The state government has decided to appoint a welfare board for unorganised workers statewide while an independent advisory board will also be appointed for newspaper vendors. The decision was taken in a recent meeting between a delegation of Maharashtra State Newspaper Vendors Association and Labour Minister Sambhajirao Nilangekar-Patil.In the meeting, general secretary of Vendors Association, Balaji Pawar laid before the labour minister the problems faced by newspapers vendors conducting their business on a daily basis.The draft of the welfare board is ready and the final policy will be implemented soon. The registration of the beneficiaries will begin from April 2018.Some of the issues raised by the newspaper vendors association were that there are no safe locations for the distribution of newspapers in the city, difficulties in paper delivery during rains. They also demanded for a state-level policy for newspaper distribution centres.It was also discussed that apart from the BMC, other municipal corporations should also allot places for newspaper vendors to put their stalls and that they should be provided protection against encroachment.ISSUES RAISEDSome of the issues raised by the newspaper vendors association were that there are no safe locations for the distribution of newspapers in the city, difficulties in paper delivery during rains.
