FATHER’S DAY: For kids, dads greater risk takers

Gone are the days when in an Indian family, parents had fixed roles where the father would be the earning member and mother would restrict herself in the kitchen. New age fathers have turned the tables and are more participating in chores of the house. When it comes to dealing with a child, fathers were found to be more risk-taking than mothers.A pan-India study on father’s involvement in parenting, conducted by Early Childhood Association (ECA) found that while mothers have now started hovering too much and becoming a mosquito parent, fathers tend to leave the kids on their own.Explaining the term mosquito parent, Swati Popat Vats, President, ECA is prompt enough to say that whenever a child is trying to explore or play, the mother keeps on using ‘Be careful’ term continuously and act overprotective.“We advise mothers not to do so as it leads to dependency. A very unique thing we found during our survey was that whenever a child has to go to a toilet, and accompanied by the mother, the mother removes the child’s pants or skirt and helps in further discourse. Whereas when fathers accompany, the child manages himself/herself.”While nowhere the study hinted parents to be lenient, it said that parents should act as support and intervene when there is a danger. But in absence of danger, allow the child to the scaffold, adds Vats. In terms of behaviour, nearly 40% mothers allowed risk-taking behaviour whereas 80% fathers encouraged the risk-taking behaviour. While the study found that fathers have now understood the importance of participating in everyday parenting but there is a group of fathers that inspite of wanting to participate and support the children and wife are unable to do so due to societal pressures or a red signal from the wife. It was also found that fathers in a stay at home mom family were not very involved in parenting or household chores as both parents felt there is a clear demarcation of roles and don’t want to shake them. The study showed that both parents have a different style of parenting and the child adjusts to the difference. It is the parents who are unable to accept each one’s unique style of parenting which leads to lack of trust or acceptance of each other. But children need nurturing, protection, independence, and risk taking to be in life.Interestingly, it was also found that fathers in nuclear families were more involved then those in joint families, due to pressure to conform to traditional practices from elders. Says Vats, “Children who have the involvement of both parents will learn to understand different points of views and perspectives and this will help them adjust better in later work environments and society with a better emotional quotient. When they see their parents disagreeing respectfully instead of one person giving in, they will learn conflict resolution and make them more positive about handling challenges and obstacles.”Behaviour-related findingsMothers hover too much whereas the fathers tend to leave the kids on their own Persistence was a skill best learned from mothers than fathers Risk-taking was a skill best learned from fathers than mothers Independent work was also a skill best learned from fathers than mothers Fathers pratice exploration, trial and error, whereas the mothers were more comfortable with a set pattern of play Mothers more concerned about safety like accompanying the child to the toilet so that the child does not get lost etc. Children dependent on mothers, with fathers, they manage on their own 68% of fathers and 38% of mothers allowed the child to understand the toy/puzzle/app/game/activity on its own32% fathers motivated the child if the child was stuck72% mothers ended up doing it for the childTraits of a father with the childThe survey also revealed some statistics that included more than 50% fathers do go out with their children at least once a week, only 18% of fathers go out alone with the children, otherwise most of the time they are with someone from the family so the responsibility of taking care of the kids while outside is shared. This needs to change.Only 16% fathers are able to stay away from screens when at home whereas 42% are hooked to screens while at home *Over 60% fathers participate in household chores not related to parenting like washing, dusting etc. and this is a good trend.

Centre aims to make yoga part of lactating, pregnant woman’s lifestyle

The Centre is working on a programme to make yoga a lifestyle habit for pregnant and lactating women as well as children. The decision was taken by the National Nutrition Council, the inter-ministerial executive committee of POSHAN Abhiyaan (Prime Minister’s Overarching Scheme for Holistic Nourishment). The programme will be carried out by the Union Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga, and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homoeopathy, or Ayush Ministry (AYUSH). It will propagate the idea in modules, which will be customised for the beneficiaries, as per the minutes of the meeting accessed by DNA. The minutes also state that the scheme is “monitored at the highest level by the PMO”.The decision, which comes days ahead of World Yoga Day on June 21, also comes a year after the ministry landed in a minor controversy after the publication of a booklet called ‘Mother and Child Care’ by the Central Council for Research in Yoga and Naturopathy (CCRYN), an autonomous body under the ministry. The ministry had said that the booklet had “relevant and useful information” compiled after years of “clinical practice in the fields of yoga and naturopathy”. “It aims to take the well-known health benefits of yoga and naturopathy to expecting mothers and new mothers in a simple booklet format,” a government release stated.Representatives of NITI Ayog, Health Ministry, Women and Child Development Ministry, Food and Public Distribution Ministry, and state representatives took part in the meeting. It was decided that the health and WCD ministries will work on updating the Joint Mother Child Protection cards so that it functions as a “common core guidebook and counselling tool”.Apart from that, a nutrition resource network will also be set up by the states and UTs to support the POSHAN Abhiyaan scheme and it will be linked to national and state nutrition resource centres.THE PLANThe programme will be carried out by the Union Ministry of AYUSH. It aims to take Yoga and naturopathy benefits to expecting mothers. Also a nutrition resource network will be set up to back POSHAN Abhiyaan.

Sanjeet Vidrohi’s sole aim was to be famous

As many as two dozen people from Rohtak arrived at the AIIMS Trauma Centre mortuary to claim the body of their ‘beloved son’ Sanjeet Vidrohi, who was shot dead in the encounter on Saturday afternoon by a team of officers of Special Cell.Vidrohi’s elder brother Manjeet, who is an officer with the Railway Protection Force (RPF), wipes his tears as he walks out of the mortuary. His cousins said that Bharti’s gang was only working because of Vidrohi and the death of any person — whether a criminal or a normal person — is a deep loss. Family members alleged that the encounter was ‘staged’ and that the police could have given him a chance.Manjeet entered the mortuary just after noon. He was accompanied by around 15 -20 others from Rohtak, the residence of Vidrohi. As they waited outside the mortuary for the policemen to come, an officer arrived and said that only two would be allowed to enter and see the body.Minutes later Manjeet walked out of the mortuary with tears rolling down his cheeks. His cousin held his left hand and Manjeet kept on wiping his dripping tears as he walked away to complete the hospital formalities. Vidrohis’ mother hadn’t been told of her son’s death and has been told not believe any media report about her son.One of Delhi’s most-notorious gangsters who carried a reward of Rs 2 lakh on his head, Rajesh Bharti was among the four criminals killed after a shoot-out in south Delhi’s Chattarpur area on Saturday. Eight policemen were wounded in the operation which ended with the death of Rajesh Bharti.Speaking to DNA his cousin Sahil Chikkara said,”Vidrohi was a fearless man, not from now but since his childhood. He was loved by the entire neighbourhood for what he was. He had only one aim in his life “to make a name for himself, which he did. He did not care if he was famous or infamous. Bharti was elder to him and it was Vidrohi who was actually leading the gang being one of his best sharpshooters and his right-hand man. But, two years ago his family had disowned him for his refusal to leave the criminal world.”The family members also said that the encounter was staged. “The area where the encounter took place has several farmhouses which have CCTV cameras, but only the spot where they were killed had no CCTV cameras. The police officials should have given them a chance to surrender at least,” said Chikkara.HIDDEN FROM MOMVidrohis’ mother hadn’t been told of her son’s death and has been told not believe any media report about her son.

What’s your excuse? These two Thane students who grew up under a flyover ace their SSC exams

Who said you can’t overcome odds at all costs? Ask Dashrath Pawar and Mohan Kale, who despite growing up in destitute conditions scored a first class in their Class X SSC exams.Pawar and Kale study in the Signal School in Thane’s Teen Hath Naka, Mid Day reported. The school is named because it was built inside a revamped container at the busy junction under a flyover by the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) and NGO Samarth Bharat Vyaspeeth (SBV).TMC and SBV started the school two years ago for children who beg or hawk at the signal. Kale and Pawar studied in the din of the traffic that passes on either side of the school, to score 77% and 65% respectively. Pawar’s parents are flower sellers, while Kale’s parents beg on the streets. For Kale, the 77% signals a chance to break out of begging – something his family has been doing for three generations. A dropout after Class V, his family was relocated by the TMC as they wanted to construct the school. Initially he was angry, and wanted to get back at the children, but when he entered the school, a teacher made him sit and he never looked back. “I want to join an industrial training-related course and stop my mother from begging,” he told Mid Day.Meanwhile Pawar, who scored 60% said he wanted to join the police force. “Had my teachers not beaten up me for studies, I would never have got first class. I used to sleep a lot but teachers would scold me, and changed my schedule. They have done so many things for both of us. We are very lucky,” he said. A few months ago, Sreenath K, a coolie who cleared the written test of the Kerala Public Service Commission, the preparation is just about his phone and earphones as he goes about his job.Sreenath has been earning his livelihood carrying heavy luggage at Ernakulam Junction in Kerala for the past five years..Unlike his colleagues, he deftly balances the luggage on his shoulders and listens to his digital coursework at the same time – his teachers speaking to him through the earphones.A high school pass-out, he took advantage of the free WiFi Internet service available at Ernakulam station to learn.

When Sharmistha Mukherjee and Subramanian Swamy bonded over father-daughter differences

In a nation as large as ours, political differences within the family is a given. Some of the more prominent political families in our country have members on both sides of the aisle. While Sonia and Rahul Gandhi are the main power-centres in Congress, their relatives the late Sanjay Gandhi’s wife and son – Maneka and Varun Gandhi – are both important members of BJP. Maneka is the Women’s and Children’s Development Minister while Varun Gandhi is an MP from Sultanpur, MP.Similarly, Vasundhara Raje, Chief Minister of Rajasthan is a member of the BJP despite being the late Madhav Rao Scindia’s sister who was a prominent leader for Congress. Her nephew Jyotiraditya Scindia is an MP from Guna and one of the most recognisable faces in Madhya Pradesh. The intra-familial political tussle was again witnessed recently when Sharmistha Mukherjee, a Congress leader and former President Pranab Mukherjee’s daughter tussled with her pater over his sojourn to the RSS headquarters. Also readTold you so: Sharmistha Mukherjee chides her father Pranab after fake pictures of him giving RSS salute goes viralThe father-daughter tussle became quite a talking point with even Subramanian Swamy weighing in on the debate. Swamy, often disagrees with journalist daughter Suhasini Haider, told CNN-News 18: “This is something you must grow up to. My own daughter doesn’t agree with my views and I don’t agree with hers. But we are a happy family. We must learn that individuals have opinions.”This led to Sharmistha agreeing with Subramanian Swamy as she wrote on Twitter: “Exactly! That’s how I grew up, & that’s why I don’t have any problem expressing my differences with him on issues even in public. We are a democratic, argumentative family; and I learnt this from my father only.”Also readTold you so: Sharmistha Mukherjee chides her father Pranab after fake pictures of him giving RSS salute goes viralHopefully, this civil exchange between the two will be a reminder that politics doesn’t have to plummet into verbal arguments and we can be civil to each other while disagreeing. Also readCongress switches tune, now hails Pranab MukherjeeSenior Congress leader Anand Sharma on Thursday took a veiled jibe at the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), saying that former president Pranab Mukherjee had shown ‘mirror’ to the organisation, reminding them of what real India looked like.Speaking to ANI, Sharma said, “There was never any doubt of Pranab Mukherjee’s ability to articulate and his conviction, but for dialogue, the other side must listen and change. Pranab ji espoused on a multi-lingual and multi-ethnic India, which is the beauty and strength of our country. He has shown mirror to RSS, whose ideology is completely the opposite, as to what is true India all about.””We did not see the tricolour go up or the national anthem being sung at the RSS head quarter. Hope, the RSS will reflect and change what should be changed,” he added.Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said that Mukherjee had shown the ‘mirror of truth’ of India’s pluralism to the RSS.”Dr.Mukherjee’s visit to the RSS headquarters (in Nagpur) had led to a wide range of discussions and concerns. Today, Pranab Mukherjee has shown the mirror to RSS. He talked of plurality, tolerance, and multiculturalism. He has reminded the RSS of the history of India. He taught the RSS that India’s beauty lies in its tolerance for different ideas, religions and languages,” Surjewala told media.Bombarding a series of questions to the RSS in regard to its Hindutva ideology, Surjewala asked, “Is RSS ready to admit its mistakes and ready to adapt India’s pluralism, secularism and diversity? Will RSS give up its prejudice towards women and marginalised? Will it give up its inherent character of subjugation and violence?”Asked on Mukherjee’s hailing of RSS founder K.B. Hedgewar as a ‘great son of Mother India’, Surjewala replied, “As a guest what Pranab Mukherjee ji said should be discussed and highlighted, not unwarranted formalities.”Earlier in the day, Mukherjee spoke on the concepts of nation, nationalism and patriotism in the context of India, at the RSS event in Nagpur.Addressing the RSS cadres at the Tritiya Varsh Varg’ event, the former president said, “We accept and respect our pluralism and celebrate our diversity. Our national identity has emerged after a long drawn process of confluence and assimilation, the multiple cultures and faiths make us special and tolerant. Nation is defined as a large group of people sharing the same language, heritage. Nationalism is defined as identification oneself with one’s own nation. Patriotism is defined as devotion to one’s own country. We derive our strength from tolerance. We respect our pluralism. We celebrate our diversity.””Intolerance will only dilute our national identity. Any attempt to define our nation through religion, dogma or intolerance will only fade our existence,” he added.Mukherjee spoke about the ancient institutions of India that attracted students from outside as well.He said that the Indian nationalism emanated from universalism. The former president further said, “Any attempt at defining our nationhood in terms of dogma and identities or religion, region, hatred, and intolerance will only lead to dilution of our identity.”The former president said the democracy is not a gift, but a sacred guide for the nation and its people.

Told you so: Sharmistha Mukherjee chides her father Pranab after fake pictures of him giving RSS salute goes viral

The fallout over former President Pranab Mukherjee’s speech at RSS HQ continued on Thursday with Shamistha Mukherjee taking her own father to task. The Congress leader shared a photoshopped picture of her father giving the RSS salute and said that ‘BJP-RSS’s dirty tricks department’ was at work. She later wrote that it was normal for her to have differences with her father. She wrote: “Exactly! That’s how I grew up, & that’s why I don’t have any problem expressing my differences with him on issues even in public. We are a democratic, argumentative family; & I learnt this from my father only.”Sharmishta Mukherjee had vehemently opposed her father’s RSS sojourn and wrote on Twitter: “See, this is exactly what I was fearing and warned my father about. Not even few hours have passed, but BJP/RSS dirty tricks dept is at work in full swing!”Sharmistha Mukherjee had earlier claimed that her father was giving the BJP and the Sangh a handle to plant false stories. Also readPranab Mukherjee shows soul of Bharat in speechShe had earlier written: “In the mountains enjoying a beautiful sunset, & suddenly this news that I’m supposedly joining BJP hits like a torpedo! Can’t there be some peace & sanity in this world? I joined politics because I believe in @INCIndia Wud rather leave politics than leave Congress.”She had also responded to claims that she was joining the BJP by tweeted: “Hope @CitiznMukherjee now realises from todays’ incident, how BJP dirty tricks dept operates. Even RSS wouldn’t believe that u r going 2 endorse its views in ur speech. But the speech will be forgotten, visuals will remain & those will be circulated with fake statements. By going 2 Nagpur, u r giving BJP/RSS full handle 2 plant false stories, spread falls rumours as 2day & making it somewhat believable. And this is just d beginning!”Also readPranab Mukherjee reminds Modi govt of following ‘Rajdharma’, shows ‘mirror of truth’ to RSS: CongressFormer President Pranab Mukherjee on Thursday warned that any attempt to define India through “religion, hatred, dogmas and intolerance” will dilute our existence and said public discourses must be freed of all forms of violence, as he addressed an RSS event despite criticism by the Congress and his family.Asserting that India’s identity has emerged through a long-drawn process of confluence, assimilation and co-existence, Mukherjee, in a strong-worded speech on ‘nation, nationalism and patriotism’ in context of Bharat, said India’s soul resides in pluralism and tolerance.Mukherjee’s message to hundreds of ‘pracharaks’ and top-brass of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, which is often described as a Hindu right-wing organisation, was described as a ‘mirror of truth to the RSS’ by the Congress, whose several leaders have so far been critical of his decision to attend the event here at the Sangh headquarters. At the same time, the Hindutva leaders including S Gurumurthy said Mukherjee talked about nationalism not being limited to any religious identity, which was the same message delivered by the RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat. In an apparent reference to the ‘one-nation-one-culture ideology’ often identified with the RSS, Mukherjee said India’s nationhood is not “one language, one religion and one enemy”.”It is ‘perennial universalism’ of 1.3 billion people who use 122 languages and 1600 dialects…practice seven major religions… live under one system, one flag and one identity of being Bhartiya and have ‘no enemies’. That is what makes Bharat a diverse and united nation,” he said.Mukherjee, who served as President of India between 2012 and 2017, said, “Every day, we see increased violence around us. At the heart of this violence is darkness, fear and mistrust. We must free our public discourse from all forms of violence, physical as well as verbal.” In remarks that come amid an outrage over incidents of rapes including of minors, he talked about “soul of India” getting wounded, every time a child or woman is brutalised and “manifestations of rage are tearing our social fabric”.Mukherjee said only “a non-violent society” can ensure the participation of all sections of people in the democratic process, especially the marginalised and dispossessed.”We must move from anger, violence and conflict to peace, harmony and happiness,” he said.Mukherjee also talked about thousands years of Indian history, including the rules of various dynasties, Muslim invaders, a mercantile company and then the British empire. He quoted from works of Jawahar Lal Nehru, Rabindra Nath Tagore, Bal Gangadhar Tilak and others and praised Sardar Vallab Bhai Patel for uniting India by bringing the princely states into the main fold. Before the former president spoke, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat said the debate over Mukherjee’s decision to attend the RSS event was “meaningless” and no one is an outsider for his organisation.Mukherjee’s decision to attent the RSS event has already triggered a major political slugfest with several Congress leaders criticising his decision. While senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel expressed his disapproval at Mukherjee visiting the RSS headquarters, the former president’s daughter Sharmistha said her father was giving the BJP and the Sangh a handle to plant false stories with his decision to speak at the event.Speaking ahead of Mukherjee’s speech, Bhagwat said Mukherjee will remain what he is and the Sangh will remain the Sangh even after the event.Bhagwat said his organisation wants to unify the entire society and no one was an outsider for it.People may have different views but they are all children of mother India, he said.Bhagwat said the Sangh has inviting prominent people to its event every year. Those present at today’s event also included former prime minister Lal Bahadu Shastri’s son Sunil Shastri, as also Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose’s nephew Ardhendu Bose along with his wife and son.Earlier in the day, Mukherjee described Keshav Baliram Hedgewar as a “great son of Mother India’ as he visited the birthplace of the RSS founding Sarsanghachalak.”Today I came here to pay my respect and homage to a great son of Mother India,” Mukherjee wrote in a visitor’s book at Hedgewar’s birthplace ahead of his much-anticipated speech at the RSS headquarters here. The Sangh describes itself as a nationalist and cultural organisation rather than a political or religious one. It was founded by Hedgewar , on September 27, 1925 on Vijayadashami day at his house here. The name ‘Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’ was selected for the organisation on April 17, 1926 from a list of four names — Jaripatka Mandal, Bharat Uddharak Mandal, Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh, and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. With inputs from PTI

Another girl allegedly committed suicide over NEET failure in Tamil Nadu

Apparently upset over her inability to clear the NEET examination, a girl allegedly committed suicide here, the second medical aspirant to end her life in Tamil Nadu this week.Subasri who could only score 24 in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for medical courses was feeling very depressed in the past few days and hanged herself in her house on Wednesday night, police said. Her parents broke open the door of the room and rushed her to a hospital where she died without responding to treatment this morning. The death of Subasri comes days after 19-year old Prateebha, academically ‘bright’ daughter of a farmhand, allegedly ended her life in Villupuram district after failure to clear the NEET, setting off a political blame game over the test.Opposition parties led by DMK raised Prateebha’s death in the ongoing assembly session while its leader M K Stalin urged chief ministers of other southern states and West Bengal to oppose the NEET saying it discriminated against non-Hindi speaking students. The state government has said it continued to oppose NEET and recalled its efforts to secure an exemption for Tamil Nadu such as adopting resolutions in the assembly in this regard.Police said Subasri who was nurturing an ambition to join MBBS scored only 907 marks out of 1200 in the Class XII exam, but was hopeful of clearing the NEET as she had attended coaching classes. But, the poor marks in the NEET shocked and saddened her and she was feeling very anguished since then, they said.Subasri’s father Kannan, a transport corporation employee, and mother had tried to pacify her and asked her not to worry and tried to divert her attention by taking her outside, including a temple, they said. But she felt very ashamed and depressed. She went insider her room last night when her mother was cooking and hanged herself, they said, adding her body was handed over to her parents after post-mortem today.State Transport Minister M R Vijaya Baskar visited the bereaved family and offered his condolences.Kannan said his daughter was dreaming to study medicine and offer service to the poor. Despite her hard work, she could not clear NEET, he said. This is the third suicide of a student over NEET in Tamil Nadu since last year. Anitha, a Dalit girl from Ariyalur, ended her life for failing to clear the NEET last year.

Pranab Mukherjee describes RSS founder Hedgewar as ‘great son of Mother India’

Former President and the Congress veteran Pranab Mukherjee today described Keshav Baliram Hedgewar as a “great son of Mother India’ as he visited the birthplace of the RSS founding Sarsanghachalak.”Today I came here to pay my respect and homage to a great son of Mother India,” Mukherjee wrote in a visitor’s book at Hedgewar’s birthplace ahead of his much-anticipated speech at the RSS headquarters here. Those present included Subhash Chandra Bose’s family members who have been invited as special guests, sources said.Mukherjee, who was welcomed by the RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, had to walk through narrow lanes to reach the house where Hedgewar was born and also removed his shoes before entering the place.According to sources, this visit to pay tributes to Hedgewar was not part of Mukherjee’s scheduled itinerary and an impromptu decision was taken by the former president to do so.Mukherjee, who reached Nagpur last evening, has been invited by the RSS to address its Shiksha Varg and attend a parade by the Sangh workers on completion of the training camp.It is an annual training camp, meant for swayamsevaks in their third year in the organisation. The RSS holds training camps for first, second and third-year swayamsewaks.Mukherjee’s decision to attent the RSS event has already triggered a major political slugfest with several Congress leaders criticising his decision.Senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel today expressed his disapproval at former president Pranab Mukherjee visiting the RSS headquarters in Nagpur and said he did not expect this from him.Mukherjee’s daughter and Congress leader Sharmistha had yesterday said her father was giving the BJP and the Sangh a handle to plant false stories with his decision to speak at the RSS event. His “speech will be forgotten” but the “visuals will remain”, she said on Twitter. She also expressed the hope that the former president would realise how the BJP’s “dirty tricks department” works and warned him of the consequences of attending such a meet. Some Congress leaders, including Jairam Ramesh and C K Jaffar Sharief, also wrote to him, while a few leaders of the party, including Anand Sharma, personally visited him in a bid to dissuade him from going to Nagpur.

Kerala: As families shun bodies of Nipah victims, a doctor steps up to do last rites

Going beyond the call of duty, a doctor in Kozhikode performed the role of a pall bearer to conduct the last rites of some of those who lost their lives to the deadly Nipah virus. With close relatives staying away due to fear of contracting Nipah, Dr R S Gopakumar, Health Officer of Kozhikode corporation, took the responsibility of handling 12 bodies, whose final journey was supervised by him. “I was a pall bearer for 3 bodies and performed their last rites too,” the 41-year-old Gopakumar told PTI. Nipah virus has claimed 17 lives– 14 in Kozhikode and 3 in neighbouring Malappuram since its outbreak last month. Yesterday, the state government had updated the toll to 17 after including the death of Mohammed Sabith, the first victim, whose samples had not been tested for Nipah.Gopakumar said he performed the last rites of a 17-year-old boy who died of Nipah as his mother was in the isolation ward for suspected virus infection. She could not even see her son for one last time and permitted Dr Gopakumar to perform the exequies. “I was saddened that during his last journey there was none of his dear ones to perform last rites. I did not have to think twice.. and I decided to perform all Hindu rites for the boy as I wanted him to go on his final journey with all the dignity. It was my duty…,” he said. After relatives of a 53-year-old man, who died of Nipah, informed him that they were not participating in the funeral, he conducted the final rites for him too. Also readNipah Virus Outbreak: After UAE, Saudi Arabia bans import of fruits, vegetables from Kerala Another last journey which tugged his heart was when he assisted the husband of a 19-year-old woman. The woman, who had allegedly consumed poison, had been brought to a hospital here from Karnataka when some persons who were later found to be positive for Nipah, were treated near her bed. However, the woman’s samples were found to be negative later. Extreme care and standing operating procedures laid down by the experts of National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) were followed for handling Nipah affected bodies during the cremation and burial as exposure to Nipah virus (NiV) is highly hazardous.Secretion and excretion from a deceased person are considered equally infectious like that of a living infected person. As part of the standard procedures, the bodies should not be sprayed, washed or embalmed and personnel handling remains have to wear protective equipment like gloves, gowns, N95 masks, eye protection shield and shoe cover. Gopakumar said he had overseen the funeral of of 61 year-old Moosa, whose two sons and brother’s wife had fallen prey to Nipah virus. It is suspected that during the ritual of bathing of Sabith’s body, Moosa and his younger son might have contracted the virus, he said. A 10-feet pit was dug and 5 kg of bleaching powder was spread inside the pit. The body was packed in an air-tight plastic double body bag and then lowered into the pit.Dr Reshma Sahay, Scientist from the National Virology Institute, Pune was present as she had handled Ebola cases earlier. Also readSpread of Nipah virus controlled, but people should be alert: Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan”We followed Ebola protocol for the burial,” Dr Gopakumar said. Of the 12 bodies, 8 were Nipah positive cases and four were suspected cases which later turned out to be negative. Patients’ relatives performed rites for nine of the bodies. There were situations when the staff in Kozhikode crematorium refused to perform the last rites of some Nipah victims due to fear. The natural host of the virus is believed to be fruit bats of the Pteropodidae family, Pteropus genus. The body was in the ambulance for few hours after which people from Ivor madom, who conduct funeral rites on the banks of Bharatha puzha, had to be called to do the final rites, he said. The issue was discussed by the Kerala Assembly yesterday and Health minister, K K Shylaja was all praise for the selfless service of Dr Gopakumar.

Human milk bank helps save 449 preterm babies in 26 months

Two years after a human milk bank was set-up as a part of the corporate social responsibility, the ‘Amaara’ milk bank has saved the lives of 449 babies in 26 months with over 766 litres of milk collected as donations from 130 mothers.According to the World Health Organization (WHO), India has the greatest number of preterm births in the world. Of the 2 crores 60 lakh childbirths each year, about 35 lakh are preterm, of which almost three lakh die of associated complications.”Breastmilk is even more important for premature babies and unfortunately a lot of preterm mothers do not lactate enough in the first few days after delivery. Human milk banks can help bridge this vital gap. Mother’s milk can be stored for six months at room temperature and can be used for six hours,” said Dr Raghuram Mallaiah, Director, Neonatology, Fortis LaFemme.’Amaara’ saved 449 premature babies from the donated milk in 537 cycles. The babies were fed with around 722 litres of milk during the period. Amaara Delhi supplies milk to preterm babies admitted in NICU of more than 30 hospitals in Delhi/NCR.The largest government-run human-milk bank was inaugurated in Delhi last year with a capacity of as much as 300 litres.

Child’s right to maintenance not just two meals a day: Delhi court

A child’s right to maintenance is not restricted to his father paying for two daily meals only but must be determined on the basis of benefits he would have enjoyed as if he was living with his parents, a Delhi court has said. The court’s observation came while directing a man to pay Rs 12,000 per month to his estranged wife for maintaining their eight-year-old son.Additional Sessions Judge Sanjiv Jain rejected the appeal filed by the man against a magisterial court order directing him to pay Rs 12,000 towards maintenance of the child and Rs 6,000 to wife for her expenses every month in a domestic violence case lodged by her.”The scope of his (father’s) duty is to be regulated directly in relation to the money, status that he enjoys. The right to maintenance of a child from his father cannot be restricted to two meals a day but must be determined on the basis of benefit, status and money that the child would have enjoyed as if he was living with the family including mother and father,” the judge said. The court accepted the contention of the woman, who got married in 1998, that she was beaten and tortured by her husband as their relationship got strained after he developed a relationship with their house maid after six years of their marriage. It also said that just because there was no medico legal case for each time she was beaten, does not mean she was not tortured.”It is true that there is no medico legal case to support the allegations of the woman as to the incident of beating but it does not mean that no incident of beating had taken place or for every incident of beating, there should be the medico legal case,” the court said.In his appeal against the magisterial court order, the man claimed that he was earning between Rs 15,000-20,000 per month and had the liability to take care of his ailing father. The court, however, said that the trial court has rightly assessed the husband’s income to be more than Rs 50,000 per month as fitness trainer. In her complaint, the woman had alleged that she had separated from her husband several times and had even approached the police but they reconciled after the man apologised and assured he would live peacefully with her.She alleged that she finally separated from him in 2011 after the birth of her son in 2010 as the man stopped giving her money for household expenses and continued torturing her.The man, however, had denied all the allegations and claimed that the woman maintained a lavish lifestyle which was beyond his means.

Sitaji was born from earthern pot, concept similar to test tube baby existed during Ramayana: UP Deputy CM

UP Deputy CM Dinesh Sharma has again stirred the pot by making controversial remark regarding prevelance of concept of test tube baby during Ramayana. Speaking at a function, ANI quoted Dinesh Sharma as saying, ” People say Sita ji was born from an earthen pot, which means at the time of Ramayana, a concept similar to test tube baby must have existed”. He also managed to draw parallel between journalism and Sanjaya relaying information to blind king Dhritarashtra. Sharma said, ” Today, live telecast is being done, but I think a similar technology was present at the time of Mahabharata, when Sanjay presented a ‘live telecast’ of the battle of Mahabharata to Dhritarashtra”. Couple of days back in an event organised to mark Hindi Journalism Day’, minister had spoken about this in detail. He said the mythological character, Sanjaya, sitting at Hastinapur, narrated a bird’s eye view of the war of Mahabharata, to Dhritarashtra. Yeh live telecast nahi to aur kya hai (if it is not live telecast, then what is it ?),” Sharma asked. The BJP minister also equated another character, Narada, with the present-day Google. “Your Google has started now, but our Google started long time back. ‘Narad Muni’ was the epitome of information. He could reach anywhere and transfer a message from one place to another by saying ‘Narayana’ three times,” he said. The BJP leaders have courted controversy by claiming that advance medical procedures like cataract, plastic surgery, even the gravitation theory, nuclear tests and the internet, have all started during ancient times. SC stays NGT order on pond renovation in Govardhan’s Braj area

The Supreme Court today stayed the operation of a National Green Tribunal (NGT) order for the demolition of ponds renovated by an NGO in the Braj area of Uttar Pradesh’s pilgrimage town Govardhan.A vacation bench of Justices L Nageswara Rao and MM Shantanagoudar considered the appeal of the NGO, Braj Foundation, and stayed the NGT order on demolition.Senior advocate A M Singhvi, appearing for the NGO, said an order issued in public interest cannot be “an anti-public order”.”… the highest allegation against me (NGO) is that I did not follow the procedure while undertaking the renovation work of the ponds,” he said. Now the NGT has ordered the demolition of these renovated ponds which is against the public interest, he added.”This is the wrong way of doing the right thing,” Singhvi said, seeking a stay on the NGT order. The NGT has passed several orders on a petition alleging that renovation work has been done without following due procedure in the Govardhan area. The NGO has challenged the NGT’s May 24 order which had junked its plea to continue the work and had stated that the renovation project be taken up by the government. No “private individual, organisation, NGO or any other body” should undertake the work of preservation and restoration of water bodies, the tribunal had said.Due to the NGT order, the local authorities stayed the restoration work being undertaken by the foundation at Sankarshan Kund in Anyor and Rudra Kund in Jatipura, the NGO has said.

Uttarakhand: ADG denies Sikh cop who saved Muslim youth from mob received threats

A senior Uttarakhand police official today dismissed the media reports that said Sub-Inspector Gagandeep Singh, who recently saved a Muslim youth from an angry mob in Ramnagar, had gone on leave as he was receiving death threats.”He has not received any threats. His going on leave has nothing to do with the Ramnagar episode. Taking leave is a routine thing. He will be back on duty on June 2,” ADG law and order Ashok Kumar said.A section of news media had reported that Singh had taken leave as he was receiving death threats after he saved a Muslim youth from an angry mob which had spotted him with a Hindu girl at a temple in Ramnagar in Nainital district.”When a policeman saves someone in trouble he only does his duty no matter which religion or community the person in distress belongs to,” the ADG said, adding Singh did exactly that.Nainital SSP Janmejay Khanduri too refuted the media reports last night.

Farmers launch 10-day long nationwide strike from today, to affect vegetables, milk supply

Thousands of farmers in various parts of the nation have launched a 10-day nation-wide strike demanding waiver of loans, right price for their crops and implementation of recommendations of Swaminathan Commission. The strike is being spearheaded by Rashtriya Kisan Mazdoor Mahasangh (RKS). RKS was formed in Bhopal with the participation of 17 farmers’ bodies from across the country and many organisations joined it later on.In Madhya Pradesh, to mark protest against last year’s Mandsaur violence, various farmer organisations have called for “Gaon bandh” during which no farm produce would be allowed to be transported outside villages.”The agitation enjoys the support of more than 150 farmers organisation. Besides, all 50 Panchayats of the state have also announced to fight for the rights of farmers,” Chief of Aam Kisan Union, Kedar Sirohi told IANS”The government responds to the rightful demands of the farmers with lathis and bullets. June 6 is a black day for farmers. Nothing will be supplied by villages to cities for the next 10 days, neither will anything be brought from the cities during the period,” Sirohi said. The farmers’ organisations are demanding that the Union government announce a fixed remunerative price for farm produce including vegetables and milk.In Maharashtra, farmers have announced a day-long strike on Friday, whereas in Madhya Pradesh farmers have declared a complete shutdownOn Thursday, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, dubbed the farmers’ agitation as an agitation of the Congress party. “The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in the state is working for the welfare of farmers and it has taken several big decisions in their interest,” he said.

Fishermen rescue endangered whale shark caught in their nets, win accolades as video goes viral

Whale sharks are one of the largest fishes in the ocean and are also called ‘Gentle Giants.’ The plankton-eating fish are extremely docile, but their population faces huge threat due to rampant hunting for their meat, fin and oil.Ganesh Nakhawa, Vice Chairman of Purse Seine Fishing Welfare Association, informed that the video was shared by one of the fishermen from his association, who were on the boat. They narrated the whole experience to him. “The incident happened two weeks ago when this boat from Mumbai’s Sassoon dock was out fishing for horse mackerel. The crew on the boat soon realised that a whale shark was stuck and since it was a purse siene net they could lead the shark to the end of the net and ensured it was safely released,” he said adding that this was a major advantage of purse seine nets.Even as the video has gone viral and several experts and conservationists demanded that the crew needed to be felicitated, Nakhwa informed that the crew which is from Uttar Pradesh and Ratnagiri have gone back to their villages as the ships have been docked with the end of fishing season. “We have all their names and they will be back after August 15 after which they can be felicitated,” he informed. Local fishermen state that for the Koli community, the whale shark is revered and its sighting is considered very auspicious. “We call it Bairi Dev locally and spotting it in the ocean is regarded as a good season so there is no question nobody would want to harm the fish. In fact, we have been educating our community and the fishermen under our association to ensure they save any protected and endangered mammal or such fish caught in the nets,” he said.N Vasudevan, Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (APCCF) Mangrove Cell, said that these are one of the most beautiful sharks and are endangered species as they were mass hunted but a lot of programmes for their protection are being run across India. “They are known to breed in Gujarat and Malvan is where the second biggest congregation if these whale sharks are found. The effort by the fishermen is commendable,” he said.Marine enthusiast and one of the founders of Marine Life of Mumbai (MLOM) Pradip Patade, who even shared the video on social media, said that such videos also make sure that people know about the conservation work done by the fishing community. “I was very glad that BNHS Director Deepak Apte voiced that these fishermen who released the whale shark must be recognised and even said that BNHS will do it. Such support and gestures will help strengthen the resolve of the fishing community to protect such endangered species,” he said.Meanwhile, to promote marine conservation, in a first of its kind initiative for Maharashtra, fishermen who cut their fishing nets to free- protected marine mammals and fishes, which get entangled will now be able to claim compensation of up to Rs 25,000 under the Mangrove Foundation’s conservation project. A provision of Rs 25 Lakh has been made by the Foundation for this project for the year 2018-19 and the funds will be disbursed in co-ordination with the Fisheries department.

After son’s brutal murder by Muslim girlfriend’s family, Ankit Saxena’s father to host iftar for communal harmony

In February, Yashpal Saxena’s world came crashing down when he got the news that his son was brutally murdered in broad daylight. Ankit Saxena, the 23-year-old photographer, was mercilessly thrashed and murdered in a market of west Delhi’s Khayala area on February 3. The young man was killed by his Muslim girlfriend’s family who were against the inter-faith relationship. Nevertheless, despite the hostility and drama, Yashpal Saxena always made sure that his son’s murder was not communalised. Months later, Saxena is planning to host an iftar party on June 3 for promoting communal harmony. ‘This is just an attempt to further our cause of communal harmony…We want our son’s name to be synonymous with this cause,’ Saxena was quoted as saying by The Print. The local police station and all the officials investigating the ase have also been invited by the family. The Saxenas are also planning to form a trust in their son’s name. They want to reach out and help couples who want to or already have married people outside their faith. The fateful day Saxena was on his way to meet his girlfriend when her family caught sight of him in Raghubir Nagar and a verbal spat followed. “He was then attacked with a knife. Since the two belong to different communities, police force has been deployed in the area,” a senior police officer was quoted as saying.Saxena’s mother was also beaten up when she rushed to the location, and it was her who took him to the hospital in an auto-rickshaw. “There were dozens of people watching my son get beaten up, but none of them dared to save him. My son was a body builder himself, but he was helpless when the killers caught and killed him. The sight of the woman’s father wielding a big kukri knife must have scared others,” the mother said at the time of the incident.

Air India hostess accuses senior executive of sexual harassment, Suresh Prabhu takes note

An Air India hostess has accused a senior executive of sexual harassment and discrimination over the last few years, claiming that the airline authorities have refused to deal with the matter seriously. In a letter to Union Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu, which she posted on Twitter, the lady has claimed that a senior executive has repeatedly sexually harassed and tortured her for the last six years, and the management is considering rewarding him instead of taking any punitive action. However, the woman has refused to reveal the name of the accused. She also said that the Air India’s women’s cell did nothing to act on the issue and even tried to hush up the matter. The Air India employee also claimed that other women have gone through a similar ordeal with the same senior executive, but they are too afraid to come forward owing to his ‘connections’.”He is equal to if not worse than Harvey Weinstein and Bill Cosby put together,” she said.Meanwhile, Suresh Prabhu has asked Air India CMD to immediately address the issue. “If necessary, will appoint another committee,” he said in a tweet.”I am an Air Hostess and a proud single mother working for Air India. Without mincing any words, this senior Executive (whose name will be revealed when I meet you) is a predator and has sexually propositioned me , abused me, used abusive language on other women in my presence, spoken of Sexual acts with me and other women in my presence in the office premises and he has tried to compel women in his office (including me) to come and drink with him at various bars, and many of us have been forced to do so. There are many people who can bear witness to these things. He has insulted me and denied me positions and privileges after I rejected his advances and he has made my life a misery at work and continues to do so,” she said in a letter. Stating that last September she mustered up courage and complained to the company, the victim said, “I also wrote to the then CMD for action-but none was forthcoming. I was a diligent executive and followed all company processes. In fact the whispers going around was that ‘I was Prompted’ or ‘I was used’ to file this complaint, which were falsely spread by the supporters of this senior executive.”I used the internal processes because I did not want to attract publicity or attention, in the media or the Airline, but 6 years of torture and 9 months of torturous delay and coverups have left me frustrated,” she said. The air hostess, who is also a single mother claimed that when she narrated her tale, the lady chairperson of the committee responded saying”Oh you know how HE TALKS. HE HAS EVEN FLIRTED WITH ME LIKE THIS SO MANY TIMES ” She further stated that her faith in the system has been brutally shaken. “As a loyal employee for 33+ years, I have tried to follow the processes Internally, but I have lost all hope that the Al bosses club will dispense any woman Justice. My hope now lies with your office (Suresh Prabhu-Civil Aviation Ministry)”.”I believe in our beloved Prime Minister’s Call of “Beti Bachao, Beti padhao” – and I am sure that “after educating beti, you won’t let such a grave injustice happen to her at the workplace” and I would kindly request you to please urgently look into the matter and appoint a neutral investigation committee to look into the matter and until the impartial enquiry is complete, to ensure that this Senior officer does not assume any charge where he is in contact with and in control of more than 2000 women including me,” she said in a letter. Meanwhile, Chetan Sanghi, Joint Secretary in Ministry of Women and Child has asked the women to email the particulars at [email protected] “We will get it surely looked into,” he said in a tweet.

My mother inhaled smoke to cook for us: PM Modi explains why Ujjwala Yojana is govt’s priority

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said that the Bharatiya Janata Party Government (BJP) under Ujjwala Yojana provided LPG connections to 10 Crore households in the span of four years, a task which the previous government could not achieve in decades.Ujjwala Yojana aims to safeguard the health of women and children by providing them with a clean cooking fuel. The Prime Minister while interacting with beneficiaries of the Ujjwala Yojana from across the nation via NaMo app underlined that the initiative played a vital role in social empowerment.”Ujjwala Yojana has positively impacted the lives of several people across India and is leading to better health for ‘India’s Nari Shakti. Ujjwala Yojana’ has strengthened the lives of the poor, marginalised, Dalits, Tribal communities. This initiative is playing a central role in social empowerment,” he said.”Till 2014, only 13 crore families had Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) connection, which mostly consists of rich people. In last four years 10 crore new connections have been added for the benefit of the poor. When I was young and my mother would be cooking, we remember the smoke. I also remember the pains she took so that us, her little children to inhale the smoke,” the prime minister added. Ujjwala Yojana was launched by Prime Minister Modi on May 1, 2016, in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh.Under this scheme, 5 crore LPG connections will be provided to BPL families with a support of Rs.1600 per connection in the next three- year. Rs. 8000 Cr. has been allocated towards the implementation of the scheme.

Can you ensure Karnataka gets a working Govt before you leave? BJP asks Rahul Gandhi

On Sunday, the BJP’s official Twitter handle replied to Rahul Gandhi after he mocked his trolls saying he was going abroad for her mother’s treatment.Taking a jibe at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Sunday urged social media trollers not to get “worked up” as he is going to accompany his mother Sonia Gandhi abroad for an annual medical check-up and will be back soon. The Congress president, who will be leaving tonight along with her mother, took to Twitter and said, “Will be out of India for a few days, accompanying Sonia ji to her annual medical checkup. To my friends in the BJP social media troll army: don’t get too worked up…I’ll be back soon!”This led the BJP twitter handle to write back: “We wish well for Sonia ji’s health. Women of Karnataka also await Cabinet formation so that the state Govt can start serving them. Can you ensure Karnataka gets a working Govt before you leave. Everyone on social media hopes that you will keep us entertained from there too .”The tweet is in response to social media users who target the Congress chief on various issues, including his foreign visits.Sonia Gandhi’s health has been in the news for quite some time. Recently, on March 23, the United Progressive Alliance chairperson, who was in Shimla with her daughter Priyanka Vadra, was rushed to New Delhi after she felt ill. ‘Mann Ki Baat’: PM Modi urges people to shun plastics

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today urged the people to shun low-grade plastic and polythene, saying it was creating a negative impact on the environment, wildlife and the health of the people. He asked the people to observe the World Environment Day on June 5 with vigour, and that it was time to concentrate on tree plantation.Planting saplings is not enough, people should ensure that they care for a plant till it becomes a tree, Modi said.”Protecting environment and being sensitive towards nature should come naturally. The recent dust storms accompanied by rains was unseasonal. The climate pattern led to the loss of life and property. It is a result of change in weather pattern,” he said in his monthly ‘Mann ki baat’ radio address.”Whenever we face a torrid summer, or floods, incessant rains or unbearable cold, everybody becomes an expert, analysing global warming and climate change. But does empty talk bring about any solutions? Being sensitive towards nature, protecting nature, should come naturally to us; these virtues should be embedded in our ‘sanskar’ (culture),” the prime minister said.He said India was proud to host the World Environment Day this year, which is a major achievement for the country. It, he said, was an acknowledgment of India’s efforts to lead the world in reducing the effects of climate change.”The theme this year is ‘beat plastic pollution’. I appeal to you not to use low grade plastic and polythene and understand the importance of the theme. It (use of plastic) leaves a negative impact on our nature, the wildlife and our health,” Modi said.He said when the country speaks of climate justice or plays a major role in the Cop21 and Paris agreements or when it unites the whole world through the medium of International Solar Alliance, they all are rooted in fulfilling the dream of Mahatma Gandhi.”On this environment day, let all of us give it a good thought as to what can we do to make our planet cleaner and greener. What innovative things can we do,” he said.Modi also referred to the International Yoga Day on June 21.Quoting an ancient text, he said practicing yogic exercises on a regular basis leads to imbibing benefic attributes which stand by our side like relatives and friends. The practice of yoga leads to building up of courage, which always protects us like a father. The practice of yoga leads to germination of a sense of forgiveness in the same manner as a mother has for her children and mental peace becomes our permanent friend, Modi said. The prime minister appealed to the people to adopt the legacy of yoga and create a healthy, happy and harmonious nation.

Karnataka CM Kumaraswamy says some issues with Congress over portfolio allocation

Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy on Saturday said there are some “issues” on portfolio allocation with his party’s coalition partner Congress but it is not something that will pull down the government. He also said the expansion of his Cabinet would take place once state Congress leaders get an approval from their high command.”..Portfolios have not been allocated. There are some issues regarding portfolios, but it is not an issue that will pull down the government…,” Kumaraswamy told reporters here.Responding to questions on portfolio allocation and demand for a farm loan waiver, he said, “I will try not to take up an issue as a prestige issue and try to solve a problem..Otherwise I will see. I will not stick to this post, leaving my self esteem.”Parleys began between the Congress and the JD(S) on the issue of Cabinet expansion soon after Kumaraswamy proved his three-day-old government’s majority on the floor of the Assembly on Friday.Karnataka Congress leaders on Saturday left for New Delhi by a chartered plane to discuss with the high command the issues relating to Cabinet expansion and portfolio allocation.According to sources, Kumaraswamy had met former chief minister and Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister Parameshwara and Congress general secretary in-charge of Karnataka K C Venugopal before they left for Delhi. The chief minister also clarified that he would not be going to Delhi to meet Congress president Rahul Gandhi and his mother Sonia Gandhi.”State Congress leaders have to get approval from their central leadership, that’s the reason they are going to Delhi today. Once they come back cabinet expansion will happen smoothly,” he said.It has already been decided that Congress would have 22 ministers and JDS 12 in the new cabinet.Kumaraswamy hit out at state BJP leader B S Yeddyurappa for his call to support the party’s state-wide bandh call on Monday for alleged failure of the government in announcing farm loan waiver as promised by him earlier.”I’m with you (people). I don’t have any personal wish. I have become the chief minister not with a selfish motive…,” he said, noting that there was “no question” of goingback on his announcement earlier on farm loan waiver. He said he had already spoken to Congress leaders on the issue of farm loan waiver as he had to take them into confidence.”I should also understand the financial situation before taking the decision. I cannot do it alone,” he added.

It looks like we will make history: Indian-origin PM Leo Varadkar after Ireland looks set to reverse abortion ban

Ireland’s Indian-origin Prime Minister Leo Varadkar today declared that the country was set to make history as exit polls indicated a landslide victory for the ‘Yes’ vote to repeal the country’s stringent abortion laws in a landmark referendum.According to an exit poll published by The Irish Times’, 68 per cent voted in favour of abolishing the eighth amendment to the Irish Constitution that gives an unborn child and its mother equal rights to life. More than 4,500 voters were interviewed by Ipsos/MRBI as they left polling stations yesterday, with the highest ‘Yes’ vote expected in Dublin at 77 per cent. The results of the referendum will be confirmed later today after the count is completed.”It’s looking like we will make history,” said Varadkar, as the exit poll results poured in.While the two main parties of Ireland – Fine Gael and Fianna F il – did not take official positions on the referendum, politicians were permitted to campaign on a personal basis and Varadkar had been campaigning strongly in favour of a Yes vote.”It has been an honour to be on this journey with you and to work #togetherforyes Thank you to everyone who voted today. Democracy in action, he said in an online message on Friday.Savethe8th – which led the ‘No’ campaign, has effectively conceded defeat. What Irish voters did yesterday (Friday) is a tragedy of historic proportions. However, a wrong does not become right simply because a majority support it, it said in a statement.Thousands of Irish people living abroad flew home to cast their vote in the historic referendum. The #hometovote push online grew steadily for several days leading up to the vote. The hashtag filled up social media as Irish citizens boarded planes in Buenos Aires, Bangkok, Tokyo, Sydney, Los Angeles, New York and from all across Europe and the UK.Turnout was on course to be one of the highest for a referendum in Ireland, possibly topping the 61 per cent who voted in the plebiscite that backed same-sex marriage in the country 2015.Penny Mordaunt, the UK’s minister for women and equalities, welcomed the forecasted result. She tweeted, “Based on the exit poll, a historic & great day for Ireland, & a hopeful one for Northern Ireland. That hope must be met”.Acknowledging an equal right to life for both the unborn child and the mother, the eighth amendment effectively prohibited termination in almost all cases, including rape, incest or fatal foetal abnormality. One of the key cases influencing the debate on abortion in Ireland was that of Indian dentist Savita Halappanavar, who died of sepsis in a hospital in Galway after being denied an abortion during a protracted miscarriage in 2012.Her husband Praveen Halappanavar had told her inquest that she requested a termination but was refused because the baby’s heart was still beating. A midwife manager at Galway University Hospital confirmed that she toldHalappanavar a termination could not be carried out because Ireland was a Catholic country . The inquest into her death returned a verdict of medical misadventure.I hope the people of Ireland remember my daughter Savita on the day of the referendum, and that what happened to her won’t happen to any other family, her father Andanappa Yalagi said from his home in Karnataka. Her death had triggered a massive debate in the country over the issue of life-saving abortions and resulted in a new law that allows abortions under extreme circumstances. The Irish parliament voted to legalise abortion in cases of medical emergencies as well as the risk of suicide in July, 2013.The referendum this week will take that further, and if the ‘Yes’ vote wins, the existing article of the Constitution which was inserted in 1983 and the 1992 additions will be replaced with this text: Provision may be made by law for the regulation of termination of pregnancy. The Catholic church had strongly opposed repealing the amendment and Irish bishops warned in a joint statement that We believe that the deletion or amendment of this article can have no other effect than to expose unborn children to greater risk and that it would not bring about any benefit for the life or health of women in Ireland.” PTI AK KUN KUN

Hell hath no fury like a mother scorned: Woman chases away leopard who attacked her daughter in Tamil Nadu

A woman bravely fought off a leopard to save her 11-year-old daughter at Valparai in the district, police said today.Thirty-year-old Muthulakshmi, along with her daughter Sathya, were picking firewood in the backyard of their house last night, when the feline pounced on the girl and began dragging it away by her neck, they said.Immediately, Muthulakshmi hit the leopard so hard with the firewood that the animal let go of the girl and fled into the jungle, the police said.Sathya sustained injuries on the neck and was taken to the government hospital at Pollachi, they added. On hearing this, forest department personnel decided to trap the leopard, which reportedly has been on the prowl in the area for over the past 10 days or more.A fortnight ago, there were reports that a woman at Kanchamalai was a victim of a similar attack, sources said.

National Herald case: Court allows Swamy to summon papers

A Delhi court on Saturday allowed Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramanian Swamy to summon those documents, officials after examination, as evidence in the National Herald case. The court has also disallowed Swamy’s petition in the case seeking Congress President Rahul Gandhi and his mother Sonia Gandhi to either admit or deny the documents filed by him on whether they are originals.Meanwhile, Swamy told ANI, “What Court is saying is that instead of accused confirming or denying, you move the evidence becoming a witness yourself and summon documents and witnesses who are competent and at that stage, we’ll decide on the admissibility of the documents.”Swamy, petitioner in the case had filed three applications in which he had accused Rahul and Sonia Gandhi and others of allegedly misappropriating funds. On January 20, the court of metropolitan magistrate Ambika Singh had ordered the documents submitted by the petitioner in the case, Swamy, to be kept in a sealed cover till next hearing.Swamy, in his plea, alleged that the Congress party granted an interest-free loan of Rs. 90.25 crore to Associated Journals Limited (AJL), owner of the National Herald newspaper. In November last year, the two Congress leaders filed their response to the application filed by Swamy. In the response, they stated that the application filed by Swamy was not bonafide and filled with the sole object of “delaying the proceedings in a lifeless case”.

After uproar, Kerala’s Left govt asks Dr Kafeel Ahmad Khan to hold his visit

After facing a criticism from the Opposition parties, the Kerala government took a U-turn on inviting Dr Kafeel Ahmad Khan, an accused in death of over 33 children at the BRD Medical College in Gotakhpur, to the state for serving Nipah virus victims.Even after sending him air tickets to fly down to Kerala on Friday, Dr Kafeel was asked to hold his visit due to the visit of experts from the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences to the affected areas.Earlier, the Kerala government had quickly responded to Dr Khan’s offer to serve Nipah virus victims at the government hospital in Kozhikode. But the BJP and the Congress had slammed the government for inviting a doctor who has been implicated in the deaths of several children and was out on bail.Dr Khan said that he was deeply saddened by the development. “I am really really upset today. I have been informed by the state government of Kerala to hold my travel plan for 2-3 days. So I am cancelling my reservations,” said he in a statement.”It seems that being a socialist is a difficult choice considering the current affairs in our country. It all seems a bit alien to me – why can’t I serve my country men? reacted Dr Khan.Dr Khan had written to the Director General of Medical Education Dr KK Gupta on Thursday seeing his permission to visit Kerala to serve Nipah virus victims. After suspension on August 22, he was attached to the DGME office. The Principal, BRD Medical College Dr Ganesh Kumar had said on Thursday that Dr Khan cannot offer his medical services in any hospital without prior permission from the DGME.Dr Khan said he faced real emotional time since he had to convince his family members to expose himself to Nipah virus. “But my mother finally agreed and said that I got you after nine months and again you are leaving me? I give you permission to go as you are going there to save somebody’s life only… I have to think as a mother,” he said.Dr Khan claimed that his elder brother was also going along with him in spite of knowing the risk. “But in spite of such constraints I will not change my motto and will keep pitching in with help wherever required,” he said.
