He was ahead by 4,300 votes after the end of the 14th round of counting. Finally after 23 rounds of counting he won by a margin of 8000 votes. Opposition Congress today retained the Mungaoli Assembly seat in a by-poll in Madhya Pradesh, with its candidate Brajendra Singh Yadav beating his BJP rival by a margin of 2,124 votes, a poll official saidBrajendra Singh Yadav got 70,808 votes while the BJP candidate, Baisahab Yadav, bagged 68,684, the official said. Counting of votes began in the morning with the BJP leading in the first round. However, the Congress candidate surged ahead from second round onwards and maintained the lead till the seventh round. Baisahab Yadav again caught up and left his opponent behind between the 12 to 15th rounds. In the last round, the Congress managed to gain a lead again, retaining the seat. Notably, the Congress had won the seat by a margin of 20,765 votes in the previous election.Jyotiraditya Scindia hailed the win as victory of truth and development. He alleged that in last 15 years, BJP leaders didn’t visit Mungaoli but Shivraj Singh Chouhan and his cabinet camped there during the elections. The by-polls were necessitated due to the death of Congress MLAs Mahendra Singh Kalukheda (Mungaoli in Ashoknagar district) and Ram Singh Yadav (Kolaras in Shivpuri district). A total of 13 candidates are in the fray in Mungaoli while 22 candidates are contesting in Kolaras. The BJP has fielded Baisahab Yadav from Mungaoli and Devendra Jain from Kolaras. Both the parties gave their all to win the seats. Considering both were Congress held, BJP wouldn’t be too disheartened with this loss. However, Congress will definitely take it as a sign that the party is in ascendancy in the poll-bound state. BJP has been in power for a long time in Madhya Pradesh, and there are some indications that anti-incumbency may be setting in. With PTI inputs
