Singapore PM Lee Hsien Loong leads 40,000 devotees in Hindu temple reconsecration ceremony

For the first time since assuming office in 2004,Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong led some 40,000 devotees and four ministers at a 164-year-old Hindu temple’s reconsecration ceremony in Singapore, following the completion of its SGD 4.5 million restoration work.”This 164-year-old temple has been undergoing renovations for the last 1.5 years to prepare for its re-consecration, which takes place every 12 years,” the prime minister tweeted last night of the iconic Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple in the Little India precinct. After attending yesterday morning’s ceremony, Minister of Trade and Industry S Iswaran said the occasion reflected the diversity in Singapore community. The temple – one of the oldest in Singapore – was re-sanctified in a consecration ceremony called the “Maha Samprokshanam”, which would be followed by a period of 45 days of cultural programmes known as the “mandalabishegam”.”The prime minister’s presence here today, having travelled overnight from overseas (Commonwealth meetings in London), is a remarkable validation of the commitment the government has, that PM Lee also has, to this,” Iswaran said.”It is an opportunity to bring together different communities so that we develop this mutual understanding and respect and continue to build on Singapore’s multi-racial fabric,” The Straits Times quoted the minister as saying.”Such events indeed, reflect the diversity as well as the harmony we have in our multi-religious, multiracial society,” Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office Chan Chun Sing, who was also present on the occasion, said in a Twitter post. The ceremony was touted as the most significant event on the Hindu calendar this year, according to a report by The Straits Times today. This was the first time Prime Minister Lee visited a Hindu consecration ceremony since he assumed office in 2004.Grace Fu, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, and Janil Puthucheary, Senior Minister of State for Education, Communications and Information, were present on the occasion.A team of 20 artisans, known as “sthapathis” were flown in from India for restoration work.Built in 1854, the Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple was declared a national monument by Singapore’s Preservation of Monuments Board in 1978.

Sanjay describing battle of Kurukshetra to Dhritarashtra proof that internet, television existed back then: Tripura CM

In the statement to prove that Indian science technology advancements go back millennia, Tripura’s new chief minister Biplab Deb said that television and internet services go back to the time of The Ramayana and Mahabharata, NDTV reported. While defending his statement, Deb said that Sanjay, who described the series of events to the blind king Dhritarashtra while both were sitting in the palace, could do so because of the availability of television and internet services at the time.”How can he see through Sanjay’s eyes? There was technology available at that time… internet was there, satellite communication was there,” Mr Deb in the video captured by the channel. Also readTripura CM Biplab Deb meets PM Modi, discusses development issuesWhile the scientific community is yet to comment on the Chief Minister’s comment, this is not the first time BJP’s ministers have made statement like this.In February, junior education minister of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet — Satyapal Singh – courted controversy, saying certain ‘mantras’ codified the laws of motion much before they were discovered by Isaac Newton. Also read7th Pay Commission: Tripura to form expert committee, says CM Biplab DebLast year, the minister said the first flying machine was invented by Indian scholar Shivkar Bapuji Talpade and not the Wright Brothers. Law ministry readies ordinance on SC/ST Act

The law ministry is preparing a draft ordinance to overturn a Supreme Court verdict placing safeguards on arrest of those accused of committing atrocities on SCs and STs, sources in the government today said. The draft is being prepared in case the government decides to bring one to overturn the Supreme Court order. The sources said no decision has been taken so far to bring the ordinance before the union cabinet and much would depend on the way the hearing on a review petition filed by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment in the apex court progresses. They said since review pleas may not bear immediate results and the Supreme Court decision could not be favourable, the government is keeping the draft handy. The sources aware of deliberations within the government at different levels said promulgating an ordinance to restore the original provisions would help calm tempers.Introducing a bill in the Monsoon session of Parliament slated for July to amend the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 to overturn the SC order is the second option before the government, the sources said.Dalit groups had organised protests across the country on April 2 against the alleged dilution of the Act through the March 20 verdict of the Supreme Court. The protests had turned violent at several places which left several people dead.Opposition parties also accused the government of failing to protect Dalit rights.Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday asserted his government will not let the law to prevent atrocities on SCs and STs to be diluted.”I want to assure the nation that the law which has been made stringent by us will not allowed to be affected (by the SC order)…,” he had said. The apex court had laid down new guidelines for police officers on how to ensure that innocent people, especially public officials, are protected from false complaints under the act.

2019 polls may throw up a weaker coalition govt, predicts Morgan Stanley

With the general elections nearing, the street is likely to start pricing in on the poll outcome in the coming months, as there is a possibility of a coalition government coming to power. The Wall Street brokerage Morgan Stanley today said a weak coalition government is one of the biggest concerns for investors, which is a possibility in the 2019 hustings. And it is unlikely that the market will be as optimistic this time around as it was in the past election. “The world’s biggest democratic elections are 12 months away and the market is likely to start pricing in the election outcome in the coming months,” the report said. But “the market could always enter the past elections with the hope of a stronger government than the incumbent. This does not apply to the 2019 polls though where there is a possibility of a weaker government than the incumbent.”Hence, it is unlikely that the market is as optimistic as it has been in the past going into the 2019 general elections,” warns the Morgan Stanley report. But the brokerage was quick to add that “overall assessment of the current state of indicators favours the incumbent. Growth is looking up, inflation is stable, farmers’ sentiment is likely improving, transfers are rising, and jobs are coming back. However, the indicators may shift in the coming months-and together with them, the election outcome.” Basing its pessimism to the past five general elections, Morgan Stanley says while the usual approach of the market in the run-up to the polls is one of optimism, the big change from the past is that none of the elections since the mid-90s has started with a majority government in the run-up to the polls. The report also identifies economic indicators grouped in five categories — growth, inflation, farmer sentiment, direct benefit transfers — which if in good shape can result in re-election of the incumbent government. The brokerage feels that these economic indicators ignore the social and political debates which occupy the center stage in any election and to that extent, they are a simplification of estimating poll outcomes.
