On 52nd anniversary, Shiv Sena reiterates claims of winning Maharashtra polls next year on its own

Shiv Sena on its 52nd anniversary tore into Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government. Accusing its alliance partner of doing injustice with the nation at various fronts, the Uddhav Thackrey helmed party, in its mouthpiece Saamna made clear that it would opt out of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).Shiv Sena, in its editorial expressed confidence and said that it will win the next Maharashtra Assembly Elections on its own and will play a role of kingmaker in the 2019 general elections. “Shiv Sena’s journey has never been easy. Even today there are many obstacles in our path. However, despite all the hindrances we are confident of winning the next Maharashtra Assembly Elections solo. We also are sure of the fact that we will play a major role in the upcoming general elections,” the Saamna editorial read.At a time when the BJP is desperately trying to woo Sena for an alliance, the latter has not been responsive. The editorial also cornered the Centre over Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 which seeks to give illegal migrants from ‘minority communities in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan’ — Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsi and Christians an easy and short path to Indian citizenship.”The culture and the identity of Assam are in danger. The Centre is trying to bring in foreign elements in the state, this way the people of the state will have to compromise on their rights”, the editorial added. It further slammed the intentions of private developers ‘renaming’ areas in Mumbai. The Sena chief in the past has objected to alleged change of names of places like Worli and Malabar Hills in Mumbai. The Sena in a sardonic attack said that like Delhi, a virtual dust storm is making lives miserable across the nation but Prime Minister Modi remains unfazed. “Only Delhi is not witnessing a dust storm. The entire nation is experiencing one but Prime Minister Narendra Modi cannot see it as he is never in the country,” the editorial said. “Is there an emergency in the nation? Such questions are arising. Our soldiers are being killed but the Centre remains unfazed,”it added. The editorial also reviewed party’s 52-year-long journey and highlighted the milestones achieved along the way, while underlining the party?s contribution to the state and the country.

Appointing next CJI: When the name comes us, will discuss it, don’t question our intention, says RS Prasad

The government’s intention on the appointment of the next Chief Justice of India (CJI) should not be questioned, Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said on Monday, noting that when the incumbent names the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court as his successor as per convention, the executive will take a call.He was responding to a question on whether the government will follow the laid-down conventions and procedures to appoint Justice Ranjan Gogoi as the next Chief Justice when incumbent Dipak Misra demits office on October 2. “The question is imaginary…as far as the appointment of the Chief Justice of India is concerned, the convention is clear…the sitting chief justice names the senior-most judge (of the top court) as his successor. When the name comes to us, we will discuss it,” he told a press conference held to highlight the achievements of the Law Ministry in the past four years. He also said that no one had the “right to question our intention”.Speculations surrounding Justice Gogoi’s appointment as the next CJI emerged following the unprecedented press conference of four most-senior judges in January this year when they had criticised Justice Misra over various issues, especially the manner of allocation of cases to certain benches. Justices J Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi, Madan B Lokur and Kurian Joseph addressed the unprecedented press conference, perhaps a first in the history of Indian judiciary. According to the memorandum of procedure, a document which guides the appointment and transfer of judges of the apex court and the 24 high courts, “Appointment to the office of the Chief Justice of India should be of the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court considered fit to hold the office.” Days before the CJI’s retirement, the law minister seeks his recommendation for the appointment of his successor. Also readSupreme Court showing tilt towards idealism: Justice Ranjan Gogoi”Whenever there is any doubt about the fitness of the senior-most Judge to hold the office of the Chief Justice of India, consultation with other Judges…would be made for the appointment of the next Chief Justice of India,” the document states. Responding to another question on the delay in finalising the memorandum of procedure for appointment of judges, Prasad said discussions were on and the Supreme Court and the government would have to finalise the document together. “Our view (on the MoP) is that the norms of those selected (as judges) have to be mentioned (in the document),” he said. After the Supreme Court struck down a law through which the government had sought more say in the appointment of judges, the top court and the government have been trying to iron out differences on the MoP.He said those claiming hat the government was not appointing judges should remember that “numbers speak for itself”.Also readJustice Ranjan Gogoi and Jasti Chelameswar miss law journal launchThe Law Minister pointed out that apart from the stay on judges’ appointment in 2014 and 2015 due to the NJAC Act issue, the Centre has appointed 126 judges in 2016 and 117 judges in 2017, and that the appointment of more judges is in the pipeline. “We will surpass our own record of appointing 126 judges in 2016 when this year comes to an end,” he said.

Press 5 for dividing the country: Chetan Bhagat blasts Twitter user who demanded Hindu service executive from Airtel

On Monday, Airtel caused major outrage on Twitter and not just for its shoddy coverage. A customer care message by Airtel’s social media team caused online fury for not standing up to bigotry. It all started when one Pooja Singh, who describes herself as a management professional on the micro-blogging site Twitter, started ranting about Airtel’s DTH service. In her angry tweet she wrote: ‘I raised complaint for reinstallation of DHT.but assigned service engineer miss behaved with me. His words are “Tum Phone Rakho Dobara call mt krna ” his number is+91 79-85195094. This is how Airtel is looting it’s customer (sic).’Soon, the Airtel’s social media team replied with standard message. ‘Hey, I most definitely appreciate you reaching out here! We’ll take a closer look into that & get back shortly with more information. Thank you, Shoaib.’This led to Pooja demanding a different executive writing: “Dear Shohaib, as you’re a Muslim and I have no faith in your working ethics because Kuran may have different version for customer service, thus requesting you to assign a Hindu representative for my request. Thanks.”This saw another message by a ‘Gaganjot’ who wrote: “To Twitter’s surprise, Airtel’s team did reply to this brazen message. ‘Hi Pooja! As discussed, please let me know what days & time frames work best for you so we can talk. Further, please share an alternate number so that I can assist you further with this. Thank you, Gaganjot.’This led to a host of angry tweets with many promising to switch service providers including former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. Abdullah wrote: “‘Dear @Airtel_Presence this conversation is genuine (I’ve seen the timeline myself). I refuse to pay another penny to a company that condones such blatant bigotry. I’m beginning the process of porting my number to another service provider & canceling my DTH & Broadband.”Now Chetan Bhagat, the popular author joined into the debate mocking a future where service executives would be based on the customer’s religion, caste, regional affiliations. He wrote on Twitter: “Dear sick in the head ma’am. You have reached Airtel customer service. For Hindu press 1.. for upper caste press 2… for North Indian press 3.. for specific North state press 4..press 5 for dividing and destroying the country even further. Or. Get lost. Bye. Bullets fired at BJP MLA Nand Kishore Gurjar’s car in Sahibabad

Just the night before the visit of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to the Ghaziabad district, few unidentified persons on a bike fired bullets at the car of Bhartiya Janata Party MLA of the Loni area in Sahibabad on Sunday night.According to the police, the BJP MLA Nand Kishore Gurjar, whose security was removed in May, was returning from a meeting at Mawana. He was on his way to his native place at the Ganauli village around 10:30 pm along with his driver and two personal security guards.”As soon as the car crossed the Hindon river bridge, they heard sounds of 3 to 4 gunshots from behind. One of the gunshots hit the side mirror and damaged it. The personal security guard seated behind fired two shots in the direction of the initial firing,” said Vaibhav Krishna, Senior Superintendent of Police, Ghaziabad. After which, they sped the car to nearest Farrukhnagar police post to save their lives, while all of them reached unhurt as only a side mirror was hit in the incident, the police said.Gurjar has been getting continuous life threats lately.Following the incident, a first information report was registered at Sahibabad police station and further investigating is going on.”We will be checking the CCTV footages of the nearby area and teams have been formed to nab the criminals,” said Krishna.

No landfill site near 2 km of human habitation: CM Yogi Adityanath

The protesters who have been agitating against the construction of the landfill in Sector 123 met Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in Ghaziabad on Monday. They apprised him about the situation and sought his help. The chief minister, upon hearing about the situation said that any landfill site should be at a distance of 2 km from the area of human habitation. It is a stipulation mandated by the Solid Waste Management Rules of 2016.According to the rules, a landfill site should be situated at a distance of 100 metres from a riverbed, and 200 metres from water bodies, highways, habitations, public parks and water supply wells.Sukheer Pehlawan, president of the Kooda Ghar Virodh Sangharsh Samiti, said that “We met with the chief minister during his visit to Ghaziabad and informed him about the long-term ill-effects that the landfill in Sector 123 will have on the residents and especially the future generation. It has been affecting lakhs of residents in the area by causing air pollution and groundwater contamination.”Yogi Adityanath has ordered the officials to conduct a meeting with the residents on Tuesday. Union Minister and local MP Mahesh Sharma and MLA Pankaj Singh are also expected to be present at the meeting. When the National Green Tribunal (NGT) issued an interim order on May 29 directing the authorities to stop the dumping of waste in the forest located at Sector 54, the authorities decided to build a landfill site in Sector 123.This decision has caused a huge furore and the residents from sectors 117-122 along with some villagers started protesting against the Noida Authority against the construction of the landfill and the waste-to-energy site. However, the Noida Authority has already started dumping the waste there. As per the Master Plan 2031 of Noida, a recreational green area is proposed at the site where the authority is constructing a dump yard and the residents thus state that they will not let the authorities violate the rules.According to the district magistrate, BN Singh, the law and order is their primary concern. He stated that if the residents have an issue, they should move to either the NGT or the court but should not intervene in the work of a statutory body. Yet the document shown by the residents states clearly that they can complain to the authority if they feel that the site is not suitable. However, the administration claims that the NGT rules can be changed accordingly and they are working on the orders given to them. Now the residents are also considering approaching the high court and the NGT.

Facing imminent arrest, RCA treasurer Pinkesh Jain goes underground

The lines between cricket and politics have been blurred in Rajasthan. With IPL once again back to the state, it was being hoped that action would stay contained to the cricket field. But the suspension of Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA) treasurer Pinkesh Jain has once again set in motion events that could snowball into a major political controversy with potential to harm ruling BJP.An FIR has been lodged against Azad Singh Rathore and others for irregularities in running of Barmer Club, a club for cricket activities. This was immediately after Azad Singh reached Barmer to a rousing welcome on being elevated to post of RCA treasurer. With a possibility of an imminent arrest, Azad has gone underground and has taken to social media to challenge the action against him.Azad’s post on social media too tries to invoke the valour and support of Rajput community “I have the blood of Raval Mallinath in my veins. I follow the Rajput tradition. I will not bow down to you,” he writes.Action against Azad is also being portrayed as chief minister Vasundhara Raje’s ongoing tussle with Rajput community. Coming at a time when speculations are rife about Raje’s opposition preventing Gajendra Singh Shekhawat being elevated to post of BJP state chief. With Rajput community in Western Rajasthan making preparations to organise large scale functions on the death anniversary of slain gangster Anand Pal Singh on June 24; the logic is finding easy buyers. But BJP faction is not willing to accept any involvement, “These are local actions taken at local level. Any insinuation to otherwise is incorrect,” said BJP spokesperson Anand Sharma.

Congress passes a resolution appealing BJP, AAP to end deadlock

Continuing his attack on Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) Chief Ajay Maken slammed the “air-conditioned dharna politics” of the Kejriwal government and the BJP leaders at a time when the national Capital is facing acute water and power shortage, severe air pollution and sanitation crises among other crumbling civic problems.”Kejriwal is trying to find an escape route from his non-performance in the last three-and-a-half years,” Maken said in a meeting with other senior leaders of the Congress. The Congressmen also passed a four-page resolution appealing to both the ruling parties at the Centre and Delhi to resolve the impasse at the earliest. “Delhi has already suffered enough in the last four years,” added Maken. Former Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, who could not attend the meeting due to indisposition, had also extended her support for the resolution. “We would also like to address the four chief ministers who extended their support to Kejriwal. We reiterate that the Constitutional framework of Delhi cannot be a reason for non-performance by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government,” read an extract from the resolution.Hinting a collusion between the two parties, the resolution also highlighted 11 sub-points which discussed several instances where AAP backed BJP ranging from the 2011 anti-corruption movement to AAP not extending its support to Congress to impeach the Chief Justice of India in 2018. “The Congress Party also takes strong exception to the conduct of the BJP in Delhi. It is utterly shocking that the elected leaders of the BJP are answering Kejriwal’s drama politics with their own theatre performance,”read another extract from the resolution. Maken said, “How can LG and BJP allow Kejriwal to protest at Raj Niwas and how can BJP leaders protest at CM’s office without his (Kejriwal’s) permission? (sic)”It seemed that the 11 sub-points were listed in response to speculation of a third front. In his response to the support by four CMs, Maken said, “AAP cannot be trusted. The resolution also discusses how AAP and BJP are working together.”

Yet who could have imagined that this gentle soul would become a target. Why? AAP vs LG: After Satyendar Jain, fasting Manish Sisodia rushed to hospital

After Satyendar Jain, Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia has been now rushed to hospital due to his deteorating physical condition. On 6th day of the indefinite strike, Sisodia’s ketone level reached 7.4. Yesterday it was 6.4. The acceptable level is +2.0. Hence after consultation with doctors, he has been sent to the hospital. Like Satyendar Jain, he too has been taken to LNJP hospital. This comes at a time, when the Delhi HC slammed AAP govt for protesting inside the LG’s house. Kejriwal and his top ministers are fasting at LG Baijal’s residence, asking for intervention to stop ‘strike’ by IAS officers. However, the IAS officers have denied all allegations and have said that they are not at strike. The condition of Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain, who was hospitalised late last night, is stable, a senior doctor today said.Jain, who had been on an indefinite hunger strike at the Lieutenant Governor office for nearly a week, was rushed to the LNJP Hospital after his health deteriorated. His Ketones level in urine was found high yesterday. Also readAAPvsLG: Fasting Satyendar Jain admitted to hospital, condition stable “After hospitaliztion, his condition is stable,” Medical Suprientenden of LNJP, J C Passey, said. Last night, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal confirmed that his colleague has been hospitalised. “Satyender Jain shifted to hospital due to his deteriorating health (sic),” he tweeted.Jain had gone on strike on Tuesday, and his sugar level had further dipped on Saturday, even as he asserted that the AAP government will continue to fight for people of the city. In a tweet, the minister had shared a copy of his health summary, which said, the ketone level in urine had increased to a “large amount”. “My reports. Ketones are increasing and blood sugar is constantly low. Lost 3.7 kg wt in 4 days. We will continue fighting for ppl of Delhi (sic),” he had tweeted.

Those urging non-cooperation will destroy foundation of Republic: JD(U) leader Pavan Varma backs Kejriwal

Even though the Congress party has defended its decision to not join other opposition parties, support for Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal over his standoff with LG Anil Baijal is growing with several political leaders slamming Narendra Modi led government at Centre. After Shiv Sena, now JD(U) too have weighed in on the exisiting crisis and have supported Kejriwal. Delhi Chief Minister Kejriwal, accompanied by his top ministers, have stayed put at the Lieutenant Governor’s office since last week’s Monday, demanding that Baijal should direct the IAS officers to end their “strike”. Since the alleged assault on Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash by some AAP MLAs at the chief minister’s residence on the intervening night of February 19-20, the officers have been demanding that Kejriwal should “make them feel safe” and take steps to ensure their safety while attending meetings with ministers. On Monday, JD(U) national spokesperson Pavan Varma gave his support towards AAP government in Delhi and indirectly cautioned ruling BJP in the centre. Also readAAPvsLG: Fasting Satyendar Jain admitted to hospital, condition stable Pavan Varma said on Twitter, ” While condemning the alleged misbehaviour against the CS, now that the CM’s has assured IAS officers regarding their safety, and appealed to them to resume their mandated duties, they must do so immediately, for the people of Delhi”. In a veiled jibe at BJP, Varma said, ” Those urging officers to non-cooperate against the elected government of the day, may reap immediate political benefit, but will destroy the very foundations of our Republic in the long run. What can happen against one elected govt can happen against another too”.Varma in the past has made clean break from JD(U)’s official position to criticise BJP on several occassions. So it is unclear, whether Varma was echoing the party line on Twitter. However, it is certain, Varma adds to the growing clamour of leaders who has supported the Delhi CM in this stand-off with IAS officers. Expressing solidarity with the AAP, CPI(M) supremo Yechury on Sunday joined the march at Mandi House. “Joining the protest rally to the Prime Minister’s residence today to express serious condemnation over the manner in which federalism, a fundamental feature of our Constitution, is being undermined by this BJP Central government,” he said. BJP ally ShivSena chief Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday spoke to Kejriwal and discussed the current situation.DMK working President MK Stalin also expressed his solidarity in a tweet. “I am concerned with the disdain shown by Lt. Gov. of Delhi towards an elected Chief Minister like @ArvindKejriwal. The BJP is proactively destroying the federal structure of this nation,” he tweeted. Actor-politician Shatrughan Sinha who earlier declared support for Kejriwal also issued a strong takedown in a series of tweets.”Heavens wouldn’t have fallen if you had allowed CMs of West Bengal, Kerala, Karnataka & AP to meet our popular & favorite CM Arvind Kejriwal. It’s high time to realize that they are elected (& not selected) CMs by our people of India. This kind of blatant show of autocracy, despotism, autarchy & use of power by stopping the meet of elected CMs of states will only ridicule our party’s image & give them tremendous sympathy of their followers. Just think of it & take it as “Food for Thought” – consider the genuine demand by Arvind Kejriwal,” read the tweets.”The yours, theirs & ours demand of “Full statehood for Delhi” must be fulfilled in the larger interest of people of Delhi & Nation, sooner the better, before the deterioration of health of leaders (sitting on fast for 05 days) & voices/ demands/sympathy escalates,” he said in another tweet. Shatrughan Sinha’s last one ended with an appeal: “We appreciate & applaud Arvind’s commitment, determination & image. Hope & pray that good sense prevails & administration/bureaucracy does not repeat this. People are getting the impression that the leaders have been blocked from meeting on ur instructions Sir. God bless.Jai Hind”.However, Congress ally and Leader of Opposition in Jharkhand Hemant Soren said that events unfolding in Delhi are clearly brazen violation of constitutional norms.”After @ncbn’ji @MamataOfficial’ji @CMOKerala ‘ji & @hd_kumaraswamy’ji been denied permission by @LtGovDelhi to meet @ArvindKejriwal’ji y’day night, the events unfolding in #DelhiCrisis are clearly brazen violation of constitutional norms & #restrictedfederalism in the country,” Soren tweeted.Earlier in the day, rebutted the AAP’s claim that they were on strike, the Delhi IAS association asked Kejriwal government not to use its officers for ‘political gains’.Revenue Secretary Manisha Saxena, along with Transport Commissioner Varsha Joshi, South Delhi District Magistrate Amjad Tak and Directorate of Information and Publicity Secretary Jaydev Sarangi held a press conference and said that the IAS officers in Delhi are “working with utmost sincerity and dedication”.”We have been targeted and victimised and told that we are working with someone. We would like to inform that we are not on strike,” said Manisha Saxena. However, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has urged IAS Officers Association to stop the boycott of the elected government and return to work, assuring them of safety and security.West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Kerala’s Pinarayi Vijayan, Andhra Pradesh’s N Chandrababu Naidu and Karnataka’s H D Kumaraswamy also had a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Rajnath Singh on the sidelines of the NITI Aayog Governing Council meeting and urged the Centre to resolve the issue. With agency inputs

Blow to united opposition? BSP denies possibility of alliance with Congress in Madhya Pradesh

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) today said that it was not in talks with the Congress for an alliance for the Madhya Pradesh Assembly polls slated for later this year.A senior state BSP leader added that the party would, as things stand today, contest all 230 Assembly seats in the state. Talking to PTI, BSP state president Narmada Prasad Ahirwar said, “I was asked by the media that Congress leaders were saying that there are discussions underway with the BSP for an alliance for the next assembly elections. I clarified that we are not in discussions at the state level and, I think, neither at the central leadership level.” “As things stand today, we are going to contest all 230 Assembly seats. I have received no directives in this connection (alliance) from the central leadership,” Ahirwar said. The state Congress, meanwhile, has claimed that it never said alliance talks were underway with the BSP. “We never named any party. The Congress only said that we would try to have an alliance with political parties with a similar ideology. We never mentioned the BSP’s name. It will depend on the situation when we enter the election phase,” Madhya Pradesh Congress’ media department’s chief Manak Agarwal said. Assembly polls in Madhya Pradesh are likely to be held in November-December this year.In the 2013 MP Assembly elections, the Congress and the BSP polled 36.38 per cent and 6.29 per cent of the votes respectively against the BJP’s 44.88 per cent. The BJP won 165 seats, the Congress 58, the BSP four while Independents won three seats in the 230-member Assembly. In the 2008 Assembly polls, the Congress and the BSP secured 32.85 and 8.97 per cent votes respectively, which was collectively four per cent more than the 37.64 per cent vote share of the BJP.

Sri Ram Sene chief Pramod Muthalik indirectly compares slain journalist Gauri Lankesh to a dog

Sri Ram Sene chief Pramod Muthalik who is known for his controversial statements has done it again. He has indirectly compared slain journalist Gauri Lankesh to a dog on Sunday. Incidentally his organisation is under serious scrutiny , since the suspected shooter of Lankesh, Parashuram Waghmare, was an active member of the Hindutva outfit, according to police. Indirectly referring to the death of rationalists like Govind Pansare, Narendra Dabholkar, MM Kalburgi murders, Pramod Muthalik said, ” Two murders took place in Karnataka and two in Maharashtra in Congress rule. No one questioned Congress govt failure. Instead, they are asking why is PM Modi silent and not speaking on Gauri Lankesh’s death. Is Modi responsible even if any dog dies in Karnataka?”, he was quoted by ANI. However, later Muthalik said that he is not making a direct comparison between a dog and Gauri Lankesh. Muthalik was speaking in an interactive session in Bengaluru where he flatly denied Sri Ram Sene having any role in the death of Gauri Lankesh. However, the police is looking to question Rakesh Math, the Vijayapura district president of Sri Ram Sene, regarding his possible involvement in the brutal murder that took place on September 5 last year. Also readGauri Lankesh killing: SIT summons Sri Ram Sene district head, Pramod Muthalik distances himselfEarlier too Pramod Muthalik had distanced himself and his organisation from Waghmare and the killing of Lankesh and other rationalists. Lankesh was shot dead in front of her residence here on September 5 last year by motorbike-borne assailants. “There is no connection between Sri Ram Sene and Waghmare. He is neither our member nor our worker. This I say very clearly,” Muthalik said. The Sene chief said when the Pakistani flag hoisting issue surfaced, it was said that Waghmare was a member of Sri Ram Sene. However, he had proved that Waghmare was not a member of Sri Ram Sene but of RSS, he claimed. “I had shared his pictures sporting RSS uniform. I had said at that time that he is an RSS worker and not of Sri Ram Sene,” Muthalik told PTI.The family of Lankesh has expressed satisfaction over the progress made by the SIT, saying the probe was moving in the right direction and they will get justice. Also readGauri Lankesh’s killer ‘confesses’ he killed her to ‘save his religion’With PTI inputs

AAPvsLG: Fasting Satyendar Jain admitted to hospital, condition stable

Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain’s condition is stable, informed Dr JS Passey on Monday.”After watching his (Satyendar Jain) ketone report, we decided to admit him to hospital. His blood pressure is normal now. He is having some breathing issues, but stable,” Dr Passey, LNJP Hospital told ANI. He further said that Jain was stable in the afternoon but his ketone level was high and it was in the evening when he complained of headache, nausea and breathing problems. “Our team of 3 specialists- cardiologist, diabetologist and nephrologist, was checking them (protesting Ministers) morning and evening. Jain was stable in the afternoon but his ketone level was high. In the evening, he complained of headache, nausea, and breathing problems,” Dr Passey added. The Minister was admitted to LNJP Hospital after his health deteriorated during the ongoing ‘dharna’ at Raj Niwas on late Sunday night.Jain, along with Kejriwal, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and Cabinet minister Gopal Rai was on a sit-in strike at Raj Niwas, the official residence of Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal since June 11.The strike was called for to demand a direction to the IAS officers working under the Delhi administration to end their ‘undeclared strike’, among other demands. Also readVictims of AAP tamasha: BabusAs the deadlock continues, chief ministers of four-non-BJP ruled states urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene and solve the crisis. Later on Sunday, Kejriwal tried to salvage the situation by sending out an “assurance of safety” to the officers whom he called part of his families. The political slugfest between parties continued with the AAP upping the ante and organising a massive march to the prime minister’s residence. The march was, however, stopped by the police midway. Revenue Secretary Manisha Saxena, along with Transport Commissioner Varsha Joshi, South Delhi District Magistrate Amjad Tak and Directorate of Information and Publicity Secretary Jaydev Sarangi held a press conference and said that the IAS officers in Delhi were “working with utmost sincerity and dedication”.Also readAAP supporters turn protest path into filthEarlier in the day, Chief ministers of West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and urged him to intervene for solving the tussle between the L-G and the AAP government in Delhi, terming it a “constitutional crisis . Jaipur: Absence of state chief upsets BJP’s poll preparation

Due to prolonged indecisiveness and controversy over the election of the state president, the election preparation of the state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has failed to pick up momentum. Over a lot of activities that need to be undertaken in the run up to Assembly election, the party workers are in confusion over how to take things forward and have become inactive. Clearly, the prevailing scenario does not bode well for BJP’s prospects of winning the polls in the stateThe party chief Ashok Parnami resigned as the state president on April 16 and now its almost two months, but no name has been finalised for the post. For the post of state president, the Central leadership of BJP had forwarded the name of Union minister of state for agriculture and farmers welfare Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, but chief minister Vasundhara Raje is not in his favour. For the last two months, a lot of churning is being done by the state BJP and the central BJP over ‘the right choice’ of name, but the wait still has not got over. The BJP is divided over Shekhawat’s name. What’s striking is, even after giving resignation Ashok Parnami is seen at the forefront. Once the resignation is submitted by the president under the party constitution, his entire executive is considered dissolved. In such a situation, the present BJP’s state executive is not in existence. But full executive is working as office bearers with Parnami. Moreover, CM Raje herself has addressed Parnami as the party president in public functions that were recently held and BJP’s media cell too is addressing Parnami as the state president. Parnami had also joined the State BJP core committee meeting. Some senior workers said that only five months are left in the assembly elections and in such a situation, the organisation will have to suffer due to not having a state president.PARMANI YET TO GOWhat’s striking is, even after giving resignation Ashok Parnami is seen at the forefront. Once the resignation is submitted by the president under the party constitution, his entire executive is considered dissolved.

Victims of AAP tamasha: Babus

With the Aam Aadmi Party government labelling allegations after allegations against the bureaucracy in the National Capital and staging a march to the Prime Minister’s residence on Sunday over their non-cooperation, the IAS Officers’ Association rubbished its claims saying the officers were never on “strike”.In an unprecedented press conference, the Association said the IAS officers were beingdragged into politics.”I would like to inform that we are not on strike. We have been victimised and targeted. The allegations that we are on strike are completely false and baseless,” Manisha Saxena, revenue secretary, told the media. The officers said they are “apolitical” and only “follow the law and constitution”. However, due to this “abnormal situation” in the government, they had to call this presser to clarify their stance.”The IAS officers in Delhi are working with utmost dedication. Officers have been attending all statutory meetings except those where they feel unsafe or their self-respect is at risk,” they said.”We are attending all meetings, except those where we feel unsafe. After what happened to Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash, we have no confidence and nobody has reached out to us to boost our confidence,” said Saxena.Explaining one of the unattended meetings, officers said, the environment minister had called a meeting which was “too short notice” and he could not have cancelled his already scheduled meetings.Saxena was referring to the alleged assault of Anshu Prakash on February 19 after he was called to a late-night meeting at Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s residence at Civil Lines. The officers have since been boycotting meetings with ministers. She also hinted at being “threatened” once but chose not to elaborate on the same.Transport commissioner Varsha Joshi, against who the AAP had listed a number of meetings not attended, said, “We are frightened and victimised. I am compelled to speak, as I have been a victim of many personal and vicious attacks. Let us do our work. We are being used for completely political reasons.”The CM has alleged that the officers have been on a strike and do not attend meetings or attend phone calls, because of which work has been stuck for four months. The alleged “strike” has been one of the major reasons between the now long-drawn standoff between the elected head Kejriwal and administrative head of the city, Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal. Also, the elected government maintains that the strike is being carried out at the behest of the BJP.Kejriwal along with his ministers has been on a sit-in at Raj Niwas (LG House) urging him to meet them and ask the officers to call of their strike. The press conference was held jointly by Saxena, Varsha Joshi, transport commissioner, directorate of information and publicity (DIP) secretary, Jaydev Sarangi and South Delhi district magistrate Amjad Tak.

Not a ‘sweet’ start for milk scheme in Rajasthan

With the rollout of Annapurna Milk Scheme, which is set to be launched on July 2, the plight of the teachers of government schools in Rajasthan is going to increase. The reason behind their plight is the fact that while the teachers are strictly instructed under the scheme to ensure that schoolkids drink the milk provided, the state’s education department has forgotten to allocate budget for sugar.Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje had announced the scheme in the state budget this year. The scheme was drafted by the state education department, but it seems they forgot to add budget for sugar to add to the milk.According to sources, the department officials failed to allocate additional budget to schools for purchasing sugar and the school management shall only distribute ‘plain’ milk to the kids.”The department has allocated Rs 4,500 for gas connection, Rs 2,000 for utensils to each school besides budget for milk and glasses in the ratio of the students enrolled. However, no provision has been made for purchase of sugar,” said a senior officer with the education department.State education minister Vasudev Devnani and Mid-Day Meal Commissioner Ved Singh were not available to comment. The scheme to provide students with milk thrice a week was brought in with the aim to increase enrolment in government schools and madrassas. Each student of classes 1 to 5 will be provided 150 ml milk while students of class 6 to 8 will be provided with 200 ml of milk under the scheme.

NBCC reaffirms interest in carrying out Dharavi Redevelopment

NBCC India, the National Buildings Construction Corporation, is still interested in carrying out the redevelopment of Dharavi — Asia’s biggest slum — which is a big land mass filled with shanties. The state government has now decided to redevelop these slums via a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV). NBCC is looking for a 26 per cent share in the SPV.Only last week, Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadanvis, during his foreign visit to Dubai, had met MBM Group, one of the leading groups there. This group had shown interest in Dharavi redevelopment. Fadnavis, during one of his programmes last year, had announced that the government will redevelop Dharavi by forming an SPV.Yogesh Sharma, Executive Director (Engineer) said: “We are looking for a 26 per share in the SPV, the search for funding agencies is on.”The funding agencies will be foreign investors who will invest in the SPV that will ultimately redevelop Dharavi. Last year, in September, DNA had reported that NBCC was interested in redeveloping Dharavi, it was reconfirmed by NBCC again.NBCC works as a project management consultancy firm, which undertakes projects at a commission of eight to ten per cent of the total project cost. This would be the second big development in connection to Dharavi redevelopment within a week, post the Dubai group showing interest. It appoints reputed contractors who carry out the construction work. Currently, redevelopment of BDD chawls is underway in the same format, with MHADA being the nodal agency.

Rahul Gandhi should lead opposition alliance to defeat BJP in 2019 polls: Sheila Dikshit

Congress president Rahul Gandhi should be the natural leader of any rainbow coalition of opposition parties if they want to put up a serious challenge to BJP in the 2019 general election, Congress veteran Sheila Dikshit has said. The three-time Delhi Chief Minister said the country was facing serious challenge of “remaining together” under the Modi government and all the opposition parties must join hands, leaving aside their differences, to dethrone the current dispensation from power.”Look he is leading the party. Automatically the one who leads the party is chosen for everything. He is the leader of our party and if Congress has to lead the opposition alliance, then Rahul Gandhi automatically becomes its leader,” the 80-year-old Congress leader said.Buoyed by results of Karnataka Assembly election as well as recent bypolls, the Congress and and other prominent opposition leaders have been talking about the need to form a grand alliance to stop BJP’s electoral juggernaut in 2019 polls but there has been no consensus yet on who will lead such an alliance.”There is a small movement to bring together all the non-BJP parties is going on. That will require some understandings, some sort of adjustments,” she told PTI in an interview. Asked whether the Congress should try to stitch together the coalition, Dikshit said the time has come for such an alliance the party should go for it.The Congress leader, who was the chief minister of Delhi between 1998 and 2013, said India was going through a “very difficult phase” and that opposition parities must leave aside their differences for the sake of the country’s future. “As a country, the biggest struggle for us is to remain together. We are a nation which has got every religion here. Some may be bigger, some may be smaller. The basic philosophy of the country is to carry everybody together and make everybody feel that he is an Indian first. The Congress gave the feeling to everybody,” she said.Dikshit said Gandhi has emerged as a capable leader and there was no reason why he should not lead the opposition alliance.Asked about Sonia Gandhi’s role in the party, Dikshit said she remains the guiding force of the party and will remain so.”Sonia Gandhi has been the leader of the party for over two decades. She knows the party more than anybody else does and I do not think she will run away from responsibilities. She built up Congress when everybody felt the party is finished,” Dikshit said.Asked about Pranab Mukherjee’s recent visit to RSS headquarters in Nagpur, Dikshit said his speech there was good “but no body in Congress is being able to understand why he had to go there. There is a big why?” “There is disappointment in Congress. He spoke well there. His speech has been appreciated. But the visit was not expected,” she added. On whether Mukherjee’s visit legitimised the RSS, she said “RSS does not need legitimisation by anybody other then themselves. They have a particular way of dressing, they have a particular way of thinking. I do not think they need any legitimisation.” She observed that the RSS must have “gained” from Mukherjee’s visit. “They will take it as a gain,” she said.

Stop boycott of elected govt & return to work, I will ensure your safety: Kejriwal to IAS Officers Association

In an attempt to bring an end to the ongoing stand-off, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has urged IAS Officers Association to stop the boycott of the elected government and return to work, assuring them of safety and security.Kejriwal’s remarks came after Delhi’s IAS association officers held an unusual press conference at the Press Club and said that that they would not attend those meetings which they feel would be “unsafe”.They were apparently referring to the alleged assault of Delhi Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash by some AAP MLAs during an official meeting at Kejriwal’s residence on the night of February 19.Kejriwal, accompanied by his deputy Manish Sisodia and ministers Satyendar Jain and Gopal Rai, have stayed put at the Lieutenant Governor’s office since Monday, demanding that LG Anil Baijal should direct the IAS officers to end their “strike”.”I wish to assure that I will ensure their safety and security with all powers and resources available at my command. It is my duty. I have given similar assurances earlier also to many officers who have been meeting me privately. I reiterate it today,” Kejriwal said reacting to concerns expressed by IAS Association. The Chief Minister also said that the officers are a part of my family. “I would urge them to stop their boycott of elected govt, return to work now and start attending all meetings of Ministers, respond to their calls and messages and join them for field inspections.”Kejriwal also said that they shud work without fear or pressure. “They shud not come under any pressures from any sources, whether state govt or central govt or any political party.”Earlier in the day, IAS association rebutted the claim of the Aam Aadmi Party that its officers are on a strike and alleged they are being targeted and victimised.Revenue Secretary Manisha Saxena, along with Transport Commissioner Varsha Joshi, South Delhi District Magistrate Amjad Tak and Directorate of Information and Publicity Secretary Jaydev Sarangi said that the IAS officers in Delhi are “working with utmost sincerity and dedication”.The officers also said that they are apolitical and neutral and their job is to implement the policies of the government.”We have been targeted and victimised and told that we are working with someone. We would like to inform that we are not on strike,” Saxena said. The officers denied the charge that the secretaries in the Delhi government are not answering the phone calls of ministers and MLAs and said that none of the phone calls go unanswered. “Delhi has a unique position and it is something on which we have no control….We neither support any political party nor we are against any political party. We work as per law and Constitution,” Saxena said. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Kerala’s Pinarayi Vijayan, Andhra Pradesh’s N Chandrababu Naidu and Karnataka’s H D Kumaraswamy had a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Rajnath Singh on the sidelines of the NITI Aayog Governing Council meeting and urged the Centre to resolve the issue.Terming the deadlock as “political crisis”, the opposition leaders had said that people should not suffer due to any political crisis brought about by any political party.

People are feeling insulted, whole country urges you to end IAS strike: Kejriwal to PM Modi after AAP protest march

Amid an intensifying tussle between Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday once again urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to bring an end to bureaucrats strike, even though the IAS association rebutted the claim of the Aam Aadmi Party that its officers are being targeted and victimised.Replying to Modi’s tweet sharing details about his closing remarks at the NITI Aayog Governing Council meet, Arvind Kejriwal said that people are feeling insulted.”Sir, not just Delhi, but the whole country is urging you. Bring an end to IAS officers’ strike and please let the elected government work. People are feeling insulted,” Kejriwal said in a tweet written in Hindi.Arvind Kejriwal along with his deputy Manish Sisodia, ministers Satyendar Jain and Gopal Rai, is sitting at the office of Lt Governor Anil Baijal for past one week, demanding him to direct IAS officers to end their “strike” and approve doorstep delivery scheme of his government. To support Kejriwal and protest against the Centre, AAP leaders and thousands of workers marched towards Narendra Modi’s residence holding a placard which read – “Modi ji, LG stop taking revenge” – however, they were stopped midway by Delhi police. The CPI(M) also joined them in the protest, signalling that the opposition parties were closing ranks with Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in his confrontation with the Centre. The CPI(M)’s support to Kejriwal came as the TDP, the TMC, the JD(S) also appeared to supporting him in the confrontation with the Delhi Lt. Governor and the Centre. In an unusual press conference at the Press Club, Revenue Secretary Manisha Saxena, along with Transport Commissioner Varsha Joshi, South Delhi District Magistrate Amjad Tak and Directorate of Information and Publicity Secretary Jaydev Sarangi said that the IAS officers in Delhi are “working with utmost sincerity and dedication”.The officers also said that they are apolitical and neutral and their job is to implement the policies of the government.”We are answerable only to the law and the Constitution,” they said.”We have been targeted and victimised and told that we are working with someone. We would like to inform that we are not on strike,” Saxena said. TMC chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Kerala’s Pinarayi Vijayan, Andhra Pradesh’s N Chandrababu Naidu and Karnataka’s H D Kumaraswamy had a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Rajnath Singh on the sidelines of the NITI Aayog Governing Council meeting and urged the Centre to resolve the issue.DMK working President MK Stalin also tweeted in support of Kejriwal.”I am concerned with the disdain shown by Lt. Gov. of Delhi towards an elected Chief Minister like @ArvindKejriwal. The BJP is proactively destroying the federal structure of this nation. I express my solidarity with the Chief Ministers who are standing up for States’ rights,” he said.Meanwhile, Delhi Congress chief Ajay Maken said Kejriwal should put an end to the crisis by expressing “regrets” to Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash, who was allegedly manhandled by AAP legislators at the chief minister’s residence during a late night meeting on February 19.The Delhi BJP accused Kejriwal of resorting to a “political stunt” in a bid to form an “anti-BJP, anti-Narendra Modi” front in the run-up to the 2019 Lok Sabha election.

‘Mahagathbandhan’ can be revived if Nitish Kumar cuts ties with BJP-led NDA: Congress

The ‘mahagathbandhan’ (grand alliance) can be revived if Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar snaps ties with the BJP-led NDA, the Congress party’s state in-charge and national spokesperson Shakti Singh Gohil said today.”If any such possibility emerges, then we will definitely discuss it with our allies,” Gohil told PTI Bhasha when asked how the party would react if Kumar decides to return. The Congress, RJD and Kumar’s JD(U) had forged the ‘mahagathbandhan’ in 2015 ahead of the Bihar assembly elections to halt the BJP’s juggernaut.Gohil’s remarks come amid conflicting statements being made by the BJP and JD(U) over seat sharing for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. These statements have fuelled speculation that all is not well between the friends-turned-foes-turned-friends.In contrast, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav had recently said that the doors of the ‘mahagathbandhan’ had been closed for Kumar. The JD(U) ended its 17-year-old alliance with the NDA in 2013 when Narendra Modi was declared the prime ministerial candidate. He again joined hands with the NDA in 2017.Gohil claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government was perceived as anti-backward castes.Speaking of Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) leader Ram Vilas Paswan and Rashtriya Lok Samta Party (RLSP) leader Upendra Kushwaha, both NDA allies, Gohil said that parties with OBC and most backward castes (MBC) vote banks had no option but to snap ties with the BJP or go down with it.Terming the anti-BJP alliance necessary for national welfare, he said that it would naturally be led by the Congress since it is the biggest opposition party. The people of India will defeat the BJP in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections under the leadership of Congress president Rahul Gandhi, Gohil said.We have a history of not being arrogant and we take our allies along, he said.”Nitish Kumar is with the fascist BJP. We do not know what compelled him to join hands with the party; they are incompatible,” Gohil said.Gohil asserted that the Congress president and Modi could not be compared as Gandhi was fighting for the truth. He also expressed confidence that there will be no differences between the mahagathbandhan allies over the seat distribution in Bihar for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

‘All departments working, false information being spread’: Amid Delhi stand-off, IAS officers counter Kejriwal charges

Amid ongoing stand-off in Delhi, the IAS Association members on Sunday countered Arvind Kejriwal led Aam Aadmi Party’s charges and said that they are not on strike and malicious information about them is being spread.Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, his deputy Manish Sisodia and ministers Gopal Rai and Satyendar Jain have been at Lt Governor Anil Baijal’s office since last seven days to press for their demands, including a direction to IAS officers to end their “strike” and action against those who have struck work for “four months”.Kejriwal has alleged that the work of the AAP government has been affected due to the “strike”. The officers’ association maintains that no officer is on strike and no work has been affected. However, denying Kejriwal’s charges, IAS Association Member Manisha Saxena said, “We are not on strike. The misinformation being spread is false and malicious. We are attending all meetings and all departments are doing their work. Everybody is working, sometimes on our holidays.”Another member, Varsha Joshi said, “Let us do our work. We are feeling frightened and victimised. We are being used for completely political reasons.”Meanwhile, the AAP is holding the march to support the sit-in of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his cabinet colleagues. The Delhi chief minister has claimed that the IAS officers working for Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD) were “only working on important files” and “not responding to Ministers’ calls and messages, and not attending meetings”.Therefore, Kejriwal had asked Baijal to direct the IAS officers to end their strike and take action against officers who have allegedly struck work for four months.Chief Ministers of West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and Karnataka also arrived at Lieutenant Governor Baijal’s office on Saturday to meet and extend support to the Delhi Chief Minister on the issue.

Bihar CM Nitish Kumar admits his stringent prohibition laws have ‘hurt some people’

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday said that provisions of prohibition law were being misused by certain people in the government machinery and a solution to the problem would be found by reviewing these. At a function of the JD(U) , he, however, said prohibition had indeed “hurt some people but benefited 90 per cent of the population in the state’.‘This has brought back happiness in the homes of the poor and created an atmosphere of peace and harmony, free from domestic strife,” he said.‘Nevertheless, we keep reviewing our policies. There have been complaints of misuse of the prohibition law and allegations of involvement of those in the government machinery. This problem too would be solved after a review,” he said.He said, ‘The people who have been badly hit by prohibition are making all kinds of analyses and saying so many things’, in an apparent reference to criticisms by opposition parties, particularly former chief minister and Hindustani Awam Morcha founder Jitan Ram Manjhi who recently quit the ruling NDA and joined the RJD-Congress combine.Manjhi has been alleging that mostly people from the deprived sections were being hauled up under the prohibition law.Kumar also said, ‘A survey is being done of the people who have faced a problem of livelihood because of prohibition and a number of rehabilitation schemes are being implemented for them.”Sale and consumption of alcohol was completely banned in Bihar by Kumar two years ago in keeping with a promise he had made to the state’s electorate, especially women, during the Assembly elections in 2015.

Vibrant Gujarat Summits to showcase state’s business muscle

The flagship biennial business event of Gujarat will showcase the state’s might in sectors where it has significant contribution nationally, a top official said here on Saturday. Industrial clusters in the state, which have made a mark nationally and internationally, will also be showcased to the visitor so that more business is generated. The idea is to promote small businesses, which are the backbone of India’s economy. “During Vibrant Gujarat Summits, we are not able to leverage the benefit from visiting delegates to the extent to which we would like to. We would like to see more interaction between companies,” JN Singh, Chief Secretary, told businessmen at GCCI on Saturday during the launch of ‘Japan Desk’ at GCCI.Often public sector units like Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam and Gujarat Alkalies are given stalls in the exhibition area during previous Vibrant Gujarat Summits, Singh said. However, these are not able to generate business. Singh also called upon business leaders at GCCI to prepare a relevant database of local players so that they can interact with foreign delegates in a more structured manner. Sectors like ceramics, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and petrochemicals are some the sectors where Gujarat is very strong.“We would like to highlight such sectors and clusters during the summit so that they can interact with visitors from all over India and abroad. We want them, especially the MSMEs to create business linkages and get maximum benefit from them,” said Singh. The state government will also publicize them on relevant platforms. He also asked GCCI to take a lead in the initiative. Jaimin Vasa, who took over the baton from Shailesh Patwari as the president of GCCI on Saturday said that he is creating a presentation in this regard, which would be presented to the state government.Jayendra Tanna, outgoing vice president of GCCI said that a similar initiative was taken by GCCI during Vibrant Gujarat Summit in 2013 and over 3,500 meeting was held with foreign delegates. “It was well received by local participants,” said Tanna.

Short on sand, real estate developers in Rajasthan face penalty threat

Faced with the unprecedented crisis of construction sand, the real estate developers in the state are having a tough time coming to terms with Real Estate Regulatory Act (RERA) and have thus sought relaxation in the prescribed deadline for completion of their projects registered with RERA. As there is no provision that addresses a situation like this, these developers have sought intervention of the state government. “We have explained our difficulties to the chief minister and submitted our proposal for relaxation in the deadline to chief secretary and urban department,” said Gopal Gupta chairman of CREDAI, Rajasthan. According to the real estate developers body, short supply of construction sand has slowed down the construction works by almost 50 per cent. The crisis has emerged following a ban imposed by Supreme Court on unwarranted mining of bajri from river beds in the state. The shortage of the construction sand has affected all infrastructure projects, however, the real estate projects are also facing possibilities of penalty under RERA for missing out on the completion deadline. The RERA authorities though deny of any relaxation, the authorities holding it as a market supply related issue deny of any provision under the act to extend a relaxation. Such a relaxation can only be extended in case the developers are able to acquire written consent of ‘two-third of the allottees’.There are over 700 real estate projects registered with RERA, Rajasthan. Most projects to have been registered at the state still have couple of years to meet the completion deadline, however, the construction crisis to have continued for several months does not seem to get over in near future. The alternates such as stone dust and other manufactured sand are insufficient to meet the demand and to miss the completion deadline may subject the developers to penalty upto 10 per cent of the project cost and even imprisonment.Works Slow DownAccording to real estate developers body, short supply of construction sand has slowed down the construction works by almost 50%. AAP leaders’ sit-in a publicity stunt: BJP

The BJP legislators sitting on a ‘dharna’ at Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s office at the Delhi Secretariat continued with their hunger strike for the second day on Saturday. The Delhi unit BJP leaders — Vijender Gupta, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, Jagdish Pradhan and Parvesh Verma — and rebel Aam Aadmi Party MLA Kapil Mishra also wrote to President Ram Nath Kovind, seeking his intervention to end Kejriwal and his cabinet colleagues’ sit-in protest at Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal’s office. The BJP legislators and Mishra had launched the ‘dharna’ at Kejriwal’s office on Wednesday, two days after Kejriwal and his party members began their protest at Baijal’s office.Sitting outside the office of Delhi CM, the BJP leaders along with Kapil Mishra announced that they would remain on the hunger strike indefinitely.Demanding a direction to the IAS officers working in the Delhi administration to end their “strike” and approve the Delhi government’s proposal for doorstep delivery of ration to the poor, Kejriwal, his deputy Manish Sisodia and ministers Satyendar Jain and Gopal Rai sat on the dharna on Monday evening. The BJP said the AAP’s dharna is a “publicity stunt”. “People are struggling for water, the city is chocking under dust pollution. Instead of addressing these concerns, the CM has pulled off this publicity stunt,” they wrote to the president. Mishra, who was removed by Kejriwal from his cabinet last year, asserted that their hunger strike will go on till the Chief Minister resumes work.LETTER TO PREZThe BJP leaders and rebel Aam Aadmi Party MLA Kapil Mishra also wrote to President Ram Nath Kovind, seeking his intervention to end Kejriwal and his cabinet colleagues’ sit-in protest

Juna Akhara to confer highest title on 5 Dalit women during Kumbh

Amid controversies surrounding Dalits being denied entry into temples, the Juna Akhara will confer the highest honour of ‘mahamandaleshwar’ (seers) to five Dalit women and appoint them as the Head Priestess at its temples across the country during Kumbh 2019.The Akhara, which is the oldest and largest among 13 akharas in the country, will also enroll about 551 Dalits, including 221 Dalit women, as Sanyasis and Sanyasins during the Kumbh 2019.Its chief patron Mahant Mahendra Giri said the exercise is aimed at removing the superstition, caste inequalities and social stigma attached to lower castes that they cannot perform religious ceremonies. He also blamed politicians for using them as vote-bank and dividing the society on caste lines for political gains.”It is not the birth, but deeds of a person decide the castes. The move is aimed at redefining the prevalent caste system by bringing Dalits to the mainstream of the society,” he said. The Juna Akhara has a long tradition of involving Dalits into religious work. It has over 1,500 Dalit sanyasis, including 500 Dalit women sanyasins, as members across country. The Akahara has already conferred the highest honour of mahamandelshwar on eight Dalit seers, including three women.Mahant Giri said that a coronation ceremony would be organized during Kumb 2019 in which these Dalit seers, sanyasis and sanyasins will be given ‘diksha’ and will be enrolled as Sanyasis and Sanyasis into the Juna Akahara fold.As per the Akhara traditions, they will be tonsured and perform their own ‘pind daan’ amid chanting of Vedic mantras for their purification and new birth. They will be cut off from the materialistic world to enter into the spiritual world. They will be given a ‘dand’ (a holy stick) and would survive on alms and give their entire life to the devotion of God.

Kejriwal vs LG: Where were these CMs when Delhi chief secy was assaulted, asks BJP

Criticising the decision of four non-NDA chief ministers to extend support to their Delhi counterpart Arvind Kejriwal who has been protesting at the LG office here, the BJP today questioned why they did not object to the assault on Delhi Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash.Senior BJP leader Vijay Goel said the four leaders “are in the national capital to attend the NITI Aayog meeting and not to do politics. It doesn’t suit them”.”Where were they when Delhi Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash was assaulted at Kejriwal’s residence in his presence? And what will happen if the chief secretaries of their states also come out in support of Prakash,” Goel said.West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy and Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan went to Kejriwal’s residence after the LG “denied” them permission to meet the AAP leader.Kejriwal has been protesting at the Raj Niwas, demanding that the “strike” by bureaucrats in the city be called off.The bureaucrats in Delhi are not meeting Delhi ministers as part of their protest against an alleged assault on Prakash in February. Disqualified AIADMK MLA withdraws petition in Madras HC to face bypoll

Days after the Madras High Court delivered a split verdict on a batch of petitions challenging the disqualification of the 18 rebel AIADMK MLAs owing allegiance to TTV Dhinakaran, Thanga Tamilselvan, one of the disqualified legislator, has announced his decision to withdraw his petition challenging the Speaker’s order disqualifying him as he doesn’t want his constituency voters to suffer because of the inordinate delay in the court case.Thamilselvan, a staunch loyalist of former chief minister J Jayalalithaa’s close aide VK Sasikala and her nephew and Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam leader TTV Dhinakaran, has decided to withdraw the petition to seek fresh mandate from voters of his prestigious Andipatti Assembly Constituency even as the 17 other disqualified legislators preferred to fight it out in the court.“I have lost trust in the courts. Already the people of 18 assembly seats are suffering without an MLA for nine months. I have no idea when the third judge would be appointed to hear our petitions again and when he will deliver the judgement. If the case is dragged for two years, my tenure of the MLA itself will come to an end. Then what is the point in fighting the court case?” he said.He said that if he withdraws the petition, the Speaker’s decision would come into effect and the Election Commission would declare the seat as vacant and contest the bypoll. “I was elected thrice from the Andipatti seat. I am confident of emerging victorious as the voters know about me well,” he said.Andipatti constituency is a stronghold of AIADMK. The prestigious seat which has returned AIADMK candidates to the Assembly since 1977 except in 1989 and 1996, was represented by two chief ministers – M G Ramachandran (1984) and J Jayalalithaa (2002 and 2006).AMMK leader Dhinakaran said that he did not see anything wrong in the decision of Thanga Tamilselvan to withdraw his petition even though it was his personal decision. “When the Madras HC delivered its split verdict, Tamilselvan told his decision to withdraw the petition to face the election and sought the opinion of other disqualified MLAs as well. Others have decided to fight it out in the court,” he said. He said that the bypoll would be a political challenge for the Edappadi K Palanswami government.“I had won from the RK Nagar assembly seat which was represented by Amma (Jayalalithaa). If he (Thanga Tamilselvan) could win from Andipatti which was represented by MGR and Amma contesting from the Cooker symbol allotted to us, we can show the betrayers (AIADMK government) that we are true inheritors of two leaves symbol,” he told reporters here.Senior AIADMK leader and Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar dismissed the disqualified MLA Thanga Tamilselvan decision to withdraw the petition and contest in the bypoll as Dhinakaran’s attempt to test water (to know the people’s mood).

Congress, JD(S) differ on presenting new budget

In yet another sign of birth pangs in their coalition, Congress and JD(S) in Karnataka on Saturday differed on the tabling of a new full fledged budget for 2018-19.While the Congress said there was no need for a fresh budget and insisted that a supplementary budget would do, JD(S) asserted that a fresh one was needed to demonstrate the direction of the new government.Strongly pushing for a new budget, Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy said he would meet Congress President Rahul Gandhi to sort out the issue soon.Former chief minister and Chairman of the Congress-JD(S) coordination committee Siddaramaiah expressed his strong reservations over presenting a new full fledged budget, saying there was no need for such an exercise.Siddaramaiah, who is also the Congress Legislature Party leader, said he had already tabled the budget as chief minister a few months ago.”Budget has already been tabled. It is a full-fledged budget only. That’s why we had taken vote on accounts for fourmonths. It will be there till July end. All the ongoing programmes and new programmes announced in the budget will continue,” said Siddaramaiah. He advised Kumaraswamy that if he wants to carry out certain projects and launch some schemes, he can bring out a supplementary budget.Reacting to Siddaramaiah’s ‘suggestion’, Kumaraswamy told reporters in Delhi that the new government has to demonstrate its objectives to the people.”Whenever a new government comes to power, it needs to demonstrate what its goals are. We cannot limit ourselves to presenting supplementary budget because there are many challenges before the government.”He also said the Congress as well as the JD(S) made several promises incorporating new programmes.”A supplementary budget would not suffice to incorporate them all,” he said.Kumaraswamy reminded Siddaramaiah about his statement in the past that if a new government takes over after the election, a new budget may be presented.”Today Janata Dal (S) and Congress have formed a coalition government. Usually when a new government comes to power, its duty is to present the best budget and send our message to people through it,” the chief minister said.In this connection, he said, he would meet Rahul Gandhi in a day or two and sort out the matter.Replying to a question, Kumaraswamy said, “I am not uncomfortable with mycoalition government but I have become uncomfortable for my media friends.”He conceded that delay in the expansion of cabinet gave room for speculative media reports doubting the longevity of the government.”Let us assume that there is a threat to the government as you are speculating but at least nobody can touch (this government) till the parliament elections. This is what I had said (yesterday),” he said.”After the Congress decided to retain this governmentfor five years, it is their wish to run this coalitiongovernment not just for five years but for 10 to 15 years, just as Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) ran the coalition government in Maharashtra,” he added.Kumaraswamy appealed to the media to allow him to work and said the common minimum programme would be ready in 10 days.

‘Centre restricting federal system’: Four CMs attack Modi govt supporting Kejriwal, seek PM’s intervention

Four non-BJP Chief Ministers on Saturday attacked Narendra Modi government at Centre and accused it of restricting the federal system while supporting Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal amid his sit-in protest at the LG’s office along with his three cabinet colleagues. At the press conference at Kejriwal’s residence after they were not allowed to go to L-G Anil Baijal’s house, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy and Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan asked the Centre to resolve the “crisis” immediately. The open support to Kejriwal by the four chief ministers assume significance as it comes amidst efforts by leading opposition parties to cobble together a rainbow coalition ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.Kejriwal accompanied by his deputy Manish Sisodia and ministers Satyendar Jain and Gopal Rai have stayed put at the office demanding that Baijal direct IAS officers to end their “strike” and approve doorstep ration delivery scheme.Speaking to media, Mamata Banerjee said, “We will tell the PM to intervene in this matter and solve it. Had the President been here, we would have told him too. This is a democracy and that is how a democracy functions.”The Chief Minister also termed the situation in Delhi as a constitutional crisis. “There should never be such crisis due to which a govt and the common people have to suffer,” she said.”There are two Crore people in Delhi. The work has been disrupted since last four months, there can be nothing more unfortunate than this. LG is the appointed leader, if not he then to whom will one to go to seek time & talk,” she asked.Mamata also said that she wanted to meet Delhi CM but she was told, verbally and not even written, that permission will not be granted. “We four of us wrote to LG for an appointment but we were told that he (LG) is not even there. We waited so long but we were not allowed.”Blaming the Central government attitude for the situation in Delhi, Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan said, “Because of the attitude of Central govt this happened. Centre is restricting the federal system which is a threat to the nation. Everyone is with him (Delhi CM). All the democratic people are with Delhi CM.”The four chief ministers also visited Kejriwal’s residence to meet his family members. They are in Delhi to attend NITI Aayog meeting to be held tomorrow. The bureaucrats in Delhi are not meeting Delhi ministers as part of their protest against an alleged assault on Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash in February. The bureaucrats are demanding an apology from Kejriwal for the incident. Kejriwal has alleged that there is de facto President’s rule in Delhi because of what the AAP government describes as an ongoing IAS officers’ strike.Kejriwal made the allegation as his sit-in along with three cabinet colleagues at the waiting room of Lt Governor Anil Baijal’s office entered its sixth day.In response to a tweet about IAS officers withdrawing from work being de facto President’s rule, Kejriwal tweeted, “I agree. It is de facto President’s rule in Delhi thro IAS strike (sic).” Jain and Sisodia have been sitting on hunger strike at the waiting room of the L-G Secretariat since Tuesday and Wednesday respectively. The chief minister has asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to work with his officers not attending his meetings.”Elected Chief Minister must get due respect. May I appeal to the government of India and the LG to resolve the problem immediately so that people do not suffer”, Ms Banerjee had tweeted on Wednesday.

Congress, BJP slam Khaira’s support to Sikh ‘referendum’; Punjab CM seeks clarification from Kejriwal

Political parties in Punjab, including the ruling Congress and the BJP, today strongly criticised Aam Aadmi Party senior leader Sukhpal Singh Khaira for reportedly supporting Sikh “referendum” 2020 campaign.Congress leaders and legislators lashed out at Khaira, the leader of opposition in Punjab Assembly, for his “open and blatant support” to the campaign aimed at seceding Punjab from India and again dividing the country along religious lines.Chief Minister Amarinder Singh condemned Khaira for “backing secessionism” by supporting the campaign, propounded by Sikh radicals for a separate Sikh homeland.Yesterday, Khaira reportedly said: “I support the Sikh referendum 2020 movement as Sikhs have the right to demand justice against atrocities suffered by them.” In a statement, Singh said Khaira seemed to be indulging in political antics without any sense of the history of Punjab or any realisation of the possible consequences of his statement. The other Congress leaders, including Ramanjit Singh Sikki, Harminder Singh Gill and Hardev Singh Ladi, in a joint statement sought clarification from AAP chief and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, asking him whether he subscribed to Khaira’s stand.”You must sack Khaira from the party and if you do not do that it will amount to your consent and concurrence to the anti-national designs of Khaira,” they said in the statement.Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia termed Khaira’s statement a “proof of divisive politics played by AAP.” Amid the barrage of criticism, Khaira today responded to the Punjab chief minister in a tweet: “I am surpised a leader of your level is tweeting against me without checking his facts, I am not a votary of 2020 but I don’t hesitate to point out a consistent policy of discrimination against Sikhs by central governments! Be it attack on Darbar Sahib, genocide of Sikhs leading to 2020.” But BJP leader Manoranjan Kalia said Khaira “double speaks” by supporting simultaneously the referendum as well as owing allegiance to the Constitution and supporting a united India. Kalia said it was an “open secret” that the campaign is a brainchild of Sikhs For Justice, a secessionist organisation headquartered in Canada.”Declaring support for referendum 2020 by Khaira establishes his links with secessionists supporting Khalistan,” the former minister said.In his statement, Punjab chief minister Singh said Khaira seemed to be completely unmindful of what the state had been through and the dangers of his ill-thought statement. He dismissed as hypocrisy Khaira’s claim that he stood for India’s unity while supporting the campaign, terming it a classic case of “running with the hares and hunting with the hounds”.Singh also demanded to know whether Khaira’s statement had the backing of the AAP central leadership. This was important considering Kejriwal himself was hobnobbing with pro-Khalistanis when he was campaigning in Punjab in the run-up to the Assembly elections last year, he alleged. The AAP leadership should clarify their stand on the sensitive issue, which has the potential to plunge Punjab back into the dark days of terrorism, the chief minister said. The Congress leaders said those fuelling secession via the “referendum” were sitting comfortably thousands of miles away in the west, while trying to set Punjab on fire and push the youth toward disaster by using people like Khaira.

Gauri Lankesh killing: SIT summons Sri Ram Sene district head, Pramod Muthalik distances himself

The Special Investigation Team probing the killing of journalist-activist Gauri Lankesh has summoned Rakesh Math, the Vijayapura district president of fringe right-wing outfit Sri Ram Sene, for questioning, a senior police official said today. The SIT decided to question Math since the suspected shooter of Lankesh, Parashuram Waghmare, was an active member of the Hindutva organisation linked to moral policing in parts of Karnataka, the official told PTI.The official, from the SIT, said they wanted to find out whether Math was involved in Lankesh’s assassination and whether he “brainwashed” Waghmare to participate in the plot.Math and Waghmare were allegedly involved in hoisting a Pakistani flag outside the tahsildar office in their hometown Sindagi of Vijayapura district in Karnataka in January 2012.The SIT believes Math has a strong support base in coastal regions, including Mangaluru, and parts of north Karnataka.”We have summoned Rakesh Math. He has not come yet,” the official said.Sri Ram Sene founder and chief Pramod Muthalik has distanced himself and his organisation from Waghmare and the killing of Lankesh and other rationalists.Lankesh was shot dead at the entrance of her Bengaluru residence on September 5 last year.”There is no connection between Sri Ram Sene and Waghmare. He is neither our member nor our worker. This I say very clearly,” said Muthalik. The Sene chief said when the Pakistani flag hoisting issue had come to light, it was said that Waghmare was a member of Sri Ram Sene. However, he said he has proved that Waghmare was not a member of Sri Ram Sene but of RSS.”I had shared his pictures sporting RSS uniform. I had said at that time that he is an RSS worker and not of Sri Ram Sene,” Muthalik said.Conceding that Math is the district head of Sene, Muthalik said he has been summoned for inquiry because all of them are from Sindagi town and were involved in the Pakistani flag hoisting incidentSince both Waghmare and Math were involved in the Pakistani flag case and were from the same town, the police might have summoned the latter for interrogation, he told PTI.”Rakesh Math is our district president. However, the organisation has its own constitution according to which it functions. If somebody does something privately in his personal capacity, it cannot be held responsible,” he said.Parashuram Waghmare’s father Ashok Waghmare, who had come from Sindagi to Bengaluru to see his son, said he was innocent but could not recall where he (Parashuram) was on September 5, the day Lankesh was shot dead.”I think he was at home,” Ashok Waghmare told a Kannada news channel.Math said he came to Bengaluru following a notice to appear for the inquiry.”I received a notice stating that my presence was required for the investigation (of Lankesh murder case),” Math told the channel. He also said he has been Parashuram Waghmare’s friend and his arrest was quite shocking. He said he came to know about his (Parashuram Waghmare’s) arrest after the police picked him up.Math was confident that his friend would come out clean. He denied his involvement in the killing and said he has only been doing organisational work.

After Andaman, Delhi Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash may be transferred

Amidst the ongoing protests in the national capital, speculations over the transfer posting of Delhi Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash gained momentum after the transfer orders of Andaman’s Chief Secretary Anindo Majumdar were issued. However, there is no mention about the post he will be handling. A 1985 batch IAS officer, Anindo Majumdar was transferred to Andaman Nicobar Islands in March 2016. According to sources, Majumdar, a senior to the present Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash, will not be given any post under Prakash. The bureaucracy and the AAP government has been at loggerheads since February 2018 after Anshu Prakash was allegedly assaulted by AAP MLAs at CM Arvind Kejriwal’s residence. The incident sparked a cold war between the government and the bureaucracy with IAS officers refuting to attend any regular meetings with the AAP ministers. “Chances are high that he (Majumdar) will be given the charged of Delhi administration and Anshu Prakash will be transferred to some other post. A senior bureaucrat cannot work under a junior officer,” said a senior official.Prakash, a 1986-batch IAS officer of the Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory (AGMUT) cadre was transferred to Delhi in January 2017. Previously, he was working as Additional Secretary in Rural Development in Centre. Prakash served as different capacity such as Transport Secretary as well as Joint Secretary in the Health and Family Welfare department of Delhi government.Majumdar and Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government maintain a sour relationship after the government locked the office of then senior bureaucrat Majumdar in 2016 who had issued an order notifying the appointment of Shakuntala Gamlin as acting chief secretary. Gamlin shot to fame after Kejriwal objected her elevation by Najeeb Jung after Chief Secretary KK Sharma went on leave for 10 days on 13 May. The CM also accused Gamlin of lobbying for power companies. In December 2015, DANICS officers went on mass leave for one day when two special home secretaries were suspended by Delhi Home Minister Satyender Jain.

Big breakthrough in Shujaat Bukhari killing, cops nab 4th suspect who picked up gun after attack

The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Friday arrested a suspect in connection with the killing of veteran journalist Shujaat Bukhari and two of his Personal Security Officers, Kashmir’s top police officer announced today. The suspect has been identified as Zubair Qadri, Inspector General (IG) Kashmir Swayam Prakash Pani said at a hurriedly called press conference. He said Qadri was seen in the video stealing the pistol of the PSO who was shot dead along with Bukhari. “The pistol has since been recovered and he is being questioned about his presence at the scene of the crime. So far, he has not been able to give any convincing answers,” he said.Pani added that the state police had formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under Deputy Inspector General (central Kashmir) VK Virdi to probe the killing of the editor of Rising Kashmir yesterday.Pani also described the killing of the journalist as a “terror attack”.The identity of the other three attackers was being ascertained, the police official said.Bukhari, 50, was gunned down yesterday evening soon after he got into his car from his office at Press Enclave in the city centre, Lal Chowk. His two personal security officers were also killed. The final journey Earlier in the day, the Rising Kashmir editor was laid to rest in his ancestral village of Baramulla with thousands of friends and admirers braving heavy rain to mourn a veteran journalist, who had championed peace in times of conflict and may have been killed for it. The Rising Kashmir, which hit the stands as usual, also carried the message that it would not be cowed by cowards who had snatched him from them.‘You left all too sudden but you will always be our leading light with your professional conviction and exemplary courage. We won’t be cowed down by the cowards who snatched you from us. We will uphold your principle of telling the truth howsoever unpleasant it may be…Rest in peace!’ the paper said. The message found wide echo as crowds of tearful mourners from across the Valley followed the cortege through the streets of this sleepy hamlet in Baramulla district, a short distance from Srinagar. Among those who took part in the last rites of Bukhari and visited his ancestral home to condole with the family were opposition leader Omar Abdullah and ministers from the PDP and the BJP.It was probably the biggest funeral procession the village had seen, observers said. There was a traffic jam in the area as the crowds of mourners swelled.Bukhari, 50, was gunned down yesterday evening soon after he got into his car from his office at Press Enclave in the city centre, Lal Chowk. The killing of the journalist, on his way to an iftar party, and that of an army jawan going home for Eid comes just before the Centre’s Ramzan ceasefire ends, triggering debate on whether the Centre should resume operations against the militants. As outrage grew over the audacious killing during the holy month of Ramzan, police today sought help of the public in identifying the suspects. The police issued a screen grab from a video, recorded by a passerby following the attack, showing a bearded man surveying the inside the journalist’s vehicle.Late last night, the police hadreleased two pictures of three bike-borne men, who were caught on a CCTV camera and are suspected to have killed Bukhari. Bukhari, who is survived by his wife and two children, was instrumental in organising several conferences for peace in the Kashmir Valley. He was also part of the Track II process with Pakistan. According to Omar Abdullah, the Rising Kashmir had published a fitting tribute to its editor. ‘The show must go on. As Shujaat would have wanted it to,’ the former chief minister wrote on Twitter while sharing a picture of the front page of the paper.Expressing extreme sadness at Bukhari’s death, BSP chief Mayawati said the time had come for the Narendra Modi government to “shun its stubborn attitude and immediately review its Kashmir policy in the interest of the country”.N Ram, the chairperson of The Hindu group, where Bukhari worked between 1997 and 2012, said the late journalist was not a government man, he was not an establishment man, nor was he in sympathy with the extremist elements. “He believed, I think, he was voice for a just solution however difficult that is going to be in Jammu and Kashmir,” Ram told NDTV in an interview. The noted editor said the killing had come as a shock because it was believed that journalists will not be killed in Jammu and Kashmir.”There have been such cases in the past but not many. You have to go back 15 years before you could recollect that a journalist was killed,” he said. Bukhari is the fourth journalist to be killed by militants in the nearly three-decade violence in Kashmir. In 1991, the editor of Alsafa, Mohammed Shaban Vakil, was killed by militants of the Hizbul Mujahideen.Four years later, in 1995, former BBC correspondent Yussuf Jameel escaped with injuries when a bomb exploded in his office. ANI cameramen Mushtaq Ali lost his life in the incident. In 2003, Parvaz Mohammed Sultan, editor of NAFA, was shot dead by Hizbul Mujahideen at his Press Enclave office.

Other than increasing mass communication, councillors will also be advised to be polite in their behaviour and words, be proactive to help civic amenities reach every household, deal with problems of drinking water, prevent dengue and other vector-borne diseases and to create against usage of plastic. The leadership believes that without people’s participation most of these work would not be possible and thus a solid connect needs to be created with them and councillors who are considered to be the face of the government at the grassroot level. There have been several complaints against many councillors of rude behaviour or involving in heated arguments at public places. These have won them an ill-reputation and people of his or her constituency tend to avoid interactions with such persons. Corruption allegations have cropped up against many councillors. Such complaints are often submitted to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at her Nabanna or residence address. On June 21, Mamata will meet elected public representatives in the panchayat election at an event at Netaji Indoor Stadium to draw a roadmap regarding rural development. Also readBJP targets South Kolkata LS seat, Amit Shah challenges Mamata on her own turf Sources said that Mamata doesn’t want to leave any scope of negativity in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and she believes if the organisation is strengthened from the grassroot level, the work for state-level leaders would be a lot easier in helping the party to sail through the Lok Sabha polls.

Shujaat Bukhari: Killing of Kashmir journalist shakes India

Shujaat Bukhari’s death causes anguish across India where he was seen as a rare voice of moderation.

On Day 5 of waiting for L-G, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal once again writes to PM Modi over IAS officer strike

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today wrote a fresh letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking his intervention to end the IAS officers’ “strike” even as he hit out at his detractors, saying the sit-in was “not for personal gains” but for greater good of the people of Delhi.Kejriwal, in a video message today on the fifth day of the sit-in, he and his ministers are holding at the L-G office here, also attacked the BJP, alleging the bureaucrats’ strike was to “throw roadblocks” in the working of the AAP government.”I have told the LG and (deputy chief minister) Manish Sisodia wrote a letter to him (Anil Baijal) yesterday and even sent a message on WhatsApp. But, no response from his side. We got no response to the letter I wrote to the PM. So, today again I wrote to the prime minister,” he said. Also readDelhi High Court to hear on Monday plea against CM Arvind Kejriwal’s strikeThe latest letter by Kejriwal was in response to an invite to attend a meeting of NITI Aayog on Sunday.”I have asked the PM, if in his meetings officers don’t show up, will he be able to run the government for a day? Then why have you allowed the strike of officers in Delhi. It is not good to bother people of Delhi,” Kejriwal said. Also readCM Arvind Kejriwal urges PM Narendra Modi to intervene to end IAS officers’ strikeKejriwal yesterday had written to Modi, seeking his intervention to end the strike, claiming that Lt Governor Anil Baijal was doing “nothing” to end the impasse.A team of doctors yesterday conducted a health check-up of Kejriwal’s deputy Sisodia and health minister Satyendar Jain at the L-G office, who are on indefinite hunger strike to press for their demands. Also readCM Arvind Kejriwal urges PM Narendra Modi to intervene to end IAS officers’ strikeKejriwal said in his fresh letter to Modi, he has reiterated the demands. The AAP government has sought that the L-G direct the IAS officers to end their “strike” and act against those who have struck work. They also want the L-G to approve the proposal for doorstep delivery of ration.”I have again asked him (PM) to do something. It is not alright to have this strike be allowed. So, on Sunday, will go to the PM’s residence, lot of people of Delhi will go to his residence and appeal to him to have the strike cancelled,” he said.Kejriwal hoped that the prime minister will ensure that the “strike” ends.”If not, then after Sunday we will be go to every household. Our workers will reach out to 10 lakh households in the city and collect signatures on a letter on this obstruction to Delhi government work and on the issue of full statehood to Delhi. These 10 lakh families will then agitate for full statehood and against this strike of IAS officers,” he claimed. The AAP chief in his video appeal also asked if there was one person who would say that the strike by officers was legitimate.”After meeting him on Monday evening, I had hoped that the L-G would say he had ordered end of the strike and ask us to go back home. I am surprised that it is the fifth day an he (Baijal) is not wiling to have it ended,” Kejriwal alleged. But, what is more astonishing is that some BJP leaders are sitting in protest to support the strike of officers, he said.”BJP has been ruling for 15 years in MP, in Gujarat for 25-30 years, in Chhattisgarh for 10 years. Since AAP governemnt had done so much work in education, health, power and water departments, people in those (BJP-ruled) states are now asking questions on development issue and they are finding it difficult to answer,” Kejriwal said.”Since they can’t do it in their states, so obstructions are being thrown in the working of the Kejriwal government, so the strike,” he alleged.Hitting out at his detractors, who have questioned the motive behind the sit-in, he said, “I am not here for personal gains, and we are not having fun here.” “Some TV channels are labelling our protest as ‘AC-sofa ka dharna’. I want to ask, ‘Am I here for myself or to get jobs for my children? Is it for my own work. Is it easy to sleep on sofas? “We are here so that problems in opening of new schools, moholla clinics and getting rations can be removed… People are asking about the pollution level.”Every 15 days, we used to have review meetings. The environment secretary has not been attending meeting of the environment minister in the last four months. If he doesn’t come, how should we work,” he said.
