A major fire that broke out in a multi-storey building in Mumbai’s Worli which houses the residence and office of Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone was contained on Wednesday late evening.Over 100 people were safely evacuated from the building and no one was reported injured in the fire that started around 1:40 pm.The firefighters managed to douse the fire encountering intense heat, smoke and wind at the upper level.”Level – III fire in Beaumonde (Beau Monde) Towers at Appasaheb Marathe Marg in Worli’s Prabhadevi locality is contained. There is intense heat and fire in some pockets, but it is contained,” said Fire Brigade official.At least 10 fire engines, two quick response vans, five water tankers were put in service to douse the fire.Initially, there were reports that two firefighters lost their lives while dousing a fire. However, the officials denied any such incident.Fire Officer (Controls), Sanjay Manjrekar said, “Two firemen were taken to KEM hospital due to an excessive smoke intake and their condition is stable.”Deepika Padukone who has a residence in one floor of the building was not inside the 34-storey building in Prabhadevi area. Padukone took to Twitter to confirm that she is safe and thanked everyone for their concern.”I am safe.Thank You everyone. Let us pray for our firefighters who are at site risking their lives,” she Tweeted.According to Surendra Malwankar, who lives on the fifth floor of the building, no one was living on the top floor. “They live abroad most of the time,” he said. However, the Shiv Sena corporator Kishori Pednekar alleged that the building’s security guards tried to douse the fire before informing the ‘fire and police promptly, due to which fire raged.(With inputs from Devashree Bhujbal and Ashutosh )
