A massive Rs 44,668 crore worth of projects have been proposed to improve and expand Mumbai’s suburban rail corridor. This however does not include the Rs 19,500 crore Bandra-Virar elevated rail corridor which has been replaced by other multi-crore projects. DNA had reported about the possibility of such a move on January 12.At a meeting chaired at Sahyadri Guest House by Union Railway minister Piyush Goyal and Railway’s top bureaucrat Ashwani Lohani with those representing Western Railway, Central Railway and Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC), a new feature called Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP)-3A was added for implementing these projects. This will be an extension of MUTP-3 which has been sanctioned in the Railway Budget. The MUTP-3A will include expansion of existing rail lines, introducing new rail corridors, procuring 210 AC locals and arrangements for their parking, station redevelopment and improving signalling system using Communication Based Train Control (CBTC) which will reduce the gap between two services. According to sources, by the time these projects will be complete the overall project cost is expected to touch Rs 49,524 crore. The planning body of MRVC, which will implement MUTP-3A has given maximum priority to procuring 210 AC trains at a cost of Rs 16,380 crore. They will be setting up maintenance facilities for its AC rolling stock at a cost of Rs 2,050 crore. Apart from this the elevated fast corridor on Harbour line is expected to cost Rs 12,331 crore by the time the work is complete. The Indian Railways are also developing Mumbai Metropolitan Region with projects like new suburban rail corridor connecting the 60-km long Panvel-Virar, expanding rail lines with a third line on Kalyan-Asangaon and third and fourth lines on Kalyan-Badlapur route.Sources said that they are trying to get a sanction in this year’s General Budget though the Railway Board has asked to take time and study it further.MUTP-3AIt will include expansion of existing rail lines, introducing new rail corridors, procuring 210 AC locals, station redevelopment and improving signalling system using Communication Based Train Control (CBTC) which will reduce the gap between two services.
