Delhi: Woman’s Facebook post accusing hospitals of ‘medical kidnapping’ gathers support

A Delhi woman has accused two private hospitals, one in the National Capital, of medical kidnapping and overcharging, on social media. The woman’s Facebook post, published late last week, went viral and encouraged several people to share their bad experiences with the private hospitals across the country.Parul Bhasin Verma, currently living at Atlanta in the USA, created a furour with her post accusing Yashoda Hospital at Secunderabad in Telangana and BL Kapoor Hospital in Delhi, for keeping her mother in the ICU for over 100 days costing the family more than Rs 1.2 crore. Verma’s mother, a liver cirrhosis patient, succumbed to multiple organ failure in May.”I have no other option now but go public with this information so that an appropriate action can be taken against these so-called hospitals, established to help the ailing members of our society, and no other family goes through the horror that we have experienced for over four months,” said Verma in her post, giving day-to-day details on the family’s ordeal.Verma’s post shared the details starting from January 2, 2018, when her mother was first diagnosed with the illness. Ten days later, the family received a call from a woman named Jyotsna Verma, giving details of an available liver in Hyderabad. The woman charged Rs 1 lakh for the information and the liver cost the family Rs 23 lakh, while the treatment cost at both hospitals was Rs 1 lakh per day. After 20 days, the woman underwent a successful liver transplant. However, three days later on February 8, she was put on a ventilator due to lung infection and remained on it for around 30 days.”I am really glad to see how all of you are supporting me. During these past 24 hours, I have received messages and comments from numerous individuals sharing their stories about how their families were tortured by this huge-money making “Health shops” and went through similar horror. It is very disheartening to see that such a noble and respectable profession has been corrupted by greed. If this has happened to many of us, then I think that there is a need for change. I request you to please come forward and share your story under the hashtag (#medicalkidnapping) so that the authorities can no longer ignore the issue. We may be weak individually but together we are stronger, (sic)” wrote Verma in another post.Denying all the accusations, BL Kapoor Hospital said that the woman was too ill to be saved.”It is unfortunate that in situations of bereavement facts gets obscured by voices of public empathy. Mrs. Sarita Bhasin was admitted to the ICU on April 7, 2018, for a period of 30 days. Her total in-patient bill for this was Rs 15.79 lakh. The patient’s family has only paid Rs 1.99 lakh and they also brought medicines from outside,” said a statement issued by the hospital.

"Don’t peddle drugs, smuggle gold as it’s bailable offence"- Bizarre advice from Rajasthan MLA

Bilara MLA Arjun Lal Garg has an advice to the Dewasi community: Stop peddling drugs, it is a non-bailable offence. Go for gold, where bail is easily obtainable. The advice came from the lawmaker while addressing a gathering of the Dewasi community. A purported video clip of the MLA addressing the gathering where he made the alleged remarks has gone viral. Referring to the problem of drug addiction and peddling, Garg said he had put a question in the assembly asking as to how many prisoners were lodged in the Jodhpur jail as an accused under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 Act.Let me tell you truly that the Dewasi community broke the record of Bishnois in drug peddling, Garg purportedly tells the gathering. He, however, could not be contacted for his comment. Sources said that Garg left for Ladakh for a leisure tour. He began with a suggestion to stay away from all the evil practices and called upon the gathering to get rid of drug addiction. He told the people that the young generation was getting spoilt due to drug addiction. He then advised them to do deal in gold, saying in case of illegal dealing in the yellow metal the bail was easily obtainable. If you wanted to do some 2 no. (illegal) business, do the business of gold. Prices of both are the same but it was safer to do gold business than drug , Garg purportedly said. Addressing the senior persons of the community, he asked them to take a pledge that they would not do drug business but the gold business. The address was made by the MLA at a consecration ceremony of a temple in village Jaitawas of Biara on May 7, where seers and public representatives were present in large numbers. The video of Garg addressing the gathering there went viral on Wednesday. He went on to add that it would be a “matter of pride” if someone was caught with gold rather than with drugs.Sukhdev Dewasi. District Secretary of Raika Mahasabha condemned this suggestion of Garg. It was not acceptable that largest number of prisoners in Jodhpur Jail are from Dewasi community. Also, any smuggling was a crime and could not be allowed, he said.

Sitaji was born from earthern pot, concept similar to test tube baby existed during Ramayana: UP Deputy CM

UP Deputy CM Dinesh Sharma has again stirred the pot by making controversial remark regarding prevelance of concept of test tube baby during Ramayana. Speaking at a function, ANI quoted Dinesh Sharma as saying, ” People say Sita ji was born from an earthen pot, which means at the time of Ramayana, a concept similar to test tube baby must have existed”. He also managed to draw parallel between journalism and Sanjaya relaying information to blind king Dhritarashtra. Sharma said, ” Today, live telecast is being done, but I think a similar technology was present at the time of Mahabharata, when Sanjay presented a ‘live telecast’ of the battle of Mahabharata to Dhritarashtra”. Couple of days back in an event organised to mark Hindi Journalism Day’, minister had spoken about this in detail. He said the mythological character, Sanjaya, sitting at Hastinapur, narrated a bird’s eye view of the war of Mahabharata, to Dhritarashtra. Yeh live telecast nahi to aur kya hai (if it is not live telecast, then what is it ?),” Sharma asked. The BJP minister also equated another character, Narada, with the present-day Google. “Your Google has started now, but our Google started long time back. ‘Narad Muni’ was the epitome of information. He could reach anywhere and transfer a message from one place to another by saying ‘Narayana’ three times,” he said. The BJP leaders have courted controversy by claiming that advance medical procedures like cataract, plastic surgery, even the gravitation theory, nuclear tests and the internet, have all started during ancient times. SC stays NGT order on pond renovation in Govardhan’s Braj area

The Supreme Court today stayed the operation of a National Green Tribunal (NGT) order for the demolition of ponds renovated by an NGO in the Braj area of Uttar Pradesh’s pilgrimage town Govardhan.A vacation bench of Justices L Nageswara Rao and MM Shantanagoudar considered the appeal of the NGO, Braj Foundation, and stayed the NGT order on demolition.Senior advocate A M Singhvi, appearing for the NGO, said an order issued in public interest cannot be “an anti-public order”.”… the highest allegation against me (NGO) is that I did not follow the procedure while undertaking the renovation work of the ponds,” he said. Now the NGT has ordered the demolition of these renovated ponds which is against the public interest, he added.”This is the wrong way of doing the right thing,” Singhvi said, seeking a stay on the NGT order. The NGT has passed several orders on a petition alleging that renovation work has been done without following due procedure in the Govardhan area. The NGO has challenged the NGT’s May 24 order which had junked its plea to continue the work and had stated that the renovation project be taken up by the government. No “private individual, organisation, NGO or any other body” should undertake the work of preservation and restoration of water bodies, the tribunal had said.Due to the NGT order, the local authorities stayed the restoration work being undertaken by the foundation at Sankarshan Kund in Anyor and Rudra Kund in Jatipura, the NGO has said.

UP: Four ex-CMs getting ready to leave official bungalows after SC order

Four former Uttar Pradesh chief ministers are getting ready to leave their official bungalows with the Supreme Court deadline ending this weekend. The top court had on May 7 held that former chief ministers of Uttar Pradesh cannot retain government accommodation after demitting office. The estate department had issued notices to six former chief ministers – Narayan Dutt Tiwari, Mulayam Singh Yadav, Kalyan Singh, Mayawati, Rajnath Singh and Akhilesh Yadav – to vacate their official bungalows in compliance with SC the order. The four former chief ministers, except for Tiwari and BSP supremo Mayawati, appear to be leaving their bungalows. While Tiwari is ill, his wife Ujjwala Tiwari has sought more time from the estate department, pleading that her husband was in the “last stages” of his life.Controversy has arisen over Mayawati’s claim that the 13 A Mall Avenue bungalow was party founder Kanshi Ram’s memorial. The estate department has rejected Mayawati’s claim that the 13 A Mall Avenue is Kanshi Ram’s memorial, while claiming that the 6 Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg residence, which she had vacated, was under her illegal possession .13A Mall Avenue was allotted to Mayawati in capacity as former CM while 6 Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg bunglow was under her illegal possession. She has to vacate Mall Avenue residence as per the SC order, a senior estate department official told PTI.Claiming compliance with the SC order, Mayawati had last week vacated the bungalow on 6, Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg which, the BSP claimed, was allotted to her as former CM.The BSP appeared to suggest that the notice Mayawati got is for the wrong bungalow. The UP government notice asked Mayawati to vacate 13A, Mall Avenue, and not the bungalow on Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg, which they claim was actually allotted to her as a former chief minister,” BSP said.Last week, a BSP delegation met Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, claiming that the Mall Avenue bungalow was converted into a Kanshi Ram memorial in 2011, and Mayawati occupied only two rooms in it.On May 21, after it had received the vacation notice, the BSP also installed a board at that bungalow, terming it ‘Shri Kanshi Ram Ji Yadgar Vishram Sthal’.While former chief minister Tiwari has not yet vacated his bungalow on the Mall Avenue, a board reading ‘Pandit Narain Dutt Tiwari Sarvjan Vikas Foundation’ has been fixed outside it in an apparent bid to save it.No other communication has been received from Tiwari, an estate department officer said. With barely a day left for the expiry of deadline to former Uttar Pradesh chief ministers to vacate their official bungalows, the other former CMs are leaving their official houses.Belongings of former UP chief ministers Akhilesh Yadav and Mulayam Singh Yadav were seen being taken out from their official residences at 4 and 5 Vikramaditya Marg. However, it is still unclear as to where will they exactly move. Both Akhileshji and ‘netaji’ (Mulayam) will be leaving the accommodation with the notice period, SP spokesperson Rajendra Chowdhury said.Akhilesh Ydav has asked the estate department to allot him two rooms in the VVIP guest house from where he can move till the shifting ends, a SP office bearer said. “The (estate department’s) notice period is ending on June 3. We cannot extend the period. As of now, former CMs — Kalyan Singh and Rajnath Singh — have given information of vacating their accommodations. We hope others will follow,” Estate Officer Yogesh Shukla told PTI.They currently occupy prime government properties in the high-security VVIP zone in Lucknow. While Mulayam Singh Yadav and Akhilesh Yadav occupy bungalows on the posh Vikramaditya Marg, Mayawati and Tiwari reside in the official bungalow on Mall Avenue. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh’s bungalow is at 4, Kalidas Marg, just next to the residence of the chief minister. While Rajnath Singh, who is also the local MP, has shifted to his residence on 200 square metre plot at 3/206 Vipul Khand in Gomti Nagar, Rajasthan Govenor Kalyan Singh’s belongings have been moved to the official bungalow of his grandson Sandeep Singh, who is a minister in the Yogi Adityanath government.”You find a house for me. I will build a house on the Vikramaditya Marg behind the CM’s residence, but it will take time,” Akhilesh Yadav told reporters recently when asked to comment on the issue.SP treasurer and Rajya Sabha MP, Sanjay Seth, who is a known builder, is helping Akhilesh Yadav and Mulayam Singh Yadav to find and settle in new accommodations, SP sources said. The Supreme Court’s order came on a public interest litigation filed by NGO Lok Prahari following an amendment passed by the UP Assembly which allowed all the former chief ministers to occupy government bungalows for lifetime. The apex court had struck down the amendment to the legislation which allowed them to retain government accommodation even after demitting office. The bench had said the amendment was “arbitrary, discriminatory” and violated the concept of equality and added that once such persons demit public office, there is nothing to distinguish them from the common man.The NGO had challenged the amendment made by the erstwhile Akhilesh Yadav government to the UP ministers (Salaries, Allowances and Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 1981.

Uttarakhand: ADG denies Sikh cop who saved Muslim youth from mob received threats

A senior Uttarakhand police official today dismissed the media reports that said Sub-Inspector Gagandeep Singh, who recently saved a Muslim youth from an angry mob in Ramnagar, had gone on leave as he was receiving death threats.”He has not received any threats. His going on leave has nothing to do with the Ramnagar episode. Taking leave is a routine thing. He will be back on duty on June 2,” ADG law and order Ashok Kumar said.A section of news media had reported that Singh had taken leave as he was receiving death threats after he saved a Muslim youth from an angry mob which had spotted him with a Hindu girl at a temple in Ramnagar in Nainital district.”When a policeman saves someone in trouble he only does his duty no matter which religion or community the person in distress belongs to,” the ADG said, adding Singh did exactly that.Nainital SSP Janmejay Khanduri too refuted the media reports last night.

‘Utar Gayi Patri Se Rail’: UP BJP MLA Shyam Prakash targets Yogi Adityanath after bypoll defeat

Targetting Yogi Adityanath after Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s defeat in Kairana and Noorpur seats in Uttar Pradesh, party MLA from Hardoi has written a poem on Facebook, saying that the chief minister has become helpless.”Officers are corrupt. Farmers aren’t happy with the government. There are several reasons behind BJP’s loss,” Shyam Prakash told ANI.However, he said that he has nothing against the government and officers are at fault. “Corruption, as compared to the last govt is on a rise. That’s the reason of my resentment.”In a poem posted on Facebook, which has been roughly translated, the MLA said:After Gorakhpur and Phulpur now we are sad over Kairana, Noorpur defeatAlso readKairana Bypoll: Rahul Gandhi, Mayawati, Akhilesh Yadav and Lalu Pasad Yadav wither Lotus► मोदी नाम से पा गए राज। कर न सके जनता मन काज।।With the help of Modi wave, you captured power, but couldn’t capture people’s heartAlso readTakeaways from bypolls 2018: Challenges for the united opposition, BJP’s hunt for the big narrative and more► संघ,संगठन हाथ लगाम। मुख्यमंत्री भी असहाय।।Because your reins are in the hands of Sangh, even your chief minister becomes helpless► जनता और विधायक त्रस्त। अधिकारी,अध्यक्ष भी भ्रष्ट।।Officers are corrupt, therefore, public and legislators are frustrated► उतर गई पटरी से रेल। फेल हुआ, अधिकारी राज।।The government has gone off-track and the governance has failed► समझदार को है ये इशारा। आगे है अधिकार तुम्हारा।।Those who are clever can take the hint (sic)From Gorakhpur and Phulpur in the east to Kairana in the west, the ruling BJP has let another Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh slip away to the opposition in a bypoll, the result of which was declared on Thursday. The Kairana outcome coupled with the result of the assembly bye-election in nearby Noorpur sent out a message barely months ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections that opposition unity can demolish the BJP, which had won 73 of the 80 UP Lok Sabha seats along with its ally in 2014.In Kairana, the joint opposition candidate, RLD’s Tabassum Hasan, romped home by a massive margin of over 44,600 votes defeating her nearest BJP rival Mriganka Singh, whose father’s death necessitated the bye-election in the politically crucially state. The BJP played down the outcome of the bypolls, saying people do not vote for a prime minister or chief minister in such elections but are driven by local issues and asserted that the party will win 2019 general polls. However, the party said it will analyse the cause of the defeat in one Lok Sabha seat each held by it in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra.(With agency inputs)

Takeaways from bypolls 2018: Challenges for the united opposition, BJP’s hunt for the big narrative and more

‘We are beating BJP in their own game’, was the gist of a beaming Akhilesh Yadav’s message after united Opposition’s candidate Tabbasum Hasan won the prestige fight in Kairana.Akhilesh still smarting from his Assembly poll humiliation last year, despite running a decent ship said that when they talked about development, media raved about how BJP understands getting social engineering right. And now it is coming back. Akhilesh was hinting at the united Opposition virtually making it impossible for BJP to win in Kairana (which has a significant percentage of Muslims and Jatavs). Also readKairana Bypoll: Rahul Gandhi, Mayawati, Akhilesh Yadav and Lalu Pasad Yadav wither LotusIn Noorpur Assembly too, SP candidate managed to wrest the seat from BJP. And, this was almost the case throughout the 11 states where by-polls were held. Opposition forces retaining their fortress and, in some instances, gaining at the NDA’s expense. Now, to make this as a test case for 2019 would be too hasty a call. But what it does say is that the next general election is anything but a done-deal, despite BJP dominating India’s political landscape for the last four years. While accepting that bypolls are not necessarily always reliable indicator of the future, certain inferences can be made based on the broad trends emerging from 4 Lok Sabha and 11 Assembly election results (10 bypolls and 1 assembly for RR Nagar in Bengaluru):Also readKairana victory is big slap on face of BJP, says Akhilesh YadavOpposition united is needed, but scaling it up is a challenge:The opposition would like to make the election a pitch battle between them and the BJP, slugging it out in 543 constituencies. That is to say that the opposition would hope for the general election to be sum-total of all the seats rather than making it a big narrative of personalities and ideas. It neither has any coherent ideological platform to fight the NDA government nor an acceptable PM candidate. The only glue of this much-vaunted opposition unity is the urge to ensure political relevancy at a time when the BJP juggernaut is sweeping across the country.Putting aside all moral ambiguities of ideology, the only goal is to defeat BJP. But even one-point agendas may not be as straightforward. In Kairana, RLD got votes transferred from SP and BSP. BSP cadres are dedicated and can be trusted to do so in the Lok Sabha. But will it happen the other way around? Will upper-caste voters of Congress and SP or even RLD, support a Dalit candidate propped up by BSP? Vote equations are not exactly arithmetic problems and are subject to many caveats.SP and Congress coming together couldn’t make a dent in BJP’s winning strategy in 2017. However, the 20% odd vote BSP has can ensure that BJP can be wiped off from Uttar Pradesh map if the united opposition clicks. It can be the state which seals BJP’s fate in 2019. But a lot would depend on how seat-sharing gets on, how well the cadres support each other on the ground and how the parties handle leaders who would be upset after being denied tickets?Mayawati has already indicated that she would be willing to pull the plug if BSP doesn’t get a fair deal. So, united Opposition will have a different ball game coming from heightened expectations in 2019.Congress needs to be flexible:Congress showed lot of prudence and understanding in these bypolls by allowing their allies to take centre stage. The result is there for everyone to see. From Uttar Pradesh to Bihar, Jharkhand to Maharashtra, UPA allies have won. For Congress, 2019 will be about looking at the bigger picture and play the supporting game wherever needed abdicating any ego they have of being the ‘natural party to govern’.Sometimes to score, playing from the flanks is also effective than just missing chances inside the box. Rahul Gandhi needs to act as an interlocutor to intervene wherever seat sharing talks would get stuck. If Congress is truly serious about a united Opposition coalition, it needs to get BSP on onboard in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, where Mayawati’s party has pockets of influence. Surveys are showing Congress ahead in both states. An alliance with BSP can effectively bury BJP in both states. In 2019, Congress has to look at the bigger picture, even if that implies lesser odds of Rahul Gandhi becoming PM.NDA struggling in Bihar and Jharkhand? When Nitish Kumar ditched RJD to get back in the NDA fold, most believed that Bihar is locked for 2019. Between BJP and JD(U), they commanded well over 40% of votes, which was supposed to be a handful against RJD and Congress. Well not quite, as successive bypolls have shown. RJD under Tejashwi Yadav has got a new lease of life, a sympathy wave from father Lalu’s prosecution. His dabbang style of conversation, taunting Nitish chacha is echoing with the voters. RJD has now won three byelections in row, including in Jokihat, where the party managed to flip the seat from JD(U).Nitish, once the secular messiah, runs the risk of alienating his Muslim vote base by aligning with BJP. He knows that, and yet chose to join, thinking that the pros would be more than the cons. While the jury is still out on it, it can be said that RJD is certainly not giving up without a fight. While all eyes are on UP, Bihar actually may become a sleeper hit for UPA in 2019. NDA hopes for a clean sweep from Bihar, but that dream looks quite unrealistic right now.In Jharkhand, Shibu Soren’s JMM has retained both the seats. Ruling BJP has come third in Gomia. This should be worrying bells for first non-tribal CM of the state, Raghubar Das. Ruling parties are expected to win bypolls and certainly not come third. Jharkhand has been voting saffron in the last few polls but clearly JMM and Congress alliance maintains a strong base. In 2019, every seat will matter, and BJP would be desperate to repeat or better its 2014 performance of winning 12 out of 14 seats.Despite Palghar win, Amit Shah has ‘maha’ problem:One can’t help but feel a bit sorry for Shiv Sena. They are stuck between the rock and the hard place. Sena doesn’t exactly have the credentials of being an operator in the ‘secular’ brigade, yet it is finding to very difficult to be part of the NDA regime. The primary reason is that Sena fears the risk of permanently becoming a junior partner in the Maha alliance. It already is the junior partner but is willing to reconcile to the truth. Its only calling card is that BJP has much more to lose if the alliance falls through. How exactly Amit Shah manages to convince Uddhav Thackeray will probably determine the fate of 48 Lok Sabha seats of Maharashtra. As Palghar showed, BJP is still the party to beat where the opposition is split. But in Bhandara- Gondiya, NCP managed to wrest the seat from BJP. Five out of six assembly segments in LS are held by BJP currently. Thus, this seat getting flipped shows NCP is back in contention in the Vidarbha region, where local boy CM Fadnavis has considerable clout.Status quo in Punjab, Kerala and BengalAs expected, TMC scaled up its victory margin in Maheshtala, in Bengal. Adhering to the trends of past elections, BJP emerged second, though considerably lagging behind the ruling regime. With the dominance currently showed by TMC, the party can seriously hope of winning over 90% of the Lok Sabha seats in the state.Left may be a diminished force across the country, but it is still going strong in Kerala. CPI(M) managed to retain Chengannur, which is traditionally seen as tilting Congress. At the two-year mark, Pinarayi Vijayan government still seems to enjoy considerable goodwill among people.Captain Amarinder Singh too managed to ensure Congress wrest an assembly seat from SAD in Shahkot. The fact that AAP has become a virtually footnote in Punjab, should worry Arvind Kejriwal and he should be probably focusing about that rather than gloating about BJP’s poor performance.Modi – the saviour? All the aforementioned inferences point towards one common factor, BJP needs a Modi wave again to do an encore in 2019. But can lightning strike twice or simply can Modi sell his acche din slogan again? Or maybe he just needs to impress voters that he is the most credible face in the reckoning.Whatever it might be, BJP needs a big splash to counter the opposition’s brick-and-mortar approach. The opposition is looking to do attrition politics of wearing down BJP in every seats, whereas BJP would like to mount their campaign in a high canvass where they can win seats en masse in a Presidential style of election. Amit Shah’s panna pramukhs, RSS’ backing can all come as useful catalysts, but it needs to be PM Modi to do the heavy lifting. BJP needs to sweep in Hindi heart-land to harbour any chances of getting a majority government. Will Ayushmann Bharat be Modi’s trump card? Or is it Jan Dhan Account and Ujjwala scheme. Or will we get to hear about other clandestine dinner parties and references of Shamshaan- Kabaristhan. The opposition has showed their hands, it is now time for BJP to respond. Whatever it is, 2019 will be a fight to finish. We can’t wait for this party to start!

Rejections for RTE kids become a joke for Gujarat government

Frivolous reasons have emerged in state government’s list of rejected applications received for admissions under RTE Act.While the list contained many reasons including income certificate not valid, caste certificate not proper, wrong address proof, income proof of grandfather, etc, some drew the attention of experts. The phone is dead, parents do not agree, parents want state government school, income proof is of mother, etc were found to be frivolous. The rejection list was uploaded on the website. An expert working on the implementation of RTE said, “How can the state government know whether parents want state government school or not? How do they care if the phone is switched off? This does not relate to the admission.”Round one of the admissions revealed a shocking development as nearly 32,000 seats across the state remained vacant. While this year, the state government had increased the seats by 75%, of the 1,25,729 applications approved by the District Primary Education Officer (DPEO), only 80,199 got admissions. In April, the state government had announced that they had a target of 1,05,000 seats across the state for RTE admissions as against 60,000 last year. However, with round 1 having only 80,199 admissions, the situation seemed worrisome.Gulmoin Khokhar, convenor, Zubeida Seva Trust, which has been working on RTE since years said, “Many parents are clueless about why their application was rejected. Those who have got admissions are not happy and either are seeking transfer of school or have decided to withdraw admissions. This time, many parents faced rejection due to confusion in BPL card too. While parents have BPL card, very less people feature in the score below 20 and no one knows how to obtain that score.”Also, many schools are charging fees and harassing parents when they went to submit documents, Khokar added. State education minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama said: “For fake admissions, we will be filing police complaints against parents. We have rejected many applications based on documents. If documents are not proper, no one can get admission.”

Noida: New U-turn on Dadri Road garners mixed reactions

The construction work of a U-turn in front of the upscale Sector-15 A on the Dadri main road is almost complete. According to the Noida Authority, it will ease the traffic congestion in the vicinity, providing respite to people travelling towards Delhi.According to the Authority, the construction work has amounted to an estimated Rs 35 lakh and it is expected to be open for public use by Saturday.Union minister, Mahesh Sharma, had launched it in the presence of top officials of the Noida Authority. However, experts have opined that the move will not ease the existing problem of traffic congestion for commuters coming from Greater Noida or DND flyway, who head towards different sectors of Noida, Mayur Vihar and other areas of East Delhi. When the U-turn will be made available to the public, the two traffic signals operating for residents of Sector-15 A, to turn right and enter their sector, will be closed. However, daily commuters are not in favour of this U-turn, saying that it will create a bigger bottleneck for people travelling straight.Dhiraj Kumar, a daily commuter, said, “During peak hours, this will also create a bottleneck for the people travelling straight. As the vehicles move at a fast pace on this stretch, the chances of an accident will also increase.”Further, residents of Sector 15 A would have to travel an extra kilometre to take a U-turn from the intersection between Sector- 15 A and Sector- 14 A. This intersection will then witness bigger bottleneck in peak hours as the road has not been expanded. However, Rajesh Khanna, RWA Secretary of Sector-15 A, said that the U-turn will make it easy for people proceeding to Delhi.TO BE OPENED ON SATURDAYThe construction work has amounted to an estimated Rs 35 lakh and it is expected to be open for public use by Saturday. Union minister, Mahesh Sharma, had launched it with other top officials.

CIDCO dumps debris in pond in spite of rebuke, residents fume

Residents from Kharghar will soon be knocking the judiciary’s door to not just save but also revive a huge fresh water pond being reclaimed by CIDCO despite a rap by the Wetland Grievance Redressal Committee, appointed by the Bombay High Court.Local activist Nareshchandra Singh who is part of the Abhivyakti Group said that the water body, located between Sectors 18 and 19, is now being levelled as part of a residential project being developed by CIDCO.”This pond has never dried in the past 15 years and is home to several migratory birds. It also provided various other ecological services. However, CIDCO has rampantly begun dumping debris to reclaim the pond. This is after we wrote to all the authourities including the Wetland Grievance Redressal Committee,” he said, adding that the pond, originally five hectare in area, has been reduced to a third of its size.Stalin D, project director of Vanashakti NGo and one of the members of the redressal committee and visited the site on Thursday, saw the debris being dumped in the pond.”Since citizens had registered a complaint, it was taken up during a meeting in April and CIDCO was instructed to stop it. But we were told that the dumping has been going on over the last several weeks. The issue was taken up again in the meeting on Thursday and I even visited the site to see the situation for myself. I saw the reclaimation work is going on in full swing,” he said, adding that he asked the officials to stop the work or face action.Local residents claimed that they have no faith in CIDCO, as they have been continuing the reclamation activity. “We will approach the court as the last resort to save this pond, and we have all the required satellite images and documents showing the whole five hectare pond,” said Singh. The CIDCO officials disputed the claim that the pond is a wetland.Milind Panditrao, Divisional Forest Officer, state mangrove cell, and member secretary of the committee, said that it has been decided to carry out a joint visit where CIDCO staff, the complainants as well as staff from the mangrove cell will visit the site.”It has to be verified if it is wetland or not. Our staff will take GPS coordinates and further investigations will be carried out. CIDCO officials will cordinate the joint visit,” he said.

Quit tobacco & help others quit too, says health minister Satyendar Jain

On the occasion of World No Tobacco Day, AAP Minister Satyendar Jain urged a crowd of 200 people to take a pledge against smoking and tobacco consumption.Speaking at an event, organised by the Delhi Government’s State Tobacco Control Cell in association with the World Health Organization (WHO) at the Central Park in Connaught Place, Jain said, “It is time for us to look down upon smoking and tobacco chewing and regard them as a menace to the society. This will make the people who consume tobacco hesitant about their acts.”Jain, the state health minister, has recently come under fire as the Central Bureau of Intelligence raided his residence and filed a graft case against him, on Wednesday, for allegedly tweaking the recruitments for a PWD creative team.”Our government has a campaign called ‘One for One’. It says that not only should we give up consumption of tobacco at the personal level immediately, but also try to make at least one other person to do the same,” explained Jain.Apart from Jain, the event was graced by few other dignitaries, including Dr. Jagdish Kaur, Regional Advisor of WHO and Dr. S. K. Arora, Additional Director, Health Services, Government of Delhi.Arora highlighted the harmful effects of tobacco consumption which may lead to a number of fatal diseases.”The fight against tobacco must be a united one. If we want to save our health as well as our environment, we must put an end to the use of this lethal substance”, Arora added.Several students from different schools across the city also attended the event.”If our Prime Minister can ban currency notes, he can very well put a ban on tobacco products too. It is an urgent matter as the threat from tobacco to public health and environment is increasing with each passing day,” said Prisha Goswami, a ninth-standard student of St. Marks Girls School in Paschim Vihar who performed during the event.”Personally, I learned about so many aspects related to tobacco consumption and various resultant diseases,” said Naim Khan, a visitor.

GSHSEB HSC Result 2018: Nearly 1.5L fail to clear English second language

Class 12 General stream declared by Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) has revealed a worrisome picture as nearly 1.5 lakh students of the 4 lakh that appeared failed to clear English second language. Also, the overall pass percentage also witnessed a marginal drop. The overall pass percentage this year has been recorded at 55.55% as against 56.82% last year. Among the district that recorded highest pass percentage, Dangs has recorded 77.32% whereas Chhota Udepur retained its position of being lowest at 31.54%. Everybody deserves to hear sounds of life: Australian cricketer Brett Lee

Former Australian cricketer Brett Lee has made a pitch for the Universal Newborn Hearing Screening (UNHS) programme and the need for early screening and intervention for children with profound hearing loss.Lee, on Thursday visited the JK Lon hospital in Jaipur, started spearheading the cause of hearing loss a few years ago after an accident temporarily impaired his four-year-old son’s hearing.“I want to use this platform to address the issue of profound hearing loss because I strongly believe that everybody deserves to hear the sounds of life,” said Lee. “No one in this world deserves to live in silence. Hearing loss is treatable and it should not prevent a person from leading a full and active life. UNHS can help identify and address hearing loss.” he added.According to the WHO, over 5 per cent of the world’s population or over 46.6 crore people in the world suffer from disabling hearing loss. Among these 3.4 crore are children. If relevant measures are not undertaken, over 90 crore people will have severe hearing loss by 2050. Yet, most people are unaware of the advanced treatment and options available. Commenting on the significance of screening, Dr. Mohnish Grover, Associate Professor, Department of Otorhinolaryngology (ENT), SMS Medical College, said: “A child’s language and speaking skills are developed in the first 2-3 years of life. Hearing loss can hinder growth and learning development in a child. UNHS can help recognise indications of hearing disability. That makes treatment possible in the crucial years of a child’s development – as early as 6 months. We also have innovative medical technologies like cochlear implants to restore hearing ability.”“Everyday, paediatrician see a number of conditions among their patients that could have been easily identified through new-born screening,” Dr. S Sitaraman, Head of Department, Paediatrics, JK Lon Hospital, said. “Universal New-born Hearing Screening (UNHS) should be made mandatory by all state governments, and we should fully support this campaign,” added Dr Grover. Fishermen rescue Whale Shark caught in their net during fishing

A video of a couple of fishermen ensuring a safe release of an endangered Whale Shark, which was stuck in the net during fishing, some 60 nautical miles away from Mumbai, is winning hearts of marine experts as well as conservationists.Whale Sharks are the largest fish in the ocean and are also called ‘Gentle Giants’ as they are extremely docile and plankton-eating. However, their population faces a huge threat due to rampant hunting for their meat, fin and oil.Ganesh Nakhawa Vice Chairman of Purse Seine Fishing Welfare Association said that the video was shared by one of the fishermen who was on board the boat. The fisherman, who is also a part of the welfare association, told Nakhawa about the whole experience.”The incident happened two weeks ago when this boat was out fishing for horse mackerel. The crew on the boat soon realised that the Whale Shark was stuck in the net. Since it was a purse seine net, they could lead the shark to the end of the net but ensured it was safely released,” he said.Even as the video went viral and several experts and conservationists demanded that the crew be felicitated, Nakhwa said that the crew members, who are from Uttar Pradesh and Ratnagiri, have gone back to their respective villages. The ships have been docked as it is the end of the fishing season. “We have all the names and details. They will be back after August 15 after which they can be felicitated,” Nakhawa added.Local fishermen said that for the koli community, the Whale Shark is revered and its sighting is considered very auspicious. “We call it Bairi Dev locally, and spotting it in the ocean means a good season, so there is no question of any one wanting to harm the whale. In fact, we have been educating our community and the fishermen under our association to ensure they save any mammal or such fish caught in the nets,” he said, adding that while many have been saved, this was the first time that a video was shot showing the efforts.N Vasudevan, Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (APCCF) Mangrove Cell said that these are one of the most beautiful sharks and are endangered species as they are mass hunted. However, a lot of programmes to protect them are being run across India. “They are known to breed in Gujarat. Malvan is where the second biggest congregation of these Whale Sharks are found. The effort by the fishermen is commendable,” he said.Marine enthusiast and one of the founders of Marine Life of Mumbai (MLOM), Pradip Patade, who even shared the video on social media, said that such videos also make sure that people know about the conservation work done by the fighing community.”I was very glad that BNHS Director Deepak Apte suggested that these fishermen who released the Whale Shark must be recognised. BNHS will do it. Such support and gestures will help strengthen the resolve of the fishing community to protect such endangered species and bring them closer to those working on marine conservation,” he said.GENTLE GIANTSWhale sharks are known to breed in Gujarat. Tobacco consumption up as steps to curb it go astray in state: Naveen Jain

Rajasthan was once known in the country for its stringent steps against the use of tobacco. But over the years laxity in the tobacco control programme has made all those efforts go astray.Naveen Jain, State Mission Director, National Health Mission (NHM), has raised serious questions over tobacco control efforts in the state and effective implementation of Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA).Speaking at a programme organised to mark the World No Tobacco Day on Thursday, Jain emphasised the need for vigorous efforts like decoy operation and sting operation on the line of PCPNDT act implementation and Daughters Are Precious (DAP) campaign for effective tobacco control and awareness in the state.“It has been experienced that people, responsible for tobacco control in the state, take it as a routine job with a preoccupied mindset that total tobacco control is impossible. This attitude has to change,” said Jain.“Despite of law and regulations, we can see that tobacco products are being displayed, sold and consumed near health and educational institutions and public places. What is more disappointing is that people responsibile for curbing this do not bother about it,” he added.Jain also put a question mark over the practicality of claim that number of tobacco users in the state has gone down. “Data presented by the tobacco control programme official claim that tobacco users have been reduced in the state. But it does not reflect in the economics of tobacco industry. No cigarette shop has been closed because of the loss and balance sheet of tobacco companies are booking profits,” said Jain.

Precarious existence: Bhiwadi first, Pali third on air pollution list

Industrial town of the state Bhiwadi is catching attention for all the wrong reasons. The city has recorded the most polluted air across the country with Air Quality Index of 367. Included among the national capital region, the town of Bhiwadi was way ahead in air pollution in comparison to the national capital. Delhi is the second most polluted city with an index value of 281. Bhiwadi is known to be among the dangerously polluted cities and its standing at the top is no surprise while Pali at number three has been comparatively a new entry. Pali with the index value of 283 shares the spot with Noida. The air quality index is based on real time data of more than 20 pollutant contaminating air of over 60 most polluted cities. In Bhiwadi it was Particulate Matter (PM) 10 which was recorded to be the biggest contaminant at a unit of 418 (ug/m3) while PM 2.5 was also comparatively higher at 88 (ug/m3). The safe range for PM 10 and PM 2.5 is considered to be 100 and 60 respectively. Pali had PM 2.5 as the biggest contamination factor at level of 143 and PM 10 at 324. The index accordingly rates air quality in Bhiwadi as ‘very poor’ while that of Pali is rated ‘poor’. “As per the index values, air that can lead to respiratory illness on prolonged exposure is rated as ‘very poor’ while ‘poor’ quality air is one that causes breathing discomfort,” says an official at the pollution control board.Other cities of the state to appear on the list includes Jaipur, Ajmer, Kota and Udaipur and were categorised as ‘moderate’ on the index. Even at moderate level, air pollution is known to cause breathing discomfort to people with respiratory issues.

Mamleshwar Pandey was caught red-handed by the RPF with illegally booked e-tickets of express trains.Considering that Pandey is a first-time offender, and should be given a chance to reform, a railway court in Vasai refrained from awarding him a jail sentence. The court argued that the sentence could turn him into a hardened criminal. He was, however, fined Rs 5,000 for committing the offence.Pandey confessed to his crime during the trial and pleaded for lesser punishment stating he is the sole bread winner of the family. The court accepted his argument and said: “Natural justice demands that every accused gets a chance to reform. Since the present accused has confessed to his crime, we are inclined to grant him one chance to reform. So, we won’t send him behind the bars; we’ll only impose a fine.”Police said, they had raided Pandey’s shop in Naigaon, in suburban Mumbai, based on a tip off. Finally, MHADA selects contractor for BDD chawl revamp

MHADA finally zeroed in on a contractor for redeveloping 122 BDD Chawl projects in Worli on Thursday. The authority had received bids from three consortium bidders for the Bombay Directorate (BDD) Chawl Redevelopment project. The tender was allotted to TATA Capacite.Redevelopment of BDD chawls is an ambitious state government project. The tenders were floated last July after three extensions and were finally allotted on Thursday.Tata Capacite had quoted Rs 49,617 per sq m for construction, while the second bidder Arabian Construction, and ACC, quoted Rs 53,810 per sq m for it. The third bidder couldn’t pass the security clearance of the central government as it involved a Chinese firm — China Construction engineering Corporation, along with IL&FS.Milind Mhaiskar, Vice President and CEO, MHADA, confirmed the details. There are 122 chawls in the area, which have 9,689 tenants. About Rs 10,700 crore might be required to develop this area. A 67-storey building will be constructed here, touted to be one of the biggest in the city. It will take 10 years to complete the project. The bidding process involved evaluating both technical and financial bids. A senior MHADA official said that the BDD chawl needs immediate revamp considering its condition. After tenders were floated last year, an eight-member committee comprising bureaucrats and experts scrutinised the technical bids to select the suitable design for the project. The technical bids focus on the plan of construction and the structural design of the project. The MHADA official added, “The committee conducted a final meeting to decide on the technical bids.”On the other hand, the financial bid involved costing of the materials to be provided by the bidders and the quotation for different quality of materials for different prices. The financial bids were also decided by the committee after which a final evaluation was conducted.Several developers have been eyeing this project as it would create a massive housing stock at a prime location in Mumbai. A fourth bidder had showed interest in the project after the Tata firm was finalised, but it couldn’t win the bid.BIDDING REVAMPThe financial bid involved costing of the materials to be provided by the bidders and the quotation for different quality of materials for different prices

In Tamil Nadu, 3 Dalits killed for sitting crossed-leg in front of upper caste Hindus

If you are a Dalit in Tamil Nadu, even a simple innocuous action like crossing your legs in public can cost your life. That is what happened in Kachanatham village in Sivaganga district in Southern Tamil Nadu where three Dalits were killed following a brutal attack by a group of upper caste Hindus. The group led an attack with deadly weapons on Monday night after being enraged by Dalits sitting crossed-leg in front of them. Two Dalits – K Arumugam (65) and A Shanmuganathan (31) – succumbed to injuries while being taken to the government hospitals on Monday night. Chandrasekar who was admitted to the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai died on Thursday morning taking the total death toll to three. The trouble started on May 26 when two Dalit youths – Theiventhiran and Prabakaran – sitting with their legs crossed outside Karuppasamy temple. Two upper caste Hindus who came there objected and abused Dalit youths for sitting crossing their legs in their presence which they claim to be a dishonour, A Kathir, executive director of Evidence, the Madurai-based NGO, said in his fact-finding report. He said as an argument broke out between the Dalit youths and caste Hindus, the Dalits warned them that they would file a police complaint if they continued to abuse them by calling their caste name. After the police booked Chandrakumar under Section 294 (b) (uttering obscene words) of the IPC, his son C. Suman (19) decided to take revenge. With the help of his friends from Avarankadu and nearby villages, he went to Kachanatham and carried out the brutal attack, the police said. After disconnecting the power, the group targeted the men, in particular, with weapons and damaged their houses and other properties. After protesting for three days by refusing to accept the bodies of the deceased from the morgue at the Rajaji hospital in Madurai, the victims family members and the villagers agreed to call off their protest following a meeting chaired by Sivaganga and Madurai district collectors who promised to consider their demands. In the meeting, it was decided that the sub-inspectors of Palayanur and Thiruppachethi police stations would be suspended while all the policemen posted in the Palayanur station would be shunted out as per the demand of the villagers. A police outpost would be set up at Kachanatham village. As far as their demand for increased compensation from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 20 lakh for the deceased family and Rs 10 lakh for the seriously injured, the district collectors promised to take up their demand with the government. “Even though Kanchanatham is village comprising 30 Dalit families and five caste Hindu families, the Dalits were facing various forms of untouchability. The Dalits together own 150 acres of agricultural land but they will not get water for their crops until the caste Hindus releases to them,” T Chellakannu, deputy general secretary of Tamil Nadu Untouchability Eradication Front, affiliated to CPI (M) said. He said that the local police has always sided with the caste Hindu and never took action on the complaints filed by Dalits. “If they had taken timely actions, three people would not have lost their lives,” he said.

Nipah Virus Alert: Delhi govt issues advisory, asks people to be careful in consuming fruits

In the wake of the spread of Nipah virus in Kerala, the Delhi government on Thursday issued an advisory asking people to be cautious, but said that no human infection from the deadly virus has been reported in the national capital. The government has asked people to “stop consumption of raw date palm sap” and take special precaution when it comes to consuming mangoes that have fallen off trees and lying under them this season. It is “not a major outbreak” of the disease and only a local occurrence, limited to a few districts in Kerala — Kozhikode and Malappuram, the advisory said.Available data suggests that “there is no need for the general public to be apprehensive about the safety of individuals and their family members,” the advisory said.”No human infection of the Nipah virus has been reported in Delhi till date,” it said.Meanwhile, the death toll due to Nipah virus in Kerala rose to 16 today.”Its is a zoonotic disease (spreads from animals to humans) and its transmission can happen through infected bats by their bite or indirectly by consuming fruits like mangoes or date palm sap contaminated by their saliva, close contact with infected pigs or patients of Nipah virus infection,” the Delhi government said. The illness commonly presents as brain fever. In some cases during early part of illness it may also present with fever with persistent cough and difficulty in breathing.”By and large there is no travel advisory. However unnecessary travel to the affected districts of Kerala can be avoided for time being,” the advisory said. The advisory has also asked people not to consume any fruit which are partially eaten or having a bite marks by bats or any other animal.People are also supposed to report to health care facility immediately if someone is having viral fever-like symptoms with neck rigidity. The advisory has also asked people to not go for self-medication.”Maintain respiratory hygiene (avoid spiting) and coughing etiquettes (use clean handkerchief). Wash hands with soap and water before and after meals, and after coming back from markets after buying fruits and vegetables.”Healthcare workers are advised to use full barrier personal protective equipment before examination of patients,” it said.

BJP moves on from bypolls heartbreak, says Modi factor will help it win 2019

The reverses in the by-poll results today have underlined the challenge that the BJP may face against a likely united opposition in the Lok Sabha elections, but its leaders asserted that national issues combined with the Modi factor will pave the way for its win in 2019.The BJP’s loss in Kairana Lok Sabha and Noorpur assembly by-elections to joint rival candidates following a similar drubbing in Gorakhpur and Phoolpur Lok Sabha by-polls has made it abundantly clear that it is at a numerical disadvantage to a combined opposition in a state key to its fortunes in the general elections. It had won 71 seats and its ally another two of the total 80 seats in the India’s politically most crucial state in 2014, but reaching near this feat will require a new round of consolidation of votes in its favour.BJP president Amit Shah had last week said that his party will work to get 50 per cent vote share in 2019 to quell the challenge from opposition parties if they unite. The party, however, played down its defeat in the by-polls. It could retain only one of the two Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra. Its spokesperson and Rajya Sabha MP G V L Narasimha Rao highlighted how the Modi factor has helped the party win in a spate of assembly elections in states, but in by-polls people are driven by local issues, castes and candidates, knowing well that results will not have any impact on governments in either at the centre or states.”The BJP has secured unusual and extraordinary mandate in four years of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rule. While Modi continues to swing election after election by his ever-growing popularity… in by-polls local issues, castes and candidates take precedence over national leadership,” he said.A party leader claimed that opposition parties will end up helping the BJP’s cause in 2019 by making it “Modi vs the rest” in the Lok Sabha election. The BJP is bound to benefit, he said, as it will be in a much better position to leverage national issues and its prime ministerial face to seek a fresh mandate against a “disjointed” opposition fighting without a face or any cohesive agenda. He said the BJP did well in three Lok Sabha elections in 1996, 1998 and then 1999 when its prime ministerial face Atal Vihari Bajpayee was at the centre of national polity and people gave the BJP-led NDA bigger mandate in one poll after another to put an end to the “unstable coalition politics”.”We are confident that a ragtag joint opposition having many leaders accused of corruption will not inspire confidence among the people, who will choose Modi over them in 2019,” he said.

AN-32 deal: Rahul Gandhi demands action from ‘chokidar’ Modi, defence ministry calls story ‘misleading’

At a time when the BJP is nursing the crushing defeat in the Lok Sabha and Assembly bypoll results, a story over alleged kickbacks received by the officials of Narendra Modi government in a military aircraft deal would add to its woes.A report published in The Indian Express on Thursday said that kickbacks to the tune of Rs 17.55 crore were paid for the procurement of spares of AN-32 military aircraft by India. The media report said Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau has sent a request to the Ministry of Home Affairs seeking legal assistance in its probe into the alleged kickbacks, besides help in identifying defence ministry officials who participated in the negotiations, signing and implementation of the deal.Congress president Rahul Gandhi took to Twitter and demanded action from PM Modi. ‘Ministry Of Defence, India (MODI) officials, accused of making millions of $’s in kickbacks via Dubai by Ukrainian Govt. in AN32 deal. Modi ji, as our self proclaimed chokidar, I urge you to take immediate action against your corrupt MODI officials (sic), he tweeted earlier in the day. So far, Union Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has not responded to the allegations directly. However, according to news agency ANI, the Ministry of Defence has termed the news story as ‘misleading’. ‘A misleading news item has appeared alleging kickbacks to Indian government officials through Global Marketing SP Ltd in contract for spares for AN-32 Aircraft. It’s informed that MoD or IAF has neither interacted or signed any agreement with them nor any such agreements witnessed,’ the defence ministry statement said. However, the Congress has upped its ante and said that Modi government must come out with a detailed explanation. “There seems to be trouble in paradise, the Ministry of Defence,” Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari saidat a press conference, adding that the contract for the AN-32 spares was signed in November 2014 during the tenure of the BJP-led NDA government.Tewari raised five questions over the defence deal and sought the reply of the government saying he hoped that it would “not sweep the matter under the carpet”.He asked whether it is a fact that the anti-corruption bureau of Ukraine sought legal assistance from the home ministry in February this year. The Congress leader said the government “misused” the confidentiality clause and hid behind it following allegations of wrongdoing in the Rafale deal.Tewari sought to know whether it is a fact that the terms of contract were not fulfilled and the ministry of defence signed a statement of completion which facilitated the transfer of the alleged illegal gratification.”This is actually the nub of the entire issue and the government must respond. What has been the response so far of the Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Defence to the request of the Ukrainian government?” he said. All the details such as whether any internal process has been initiated by the Ministry of Defence in the wake of the alleged scam should be made public, he said.”If this government believes in transparency and probity and if it abides by the slogan of ‘na khata hun, na khane deta hun’ ((we don’t take bribes nor let others to do so), then why have you been hiding these facts from the people. The moment the request came from the Ukrainian government it should have been put out in the public space,” he said. The former Union minister said, “This is an extremely serious issue and we would like the BJP government’s response from the highest levels.”Since the honourable defence ministry holds fort on all and sundry 24/7, we do hope she would take the time out to respond to something which pertains to her ministry,” he said.India signed an inter-governmental agreement with France in September last year for procurement of 36 Rafale fighter jets at a cost of around Rs 58,000 crore. The Congress recently raised several questions about the contract and accused the government of compromising national interest and security while promoting “crony capitalism” and causing a loss to the public exchequer. The government had refused to divulge the details of the deal, citing a confidentiality pact between India and France.

BJP loses Kairana prestige battle: ‘Jinnah hara, Ganna jeeta,’ quips RLD

Rashtriya Lok Dal’s Tabbasum Hasan won the prestige battle of Kairana and defeated BJP’s Mriganka Singh by 44,618 votes on Thursday.Reacting to the thumping victory in western Uttar Pradesh’s communally sensitive seat, RLD leader Jayant Chaudhary on Thursday said that the positive campaign undertaken by the party has yielded a positive outcome.”We spoke about sugarcane, unemployment and all the missing factors of central and state government. BJP’s entire campaign was negative. So at the end of the day, our positive campaign helped us, Jinnah hara, Ganna jeeta,” he told reporters.Earlier, BJP Kairana candidate Mriganka Singh accepted defeat and congratulated her opponent.”Many voters did vote for BJP, but with a lead of some thousand votes alliance has won. I would like to congratulate the candidate. The alliance has emerged strong and now we have to prepare better for future,” she told ANI.The Kairana seat had fallen vacant following the death of Mriganka’s father and BJP MP Hukum Singh. In a sharp criticism of the ruling part, the CPM said that BJP’s loss at its “laboratory of communal and hate politics”, Kairana, clearly shows that people did not accept the ruling party’s governance and its destruction of the unity and integrity of India.CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury added that he .feared that the loss in the bypolls would push the RSS-BJP to spread communal tension and create a divide between religious communities to consolidate the “Hindutva votebank” ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.BJP as of now has only managed to win Maharashtra’s Palghar bypoll by defeating Shiv Sena by 29572 votes. However, its ally in Nagaland, Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) is leading over Naga People’s Front (NPF) by 34, 669 votes.Meanwhile, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) won by over 27,000 votes from Maharashtra’s Bhandara-Gondiya bypoll Lok Sabha constituency by defeating BJP.

Karnataka: CBI raids Congress leader DK Shivakumar’s residences and office of associates

In a pre-dawn swoop, the CBI on Thursday raided residences and an office of some persons linked to senior Congress leader DK Shivakumar at five places in Bengaluru, Kanakapura and Ramanagara on charges of illegally exchanging demonetised currency notes. The raids took a political hue with Shivakumar, an MLA, and his MP brother D K Suresh calling it a “vindictive act” by the BJP-led government at the centre to frame them. The CBI said the raids were carried out on charges that Corporation Bank chief manager B Prakash at Ramanagara, in connivance with ‘unknown others’, had illegally exchanged Rs 10 lakh of scrapped currency notices with new ones on November 14, 2016.Prakash and others are also accused of trying to cover up this act by fabricating requisition slips.”Searches are being conducted at five places in Bengaluru, Kanakapura and Ramanagara which includes Election Cell, Kanakapura and an office at Ramanagara and three residences of the election cell in-charge Shivananda, election cell clerk Nanjappa and one Padmanabaiah.” Padmanabaiah had allegedly exchanged the SBN notes in the bank,” the CBI said in a press release. The CBI stated that a case against Prakash and officials of Corporation Bank and others had been registered on April 7, 2017.Suresh said search warrants had been issued by a special CBI court against 11 people, including him, but expressed ignorance about the charges. He alleged the central government was targeting him and his brother Shivakumar.”Main targets are me and my brother DKS and nobody else. By targeting others, they are trying to reach us. I have no idea who these 11 people are,” said Suresh. He said he was ready for legal recourse against the “vindictive action”.”We have been targeted by BJP, Amit Shah and Narendra Modi. They have given a clear instruction to the government of India officials, like CBI, I-T and ED. Some sources told us that they all had a meeting three-four weeks ago. Through some messengers we got the information,” Suresh said.Shivakumar, who was instrumental in keeping the Congress MLAs together at a resort and hotel in the recent political drama in Karnataka against alleged poaching bid by the BJP to muster numbers, said he won’t succumb to any pressure.”If somebody thinks that they can force me and my family to bend before them by threatening us, we are not the ones who will succumb to their pressure. We are ready for any challenge. We had an inkling about these problems,” said Shivakumar.”Officials under the BJP rule should not forget this phase is not going to be permanent and nobody is immortal. Neither is anybody going to remain in power forever, nor your powers will be permanent. You have been given powers for a while. So do not act as a puppet in somebody’s hand to trouble others,” said Shivakumar.Meanwhile, former chief minister Siddaramaiah condemned the CBI raids, alleging that the Centre had been targeting Congress leaders but it will not succeed.

Jokihat Bypoll – People rewarding Nitish for distributing swords during Ram Navami: Tejashwi taunts Bihar CM

After massive win in Jokihat assembly bypoll, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav has slammed BJP and JD(U) regime. Tejashwi Yadav said politics of hate has lost in Bihar and people of Bihar has taught Nitish Kumar lesson for insulting mandate of people. RJD leader said that this is the third consecutive bypoll the party has won. He said that all sections of the society voted for the party and hence they managed to win, even though those are not their traditionally strong seats. Tejashwi Yadav said that despite investigative agencies trying to rattle Lalu Yadav and other leaders, RJD didn’t lose hope and fought the election valiantly to ensure victory. Tejashwi hailed opposition unity and mentioned SP, RLD win in Uttar Pradesh by-elections. Tejashwi said, ” The number of votes JDU got, is less than our victory margin. People of Bihar are continuing to avenge the uturn taken by Nitish Kumar”. Tejashwi slammed Nitish Kumar for frequently changing sides and said that if he has any moral conscience left, he should immediately resign from the post of CM. He also said Bihar CM distributed swords during Ram Navami, now he is getting reward from it, in an ironical comment. RJD candidate Shahnawaz Alam defeated JD(U) candidate Murshid Alam by over 41 thousand votes in the Jokihat byopoll. While Shahnawaz Alam of RJD so far got 76,002 votes, Murshid Alam of JD(U) polled 37913 votes. The resignation of JD(U) MLA Sarfaraz Alam, who quit the party earlier this year and got elected on an RJD ticket to the Lok Sabha from Araria, a seat held by his late father Mohammad Taslimuddin, necessitated the by-election.With PTI input

Young BJP worker hanged to death: TMC dismisses Amit Shah’s charges over college student’s murder

A BJP worker’s body was found hanging from a tree in Balarampur, West Bengal on Tuesday. Etched on Trilochan Mahato’s shirt was an ominous message, ” Now face the consequence of doing BJP at the age of 18″. Mahato’s family has lodged complaint against six people who had a tiff with him after panchayat poll results. His family has alleged that TMC workers have killed him. However, ruling party has denied all allegations. In the recently concluded panchayat elections, BJP did very well in Purulia district finishing close second to TMC. Particularly in Balarampur, BJP swept the area. Mahato was an active worker for BJP. The party not only won 7 panchayats in the area, it won Balarampur Panchayat Samiti and even made its debut in Zilla Parishad. The TMC Zilla Parisad President lost his own seat. Mahato was a third year History honours students in Balarampur college. He was missing from Tuesday evening. According to his elder brother, around 9 PM, Mahato called saying that some people have abducted him. He feared for his life and pleaded his brother to do something. Police used the call tower of the phone to first trace Trilochan Mahato’s cycle and later his body hanging from a tree. A note accompanying the death body said,”Doing election work for BJP at the age of 18 has become fatal for you. We wanted to do this since elections. Today you are finished”. Amit Shah tweeted to express condolence. In his tweets, Shah said the life of young BJP worker, Trilochan Mahato, was “taken under the state’s patronage” because his ideology was different from that of “state-sponsored goons”.”Deeply hurt by the brutal killing of our young karyakarta, Trilochan Mahato, in Balarampur, West Bengal. A young life full of possibilities was brutally taken under state’s patronage. He was hanged on a tree just because his ideology differed from that of state-sponsored goons,” Shah said on Twitter. He said, “The present TMC govt in West Bengal has surpassed the violent legacy of Communist rule. Entire BJP mourns this tragic loss & stands firmly with Trilochan Mahato’s family in this hour of grief. His sacrifice for organisation & ideology will not go in vain.”Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek is slated to visit Purulia on Thursday. BJP has alleged that Mahato was killed before Abhishek’s visit to give a message that Purulia will be free of opposition. TMC though have ridiculed all allegations. Local TMC has demanded a CID probe to find out the guilty. Senior TMC leader and Bengal Minister Patha Chatterjee dubbed Amit Shah’s words as ‘provocative’, ‘unthinkable’ and ‘laughable’. BJP has called Balarampur Bandh on Thursday. According to police, the murder was due to personal enmity. With PTI inputs

Pathankot court turned into fortress as Kathua rape-murder case trial begins

A thick security blanket was on Thursday thrown in around the four-storey judicial court complex in Pathankot and all necessary arrangements were done to ensure a smooth trial in the sensational Kathua rape and murder case. The case, involving the rape and murder of an 8-year-old girl from a nomadic community in Kathua district in January, was transferred by the Supreme Court from Jammu and Kashmir to Pathankot. The apex court, had on May 7, also directed day-to-day in-camera trial in the case. The eight persons arrested in the case were produced before the district and sessions judge in accordance with the directions of the Supreme Court. The court had asked the district and sessions judge at Pathankot to personally undertake the trial proceedings and not assign it to other session judges, stating that it would monitor the progress of trial in the case and no other courts should entertain any other plea related to the matter. The trial in the case will be held according to the provisions of Ranbir Penal Code, which is applicable in Jammu and Kashmir.Pathankot Bar Association president Reshpaul Thakur said this was for the first time such a high-profile case was to be heard in the court. The Punjab authorities have made elaborate security arrangements to ensure smooth trial in the case.A large number of policemen, including women personnel, have been deployed within and outside the court complex. The main entrance of the complex has been blocked for vehicles, including those belonging to the staffers, who were asked to park their vehicles in an adjacent complex.CCTV vans were also deployed in the court premises to keep an eye on trouble makers. The policemen were seen in riot gear, some armed with guns and most of them carrying batons and shields.Special security squads armed with mine detectors and sniffer dogs were doing the rounds to sanitise the complex, where the police have set up barricades outside the main door. All necessary arrangements are in place to ensure smooth trial in the case, a senior police officer supervising the security arrangements in and outside the court, told PTI.Officials said a police team along with staff of Kathua’s district and sessions judge will present the files of the case to the court here and request permission to translate the documents from Urdu to English. The Crime Branch had submitted a charge sheet in the case on April 9 before the Kathua court. The case came into the limelight after lawyers of the Kathua bar association reportedly tried to prevent the police from submitting the documents. According to the 15-page charge sheet, the eight-year-old girl, who was kidnapped on January 10 this year, was allegedly raped in captivity in a small village temple in Kathua district. She was kept sedated for four days before being bludgeoned to death. The abduction, rape and killing of the child was part of a carefully planned strategy to remove the minority nomadic community from the area, it said. It named eight persons, including temple custodian and alleged mastermind Sanji Ram, his son Vishal, special police officers Deepak Khajuria alias ‘Deepu’ and Surender Verma, and a juvenile. The others arrested in the case are the juvenile’s friend Parvesh Kumar alias Mannu as well as head constable Tilak Raj and sub-inspector Anand Dutta. The case became a bone of contention between the state government’s alliance partners PDP and BJP. The saffron party had to sack two of its ministers– Chowdhury Lal Singh and Chander Prakash Ganga– for participating in a rally of ‘Hindu Ekta Manch’ in support of the accused in the case.

Karnataka: CBI to raid 11 MLAs, claims Congress leader D Shivakumar

Senior Congress leader and Karnataka MLA DK Shivakumar on Thursday alleged that Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is going to raid 11 party MLAs including him.The Congress leader made the claim in an urgent press conference held at his Bangalore residence and said that the BJP is indulging in vendetta politics.”There is no question of bowing under any pressure. These politically motivated raids and the warrants have come from agencies that come under BJP’s control,” he alleged.Stating that this will not stop them from doing our party work, “We will always abide by the law of the land.”Shivakumar was as a key figure in keeping the party MLAs together before the trust vote of BJP’s Yeddyurappa government. The development comes amid hectic parleys between both Congress and JD(S) on cabinet expansion and portfolio allocation since Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy proved majority on the floor of the assembly on May 25, two days after his swearing-in on May 23.According to report, the two parties have not been able to arrive at a consensus on the allocation of key portfolios, most importantly Finance, which both Congress and JD(S) want in their kitty. However, to a question about reports that he was demanding power portfolio, Shivakumar termed it “false news.” Refuting reports about a tussle between him and JD(S)’ HD Revanna, son of former prime minister HD Deve Gowda, for the power ministry, he said, “no such demands or discussions, our party and that party (JDS) leaders will sit together and decide.”

RR Nagar Bypoll: Congress candidate Muniratna extends lead over BJP rival

The Congress was leading in the Rajarajeshwari Nagar assembly constituency in Bengaluru by a margin of over 32000 votes, where counting began this morning amid tight security, as per initial trends.Early trends showed that Congress’ Muniratna secured 16,581 votes, followed by BJP’s Tulsi Muniraju Gowda with 7,901 votes and JD(S) G H Ramachandra 3,606 votes. Muniratna later extended his lead over teh BJP candidate. About 54% out of the 4.71 lakh voters in the constituency had exercised their franchise on May 28.While assembly elections across the state were held on May 12, polling in Rajarajeshwari Nagar was conducted on May 28, as the Election Commission had deferred polling there following the voter ID controversy and various other irregularities.A major row erupted over electoral malpractices and seizure of nearly 10,000 voter ID cards from an apartment in the constituency, ahead of May 12 elections.Fourteen candidates were in the fray in Rajarajeshwari Nagar polls, including incumbent MLA in the dissolved assembly, Muniratna. While BJP has fielded Tulsi Muniraju Gowda, JD(S) candidate is G H Ramachandra, who had joined the party ahead of polls, quitting BJP.Muniratna is one of the accused in the case related to voter ID cards that were found in an apartment.Police has registered a case of election-related malpractices under relevant sections of the IPC besides offences under the People’s Representation Act against him and others.Rajarajeshwari Nagar became the first constituency to go for polls after Congress-JD(S) coalition government came to power in the state. In this election, both parties fought against each other as they failed to reach consensus regarding supporting one coalition candidate. Counting of votes for bypolls to 4 Lok Sabha seats: Possible takeaways

The counting of votes for 4 Lok Sabha and 10 assembly seats across 10 states, including politically crucial Kairana Parliamentary constituency in Uttar Pradesh, will begin at 8 am today. The polling in these 14 seats was held on May 28. This is one of the largest bypoll exercises in recent times in terms of numbers of seats up for polling. Besides Kairana, polling was being held for Palghar and Bhandara-Gondiya in Maharashtra and Nagaland Lok Sabha seats. The polling on Monday was marred with controversies with widespread failures of EVM-VVPAT machines. Repolling was conducted at 73 polling booths in Kairana Lok Sabha constituency and 49 booths in Bhandara-Gondia. Possible takeaways: KairanaThe elections in four Lok Sabha seats are being seen with keen interest as their results could be a trendsetter for the 2019 general elections. The most crucial of the bypolls is in Kairana which will test the opposition unity formula in Western Uttar Pradesh. The constituency fell vacant after the death of BJP MP Hukum Singh, whose daughter Mriganka Singh is fighting Rashtriya Lok Dal’s (RLD) Tabassum Hasan, a candidate supported by the Congress, Samajwadi Party, the Bahujan Samaj Party, Left parties and the AAP.After bypoll results in Gorakhpur and Phulpur earlier this year, the Kairana bye-election has become all the more important for the BJP. The outcome will show if the ruling BJP manages to break its losing streak this year or hands over a hat-trick to the opposition. The opposition, on the other hand, hopes to repeat its success in Gorakhpur and Phulpur bye-elections by consolidating the anti-BJP vote in Kairana. With nearly 17 lakh voters, Kairana has a significant number of Muslims, Jats and Dalit voters. The bypoll would be a test case of whether the united opposition can consolidate their votes. PalgharThe by-election on this scheduled tribes (ST)-reserved seat in Maharashtra was necessitated after the death of BJP’s Chintaman Wanga. The Shiv Sena, ruling BJP’s estranged ally, staged a coup by fielding the late MP’s son Srinivas to capture the sympathy vote. The BJP poached former Congress minister Rajendra Gavit. With the Bahujan Vikas Aghadi (BVA) led by Vasai-Virar strongman Hitendra Thakur fielding ex-MP Baliram Jadhav, Kiran Raja Gahla of the CPI-M and former five-term MP Damu Shingada (Congress), the contest has become a multi-cornered fight. However, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis have staked personal claim which has become a prestige battle for the two top leaders. On the last day of the campaigning, Thackeray released an audio clip, purportedly of Fadnavis asking BJP workers to use all possible means – ‘saam, daam, dand, bhed’ (negotiation, money, punishment and division) – to win the by-election.Bhandara-GondiaThe Bhandara-Gondia Lok Sabha seat was vacated after BJP MP Nana Patole resigned from the party to join the Congress. However, Patole, a leader of the powerful OBC Kunbi community, is not contesting the bypoll as the Congress has handed over the seat to its ally NCP. The NCP has fielded former BJP MLA Madhukar Kukde, against the BJP’s Hemant Patle, who belongs to the Powar community and is also a former legislator.NCP heavyweight Praful Patel, who was defeated by Patole in 2014, has a lot riding on the result. NagalandThe by-election on this lone Nagaland Parliamentary seat was necessitated after the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) leader Neiphiu Rio resigned in February to become the chief minister of Nagaland. The by-poll is a straight contest between ruling Peoples Democratic Alliance (PDA) candidate Tokheho Yepthomi and opposition Naga People’s Front (NPF) nominee C Apok Jamir who is being supported by the Congress. The result could forge a united Congress-NPF front in 2019 polls. EVM controversyAlthough a lot is on stake for the political parties in the bypolls to these 4 Lok Sabha seats, the election has also become a matter of prestige for the Election Commision following widespread complaints of faulty EVM-VVPAT machines and poll panel’s less than satisfactory answer. Such was the level of complaints that the commission had to order re-pollling in 73 polling stations in Kairana and 49 polling stations in Bhandara-Gondia. More than the number of complaints, the excuse given by poll body for the failure of machines was what surprised many. The Election Commission blamed the failure of VVPAT machines on heatwave. Sources in the poll panel said inept handling of VVPAT machines by the ground staff, especially when the temperature is high, led to their heating, resulting in their malfunctioning.Since many opposition parties have been raising the “EVEM tampering” issue, the malfunctioning on the day of bypoll gave them fresh ammunition. An unfavourable outcome would give these parties all more reasons to raise the EVM-tampering bogey.

World Tobacco Day: Cancer survivors share their experiences

Babu Lal Saini, a 54-year-old resident of Mansarovar colony of Jaipur started smoking in his teenage and after smoking for 20 long years, he got detected with throat cancer in 2005. He underwent surgery, chemotherapy and radiation for one year in a city hospital and due to the disease, he had to quit his job while his children had to take up mean jobs to support the family.Saini was among many cancer survivors present in the program organized at Bhagwan Mahaveer Cancer Hospital on the occasion of World No Tobacco Day. These survivors shared their experiences of how tobacco led to serious diseases. They also expressed that it is not only the patient who suffers but it is the whole family that bears the pain.“On an average, 2500 people in India are losing their battle against cancer every day and of the total cancer patients in India around 45% males and 17% females suffer from tobacco generated cancers,” Dr Nidhi Patni, HoD, Radiation Oncology at BMCHRC said.“As per data collected at BMCHRC in last 5 years, total 46,904 cancer patients were treated and an average 9,380 patients are admitted to the hospital annually. The most common cancer in these patients was head and neck cancer and tobacco was the main reason behind it,” Dr Nidhi added. As per established facts, annually around 70 lakh people die globally because of tobacco generated diseases, India shares 16% burden of these deaths.Dr Lalit Mohan Sharma, Medical Oncologist shared that, “Tobacco in any form, contains harmful chemicals which affects human DNA that leads to various cancers. People who consume chewable tobacco and smoke are more prone to mouth cancer.” “Most of the cases are reported at the last stage which leads to expensive treatment with minimum effect. In such cases, nothing much can be done and the patient suffers from acute pain,” Dr Naresh Ledwani, Senior Consultant, Surgical Oncology said. Losing battle“On an average, 2500 people in India are losing their battle against cancer every day and of the total cancer patients in India around 45% males and 17% females suffer from tobacco generated cancers,” Dr Nidhi Patni, HoD, Radiation Oncology at BMCHRC said.
