Jayanti Ravi: The Sunday food-crawl @ Sattvik

During my childhood years, ‘Beautiful Sunday’ was a very popular song by Usha Uthup. Over the years, across the world, Sundays have come to be a day of leisure, fun with family, for outings, household chores and so on. A few Sundays ago, with our extended family from the US, we decided to go on a food-crawl at the Sattvik food festival in Ahmedabad.Relishing and, at times, braving the wintery yet piercing sun, the first stop was for some spicy yet satisfying Kahwa, a spicy tea, all the way from Kashmir. The experience of Sattvik was one of having wholesome, healthy food with some very refreshing look, feel and presentation. Prof Anil Gupta, who along with Rameshbhai Patel has instituted Sattvik, thought of this very innovative way of tingling the imagination of people. They realised that a way to a human being’s heart and mind is through her stomach. Presenting virtuous, innovative and largely organic food to them would ignite their innovative quotient. And, voila, Sattvik took birth, fifteen years ago, and has been growing steadily over the years. To really bring in novelty, freshness and wholesome nutrition in the traditional food festival, the organisers have, over the years, made some rules. For example, none of the dishes at Sattvik have Maida, there is no non-vegetarian food or deep frying and no caterers or roadside vendors. This also brings farmers selling organic produce and consumers directly in contact. These farms are regularly tested and audited for ensuring that this is authentic organic food. Rameshbhai Patel adds that this is not an event but is a platform of positive energy. In his words, this has released a great deal of creativity and entrepreneurial skills of rural and urban women as well. This year’s festival had another special feature where young students of MG Science College prepared Mushroom Lassi and soup. While crawling across this treasure land of food, I especially savoured Konkani Sol-kadi, Thali-peeth, Pooran-poli and some tender Ponk. The food from Dangs, especially the Nagli or Ragi preparations, dishes of Desi maize from PanchMahals were a big hit. The special entries for the food contest this year were Muthiya made of Beet leaves, Rotis made of raw bananas, pudding made with Tulsi or holy thyme, Chikki made of Guava and berries, Phirni or kheer made of barley flour. The healthy beverages included queer and unusual drinks such as juice of Sattu, soup of lemon and coriander, Saptaparni or Alistonia shorbet and Hibiscus tea. Over hundred traditional dishes were available across the eighty stalls of traditional food.As shared by Rameshbhai, such initiatives also help shape the behavioural preferences of people. As seen, many people today prefer multigrain flour, Nagli biscuits and products as well as brown rice and such other healthy food grains. Such events also help the dividends and earnings directly reach the pockets of villagers, rather than going to middlemen or contractors. As we collectively decide to parse and redefine ‘safe and nutritious’ foods, such food festivals at various levels play a very important role in shaping people’s choices and behaviour. The sprouting and mushrooming of such food festivals across various cities, towns and villages of the country would go a long way in making Sattvik food more acceptable and attractive. Expressing our deep gratitude for the inspiring work started by Prof Anil Gupta and Rameshbhai Patel, let’s hope this movement spreads across the country. That way, our Sundays could be spiced with some exotic, healthy and fun food for the belly and soul.

Curiosity triggers compassion when it comes to generation collaboration

There are times when we get stuck in major policy debates because we are too convinced of the position we have taken. How do we overcome the logjam in such situations?Let me take a concrete case of the recent efforts to galvanise the administrative machinery of 115 most economically backward districts to fast track in provision of basic needs and improve productivity there. They are also called as aspirational districts. Why have these regions remained economically backward is a reason that has not been adequately asked. Ideally each district have Shodhyatras, learning walks in every block to understand the roots of market and state failure one would notice perhaps that in many cases the mismatch between allocative rules and community constraints that have led to present situation. One may also find that resources in which these regions are rich have never been mapped. We have only focused on what these region lacked and therefore provide them.A genuine curiosity liberates us from the constraints of known answers top easy to know questions. If we move towards hitherto unasked questions, we may find so far unknown answers. The beauty is that many of these answers will require collaboration among actors who may have never worked together. For instance, if a curious collector asks a question about the unexploited or under exploited resources in her district she might find unique skills, biodiversity, rocks & soils, crafts and traditional food recipes/formulations, uncultivated foods etc; just as flex seed earlier consumed by horses became a functional food because of its nutritional and health restoring properties, similarly many new foods ignored so far might be found. Likewise, there might be skills such as wood carving or stone sculpting or bamboo jewellery making which may find consumers among urban markets globally. When does a resource become an opportunity depends upon intensity of curiosity and willingness to collaborate. If your curiosity tells you what to do, the collaboration helps in finding how to do.Take the case of education. If healthy elderly people are invited to schools to talk about the wisdom of traditional foods, it is possible that children will become curious to find more information. Curiosity triggered in school, may lead to conversation at home and parents may take appropriate action at market place. Curiosity may trigger therefore a conversational change of action which may reach right upto the policy makers. One of the southern states recently announced incorporation of millets in Mid Day Meal Scheme. Honeybee Network and SRISTI has been campaigning for it more than 2 decades. Unless, individual curiosity is transformed into institutional curiosity, large scale public policy changes seldom takes place. If you think strongly about a need for change for the larger social good, don’t expect people to accept your view merely because you are asserting it loudly. To trigger their curiosity which may help in discovering same answers that you are searching for and then the convergence of curious minds may lead to desirable change.

Systemic suppression and a stable society

I am hearing news that the e-challan system for traffic offenders is discontinued. My gut reaction is that this public appeasement move has its root in election performance evaluation, but I personally read it as a disastrous one for the same objective.Traffic is the most tangible part of how we experience our cities, so a decision that is surely going to cause chaos is likely to spread a sense of governance failure and the ruling party may fare lot worse in next election. If we rise above local context, there is no doubt that every democratic government with central idea of offering indirect self-governance is expected to respond to public opinions. Feedback-based correction is process that should be improving systems over time. While, in theory, a rollback-based democratic system shows potential to self-improve over time, the time has come to factor in a new development and understand that the same process, under a state of improved expression of personal opinions, could be completely counter-productive.We need to cognise that much cherished concept of democracy is based on a false premise that people can respond to a system by understanding the greater-good dimension of rules of that form the system. But it is also worst kept secret that humans have very little cognition of greater good at individual level. It is only under the peer pressure of society that brain is able to switch on the greater-good mode.If we put together the above facts, it is strange that democracies have emerged and provided us greedy self-obsessed apes with some of the largest collectives built around democratic constitutions of greater-good theme. If we try to look for the explanation of this counter-intuitive phenomenon, the answer may lay in a practical dimension linked with scale. In simple terms, systems are large and individual is small. So, the communication between individual and system is extremely difficult, if not impossible. When humanity began its tryst with democracy, it was nearly impossible for an individual to make his/her voice heard by the system without gathering a momentum of many others with same opinion.Though it sounds like a limitation hindering feedback, there is a strong possibility that it is a critical requirement for a system like democracy.Democracy works only if a human being’s social brain tuned to greater-good participates in the feedback loop. And, that can happen only if individual opinions are suppressed through a mechanism. The systemic suppressor of individual opinion till now has been the practical limitation of communication between citizens and systems; but, with technology breaching this communication barrier, there is a dramatic shift in the context that may have disruptive and destructive potential. With waves of feedback from individual opinions rolling the sea, ship of democracy is in troubled waters and may capsize before we know it.As youth living in cyber-reality (that provides a forum of expression for every individual opinion) is getting increasingly angry with what they perceive as systemic oppression, a stage is getting set with Matrix responding to it with autocratic leaders armed with technology of suppression. There is no doubt that we are heading into an era of conflict, so we need to take a serious stock of the situation. In the devil and the deep sea situation we are in, though it appears counter-intuitive, I feel that systemic suppression is a lesser price to pay. As technology advancement requires stable social order, systemic suppression has a greater chance of allowing us to find a technological solution that will lead us to form better and more equitable organisational system in long run.Let us understand that selfishness and altruism are both natural to us but are context dependant in expression. So, if systemic suppression leads to a stable society, it will also automatically lead to the same goal in long run.

Sagarika Shah: Let your relationship soar

Today being Uttrayan, I can’t help comparing relationships to kites. Strong and sturdy relationships like kites go a long way. Just as a good kite can sustain a string battle, so can relationships. They are never threatened by external factors. Right dimensions make a good kite and the same applies to relationships. There’s something about kites which makes them appear free spirited, bright and happy. Relationships need to be similar – gliding happily and effortlessly.Efforts on part of both partners keep a relationship going. But if it requires constant efforts, its not worth it. Any budding relationship goes through teething troubles. But once that is sorted, intermittent fine tuning is enough for it to function smoothly. Continuous hard work saps the energy levels of persons involved. Any bond which is mentally draining is a sign of toxicity. Couples generally take a few years to understand each other. But thereafter, if one still must be mindful of putting in energies for its survival, it certainly is a toxic one. Relationships are never easy. The point here is, working towards it continuously will not only corrode it but also corrode the couple and their wellbeing. I am neither encouraging passivity nor inviting complacence but only driving home the fact that right efforts at the right time to make a relationship right should be the order of the day.The essence of Uttrayan is to be altruistic. If every couple imbibes being altruistic – well, not in its literal sense, but by being overtly generous, this generosity can help them scale great heights together. By putting the partner first, one can be generous. By forgiving one’s partner one can be generous. By adjusting and compromising sometimes, one can be generous. By merely ‘letting go’ one can be generous. Pinning down one’s ego, being large hearted, accepting one’s partner as is and being empathetic are all deeds of generosity. Generosity is a subset of kindness. Being kind never hurts. Practising kindness in all walks of life can be life changing. Any relationship can blossom on the basis of kindness and generosity even with other elements missing.I earnestly hope you make your relationship as lovely as this festival today. While you soar high with free spirit, kindness and generosity, let the bad elements exploiting your relationship go fly a kite too. Happy Makar Sankranti!!

Palghar teacher translates books into Warli dialect for tribal kids

With a view to make learning easy for hundreds of tribal students in and around Palghar, a school teacher from a zilla parishad school in Palghar has translated all the school text books in the local dialect. Rajan Garud, who teaches at the zilla parishad school in Khorichapada in Palghar district, has translated the study material in Warli — which is the local dialect of the tribal community residing in the area. Garud recently exhibited his unique teaching experiment at the Shikshanaachi Wari — an initiative of the state education department showcasing innovative teaching methods held in Ratnagiri. “All the students that come to our school belong to the Warli community and speak their local dialects. For them, any other language, including Marathi, is like a foreign language. Due to this language barrier , they find it difficult to cope with studies. In order to aid the whole learning process , I came up with the idea of translating textbooks into their local language,” said Garud. In the beginning, Garud translated the textbooks for class 1 and self published those books. He then slowly began teaching all the concepts in different subjects with the help of the local language. “Before teaching A for Apple, we taught kids different alphabets through words in the local language. Slowly, we then transitioned from Warli to Marathi and then English.” Garud now plans to expand his work to other regional dialects and encourage teachers from other schools take up similar initiatives. “There are many such communities which find it difficult to study due to the language barrier. If such language-friendly material is made available to all, it would be a great thing for encouraging education,” he said.

‘Saying ‘go and die’ does not amount to abetment of suicide’

Merely stating that one should “go and die” does not amount to abetment to suicide, the sessions court held while granting bail to a 35-year-old Kurla resident, who was arrested for abetting the suicide of his wife. The court referred to a citation produced by the defence advocate, which specified that there are other circumstances too which should be taken under consideration to prove the guilty.Seemon Mosapugo had approached the court seeking for bail. According to the prosecution’s case, the accused was allegedly having an extramarital affair, because of which he was ignoring his marital and parental responsibilities. The accused had allegedly left the wife in such a position that she had to buy vegetables on credit from the vendors. On December 4, 2017, when he came home around 8am, the duo had a verbal fight. The accused, in a fit of rage, asked her to go to her parents or die.The victim left her house with her child, dropped him off his school and later set herself ablaze and jumped into Mithi river. An abetment to suicide case was registered against the accused at Kurla police station. The court, after going through the evidence, held that whether it was a case of abetment to suicide or not will be considered at the time of trial.

<!–end of artlbotbor–><!–end of artlsocl–>Written Bydna Correspondent <!–end of artlbotbor–>Sunday 14 January 2018 6:10 IST<!–end of articllftpbx–>Jammu and Kashmir Education Minister Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari asked the Army on Saturday to confine its role to security-related issues and “not make unnecessary comments beyond its constitutional mandate”. The sharp reaction came a day after Army Chief General Bipin Rawat said the education system in Jammu and Kashmir’s government schools has been corrupted.”If you go to any Kashmir school you will find two maps — one of India and the other of J&K. Why should there be a separate map of J&K? Then there should be a map of every state,” Rawat had said. “This leads children into believing that I am part of this country, but I also have a separate identity.””He (General Rawat) is a professional I have no doubts on his professionalism. I do not think he is an educationist and he will give sermons on education. I do not think any society accepts sermons on education from non-academicians. I will welcome sermons from academicians on how to run the education system,” said Bukhari.Bukhari said trespassing the defined mandates tantamount to committing brazen injustice with duties assigned to people by the Constitution.”I think those sermonising us should do their duties in a more professional manner so as to ease the sufferings of the common man in Jammu and Kashmir. Army has its own role and let them play the same with utmost responsibility,” he said.

Caste(ing) ouch! Development takes a back seat

Contrary to their claims of contesting Ajmer by-elections on the issue of development, both Congress and BJP have been putting more emphasis on caste equations. Both the parties have been eyeing voters from castes other than their core vote bank. The BJP clearly indicated that it was eyeing Jats, who are around 2.5 lakh, by fielding Ramswaroop Lamba who is the son of Sanwar Lal Jat whose death a few months ago necessitated by-election on this seat. The BJP is hoping to cash in on sympathy vote. The ruling party is also trying hard to pacify Rajput community. While parliamentary affairs minister Rajendra Singh Rathore was made election in-charge, the party also managed to bring back Surendra Singh Shekhawat, former chairman of municipality who rebelled against the party in the municipal corporation elections. Rawat community is considered traditional BJP supporter. The party asked five-time MP from this seat Rasa Singh Rawat to become active in election campaign. Chief minister Vasundhara Raje even called him to Jaipur to have a word personally. Moreover, former district president (rural) Navin Sharma’s suspension was revoked who had contested against the party in the last assembly election from Masuda. Similarly, former MLA Devi Shanker Bhutra who contested against the party from Beawar was also re-inducted into party.Political experts also believe that nine Muslim candidates have entered into the fray to divide minority votes at the behest of a minister. Interestingly, all these candidates belong to different assembly segments. Not just the BJP, but the Congress is also relying on caste management. The party fielded Raghu Sharma to make inroads into BJP’s traditional Brahmin vote base. The Congress considers that Muslims would vote for it still they are not taking any chance and hence the young leader Wajid Cheeta was taken back into party. The Congress would be in a comfortable spot if it manages to rope in Rajputs and Brahmins along with its traditional Muslim vote bank. Also, BJP has deployed MLAs to keep an eye on voters of every caste. Legislators from different castes have been sent to Ajmer constituency to stay in touch with voters of their respective communities and if they find it necessary tours of union and state ministers will be arranged.

Capital’s posh markets struggle to shake off sealing blues

The old couple that sells gajras in Khan Market daily after sunset look bored. Braving chilly winds, they hope for some late night patrons to buy their flowers. “Weekends are good for us as we make more money than usual,”the man says as his wife nods in agreement. But they know, like the fate that befell on the toniest market in the Capital four days ago, business is currently slow for them as well.A few kilometres away from Khan, as it is colloquially addressed, lies its less posh yet equally popular cousins, Defence Colony (Def Col) and Meherchand Market. Dotted with high end restaurants and designer stores, they mirror the same story — of downed shutters, sporadic shoppers and diners. After the New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) sealed establishments in these three markets over the past two weeks for building by-laws violation, these places have turned into a pale shadow of their past. Normally teeming with activity through the week with a steady stream of revelers out to shop, socialise or just soak in the energy, shops owners are now hoping that they can soon return with the same gusto.DNA visited Khan, Def Col and Meherchand on Friday as it inched towards the end of the week. Hoping to find a throbbing carousal of Delhiites out to unwind with drinks and food, DNA passed through the cobbled alleys of Khan that surprisingly had a lot of room for a Friday night to walk around without skirting on the sides. Equally bemusing was not being asked to wait for a table in any eatery, something that is not the scenario normally here on weekends as restaurants are packed to the brim.”There is less rush since the sealing happened four days ago. While restaurants are still operational and only some part of few of them has been closed, people are still keeping away because they assume eateries have been shut. Business has also been affected by about 10 to 15 per cent,” said the manager of an Italian joint who did not wish to be named.Moving to Def Col and Meherchand, parking is a breeze since there aren’t too many visitors. The mood is sombre and the markets look forlorn like a beloved awaiting the return of his sweetheart. No more beelines outside famous restaurants serving from Indian to Continental to French. Also missing are fashion enthusiasts that hop from one store to another in Meherchand to lay their hands on the latest sartorial options.Says Jagdish Gupta, secretary, Defence Colony Market Association, “It is painful to go through all this when we have followed all the necessary rules. We fear that as days pass by, and if there is no timely relief, we will be struggling to stay afloat with exorbitant rentals etc.”BIZ DOWN BY 15%The manager of an Italian eating joint at Khan Market said business has been affected by about 10 to 15 per cent Parking is now a breeze at the otherwise congested Defence Colony and Meherchand markets, while the mood is sombre

AAIB & ONGC wing to hold inquiries into Pawan chopper crash

The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), which is a division of the ministry of civil aviation, and Oil & Natural Gas Corporation’s (ONGC) wing for health, safety and rescue will hold two separate inquiries into the crash of a Pawan Hans helicopter which had five ONGC personnel and two pilots onboard.Union minister of state for civil aviation Jayant Sinha tweeted that AAIB will launch a thorough inquiry. He further said, “Deeply anguished by tragic Pawan Hans/ONGC helicopter accident of the Mumbai coast. Search and rescue operations are underway.’’An ONGC spokesman told DNA, “The health, safety and rescue wing will inquire into procedural lapses, if any, which led to today’s crash. It is a regular practice that before helicopter takes off every test is undertaken. Being a high risk industry, ONGC’s topmost priority is safety of its employees. For ONGC personnel and VIPs, it is mandatory to attend safety briefing and watch safety video before boarding the helicopter.’’ He informed that the AAIB probe is expected to help access the black box of the helicopter and thereby ascertain the technical cause of Saturday’s crash. On the other hand, the inquiry by health, safety and rescue inquiry will reveal shortcomings, if any, in adherence of safety and aviation procedures.Further, the spokesman said a detailed health, safety and environment dossier for each work centre was provided to all asset and basin managers and services chiefs for monthly monitoring. Saturday’s was the third mishap after 2003 when 23 ONGC employees were killed in a helicopter crash on the Arabian Sea in the offshore Heera Panna Oilfield’s Neelam area, while in 2015, Pawan Hans pilots deployed on ONGC duty were killed during training.ONGC CHOPPER CRASHESNovember 4, 2015: Pawan Hans helicopter hired by ONGC to ferry its officials from Mumbai to its offshore oilfield crashes off the coast of Mumbai. Bahubali 2 to be introduced as case study in IIMA

In a first, a case study on Bahubali 2 will be introduced in one of the electives at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. The students of Contemporary Film Industry – a business perspective, through the case study, will learn the power of sequel and how a sequel can derisk the movie as a marketing concept.IIMA was the first business school in Asia to introduce a comprehensive elective course on the movie industry and more than 700 students have opted for the course. The course gives a 360 degree view of the creative industry space with special focus on movie production.Confirming the same, professor Bharathan Kandaswamy said, “I will be introducing Bahubali 2 as a case study in the new academic year and it will essentially focus on the power of a sequel and how a sequel can derisk the movie as a marketing concept. There is a research from Stanford university which says that a prequel is always considered better than the sequel but a sequel makes more money than a prequel. Sequels make more money because the producers become more marketing savvy based on the success of a prequel. My course this time will focus on marketing mantras evolving around sequels and how decisions need to be taken that respect art and creativity of a movie and yet are able to make money. Blending art, business and technology is the key.”A comprehensive course on the Business of Television and Online Media has also been designed and will be offered from next academic year. This course has become very relevant and useful as Television and Digital video platforms are technologically converging. MBA students can add significant value by designing new business models and operational processes for these new businesses, he added.CFI course had invited several industry professionals such as Aamir Khan, Prahlad Kakkar, Madhavan, Dhanush, Shreya Saran, Mr Sudhanshu Vats and many others to share their insights and experience which gives students new lessons from a very different space. This time, Meenakshi Shedde, who is a National Award winning film critic, curator for Indian films and South Asia consultant to several leading Film Festivals, spoke to students at length about the role of film festivals.

Manja clips wings of close to 100 birds in a day

Jivdaya, an organisation that works to rescue injured birds and animals received 98 injured birds on Saturday, a day before Uttarayan. Almost all the birds were injured by manja and among them was an egyptian vulture too.The forest department’s helpline meanwhile got 32 calls for bird rescue. Sherwin Everett, curator with Jivdaya, said the number seems low compared to last year but it would not be right to comment until Uttarayan and an extra day of celebration is over. “That is when we will know how many birds have been injured. If tomorrow the weather is good, we can expect injuries to go up,” said Everett. It should be noted that Jivdaya alone has treated around 600 injured birds since the beginning of this year. The forest department has set up a team of 1000 volunteers and over 30 NGOs that will be helping in the rescue of injured birds. The department, following an order of the high court, has denied permission for any NGO to operate treatment facilities close to residential premises in the city. Since most of the NGOs operate their businesses close to some or the other residential premises, the HC order has effectively prevented most of them from setting up treatment centres in city. A forest department official said, this time all the injured birds will be brought to the treatment centres set up by the forest department. “The NGOs that earlier used to treat the birds will now lend a helping hand to the veterinary centres of the government, which will be treating the birds,” he said.Rajesh Panchal, of Sanjeevani, that helps injured birds quickly reach treatment centres, said that they have so far received 18 calls in a day. “We have 30 volunteers and most of us operate in the old city. The calls will increase tomorrow as people are not going to give up on kite flying,” said Panchal.HELPING BIRDSSanjeevani: 9429600108Forest dept: 1962Forest dept: 7600009846 / 7600009845Sajag: 7878171727

Dahanu Boat Mishap: How an ambulance meant to rescue turtles helped save lives

Wahurwagh then in his next two trip ferried 15 more students from the capsized boat to the hospital and by the time he returned a few ambulances and other vehicles too had reached and had begun helping. “I am glad that our ambulance came to the rescue of people and saving lives has to be the priority during such tragedies,” shared Dr Dinesh Vinherkar who is associated with WCAWA. Meanwhile Wahurwagh waited and also later along with other volunteers from WCAWA helped relatives and other family members reach the hospital who rushed to the beach after hearing about the incident. ”

West Bengal: Teenager pregnant after rape seeks permission in court to end life

A teenager in East Midnapore who is pregnant after being raped repeatedly by a fellow villager on the promise of marriage has filed a petition with the local court seeking permission to end her life. The Sutahata police, which received a copy of the petition on Friday evening as a complaint by the girl, said on Saturday that she has appealed to the court for the permission as her life as an unwed mother would be extremely difficult in the rural society.Following the complaint the man’s father was arrested from their house on Saturday as the accused is absconding, the officer-in-charge of the police station said. The man and his family had agreed to the marriage with the girl and therefore her earlier complaint had not been addressed, the police said.A West Bengal Human Rights Commission team visited the 17-year-old in her home at Sutahata during the day and spoke to her and her family. The girl’s mother has also petitioned the court for permission to the family to end their lives in view of the ignominy. Her family had informed their neighbours of her condition and with their intervention the man’s family had agreed to their wedding on November 16 but went absconding with the entire family the day before, the police said quoting her complaint.Though the rest of his family has returned, the man is still absconding. The man was allegedly threatening her and her family over phone, the complaint added.

First-year student in speeding BMW mows down man in DU’s North Campus

Police, on Friday night, arrested a student who mowed down a 50-year-old man, threw him metres into the air. The impact killed the man on spot. The incident took place on Wednesday afternoon, when the student was driving his BMW car in Delhi University’s North Campus. The student was later released on bail, police said. Police officers said they managed to nab the accused through the help of CCTV footage from the area and by tracing some parts of the car which were found at the spot. The accused is said to be a student of Delhi University’s Khalsa College. The deceased, a vagabond, who has been identified as Shiv Nath, was trying to cross the road when he came in front of the speeding vehicle at around 1:30 pm on Wednesday. Locals told police that the impact of the accident was such that the man was thrown in the air.As locals gathered on the spot, the Police Control Room (PCR) was called and Nath was rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead. A crime team that had arrived at the spot immediately checked the CCTV footage from the vicinity and found that it was a BMW sedan, police said. Cars of similar make were soon zeroed in on. Speaking to DNA, DCP North, Jatin Narwal, said the footage also showed the vehicle was speeding towards Kirorimal College from the Kamla Market side.”Local inquiries led to the identification of the car and a police team then found the owner. On inspection it was found that parts of the car’s body, which were recovered from the spot, were missing from the car, which the police had zeroed in on. On questioning the accused, it was revealed that he is a student of Delhi University. He was arrested and the vehicle was seized,” said a senior police officer. The family of the deceased was informed about the accident and his body has been sent for post mortem.

TB patients to get monthly ‘social support’ from govt

The government plans to give Rs 500 a month to Tuberculosis (TB) patients to help them buy nutritious food and compensate them for travel expenses until they are cured of the disease, a health ministry official has said.Under the proposal, the money would be given to patients, who number around 25 lakh, irrespective of their income level. The Expenditure Finance Committee has approved the proposal and sent it to the Mission Steering Group, the official said. The initiative is part of the National Strategic Plan for TB Elimination, with the health ministry aiming to eliminate TB by 2025.”Around 25 lakh patients suffering from tuberculosis will soon be given Rs 500 per month, irrespective of their income level, as social support. A mechanism will be put in place to give the incentives to the patients on the basis of their Aadhaar number and medical documents,” the official said.According to the World Health Organisation, an estimated 2.8 million cases of TB occur in India every year, out of which 1.7 million cases are reported.”The health ministry aims to reduce incidences of TB by 90 per cent by 2025 and reduce mortality due to the disease by 95 per cent by 2030 under the Revised National TB Control Programme,” the official said. The ministry recently rolled out the daily drug regimen to combat the disease across the country.Under the new treatment policy, patients are given fixed drug combinations – three or four drugs in a single pill – daily, instead of thrice a week (intermittent drug regimen).Dosage is determined according to the patient’s body weight. Previously, it was same for all adults, an official said.”Also, children suffering from tuberculosis won’t have to take the bitter tablets anymore as they will be replaced with easily-dissolvable and flavoured drugs,” he said.Since 1997, under the RNTCP, patients were being administered drugs thrice a week. The daily treatment regimen is likely to be more effective with lesser relapses and it is expected to reduce drug-resistance with greater compliance. The WHO revised its TB management guidelines in 2010, recommending that the daily drug regimen be adopted under the RNTCP.According to health ministry data, TB incidences were estimated to be 217 per lakh population in 2015, which reduced to 211 per lakh population in 2016.

ED raids premises linked to Karti, P Chidambaram says officers left ’embarrassed’ and ‘apologetic’

The Congress and its leader P Chidambaram today accused the government of “unleashing vicious vendetta” against the opposition after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) carried out raids at the residence of the former Union minister here in connection with its money laundering probe in the Aircel-Maxis case.P Chidambaram accused the ED of misusing its power at the behest of the government. He said he would not succumb to pressure and continue to speak and write. He spoke to reporters outside his Jorbagh residence here, hours after the ED conducted searches at 10 premises linked to his son Karti Chidambaram in connection with the probe.P Chidambaram termed the raids “a comedy of errors” and claimed the officers were left “embarrassed” and “apologetic” as they could not find anything at his house. “Since they had the search warrant, I did not object to the search but I said I will record my protest that there is no FIR in respect of the scheduled crime…There are obviously no proceeds of crime and the ED has no jurisdiction under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA),” he told reporters. Also readP Chidambaram terms ED raids on son Karti’s houses as ‘comedy of errors’Later, in a statement, he said there is no predicate scheduled offence and hence the ED has no jurisdiction. “Yet the ED, at the behest of the government, continues to misuse its powers. Let the government misuse the ED. I shall neither bend nor break and I shall continue to speak and write,” P Chidambaram said. In a separate statement, AICC in-charge of media Randeep Singh Surjewala said the raids were part of a “continuing vicious vendetta unleashed by Modi government against Congress and other opposition leaders”.He alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government were using agencies including ED and CBI as “captive puppets” to settle political scores and intimidate political opponents. “In fact, ‘raid raj’ has become the ‘DNA’ of the Modi government. We again reiterate that Congress leaders will not be cowed down or bow in face of such malicious and wilful attempts to browbeat and bulldoze,” he said.

Answer why ‘special messenger’ was sent to CJI, Congress to PM Narendra Modi

Latching onto media reports that the prime minister’s principal secretary turned up at the chief justice of India’s residence, the Congress on Saturday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi must answer as to why a “special messenger” was sent to the CJI.TV visuals showed prime minister’s Principal Secretary Nripendra Misra driving to the residence of CJI Dipak Misra. However, the gates were not opened and after waiting for a while, he left. The development came a day after four senior-most judges of the Supreme Court virtually revolted against the CJI, raising questions over “selective” case allocation. After the TV visuals were aired, the Congress was quick to criticise the government.”As PM’s Principal Secretary, Nripendra Misra visits CJI’s residence at 5, Krishna Menon Marg; PM must answer the reason for sending this special messenger to Chief Justice of India,” Congress’s chief spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala tweeted.Terming the concerns raised by the four judges as “unprecedented and sensitive”, the Congress had on Saturday demanded a probe into the issues flagged. On the other hand, the BJP had charged the Congress with “politicising the internal matters” of the judiciary.

SC judges against CJI: There is no crisis, says Justice Ranjan Gogoi

Justice Ranjan Gogoi, one of the four senior Supreme Court judges who virtually revolted against the country’s chief justice over “selective” case allocation and certain judicial orders, on Saturday said “there is no crisis”.”There is no crisis,” he told PTI on the sidelines of a programme, when asked about the way forward to resolve the crisis.Asked whether their act had amounted to a violation of discipline, Gogoi refused to comment, saying, “I have to catch a flight to Lucknow. I cannot talk.”The senior apex court judge was here to attend the eastern regional meet of the state legal services authorities. In an unprecedented move, the four senior Supreme Court judges — justices J Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi, M B Lokur and Kurian Joseph — had called a press conference in New Delhi on Saturday and said the situation in the top court was “not in order” and that many “less than desirable” things had taken place.Unless the institution was preserved, “Democracy will not survive in this country,” they had stated.

SC judges against CJI | Bar Council of India forms delegation to mediate, urges parties against politicising issue

Bar Council of India on Saturday decided to form a 7 member delegation to meet all judges of Supreme Court, including the 4 dissenting senior judges of Supreme Court. Their decision came after a meeting on the wake of unprecedented press conference by 4 senior Supreme Court judges on Friday, where they questioned the conduct of the CJI and claimed that their efforts in convincing the latter to take steps to protect the institution have gone in vain. This lead to legal fraternity getting sharply divided over whether it was proper for four senior SC judges to go public with their grievances. While the government has so far indicated that it would like the judiciary to sort out the matter internally, AG has expressed hope that all the judges would soon be able to bury their hatchet. Bar Council of India has taken the lead to ensure that much needed reconciliation takes place soon. On Saturday, after the press conference, BCI Chairman addressed the press. Also readSC judges against CJI: President Kovind should intervene if judges can’t resolve issue, says Stalin Manan Kumar Mishra said, ” We have unanimously decided to form a 7-member delegation of the Council who will meet Hon. judges of the Supreme Court. We want that the matter be solved at the earliest. As far as MOP is concerned, it must be finalised at the earliest in a proper manner. We will write a letter to the govt for the same but is not that big a matter to be brought in public”BCI Chairman said that they are willing to also negotiate in the issue, but steps should be taken to ensure that judiciary’s image doesn’t get sullied. He also expressed hope saying that it is a family dispute and will soon get solved. Also readSC judges against CJI: Stood up for justice and judiciary, says Justice Kurian Joseph He urged all political parties to refrain from making statements about this issue. Mishra said, ” Prime Minister and law minister had said yesterday itself that it is judiciary’s internal matter and govt won’t be interfering in the matter, and we appreciate the government’s stand”. Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) on Saturday termed the press conference of the four Supreme Court judges as “ill planned” and added that the allegations made by them were not substantial.”If they had to come for a press conference, then they should have said something substantial. Just creating doubts in the minds of people will not serve the interest of the judiciary. I think this was not properly planned,” SCBA president Vikas Singh told ANI.He further opined, “If at all they had anything substantial to say, they should have thought it over first rather than just suggesting something and leaving it to the minds of the people to keep guessing. All of the wild guesses will go all over the country and all kinds of things will be said about the Supreme Court.”With agency inputs
