After Andaman, Delhi Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash may be transferred

Amidst the ongoing protests in the national capital, speculations over the transfer posting of Delhi Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash gained momentum after the transfer orders of Andaman’s Chief Secretary Anindo Majumdar were issued. However, there is no mention about the post he will be handling. A 1985 batch IAS officer, Anindo Majumdar was transferred to Andaman Nicobar Islands in March 2016. According to sources, Majumdar, a senior to the present Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash, will not be given any post under Prakash. The bureaucracy and the AAP government has been at loggerheads since February 2018 after Anshu Prakash was allegedly assaulted by AAP MLAs at CM Arvind Kejriwal’s residence. The incident sparked a cold war between the government and the bureaucracy with IAS officers refuting to attend any regular meetings with the AAP ministers. “Chances are high that he (Majumdar) will be given the charged of Delhi administration and Anshu Prakash will be transferred to some other post. A senior bureaucrat cannot work under a junior officer,” said a senior official.Prakash, a 1986-batch IAS officer of the Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory (AGMUT) cadre was transferred to Delhi in January 2017. Previously, he was working as Additional Secretary in Rural Development in Centre. Prakash served as different capacity such as Transport Secretary as well as Joint Secretary in the Health and Family Welfare department of Delhi government.Majumdar and Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government maintain a sour relationship after the government locked the office of then senior bureaucrat Majumdar in 2016 who had issued an order notifying the appointment of Shakuntala Gamlin as acting chief secretary. Gamlin shot to fame after Kejriwal objected her elevation by Najeeb Jung after Chief Secretary KK Sharma went on leave for 10 days on 13 May. The CM also accused Gamlin of lobbying for power companies. In December 2015, DANICS officers went on mass leave for one day when two special home secretaries were suspended by Delhi Home Minister Satyender Jain.

IIT Kanpur Releases Extended JEE Advanced Merit List on jeeadv.nic.in, 31980 candidates qualify

Following the HRD Ministry’s direction to release a supplementary merit list of JEE (Advanced) this year, the IITs released the list on its official website – jeeadv.nic.in at 4 pm.According to NDTV, the extended JEE Advanced Merit list now has a total of 31980 qualified candidates. The candidates who had appeared for the examination can login at jeeadv.ac.in to check if they have qualified. In a first, the HRD Ministry had issued directions to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) to release a supplementary merit list for admission this year.IIT Kanpur, the organising institute for JEE-Advanced this year, has been asked to release a merit list with the number of candidates, which is twice the number of total seats on offer in each discipline and each category (general and reserved categories). The institute will have to release the supplementary merit list before choice-filling for joint seat allocation for IITs and NITs begins this week.”Responding to requests from students and IIT community to proactively ensure that all reservation seats are duly filled, I have directed @IIT Kanpur conducting JEE advanced to make available candidates, strictly as per merit, twice the number of seats in each category,” Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar tweeted. The number of candidates who qualified the exam has always been at least twice the number of seats on offer. This year, however, the 18,138 students on the merit list are only 1.6 times the total seats, making it the smallest number of qualified candidates since 2012.A total of 1,55,158 candidates appeared in both papers 1 and 2 in JEE (Advanced) 2018. Of this, 18138 candidates have qualified the exam i.e., they scored above the cut-offs required for qualification. This is more than 1.6 times the number of seats that are being offered. The number of students qualifying the exams has seen a huge dip from 2017 when over 50,000 students had made the cut. The dip is being attributed to the fact that there were no bonus marks awarded to students this year unlike the last few years.

JEE Advanced 2018: New merit list to be issued to fill all vacancies in reserved category

The Ministry of Human Resource and Development (HRD) has asked the IIT Joint Admission Board to issue a fresh merit list for the Joint Entrance Exams Advanced (JEE) 2018 with twice the number of students in each discipline and category so that there are no vacancies. In its notice, the ministry said that it is the ‘policy of the Government of India that all the reservation category seats in all disciplines are filled and no vacant seat is left after counselling for admission in IITs’.”It is therefore requested to ensure that a list of candidates, twice the number of seats in each discipline and category is released, strictly as per merit, prior to starting the choice filling through JoSAA,” the notice read. Also readJEE Advance results 2018: Without grace marks success rate shrinksUnion HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar also tweeted about the matter. “Responding to requests from students & IIT Community & to proactively ensure that all reservation seats are duly filled, I have directed @IITKanpur conducting JEE (advanced) to make available candidates, strictly as per merit, twice the number of seats in each category. .If necessary by releasing a supplementary list. (sic).”The JEE results were announced on Sunday morning, but now with the new ruling, it could mean that more students can enter IIT.A total of of 1,55,158 candidates appeared in both papers 1 and 2 in JEE (Advanced) 2018. Delhiites feel AAP government should focus on solving issues

With Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his team of ministers sitting on dharna for almost three days now, residents in the Capital feel that the move is not right. While Kejriwal claimed that the dharna is “for the residents of Delhi”, people feel that the administration should focus more on solving the issues.”All this is a drama. Those who want to work don’t go on strike. This is a political stunt for the upcoming 2019 elections. He wants to fulfill his prime ministerial ambitions. The MLA from our constituency is a minister in the Cabinet, but the groundwork for people of the area is zero. We requested reforms in allocating the ration cards and underground wiring, but there has been no development,” said president of Nabi Karim RWA, Yash Khanagwal. Both Health Minister Satyendar Jain and Deputy CM Manish Sisodia have gone on a hunger strike. “As the CM of Delhi, this isn’t a right step. He is a powerful person and should negotiate rather than going on strikes. He should rise above this level. The Capital should get the status of a state but the path he has chosen isn’t right. His MLAs are (though) easily accessible, but there are more of promises and less of work.” said Anil Arora, president of Geeta Colony RWA.The AAP-led government has been at loggerheads with the bureaucrats. The IAS officers in the Capital are on “protest” since the last four months after Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash was allegedly assaulted by AAP MLAs at Delhi CM’s residence during a meeting. Many people are also of the opinion that the Capital should maintain status quo. President of East Delhi RWA Joint Front, BS Vohra, said “The CM seems allergic to RWAs. He meets other people. The promises haven’t been fulfilled. There are no new buses or CCTVs installed yet. The agreements with RWAs have not been met. Except for electricity and water, there is no notable work. Huge promises were made before the elections and while we are the largest federation in East Delhi, we are still unable to meet the CM.”

India, Pak volunteers to conduct peace march

Volunteers from India and Pakistan will conduct a peace march in an attempt to bring an end to the death of soldiers manning borders of the two countries, increase contact between people from both nations, open roads and even denuclearise the South Asian region. The Indian delegation, led by social activist and Magsaysay awardee Sandeep Pandey will start from Sabarmati Ashram on June 19 and reach Nadeswari Mata Temple on the Indian side on June 30. Several meetings will be held during the march. Personalities such as Professor Anil Gupta, Mallika Sarabhai, MLAs Jignesh Mevani and Naushad Solanki, and activist Prakash N Shah, among others, will support the march. The Pakistani contingent, led by activist Karamat Ali, will gather in Karanchi.“The topmost agenda is to stop deaths of soldiers of both countries,” said Pandey. He also advocated denuclearisation of the South Asia region. “Our animosity with Pakistan is as old as that between North and South Korea. If they can decide to denuclearise, why can’t we,” he said. “More people-to-people contact is the only way to reduce the animosity between the populace of both nations. There should also be a peace ceremony on the border allowing people to interact.”

AAP vs Babus 2.0: IAS officers take down Kejriwal, say ‘all officers working with full vigour’

Even as Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his cabinet colleagues’ ‘sit-in’ protest at LG House entered second day, the IAS officers’ association bluntly called all reports about babus strike in Delhi as ‘baseless’.‘Our attention has been drawn to statements alleging that IAS Offices in GNCTD (Govt of National Capital Territory of Delhi) are on strike for last 4 months. We wish to reiterate and clarify that such reports are baseless and false. All Officers are working with full vigour,’ read the statement tweeted by news agency ANI.The statement is the ultimate faceoff between Delhi Chief Minister and the IAS officers. This is the second time since the Delhi Chief Secretary incident that the AAP government and the bureaucrats have openly squabbled over and issue.Earlier in February, Delhi Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash had alleged that he was assaulted and abused by two Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs at Kejriwal’s residence. Anshu Prakash had complained to Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal that Okhla MLA Amanatullah Khan and another lawmaker attacked him in the presence of Kejriwal during a meeting. In his complaint to DCP (North) seeking action, Prakash alleged that Kejriwal, his deputy Manish Sisodia and 11 AAP MLAs were present at the meeting at the CM’s residence where they threatened to ‘implicate’ him in false cases if the issue of releasing TV advertisements about the AAP government’s achievements was not resolved.Prakash was called by Kejriwal regarding an issue related to advertisements, which were not being released, while the AAP dispensation claimed that the meeting was called to discuss complaints about the distribution of ration. He also claimed he was roughed up. However, the Chief Minister’s office has brushed off the chief secretary’s allegations as “bizarre and baseless”, while Sisodia has said they are “baseless and ludicrous”.The Aam Aadmi Party also launched a counter-attack on Anshu Prakash, accusing him of working at the “behest of the BJP”. Meanwhile, the ruling Aam Aadmi Party is providing ‘proof’ of IAS officers strike for past four months. The letters tweeted by ‘AAP Express’ and RTed by several senior AAP leaders provided details of the “important proposals/matters disposed of/processed in the department” starting from February 26, 2018, to March 4, 2018; from March 26 to April 1; February 19 to February 25; and from March 2 to March 8.

NITI Aayog reconstituted, Smriti Irani dropped

Less than a month after Smriti Irani was shunted out of the prestigious I&B Ministry, Smriti Irani has been now dropped from the special invitee list of country’s premier policy-making body Niti Aayoog. In an official communique, dated 7th June, it is noted that Smriti Irani is no longer part of the list of invitees. The list was made after approval from PM Narendra Modi. According to reports, HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar has replaced Smriti Irani in the list of special invitees. Also included as ex-officio member is MoS for Planning, senior BJP leader Rao Inderjit Singh. The next meeting of Niti Aayog will be held on June 17th, which will be chaired by PM Modi. After a series of controversies including that about awarding Padma awards, Smriti Irani was stripped off the high-profile I&B Ministry on May 15th. She retains the relatively low-profile Textile Ministry. Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore who has impressed one and all as Sports Minister was also made the I&B Minister by PM Narendra Modi. South Mumbai hostels under repair; MLAs may be put up in Chembur

MLAs may be put up in Chembur till their hostels in South Mumbai aren’t constructed. According to Housing Minister Prakash Mehta, the government has identified a few buildings in Chembur, which are close to the Eastern Freeway. It will not take the MLAs more than 20 minutes to reach Vidhan Bhawan during sessions. One of the main reasons for the government to shift the monsoon sessions to Nagpur was the dilapidated MLA hostels and the government not wanting to take any risk. It had even come out with a public notice seeking rented accommodation where the MLAs and MLCs can be put up.When asked, Mehta said, “We have identified a project in Chembur. It is a 10-lakh sq ft construction and belongs to the government. The Chairman of the Legislative Council, the Speaker of the House, and the Parliamentary Affairs Minister have visited the area. Very soon things will be finalised.”The project is spread over several acres of land and is being constructed by a private developer. While some have got the occupation certificate, others are yet to get them.According to a real estate source, a total of 10 buildings comprising 1,221 flats have been constructed. Of these, 162 flats have been occupied, and occupation certificate has been applied for 627 flats, while 432 flats are under construction.A senior government official aware of the development said, “Around two-three months ago the flats were visited by ministers. The total number of flats required for the Legislature is 376 and the flats in Chembur are ready to accommodate as many, so it could be an option.”The government is also planning to have a dedicated bus service for MLAs from Chembur to Mantralaya, so that they don’t face any issue while commuting.

Speak up Mumbai: Nagpur to host Monsoon Session as well this year

When the state of Maharashtra was formed from contiguous Marathi-speaking areas of the then states of Bombay, Madhya Pradesh and Hyderabad, its then capital Nagpur lost its capital status. There was a major discontent among the residents of Vidarbha, who demanded a separate Vidarbha state. To placate the people of Vidarbha, it was decided that one of the sessions of Maharashtra Legislature will be held in the orange city. Since then the winter session of the Maharashtra state Assembly is conducted in Nagpur. However, this year the government has decided to hold monsoon session in Nagpur. The reason being attributed to this shift is the bad condition of the MLA hostels in the city. State housing minister Prakash Mehta said the decision has been taken to prevent any mishap, which might lead to major embarrassment for the government. The responses we received are varied. While most do not have an issue with where the sessions are being held, they feel that issues related to common man must be addressed. Real action, and not mere ‘tokenism’ is what they expect from the session.VOICESWhen Vidarbha was amalgamated with Maharashtra, Nagpur became the second capital of Maharashtra and has been hosting the winter session. Organising monsoon session in Nagpur is a part of a bigger political plot of BJP which aims to make Vidarbha a separate state. However, one must keep in mind the resultant financial burden the State has to bear by organising the monsoon sessions in Nagpur.—Kirtikumar Shinde, KandivaliThe government has decided host monsoon session in Nagpur, this time on the grounds that the MLA hostel in bad condidion and is due for renovation. If accommodation was the only problem, it could have been solved by lodging them somewhere else. Monsoon session could have continued in Mumbai. The reason, I feel, might set a bad precedence.—Dhanashree Patade, DahisarThere was no opposition to the monsoon session being held in Nagpur. However, we had reservations. The session shouldn’t be a mere formality, it should address the issues faced by the people of Vidarbha and assure them of respite. Also if the monsoon session is taking place in Nagpur, the winter session will be held here in Mumbai.—Neelam Gorhe, MLC, Shiv SenaNo proper accommodation for the MLAs is the reason why the session is bein held in Nagpur. The hostels are in bade shape and if any mishap happens, it will send out a wrong message. Also this will be the fourth time in history of Maharashtra when the monsoon session will be held in Nagpur. The only aim is to have proper facilities for the MLAs. We are also looking at options in Mumbai so that we don’t have to shift the sessions to Nagpur frequently.—Prakash Mehta, Minister, Maharashtra State. The idea behind the Nagpur session was to give a level playing field to Vidarbha, as envisaged by the Nagpur Pact. Over the years, the session has lost its sheen and is rooted in tokenism. The government apparently wants to streamline supplementary grants. This may happen only if the house functions and the bureaucracy works sensitively.—Dr Deepak Pawar, Assistant Professor, University of Mumbai. It is always the state that decides where to conduct winter and monsoon sessions. As per the Nagpur pact, a session should be conducted in Nagpur which will take up issues faced by the people of Vidarbha. If there is a talk of holding both the sessions in Nagpur, it is a policy decision and government will only take a call.—Dr Ramaswamy N, Commissioner of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation.A session can be held anywhere, without lowering the stature of the the capital city. The session should focus on issues pertaining to the state. I don’t mind if the session is held in Nagpur, but then equal importance has to be given to Mumbai. People from other parts of the state, especially Mumbai, shouldn’t feel that more importance is being given to one city. The problem being cited for the monsoon session in Nagpur is genuine. However, the underlying question is why did the government not work on it all this time?—Pranjali Bhaye, WorliHow does it matter? Importance of where it is held is of no use to us. Citizens will suffer anyhow. Sessions were conducted in Mumbai too. Did it make any difference? Floods will hit Mumbai this monsoon like every year. Height of the Andheri Kurla Road is increased by four feet. Increasing the height of the road might prevent flooding, but other internal roads may get flooded. How does it make any difference?—Ravi Nair, MarolEXPERT SPEAKI do not think there should be any problem for holding assembly session in Nagpur in today’s time. There are so many advanced tools of communication and technology enables us to share files and records easily. Hence, I do not feel that administration will face any problem if monsoon and winter both assembly session is held away from Mumbai in Nagpur.—DM Sukthankar, Former chief secretary of MaharashtraI think it’s an unnecessary expenditure causing loss to the state exchequer. What is the need to shift the capital for a session when all is digital today? Maybe 50 years ago it was a different situation of “governance at your doorstep”. So, I feel it’s totally a waste of the states finances. I also think that the convention of winter session at Nagpur must also be scrapped. Crores of money saved can saved in the process which can be used to help our farmers, orphans and the needy citizens instead.—Adv Sujay kantawala, lawyer.

Maharashtra government lists seven most dangerous bldgs in South Mumbai

A total of seven buildings (which includes six buildings from last year’s list) has been declared as the most dangerous cessed buildings by MHADA. Situated in South Mumbai, the buildings housed a total 403 residents, of which 117 are yet to vacate. On Saturday evening the state’s Housing Minister Prakash Mehta announced the list of the buildings, and Esplanade Mansion, next to the Mumbai Sessions Court at Kalaghoda continues to tops the list. When asked, why this building keeps reappearing in list, Meheta said, “The tenants of this building had approached the court and there’s a stay on eviction.” The building has a lot of advocate offices in it. Last year nearly 800 buildings have been repaired by the Mumbai Repair and Reconstruction Board of MHADA. Last year’s list featured nine buildings of which three were repaired, while remaining six continue to be in the list. However, most of the times, the buildings that collapse during monsoons are not always a part of the list. “As per state government directions, survey of the dilapidated buildings should not be restricted to pre-monsoon period only. It should be carried out through out the year so that we can recognise more dilapidated buildings,” read the statement issued by the MRRB.According to officials, they are trying to vacate the buildings in coming days. The authority has even issued emergency helpline numbers. Uttar Pradesh: Sons and daughter kept dead mother ‘alive’ for 5 months to enjoy pension

In a shocking incident, five sons and an unmarried daughter of a 70-year-old lady kept her body in the house for the last five months to continue splurging on her Rs 40,000 pension in Varanasi district of Uttar Pradesh. The incident came to light when residents of Awas Vikas Colony in Durgakund under Bhelupur Police Station called up the police on Wednesday afternoon about unbearable foul stench emanating from the house of Amravati Devi.Amravati’s husband had retired as Superintendent from Custom department and died a few years ago. The widow was living with her five sons Ravi Prakash, Jyoti Prakash, Girish Prakash, Yogeshwar Prakash, Dev Prakash and an unmarried daughter. She was getting Rs 40,000 as pension after her husband’s death. The amount was being largely spent to take care of families of her sons who are mostly employed, except for one who was a practicing lawyer but not earning much. When police forced its entry into the house, they were shocked to find the body of the elderly lady with foul stench spread all over the house and locality. Residents claimed that she was admitted in the BHU Hopsital in 2017 and had died on January 13 but her sons kept on lying that she was alive and bed-ridden.Few days after her death, four of her sons left the house along with their families while Ravi Prakash and her sister Vijay Lakshmi stayed back with her body. “Whenever we would inquire about his mother, he would politely reply that she has become weak and unable to walk, while she was already dead,” pointed Chedi Lal, a neighbour.Shockingly, the police also recovered some chemicals from the house which was applied on deceased’s body to embalm it. But the body was found beyond recognition as they used wrong chemicals for embalming which are not easily available in the market. Despite recovery of the body, Ravi Prakash and his sister kept on insisting that their mother was alive and resisted move to sent the body for the post mortem. However, later Ravi Praksh admitted before the SP City Dinesh Kumar that their mother had died about five months ago but they did not disclose her death to continue taking her monthly pension by using her thumb impression as they had no other source of survival. “The pension would have stopped had we announced her death and cremated the body. Since we are unemployed and have no source of income to run our families, we decided to keep her alive to continue getting the pension for our survival,” admitted Ravi Prakash.“A case has been registered and the body has been sent for the post mortem examination to ascertain cause and timing of death. We have also launched a search to detain her four sons for questioning. The Custom department has been informed about her death,” said the SP City. “We are shocked and baffled as to how could sons be so greedy to keep her mother’s body at home for five months to enjoy her pension benefits,” said Ramesh Chandra, a resident of the locality.

Devendra Fadnavis curtails power of housing minister over SRAs

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has curtailed the powers of housing minister Prakash Mehta recently while overruling the objections of the landlords in the slum rehabilitation projects.According to the sources in the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), earlier while undertaking the SRA projects after obtaining the majority consent of tenants, if the landlords blocked a project by denying consent, the housing was entrusted with power to overrule it or acquire the land without the landlord’s permission. However, a source on condition of anonymity has confirmed to DNA that this power will be only with the CEO of the Slum Rehabilitation Authority ( SRA) who is an IAS officer. When DNA got in touch with Mehta, he claimed that he overruled the objections, adding that it was always the department who did the groundwork from preparing the file to administering the project. “It used to come to my table just for approval and subsequently issue the notifications. It was a mere formality,” claimed Mehta. He said that in the last four years he had overturned only 44 of such decisions. “Besides, I even did not conduct a hearing for these decisions. Therefore, it will be wrong to say that my power has been curtailed. Actually, it has decentralized to allow better and speedy decisions,” reasoned Mehta while justifying his decisions.Mehta said that as a minister, “We have to focus on the policy decisions and its proper implementation.”When asked Mehta whether this decision was taken to snub him in view of his controversial decision on MP Mill compound SRA project, “I am not bothered about it. I am sure it has been taken in a good faith,” added Mehta.Nawab Malik, NCP spokesperson said that in the MP Mills Compound, Mehta had blatantly violated the prescribed housing norms by giving windfall gain of Rs 500 crore to the developer. “As a minister, Mehta has lost his credibility. The Lokayukta is already probing his irregularities in this said SRA project. The truth will soon come out. After his powers being curtailed, Mehta should step down immediately,” Malik said.WHAT CHANGESEarlier while undertaking SRA projects after obtaining majority consent of tenants, if the landlords blocked a project, the housing ministry was entrusted with power to overrule it

No ban on day-dreaming: Prakash Javadekar on Rahul Gandhi’s prime ministerial aspirations

Union minister Prakash Javadekar today took a dig at Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s remark that he is ready to be the prime minister, saying there is no ban on “day-dreaming”.The Congress has lost 20 states and it is in power only in a couple of states now. “If on that basis, Gandhi is thinking of becoming the prime minister, then there is no ban on day-dreams in this country,” Javadekar told a regional television channel, when asked about the Congress chief’s remark.Gandhi had recently said he is ready to become the prime minister if his party emerges as the “biggest” party in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.Asked if Gandhi could pose a challenge to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the parliamentary elections next year, Javadekar said, “A smart tweet or big talk is not politics. It is much more than that.” The BJP had only two MPs in the Lok Sabha in 1984 and it won 282 seats in the 2014 general polls. The Congress was then 400, which reduced to 44, he pointed out.”There are lessons to be learnt by the Congress from our example,” he said.Asked about the recent political scenario in Karnataka, he said the southern state’s governor had invited the BJP by acting within the constitutional framework.”When we realised that we do not have the sufficient strength, our chief minister (B S Yeddyurappa) stepped down,” he added. On the Punjab National Bank scam involving diamond merchant Nirav Modi, the BJP leader said, “It happened during Congress period but we have arrested more than 13 people in connection with the case. We will seize their properties spread across the country.” On the BJP’s slogan of ‘Congress-free India’, the minister said it means a country free of “crony-politics, lobbying and passing on benefits only to selected people.” “The bad culture in politics, introduced by the Congress, is what we have been opposing,” Javadekar said.Asked about Rahul Gandhi using a similar slogan of “Modi-mukt Bharat”, he claimed that it does not have any appeal among people. “Being so anti-Modi is negative politics which will never be successful in the country.” Despite being a nationwide party, if the Congress was going to say it will only oppose (Prime Minister) Narendra Modi, then it is negative politics, he said.Javadekar exuded confidence that the BJP will not only win the 2019 general elections, but its performance will also be better than earlier in West Bengal, Odisha, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. “We will also retain our current base in the country.” To a query on how the Centre was going to check the black money and if any opposition leader from Maharashtra would face the heat, he said the Benami Property Transaction Act is going to be implemented from June onwards.”You will see many leaders of the Congress, the NCP and many more will face its heat. The properties and bungalows purchased in the name of some servants or non-existing person, all are going to be confiscated,” he said.Highlighting the government’s achievements and lauding its Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Javadekar said seven crore houses in the country got toilets.”I have seen that women in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar have given their toilets the name of ‘izzat ghar’ as earlier it was embarrassing for them to go out in public,” he said. There are some 400 schemes in the country having an outlay of Rs 3.25 lakh crore, which directly gets deposited into the bank accounts, he said.”The then prime minister, Rajiv Gandhi, had once said that if he sends Rs 100 to the people, only Rs 15 would reach actually. It was the Congress in power, from the Centre to village, and leaders were siphoning off money. We have stopped it,” Javadekar said.

Agra: Yogi govt’s move to replace Dr Ambedkar statue with Deendayal Updhyaya’s kicks up row

The Yogi Adityanath government has kicked up a row by issuing an order to replace a statue of Babasaheb Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar, installed at Agra Municipal Corporation (AMC), with that of saffron icon Pandit Deendayal Updhyaya.Dalit employees and corporators of AMC are up in arms against the state government’s order. “We will not allow the authorities to replace Dr Ambdekar’s statue at any cost. It is an attempt to hurt and provoke dalit community across state,” said DVSingh, a dait corporator. BSP too has jumped into the protest on the row over statue replacement. “It will create social unrest and the authorities must stop or be ready to face the consequences,” warned Bhartendu Arun, BSP Agra District President. The state cultural department had issued an order on April 25 responding to a letter by five-time BJP MLA JP Garg requesting the state government to replace one of Dr Ambedkar’s statue with Pt Deendayal Updhayaya. In its order, the Cultural department Deputy Director A.K. Agarwal had also directed the Agra District Magistrate and SSP to ensure that no law and order problem arises after replacement and installation of statues. Reacting to strong objections raised by dalit corportaors and employees, the BJP MLA clarified that only one of the statue of Dr Ambedkar will be replaced that too with of Pt Deendayal Updhyaya, who worked for the upliftment of the dalit community. “It was not attempt to hurt anyone’s sentiments but to restore the pride of the dalit community by installing statues of a great social worker who always fought for the rights and dignity of dalits across country,” he told media.Sensing trouble, the Agra Municipal Commissioner Arun Prakash, however, made it clear that the statue will be replaced only after the mayor and the coorporators pass a resolution in this regard at the Corporation House.

From Mamata Banerjee to Chandrababu Naidu: How opposition hailed BJP’s Karnataka defeat

The three-day-old BJP government in Karnataka collapsed today as Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa quit minutes before he was to face a floor test to prove his contested majority in the hung assembly after which the JD(S)-Congress combine led by the regional party’s chief H D Kumaraswamy was invited to take the reins of power.Capping five days of riveting political and court-room drama, Yeddyurappa announced his decision to quit on the floor of the Assembly after a brief emotional speech rather than face a vote of confidence he was widely expected to lose.Speaking to reporters after the meeting, HD Kumaraswamy, who became the chief minister for the first time in 2006 at the head of a JD(S)-BJP coalition, said the Governor has given him 15 days to prove the majority, “but we will do it much before”.He also thanked the Supreme Court for the “right directions”.Also readDK Shivakumar – the Karnataka Congressman whose resort politics denied Amit Shah twiceA number of leaders of the opposition hailed the BJP’s ‘loss’ in Karnataka and irrepective of political ideologies, came together to hail the decision.West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee tweeted, “Democracy wins. Entire nation is happy with the current turn of events. As a Chief Minister and a firm believer of democracy, I am expressing my happiness.”Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, too, lashed out at the BJP. Taking to Twitter, Kejriwal said, “BJP’s attempts to subvert democracy have miserably failed in Karnataka. BJP’s lust for power through foul means stands completely exposed. Will BJP learn any lesson now ? India’s judiciary has risen to the occasion and has safeguarded our democracy.”Earlier, the BJP put up a brave face after the resignation with union minister Prakash Javadekar saying the party knows how to “respect democracy” while the Congress, the AAP and other opposition parties said the saffron party’s attempt to “subvert democracy” failed miserably. Javadekar also said the Congress was treating an electoral defeat as victory.Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar claimed that the new government would not last long as it was an “unholy nexus.” The Congress, which finished second with 78 seats, moved swiftly and stitched an alliance with the 37-member JD(S), and even backed its leader H D Kumaraswamy for chief ministership, plunging the state into a welter of confusion, with accusations of bribery and poaching flying thick and fast. The newly formed alliance has claimed support of 117 MLAs in the 224-member House with an effective strength of 221.

2G, CWG, Jijaji: Javadekar targets Congress ‘scams’ after Karnataka disappointment

BJP leader Prakash Javadekar hit out at the Congress after the saffron party lost the claim to form the government in Karnataka after Saturday’s floor test, stating that the party should file for bankruptcy.Addressing the media, Javadekar hailed outgoing CM BS Yeddyurappa, who assumed oath on Thursday, saying that he had shown respect to democracy. “His speech has touched the hearts of people,” saidJavadekar. He lashed out at Congress party’s claim that the party had defeated the BJP, calling the statement ‘laughable’. “We defeated Congress and emerged as the single largest party in Karnataka. It’s the BJP that has defeated their party. We went from 40 seats to 104. They went down from 122 seats to 78. It’s the Congress that was defeated, not the BJP,” Javadekar added. Also readKarnataka Drama: Emotional Yeddyurappa has his Vajpayee moment, resigns as CM Calling the Congress-JD(S) allaince as ‘opportunistic’, Javadekar continued his tirade against Gandhi saying that he had insulted former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda. “He also called JD(S) the B team of the BJP. Now it is proof that the JD(S) is the B team of the Congress,” he said. Also alleging that the Congress, led by Rahul Gandhi, wasn’t letting parliament function, Javedekar added that the Congress had no faith in the election commission. “They don’t trust Parliament and have made a joke out of parliament. Rahul Gandhi’s allegation that PM Modi is a corrupt person is laughable as it is Congress who has always been involved in corruption. 2G, CWG, Jijaji and coal scam – are just some of the corruption charges against the party,” he adds. Also readDemocracy wins: Mamata Banerjee celebrates Yeddyurappa’s resignation as Karnataka CMCongress has lost so many states, including Karnataka. “But now they’re celebrating their defeat as victory,” he added. An alliance should be based on ideology. Congress MLAs arrive in Bengaluru ahead of crucial Karnataka Assembly floor test

Newly-elected Congress MLAs from Karnataka, who had been camping in Hyderabad in two hotels to avoid any poaching bids by the BJP, arrived in Bengaluru on Saturday for the crucial floor test in the state assembly.A bus carrying the MLAs, escorted by several cars, arrived in the morning, ANI reported. Earlier, a PTI report said that MLAs of both the JD(S) and the Congress left for Bengaluru on Friday night.JD(S) MLC Basavaraj had claimed on Friday that as many as 36 legislators belonging to his party and 77 of the Congress were camping in the Hyderabad hotels.Though the legislators were prepared to stay in the city hotels for a few days, they all left in the night by road as the Supreme Court ordered that a floor test be held in the Karnataka Assembly at 4 PM on Saturday to confirm whether newly-appointed BJP Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa enjoys a majority in the state.”All the legislators left for Bengaluru by road at 10 pm,” Vamshi Chand Reddy, Congress MLA in Telangana, said. The legislators reached Hyderabad in four buses from Karnataka on Friday morning.Congress’ Karnataka unit chief K Parameshwara said his party was confident of keeping their MLAs together and alleged that the BJP was trying to woo their lawmakers with incentives.”All our MLAs are with us… tomorrow they will be present in the Assembly (in Bengaluru),” he said.Former Chief Minister of Karnataka and JD(S) leader Kumaraswamy earlier addressed the legislators in Taj Krishna Hotel. Later Congress legislature Party meeting elected Siddharamaiah as their leader, a senior Congress leader of Telangana said.Political observers say Hyderabad was chosen for keeping the MLAs together owing to the rapport that Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has with the JD(S) chief and former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda.Rao had recently met Gowda at the latter’s residence before the Karnataka polls. The Telangana chief minister had appealed to Telugu people living in the neighbouring state to vote for the JD(S). Both the Congress and the JD(S) have alleged that their MLAs have been offered money and ministerial berths to vote for Yeddyurappa. The Congress even released a purported audio conversation between mining baron Janardhana Reddy and a Congress MLA to back its claim. In the audio, a man suspected to be Reddy is heard allegedly offering Chitradurga Rural Congress legislator Basanagouda Daddal a ministerial berth with “100 times growth.”Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar, however, said the audio was “utter falsehood.””We condemn the actions of the Congress’ dirty tricks department,” he said.(With PTI inputs)

CS assault: Kejriwal to join probe tomorrow; demands video recording of proceedings

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has agreed to join the investigation in the case of alleged assault of Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash even as he demanded video recording of the proceedings, the police said today. In a letter addressed to Station House Officer of Civil Lines Police Station, the chief minister said he would be available at his camp office at 5 pm tomorrow.”Due to some prior commitments, I won’t be able to join the investigation at 11 am. I would request you to kindly defer the time on the same day at 5 pm at my camp office,” read the letter. The city police had yesterday sent him a notice to join the investigation in the case at 11 am tomorrow. Kejriwal also demanded that he be allowed to video record the proceedings.”I wish to video record the entire proceedings during the investigation. If you have any objection, I would request you to kindly make arrangements at your end to video record the same and in such case, a copy of the recording be provided after the conclusion of my questioning (sic),” he said in the letter.A senior officer privy to the probe said a five to six member police team led by Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Harendra Singh will visit the CM office tomorrow.”The proceedings will be video recorded, but the chief minister won’t be allowed to video record the investigation. Also, it will be the police’s decision to share the recording with him. The video proceedings of the questioning of AAP MLAs and others in the case were also recorded earlier,” he said.Elaborating further, the officer said the AAP supremo will be questioned on a range of points like the reason for holding late night meetings, whether such meetings have earlier been held with the Delhi government officials etc.The police might also summon his deputy Manish Sisodia in the case as he was present when the alleged incident took place.Prakash was allegedly assaulted during a meeting at Kejriwal’s official residence on February 19.The police have already questioned 11 AAP MLAs present at the chief minister’s residence for the meeting. Two of the party MLAs– Amantullah Khan and Prakash Jarwal–were arrested in the case.Kejriwal, his former advisor V K Jain and Deputy Chief Minister Sisodia were also present in the meeting. Jain was also questioned in the case.On February 23, a police team had examined the CCTV system installed at the chief minister’s residence in the Civil Lines area and seized the hard disk. The forensic report on the hard disk is still awaited.Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, Vijender Gupta said the “conspiracy” of assault on Prakash was “hatched” at Kejriwal’s residence, so it was no surprise that he would be questioned by the police.”The chief minister should cooperate in the investigation, instead of indulging in the politics over it,” he said. The alleged assault on the chief secretary had triggered a bitter tussle between the Delhi government and its bureaucrats.

Toll in Andhra Pradesh boat mishap put at 12; Search on for 10 missing

At least 12 people died in the boat capsize in Godavari River in Andhra Pradesh with searches still on for ten other missing passengers, feared drowned, officials said today. The state government announced an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh each to the kin of the victims of the mishap that occurred yesterday near Manturu village in East Godavari district with bad weather considered a probable cause. The rescue teams that toiled for hours, to first trace the sunken boat and later to pull it ashore, so far extricated 12 bodies, including that of two children, officials said.Efforts were still on to trace the other ten, they said.Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, who visited the accident spot, said human error was the main reason for it and assured that those guilty would be brought to book.”There was gale yesterday and the boat was also laden with cement bags and two-wheelers. That caused the mishap. We will not spare anyone responsible for the incident,” he said.Though a warning about the inclement weather was issued at least half an hour in advance, there was no communication system in the boat to receive it, Naidu said.He also announced a government job would be provided to an eligible person each from the families of the victims and a house would also be built for them. The boat, with about 35-40 passengers, was on its way to Rajamahendravaram from Devipatnam when the tragedy struck. At least 13 persons swam to safety after the boat capsized because of strong winds, West Godavari Superintendent of Police Ravi Prakash said. The boat which got stuck in the sand of the riverbed at a depth of at least 40 feet was pulled ashore today.Besides the Navy, personnel from the National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force, Fire Services, revenue and police departments are involved in the search and rescue operations. The passengers of the boat belonged to Kondamodalu, Kachluru and Talluru villages.Earlier, the boat was located after an aerial survey by Naval helicopters, carrying expert drivers, from the Eastern Naval Command in Visakhapatnam. However, with all the doors and windows of boats closed, extricating the bodies trapped inside proved to be cumbersome exercise for the divers. They could initially pull out only two bodies after breaking open the glass windows.East Godavari district Collector Kartikeya Misra, Superintendent of Police Vishal Gunni and West Godavari SP Ravi Prakash supervised the rescue operations.

Karnataka Elections 2018: Confusion over BJP forming govt as state BJP deletes tweet; Javadekar shows victory sign

In ten minutes of confusion, reports that the BS Yeddyurappa-led BJP would be forming the next Karnataka government sent shockwaves as the saffron party has only bagged 104 seats in the recently concluded Assembly elections. The Karnataka unit of the BJP even confirmed the news on Twitter, but deleted the tweet minutes after putting it up.Earlier reports that Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala had invited the BJP leader BS Yeddyurappa to form the government and prove his majority ahead of the JD(S)-Congress combine. Yeddyurappa will take oath on Thursday at 9.30 am did the rounds. However, there was still no official confirmation from either the Governor’s office or from Yeddyurappa’s office. Union ministers Prakash Javadekar and JP Nadda reached Yeddyurappa’s residence. Javadekar showed the victory sign but declined to reveal whether Yeddyurappa has been invited to take a oath. ”Let me meet Yeddyurappa and let you know later,” he said. Also readFor divine interference: Yeddy, Devegowda and Siddaramaiah’s sons reach out to same tantrik priestBJP is the single largest party in the Karnataka Assembly with 104 MLAs while the JDS-Congress post poll alliance has 117 MLAs in a House that requires 113 seats for majority. Delhi Chief Secy assault case: Police to question Arvind Kejriwal, AAP fumes

The Delhi Police has sent a notice to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal asking him to appear before it in connection with the alleged assault on chief secretary Anshu Prakash in February, police said today.Reacting sharply to the development, Aam Adami Party has alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is “misusing” Delhi police to “bother” Kejriwal. A senior police officer said that the notice was sent to Kejriwal today to join the investigations on May 18 at 11 am.The notice said, “You (Kejriwal) are required to attend investigation and be available at your residence/office on May 18 at 11 AM. In the event, such timing is not convenient to you due to official exigencies, kindly intimate an alternate time.” However, Kejriwal has not responded to the notice, the official said. There is also a possibility that the police may also ask Kejriwal’s deputy Manish Sisodia to join the investigation after the chief minister. Reacting sharply to the Delhi police notice, AAP’s Delhi unit chief spokesperson Saurabh Bharadwaj said, “It is for the first time in India that a chief minister is being examined in a fake case. Modi ji is misusing the police to bother the chief minister but people stand by Kejriwal.” He also alleged that the prime minister is “pressurising” chief secretary Prakash to pursue a false case against the AAP supremo. Last month, Kejriwal’s private secretary Bibhav Kumar and a party volunteer Vivek Kumar were also questioned in connection with the case. Police have already questioned the 11 AAP MLAs who were present at the chief minister’s residence for the meeting on February 19 in which Prakash was allegedly attacked.Kejriwal, his former advisor VK Jain and Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia were also present there. On February 23, a police team had examined the CCTV system installed at the chief minister’s residence in the Civil Lines area and seized the hard disk. The forensic report on the hard disk is still awaited. The alleged assault on the chief secretary had triggered a bitter tussle between the Delhi government and its bureaucracy.

Karnataka verdict: People rejected Cong’s divisive agenda, says BJP

With the BJP set for an impressive win in the Karnataka assembly poll, its leaders described the victory as an endorsement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s development agenda and claimed that people have rejected divisive, toxic and negative agenda of the Congress.According to the Election Commission figures, the BJP is heading in over 112 seats and appears set for getting a majority.Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad also took a swipe at Congress president Rahul Gandhi, saying somebody was dreaming of becoming prime minister, a reference to Gandhi’s statement during the Karnataka poll campaign that he was ready for the job if his party emerged victorious in the next Lok Sabha elections. Also readKarnataka elections: Mamata Banerjee says results would have been very different if Congress-JD(S) had alliedHis cabinet colleague Nirmala Sitharaman said it is an historic day for the party and the win was an endorsement of Modi’s development agenda.People have rejected divisive, toxic and negative politics of the Congress, she said. Also readKarnataka Election Results 2018: People chose BJP for good governance, says Prakash JavadekarPeople, however, went for Modi’s development agenda, she added. Karnataka Election Results 2018: People chose BJP for good governance, says Prakash Javadekar

As BJP inches towards halfway mark in the Karnataka Assembly Election results, the party’s in-charge of Karnataka Prakash Javadekar on Tuesday said that the people of the state have chosen the saffron party as they want good governance.”People of Karnataka want good governance, that is why they have chosen BJP. This is a big victory for the party. Congress is losing state after state & we are winning state after state,” Javadekar was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.Meanwhile, the party workers have already started celebrating outside party offices across the country. Raising slogans and praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP workers celebrated outside the party offices in Bengaluru and Delhi. Senior BJP Subramanian Swamy took to Twitter and expressed his happiness over the verdict. He said that it seems his prediction was coming true and that he would hope to see his ‘good friend’ BS Yeddyurappa as Karnataka Chief Minister on May 18. “It looks like my early prediction for Karnataka polls of BJP majority is turning out be true,” Swamy said. “I hope to see my good friend Yeddiruppa as CM on 18th,” he added in another tweet.Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh called it a ‘historic win’ for BJP. says this “is a historic win for BJP.” “This I want to thank all the people of Karnataka for voting for us. Ab desh mein Congress khojo abhiyan chalega, kahaan rahegi pata nahi.” Counting of votes began at 8 am for 221 out of 224 assembly constituencies in 58,546 polling stations in the state. The elections in two constituencies, Jayanagar and Rajarajeshwari Nagar, both in Bengaluru have been postponed earlier.A total of 2,654 candidates, including 216 women candidates were in the fray for the Assembly Elections this year. The elections in Karnataka are being viewed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as its gateway into the South.Since the 2014 general elections, the Congress party has been defeated by the BJP in over a dozen states, drastically shrinking its political footprint.Today’s vote count will decide the political fate of key players like Siddaramaiah, B.S Yeddyurappa, Malikarjun Kharge, and H.D Deve Gowda and HD Kumaraswamy. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) fielded 223 candidates, while the Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular) fielded 222 and 201 candidates respectively.Out of the 224 seats, 36 of them are reserved for Scheduled Castes (SCs), while 15 of them are for Scheduled Tribes (STs).

NSA to be slapped on TN man who talked about plot to kill PM Modi

Police probing a claim by a man here of an alleged plot to kill Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said the National Security Act (NSA) would be slapped on him after investigations suggested there was indeed such a plan to create communal tension.City Police Commissioner K Periaiah signed the order to detain Mohammed Rafiq, arrested last month over the claim, under the NSA and the orders would be served on him tomorrow, police said. The decision to invoke the NSA was taken after a detailed inquiry and searches in the house of Rafiq, a convict in the 1998 bomb blast case who had completed his jail term.During the investigations, it had been found that there was a plot to create communal tension by targeting Modi, police said.53-year old Rafiq was arrested on April 23 and remanded to judicial custody after a recorded telephonic conversation went viral on social media in which he is purportedly heard saying he is planning to kill Modi.Police had then registered a case under section 506 (i) of IPC (criminal intimidation) after initial inquiry suggested that his plot claim might be only to scare away the transport contractor Prakash with whom he was speaking.Rafiq’s conversation with the contractor mainly related to finances about vehicles. But suddenly he was heard saying “we have decided to eliminate (Prime Minister) Modi, as we were the ones who had planted bombs when (former deputy prime minster L K) Advani visited the city in 1998,” police had said quoting the eight-minute recorded conversation. The city was rocked by a series of bomb blasts in February 1998 in which 58 people were killed and over 200 people injured. Rafiq, lodged in the Central prison here after his arrest last month, is presently admitted to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for some heart problem.

Maharashtra government to take over home projects

To meet the target of constructing 15 lakh houses by end of its term, the Fadnavis government has decided to take over uncompleted residential projects from the developers. The government will then complete the remaining work and allot the houses to eligible buyers via lottery scheme.According to the Maharashtra Housing department, it had decided to approach the land holders and developers, who for various reasons, were unable to complete residential projects in the state. “We will take over these projects and develop them by giving the floor space index (FSI) of 4. In the developed projects, the government will retain the 2/3 developed houses and remaining 1/3 will be given to the developers concerned. We will not pay anything for the land cost to the developers. We are giving them the developed area that they can sell in open market,” Prakash Mehta told DNA.Mehta said the government has a budget of Rs 5,000 crore for the purpose. “We are not short of funds. So builders will be doing all a favour by approaching us,” he added.”This is a welcome step. Presently, many developers are bleeding due to paucity of fund and staggering sale,” said Manohar Shroff, vice-president of Maharashtra Chamber of Housing Industry (MCHI), Navi Mumbai. “The government decision will help the buyers get apartments on time. The ratio of developer-government share can be negotiated,” Shroff added. He further said that under the Prime Minister’s Awas Yojana, the government has also decided to give Rs 2.50 lakh subsidy to the first-time buyers. “These first-time buyers can purchase the flat and avail the benefit under this scheme. We want to give houses to as many people who don’t own a home,” Mehta said.Sources said that CM Fadnavis has called a review meeting of the PM’s Awas Yojana on Friday. “The CM will come out with a road map to meet the target,” said the source requesting anonymity.KNOW THE PLANThe govt will take over the projects and develop them by giving the floor space index (FSI) of 4. Govt will retain the 2/3 developed houses.Remaining 1/3 will be given to the developers.

Karnataka Election 2018: Fake voter ID row – what we know so far

A massive controversy has rocked Karnataka after nearly 10,000 “fake” voter ID cards were seized from a flat in Rajrajeshwari Assembly seat, prompting the BJP to demand countermanding of the election claiming Congress was behind the racket, a charge dismissed by the latter as a “lie”.With just three days left before Karnataka goes to poll, the BJP and Congress, the two main contenders for power, went after each other’s jugular, each claiming the flat belonged to a woman associated with the rival party.Addressing a press conference, Union minister Prakash Javadekar claimed Congress candidate and sitting MLA Munirathna Naidu was behind the alleged racket, which was exposed by BJP worker Rakesh.Congress spokesman Rajdeep Singh Surjawala hit right back, alleging that the flat owner Manjula Nanjamari and Rakesh had BJP connections and both contested Bengaluru Municipal Corporation elections on the tickets of the saffron party. Karnataka’s Chief Electoral Officer Sanjiv Kumar had called a press conference last midnight where he said besides the cards, form 6A (application for inclusion of name in electoral roll by an overseas elector) with counterfoils were found. He said that the colour in the counterfoil appeared unusual, and that an inquiry was on. Also readKarnataka Assembly Elections 2018: Congress petitions EC over recovery of voter ID cards in Raja Rajeshwari NagarJavadekar said thousands of fake cards with hologram, lamination machines, and computers were seized by police after BJP workers informed it about the racket, and demanded a thorough forensic inquiry.”This is the philosophy of the Congress….if voters do not vote for you, create fake voters,” he said, claiming a “fake voter ID printing factory” was being run in Manjula’s flat. Manjula, he said, was once associated with the BJP but was now with the Congress, and demanded her immediate arrest. Also readKarnataka polls: Money seized from BJP, Congress leaders residencesHe alleged she had campaigned for the sitting Congress MLA from the seat and its candidate for the current Assembly election Munirathna Naidu in the last polls. The Congress hit back with a vengeance, claiming BJP was making such allegations because it was aware of its imminent defeat.”They are making such allegations because of their imminent defeat, and after their workers and leaders were caught red-handed influencing voters in collating and collecting fake ID cards in order to influence the results of the elections,” Surjewala told reporters. He said the ID cards and equipment were not recovered from the flat by the police but BJP workers. The flat, he said, belonged to a BJP worker. Also readFake voter-Id row: BJP demands countermanding of polls in Raja Rajeshwari Nagar”Prakash Javadekar had the audacity to lie, mislead the people of Karnataka by saying Manjula does not belong to the BJP. She is a former BJP corporator and Rakesh also contested corporation election on BJP ticket in 2015,” he said.”Javadekar runs a factory of lies. Rakesh was a tenant of flat No. 115 and its is mentioned in the list of BJP candidates who contested the corporation elections. Manjula is a former BJP corporator from Jalahalli,” he said, citing newspaper reports.”Will Javadekar, Amit Shah (BJP chief) still have the audacity to lie and mislead the people of Karnataka. You were doing a midnight drama for diverting people’s attention…both Manjula and Rakesh belong to BJP,” he said, adding the saffron party was “deep in the muck” it was trying to hurl at others. While some TV news channels claimed Rakesh was Manjula’s son, and others said she was his adoptive mother, the women at the centre of the controversy insisted they were relatives but had “no contact”.She told a TV channel in Kannada, which was translated into English, that since she owned the land on which the apartment building stood, she had entered into a joint venture with a builder.Manjula said she had rented or leased out the flats.”If Rakesh was aware that some wrongdoing was happening there, he should have informed me.”When asked whether Rakesh was her son or adopted son, she said he was a nephew and that they had “no contact due to strain in family ties”.A press release issued by the Karnataka chief electoral officer that was published in some newspapers said the flat was “ownd by a person named Manjula Nanjamari and was rented to a person named Rakesh”.Javedakar, accusing the Congress of “telling lies loudly”, said Manjula and Rakesh were “at loggerheads” and that he did not stay in her flat.”The Congress ran an a fake I-Card issuance office there….this is what they are best at,” he said.Deputy leader of the Congress in the Rajya Sabha Anand Sharma said the entire episode was “stage-managed”.He claimed Manjula was associated with the BJP and her “son” Rakesh had contested the municipal corporation election on a BJP ticket.”The Election Commission must take action, and a police case be registered,” he told reporters in New Delhi, adding the BJP was up to such tactics as defeat was staring it in the face. Fake voter-Id row: BJP demands countermanding of polls in Raja Rajeshwari Nagar

The BJP today demanded countermanding of polls in Raja Rajeshwari Nagar Assembly seat in Karnataka after thousands of “fake” voter identity cards were recovered from a flat there.Union minister Prakash Javadekar alleged Congress candidate and sitting MLA Munirathna Naidu was behind the alleged racket, which was exposed by BJP worker Rakesh.Javadekar said thousands of fake cards with hologram, lamination machines, and computers were seized by police yesterday.”This is the philosophy of the Congress….if voters do not vote for you, create fake voters,” he told a press conference.Javadekar demanded a thorough probe by cyber security agencies into the incident.Calling the incident a “subversion of democracy”, he alleged the Congress was making attempts to show voters from outside the state as its natives. He demanded immediate arrest of Manjula, the owner of the flat, for her alleged involvement in the racket.Senior Congress leader Anand Sharma, however, dubbed the incident as “stage-managed”.He claimed Manjula was associated with the BJP and her son Rakesh had contested the municipal corporation election on a BJP ticket.”The Election Commission must take action, and a police case be registered,” he said, adding the BJP was up to such tactics as defeat was staring it in the face.

Karnataka polls: Money seized from BJP, Congress leaders residences

The flying squads of the Election Commission on Wednesday seized the amount of Rs. 8 lakh and Rs. 30, 000 in cash from two locations in Koppal’s Gangawati.Rs 8 lakh were seized from the residence of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) District President Virupaksha and Rs 30,000 from the house of Congress leader Shamid Maniyar.Last night, 9,746 voter ID cards were found from a flat in SLV Park View Apartment in Bengaluru’s Jalahalli locality, and the Election Commission’s revelation of the same at midnight was followed by political sparring, as both BJP and Congress alleged the other’s links with the concerned flat.Earlier today, the Election Commission officials also seized printers from the same flat. While the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Union Minister Prakash Javadekar accused the Congress of attempting to rig the elections, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala alleged that Nanjamuri rented her own flat to his son Rakesh, who contested corporation election on a BJP ticket in 2015.However, Sridhar Nanjamari on Wednesday rebuffed such allegations and told ANI he was the only son of Manjula Nanjamuri.”I am the only son of Manjula Nanjamari. Rakesh is my mother’s nephew’s son and he has got no connections with the flat in Park View apartment, as is what claimed in media,” Sridhar said and added that the flat has been rented to Rangaraju who pays rent for it every month. The BJP also demanded to cancel the polling in Raj Rajeshwari Nagar constituency where assembly elections are due on May 12 along with the rest of the state.

Election Commission, law panel likely to discuss simultaneous polls next week

The Election Commission and the Law Commission are likely to hold a brainstorming session next week on the road ahead for holding the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections together. The poll panel has invited law panel chief Justice BS Chauhan (retd) and other top officials to discuss the issue on May 16.”Yes, we will discuss the issue of simultaneous polls with the EC as they are the one who are mandated to hold elections,” said a law panel official. The planned meeting comes days after the Law Commission issued a working paper on simultaneous polls. The law panel said simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and state Assemblies could be held in two phases beginning 2019, provided at least two provisions of the Constitution were amended and ratified by a majority of the states. Some provisions of the Representation of the People Act would also have to be amended by a simple majority in Parliament, it said.According to the working paper, the second phase of simultaneous polls could take place in 2024.The document has proposed amending the Constitution (Articles 83 (2) and 172 (1) dealing with tenures of the Lok Sabha and the state Assemblies) and the Representation of the People Act to extend the terms of state legislative Assemblies to effect the move.It suggests that in case a government falls mid-term, the new government would be elected for the remaining period of that term, and not for a fresh five-year rule.”As an abundant caution and in order to avoid a challenge (in the courts) to amendments on the ground of not having obtained ratification by majority of the states, such ratification could be obtained for the proposed (constitutional) amendment,” the working paper says. The states which are recommended to be covered under phase I, with Assembly polls in 2021, include Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.States which will come under phase II include Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Delhi and Punjab. To hold elections in these states along with Lok Sabha polls, the terms of the Assemblies would have to be extended.Based on a suggestion made by the Election Commission, the working paper also says that a no-confidence motion against the government should be followed by a confidence motion. This would ensure that if the Opposition does not have the numbers to form an alternative government, the regime in office cannot be removed. The law panel has sought the views of constitutional experts, political parties and other stakeholders before finalising its report.Chief Election Commissioner Om Prakash Rawat had a word of caution on simultaneous polls when he recently said the legal framework required for holding the elections together would take time to be readied.”We cannot put the cart before the horse. Logistical issues are subservient to legal framework. Unless legal framework is in place, we don’t have to talk about anything else because legal framework will take a lot of time, making constitutional amendment to (changing) the law, all the process will take time,” he had said.He had said once the legal framework was ready, the EC would be out with its proposals.”The EC is a creation of the Constitution. We have to perform willy-nilly, deliver the election, whatever way prescribed in the law,” he had said. After Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s strong pitch for simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and state Assemblies, the law ministry had recently suggested consideration of the issue from the legal and logistical angles separately. The legal angle would involve constitutional amendments that would be required to be passed before the idea could be implemented on the ground. The other part would deal with logistics, infrastructure and finances.Following the recommendation of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Law in December 2016 to hold the two polls together, the law ministry had sought the views of the Election Commission. The commission, while supporting the idea, had made it clear that it was an expensive proposition and the Constitution would have to be amended to curtail or extend the terms of certain state Assemblies. The Commission has told the law ministry that it supports the proposal but the costs involved will be to the tune of over Rs 9,000 crore.Deposing before the parliamentary panel which gave its report on the ‘Feasibility of holding simultaneous elections to Lok Sabha and state Legislative Assemblies’, the Commission had voiced these concerns. The Commission has told the government as well as the committee that simultaneous conduct of elections would require a large-scale purchase of Electronic Voting Machines and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) machines.”For conducting simultaneous elections, the Commission expects that a total of Rs 9,284.15 crore will be needed for the procurement of EVMs and VVPATs,” the poll watchdog had said.

Mamata Banerjee slams Prakash Javadekar for NEET ‘irregularities’, demands re-exam at affected centres

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wrote to Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar today alleging “irregularities” in the conduct of the national medical entrance exam NEET in the state, and said the ministry could consider re-examination at some of the affected centres. Banerjee, citing reports, said there were many examination centres in the state where students were not provided question papers in Bengali on time, while at some others, they were handed photocopies of question papers, bearing the same candidate code of multiple students. Many candidates were given question papers in English and Hindi, she said.”I strongly urge you to take immediate action against persons responsible for such irregularities, and also take suitable measures so that the candidates are not adversely affected, due to non-availability of appropriate question papers.”And if need be, re-examination be scheduled to give a fair opportunity to all such candidates,” the chief minister wrote in the letter to Javadekar. The chief minister also gave reference of a central school located in the city, where “only 520 question papers were provided” when there were “600 students” appearing for the test in the institution. Banerjee suggested setting up of a “coordination mechanism” at the institutional level, with the state government and the CBSE, for making proper arrangements for examinations. The national eligibility-cum-entrance test (NEET) is conducted by the CBSE.”You are kindly aware that similar concerns were highlighted in the 2017 NEET UG examination conducted by CBSE and subsequently we were assured that such irregularities would not be repeated.”It appears that the examination conducting authorities have not been careful enough to ensure that the examination is meticulously held and the career of prospective candidates not jeopardised,” she said in the letter. The NEET for admission to medical and dental colleges across the country was conducted by the CBSE in 136 cities yesterday.

Mumbai: Police, BMC aware of such illegal works, says Resident

“It is not possible that a two-three storeyed illegal structure is built and commercial activities are carried out there and the local ward office is not aware. The letters for illegal constructions are given directly to the ward officer with the involvement of the junior officers. The ward officer is also aware about it,” said activist Anil Galgali. “If anybody complains, the ward office forwards it to the building proposal department and subsequently the replies are delayed,” he added.According to Prakash Jaiswal, a resident of Kurla West, “The BMC officer are in advance informed about any constructions. But, if anybody complains, the BMC demolishes the structures partially and after a few days they are re-constructed. For a two-storeyed commercial structures, around Rs 10 lakhs are spent in bribing both the BMC and the police. After that no action is taken,” he alleged. However, Assistant Municipal Commissioner, Ajitkumar Ambi said, “Some wards do not upload all complaints, while some wards upload even the smallest complaint. In Kurla, Sakinana, whichever complaint of illegal construction we receive, we demolish the structures. While for the structures on the collector or a private land, we forward the complaint to them.””Many a times the contractors add the floors which are less than 5 feet apart, which resemble like a part of the earlier structure. Many of the violators give the floors on rent, start a shop or start small business while some reside themselves.”

The number of journalists killed all over the world has seen a sharp rise in five years, with 530 such deaths — 18 of them in India — being reported from 2012 to 2016-end, a UNESCO report released today said. The report on World Trends in Freedom of Expression and Media Development Global Report 2017/2018′ said the number of killings was 67.72 per cent higher than the 316 recorded during the previous five-year period from 2007 to 2011-end.Syria, with 86, recorded the highest number of killings, followed by Iraq (46) , Mexico (37) , Somalia (36), Pakistan ( 30), Brazil (29), the Philippines and Yemen (21 each), Afghanistan (20), Honduras (19), India (18), Libya (17) and Guatemala (14).Ten journalists were killed in Bangladesh, 10 in Ukraine, eight in France and six each in Paraguay and Turkey. The year 2012 proved to be the deadliest year on record, with 124 journalists killed,” said the report, released on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, which is marked today.Although the number of journalists killed every year has seen a slight decline since 2012, the figures are still alarmingly high, the report said. With a number of Member States that have experienced periods of violent conflict, the Arab region remains the most dangerous for journalists, with 191 journalists killed between 2012 and 2016, including a significant peak of 50 deaths in 2012, it said.Despite registering a decline in the following years, the overall the region represents 36 per cent of all cases.Latin America and the Caribbean saw an increase in the number of journalists killed during the period, with 125 killings overall and a peak of 28 in 2016.This trend can be largely attributed to organised crime, drug trafficking and corruption, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization report said. After a steep decline prior to 2014, the killings sharply rose across Asia and the Pacific region, with a total of 107 killings, and a high of 27 in 2016.Comparatively, Africa, with 73 deaths, has seen a distinct decline in the killings of journalists over the last five years, down from 26 in 2012 to seven in 2016.Killings throughout Central and Eastern Europe have fluctuated over the past five years, presenting no clear trend but remaining relatively low, the report said. As many as 17 journalist were killed in the region.A generally low-risk region for lethal violence against journalists, Western Europe and North America (17 killings) have seen uncharacteristically high killings in the past three years largely due to violent extremism, it added.Of the total 530 killings in 2012-2016, as many as 166 were TV journalists, 142 print, 118 radio, 75 online and 29 cross-platform. Data leak: India to continue probe despite Cambridge Analytica closure

The Indian government will continue with its enquiry into the Cambridge Analytica data leak issue, irrespective of the British firm announcing closure of business, senior IT Ministry officials said today. The UK-based data analytics and political consulting firm has been under fire in various countries for allegedly harvesting data from almost 87 million Facebook users and leveraging them for political campaigns. The Indian government too has shot-off notices to both Facebook and Cambridge Analytica, confronting them with questions on data breach issue. The last date for the two companies to respond is May 10.Yesterday, however, Cambridge Analytica announced its closure in a statement on its website and claimed it had been “vilified” for activities that are legal and considered a standard component of online advertising.Indian officials familiar with the questioning and notices sent in the data leak matter said the ongoing probe will continue as the liability of the company existed prior to the closure announcement. They, however, declined to divulge further details in the matter, saying that both Facebook and Cambridge Analytica have time till May 10 to send written responses to official questioning. In fresh notice sent to Cambridge Analytica last month, the government asked what kind of data was collected in India and the research instruments used to capture such data. It also asked whether the company harvested any data through third party apps and whether or not mining of such data was done with user consent.Quizzing the British firm on the non-disclosure pacts signed by the company with its associates and clients for Indian assignments, the government also asked it to share the templates that were used in signing such agreements. The latest notice by the government had also flagged the “cryptic and evasive” reply given by Cambridge Analytica to the first notice. On the other hand, the notice to Facebook had taken note of the US social networking company’s candid admission of unauthorised use of its user data by Cambridge Analytica.Facebook was asked to list out the security architecture proposed to be created “so that data concerning Indians are not pilfered or manipulated again for extraneous purposes including to influence the elections”.While Facebook had previously admitted that nearly 5.62 lakh people in India were “potentially affected” by the data breach incident, Cambridge Analytica had claimed that it does not have any Facebook data on Indian citizens. The British firm yesterday said it is shutting down and cited a sharp drop in business behind its decision. In its statement, Cambridge Analytica said, “Over the past several months, Cambridge Analytica has been the subject of numerous unfounded accusations and, despite the Company’s efforts to correct the record, has been vilified for activities that are not only legal, but also widely accepted as a standard component of online advertising in both the political and commercial arenas”.

‘India’s Silicon Valley has become sin valley under Cong’: Things PM Modi said on Karnataka campaign trail

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday addressed massive rallies in Kalaburagi, Ballari, and Bengaluru attacking Congress party on various topics.Seeking to appeal to patriotic sentiments of voters, the prime minister raked up the issue of cross-LoC surgical strikes, claiming the Congress questioned the genuineness of the assault by the Indian Army, as he sought to connect with the voters of the home state of the two legends of the Army.Polling for the 224-member Assembly will be held on May 12, and results will be”declared on the 15th of the month.A total of 2,655 candidates are left in the fray for the May 12 assembly polls. Out of 2,655 candidates, 2,436 are men and 219 women, a statement from the Chief Electoral Officer’s (CEO) office said, a day after the last date for withdrawal of candidature. Here’s what PM Modi said while addressing people in Karnataka► Bengaluru is admired as a ‘Garden City.’ But the Karnataka government is wanting to turn this into a garbage city. They are showing no concern for the city’s need.► A city known as India’s Silicon Valley has become a valley of sin under this incompetent Congress government in Karnataka. Our youth made Bengaluru the computer capital but under the Congress, the city is turning into a crime capital. ► Bengaluru is a cosmopolitan city. The Congress is trying to bring a culture of chaos.► Bengaluru, which was earlier a ‘City of Lakes’, Congress transformed it into a ‘City of Burning Lakes’.► We are working towards promoting ‘Ease of Doing Business’, Congress is ensuring ‘Ease of Doing Murder’.► Congress’ ‘Hawa-Hawai’ manifesto for Karnataka is full of lies.► Women safety is one of the biggest concerns in Karnataka. Crimes against women are on the rise under the Congress government.► Congress would rather prefer our soldiers go with cameras and not guns! But then, this is expected considering how their own senior leader behaved on stage when ‘Vande Mataram’ was being sung► Congress president Rahul Gandhi ‘disrespected’ the national song ‘vande mataram’. Forgetting the national heroes, patriots and history is the nature of a family in the Congress. (Jawaharlal) Nehru and V K Krishna Menon insulted General (KS) Thimayya, who had to resign. They neglected General (K M) Cariappa.► For the last five years, the Karnataka Government is asleep and because of their inertia the state is suffering. Farmers are in distress, Textile, MSME sectors are not getting support and there is rampant corruption. No wonder people are so keen to reject Congress.►Congress promised they will make Kharge Ji CM. They misled the Dalit community. They did sidelined Kharge Ji. This is typically how Congress does their politics. When the BJP is elected the Lotus blooms and people prosper but when the Congress wins only a few families shine. By the way, does anybody know about the assets of Kharge Ji’s family.► Congress government in Karnataka is in ‘sleep mode.’ They did not spend the funds Centre allocated for development of the state► Karnataka has a ‘Sidda-Rupaiah Sarkar’. It has created a debt-burden for the state. People can no longer tolerate them. They will give a strong reply on 12th May► Congress has ruined the rich history and legacy of Ballari. By defaming Ballari, they have disrespected the people of this district► Congress fears loss in Karnataka elections. That is why they are spreading lies about hung assembly. The prime minister also reached out to farmers of Karnataka, saying his government would take up farming of pulses in a big way.Rejecting the Congress claim that it was a champion of Dalit causes, Modi referred to “atrocity” on a Dalit girl in Karnataka’s Bidar. “But the state’s ruling party did not speak about it. They had no candlelight protests,” he said.”This party (Congress) only knows how to prostrate before the members of one family. But we have decided to construct memorials to the tribals who fought against the British since 1857 to 1947 when India became independent,” he said. With agency inputs

HC notice to Maha govt, Bajaj Auto on safety gears for pillion rider

The Bombay High Court has sought the stands of Maharashtra government and two-wheeler major Bajaj Auto on a plea for strict implementation of a Supreme Court order to all two-wheeler manufacturers to equip their vehicles with safety gears for pillion riders.A bench of justices S M Kemkar and M S Karnik sought the stands of the government and Bajaj Auto last week on a plea by an elderly Mumbaikar, Gyan Prakash seeking court’s directions to two-wheeler manufacturers to install proper safety accessories like saree guards and hand grips for pillion riders.Gyan Prakash, 71, had the moved the high court earlier this month for enforcement of the apex court’s February judgement, saying that the government must be asked not to register any two-wheeler which does not conform to the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989 guidelines on safety gears for the pillion riders. The relevant rule 123 provides for mandatory safety measures for pillion riders in the two wheelers before their roll out from factories. The rule says “No motorcycle, which has provision for pillion rider, shall be built without provision for a permanent hand grip on the side or behind the driver’s seat, a foot rest and a protective device covering not less than half of the rear wheel so as to prevent the clothes of the person sitting on the pillion from being entangled in the wheel.” The application also sought a direction to Bajaj Auto Ltd, a leading two-wheeler maker based in Pune, and other companies not to sell scooters and motorcycles without these safety accessories for pillion riders.”The transport commissioner should be directed to submit a compliance report on the Supreme Court order,” the petition by Gyan Prakash said.Seeking replies of the government and the auto major to the petition within two weeks, the high court bench has slated the petition for hearing two weeks after submission of the replies.Gyan Prakash earlier had filed a PIL on the issue in the high court in 2008, but as the apex court was already seized of the matter, the court had disposed of his petition.Gyan Prakash, in his application, had sought that his PIL be revived and heard.

Chief Secretary assault case: Arvind Kejriwal’s private secretary questioned

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s private secretary Bibhav Kumar was questioned on Thursday in connection with the alleged assault on Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash. According to the sources, more people are likely to be questioned by the Delhi Police.Kumar was questioned in the case of alleged assault on Prakash at Kejriwal’s residence on February 19 night.”The replies submitted by Kumar are dissatisfactory and he might be called again to help in the investigation,” police said.Police have already questioned the 11 MLAs who were present at the chief minister’s residence during the meeting in which Prakash had allegedly been attacked. Kejriwal, VK Jain and Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia were also present at the meeting. On February 23, a police team had examined the CCTVs installed at the chief minister’s residence in Civil Lines area and seized the hard disk. The forensic report on the hard disk is still awaited. The alleged assault on the chief secretary had triggered a bitter tussle between the Delhi government and its bureaucrats. The Delhi Police had earlier told a court that during interrogation, Jain said that AAP MLAs Prakash Jarwal and Amanatullah Khan had allegedly surrounded the chief secretary and assaulted him.Earlier, the police had claimed that Kejriwal’s former advisor Jain was questioned but later clarified that Kumar was quizzed at the Civil Lines police station. Jain was, however, questioned in connection with the case in February.Later in March, Jain resigned as Kejriwal’s advisor citing personal reasons and family commitment. A senior officer said that they were likely to call Jain again soon as they need clarity on certain things.A 1984-batch IAS officer, VK Jain was handpicked by Kejriwal after he retired as CEO of Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB). Jain joined as the adviser to CM on September 2017. A close confidante of Kejriwal, Jain was responsible for all the meetings and handling of important documents related to the CM’s office.

The BJP today asked all its nine ministers in Jammu and Kashmir to submit their resignations to enable the party to bring in new faces in the two-year-old Mehbooba Mufti cabinet, party leaders said here today. The BJP has been under pressure ever since two of its ministers — Lal Singh and Chander Prakash Ganga — took part in a rally in support of those accused in the rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl in Kathua. The two ministers subsequently resigned. The BJP leaders said the party wants to bring in new faces in the cabinet and work for the people of the state. Also readKathua Rape Case: BJP to forward resignations of two Jammu and Kashmir ministers to CM Mehbooba MuftiThe state can have a maximum of 25 ministers, including the chief minister, out of which 14 portfolios are with the PDP and the remaining with the BJP.According to top state government sources, the reshuffle is likely to take place on April 20.Also readKathua rape-murder: Father seeks transfer of case outside Jammu and Kashmir, Supreme Court to hear plea at 2 pmThe decision follows hectic parleys between senior BJP leader Avinash Khanna and party legislators, the sources said.Earlier in the day, several legislators met Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti. Also readFormer minister Lal Singh takes out rally for CBI probe in Kathua rape; calls for JK CM Mufti’s resignationThey apprised her about the developmental pace in their areas and brought many of the issues into her notice, an official spokesman said. The legislators who met the chief minister included Shah Mohammad Tantray, Mohammad Ashraf Mir, Surinder Choudhary, Javid Beigh, Ravinder Raina and Er Rasheed. The chief minister enquired from the legislators about the developmental activities in their areas. She also assured them that the demands raised by them would be looked into by the government.Mufti also assigned the charge of the two departments held by former ministers Chander Prakash Ganga and Lal Singh, both of whom resigned recently, to the state’s Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh.J&K Governor N N Vohra had on Monday accepted the resignation of Lal Singh and Ganga, who had participated in a rally in support of a CBI probe in rape and murder case of an eight-year-old girl in Kathua district.

Kathua rape and murder: Heads roll, 2 BJP ministers who tried to defend accused resign

Heads have started rolling in the rape and murder case of eight-year-old tribal nomad girl of Kathua district in Jammu and Kashmir. Two BJP ministers, who had participated in the Hindu Ekta Manch rally supporting the accused and demanding the CBI probe, submitted their resignation to the party state president Sat Sharma.Jammu and Kashmir Minister for Forests and Environment Chaudhary Lal Singh and Industries and Commerce Minister Chander Prakash Ganga submitted their resignation to the part president in Jammu.“Yes they have submitted their resignation to the party president”, Professor Virendra Gupta, BJP spokesman, told DNA.BJP is holding an emergency meeting on Saturday to discuss the future course of action. Sources said most probably the resignation of the two ministers will be accepted and forwarded to chief minister before being accepted. The two leaders, sources said, have resigned on moral grounds saying they did want to sully party image. Sources said the ministers have given authority to state president to take a final call on this issue.Earlier in the day, Industries Minister Ganga hit out at the media houses for launching a smearing campaign against him. “First of all, this is the incident of March 1 (when he and Lal Singh addressed Hindu Ekta Manch rally). I am surprised why after one and half months the country’s media remembered it. We had gone there to defuse the situation and listen to their views and put them before the government. If you hear the CD it is clear that I had said I will not make any false promise and will talk to chief minister”, said Ganga.A first-time BJP MLA from Vijaypur constituency, Ganga landed in a hot soup in April last year when he called for shooting “stone-pelters and traitors” in an apparent bid to bring about peace in the restive valley.“They are the traitors. Whether they live in the country or come from Pakistan, they can only be treated by bullets. If bullets are not there at least they should be punished, like beating them by canes. Mark my words and see whether they will pelt stones again. What ‘azadi’ are they demanding?” Ganga had told reporters on April 19, 2017.Forest Minister Chaudhary Lal Singh has been a habitual offender who has been in the crosshairs of allies and opposition to his remarks. An MLA from Basoli, he was a Congress Lok Sabha member from Udhampur constituency before 2014. Singh once had used objectionable and disparaging remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and praised Rahul Gandhi. The video of his remarks had gone viral. However, he parted ways when he was denied ticket in 2014 parliamentary polls and instead Ghulam Nabi Azad was nominated from Udhampur seat. Singh jumped ship and joined BJP and was elected on their ticket from Basoli constituency.

SC/ST Act: Dalit leaders ask Centre to bring ordinance to restore status quo

Leaders of various Dalit organisations today demanded that the Centre immediately bring an ordinance to restore the status quo of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.They also urged the Union government to include the Act in the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution. The Ninth Schedule provides protection to legislations placed under it. A law placed under the Schedule is not open to judicial scrutiny. At the meeting in Delhi, Dalit leaders announced they would observe April 14 as “Protect Constitution Day” across the country.”The government should issue an ordinance to maintain and restore the status quo of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and put the Act in the Ninth Schedule on the Constitution. We have decided to hold an unified action on April 14 as Protect Constitution Day on Ambedkar Jayanti,” Srinivas Rao, Dalit Shoshan Mukti Manch leader, said.Political leader and activist Prakash Ambedkar, who presided over the meeting, said the government should bring a legislation in the Monsoon Session of Parliament to ensure adequate representation of SCs/STs, Dalits and adivasis in the judiciary.Ashok Bharti of the National Confederation of Dalit and Adivasi Organisations supported Ambedkar’s demands. “Since judiciary is not reforming itself, Parliament should bring a law in the Monsoon Session to ensure that there is an adequate representation of the marginalised (sections) in the judiciary.” The Dalit leaders have threatened street protests if the prime minister does not announce the government decision on August 15, from the ramparts of the Red Fort, to resolve their demands. The Dalit leaders’ demands came after the Supreme Court on March 20 “diluted” the provisions of the Act, ruling that government servants should not be arrested without prior sanction and private citizens, too, can be arrested only after an inquiry under the law.Today, the Centre told the Supreme Court that its judgement on the SC/ST Act has “diluted” the provisions of the law, resulting in “great damage” to the country, and steps may be taken to correct it.

Priya Prakash Varrier’s Oru Adaar Love: Winking forbidden in Islam, claims new plea in Supreme Court

In a fresh plea filed in Supreme Court by two Hyderabad based parties, objection has been raised against the now famous winking scene in actress Priya Prakash Varrier’s movie Oru Adaar Love. According to reports, the applicants want their plea to be heard before SC gives a decision about quashing of criminal proceedings against Varrier and the producer of the movie. The plea citing verses from Quran states that winking in Islam is forbidden. The plea says, “The 30-second clip shows a young schoolgirl and a schoolboy exchanging smiles, eyebrows wiggles and winks from across the way. It has completely captivated audiences but with a wrinkle on the face of religious Muslims”. It describes the song as’ an act of blasphemy’.The Supreme Court in February, this year stayed all criminal proceedings against Priya Prakash Varrier for her wink in the song Manika Malaraya Poovi from the Malayalam film Oru Adaar Love. Additionally, the Apex Court also stayed all criminal proceedings against the film’s producer Joseph Valakuzhy Eapen and director Omar Abdul Wahab. The honourable court, which heard the matter on an urgent basis following the request of the actress’ lawyers the day before, also stated that no FIR can be lodged against them in any state in future for hurting religious sentiments of Muslims. Also readInternet sensation Priya Prakash Varrier goes to mall with her family and this video goes viralEighteen-year-old Priya became an internet sensation following the clip of the song — in which she tweeks her eyebrows and winks at her co-actor Roshan Abdul Rahoof — going viral on social media. Within a week, she became the most searched actress on the internet. And on the other hand, FIRs were lodged against the actress in Maharashtra and Telangana, alleging that the lyrics were offensive and hurt religious sentiments. Subsequently, FIRs were also lodged against the film’s makers.

Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal warns of action against ‘corruption, irregularities’ flagged by CAG

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday warned of “exemplary action” in cases of “corruption and irregularities” as pointed out by the CAG in its report, even as government sources claimed that the AAP dispensation is contemplating to refer such matters for CBI inquiry. The move comes at a time when the AAP government and bureaucrats are at loggerheads since the alleged attack on Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash by some ruling party MLAs at the chief minister’s residence in February.”Exemplary action will be taken against the guilty in each case of corruption or irregularity pointed by CAG. No one will be spared (sic),” Kejriwal tweeted.Sources said that at least 50 cases from the CAG report have been identified by the government so far and the report is being studied for more such cases to be sent for CBI probe.”At least 50 cases from the CAG report have been identified to be sent to CBI for inquiry. The report is being studied and the number of cases to be sent to CBI may increase. The chief minister himself is looking into the report,” they said.Earlier in the day, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia had said that those responsible for the lapses, be it a minister or any officer, will be punished. In his address to the House on the CAG report, Sisodia cited several “shortcomings and lapses” including construction of roads and public distribution system, and hit out at Lt Governor Anil Baijal and bureaucrats.”The CAG report has helped us in identifying rigidities in the system. We will remove the shortcomings and take action against those responsible, be it ministers or officers,” Sisodia said.

UP minister led SBSP to review support to BJP

The Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party (SBSP) today said it will discuss the future of the alliance with the BJP in its meeting soon, just days after supporting the saffron party’s Rajya Sabha candidates in Uttar Pradesh. The SBSP, an ally of the BJP, has four MLAs in the state and its national president, Om Prakash Rajbhar, is a cabinet minister in the Yogi Adityanath government.”We will be holding an emergency meeting of the party executive on March 27 in Lucknow to discuss the issue of continuing support to the BJP,” National Chief General Secretary of SBSP Arvind Rajbhar said here.Arvind is the son of SBSP national chief.”The bureaucracy has become out of control. The situation can be gauged from the fact that an SHO in Azamgarh, when asked to look, into a genuine matter, told Om Prakash Rajbhar to himself get the matter resolved,” he said. Also readBJP leaders accuse ally Om Prakash Rajbhar of misleading peopleThe meeting will also discuss the party’s upcoming conference in Deoria and expansion of the organisation. On SBSP MLAs crossvoting in the RS polls, Arvind said, “No SBSP MLA crossvoted. The party has, however, taken cognisance of media reports and send notices to two MLAs. It is possible that the SP and the BSP are making this allegations to get the SBSP in their alliance after leaving the BJP.” Days before the Rajya Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh, the SBSP had sent shock waves in the corridors of power in the state by skipping the first year celebrations of the Yogi Adityanath government and announcing that its MLAs would not vote for the BJP.The sulking alliance partner SBSP rushed to Delhi and met BJP president Amit Shah to register its complaint that the “big brother BJP” was not following “coalition dharma”.But, after talks with Shah, the SBSP chief appeared mollified and announced that his MLAs would back BJP candidates for the Rajya Sabha polls.”I have met BJP President Amit Shah, who noted points raised by me and said he will visit Lucknow on April 10 and will sit with me, BJP State president and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to get my problems redressed. We have decided to vote for the BJP in Rajya Sabha polls,” Rajbhar had said. Before meeting Shah, Rajbahar had said, “We have made this government and it is our duty to repeatedly point out its shortcomings… Holding celebrations is not going to serve the purpose. Building temples in Mathura and Kashi will not give education to the poor, or toilets and pension to them.”

Bhima Koregaon Violence: ‘No permission for rally tomorrow, hold protest at Azad Maidan in Mumbai’

Mumbai Police has denied permission to Dr Prakash Ambedklar led protest rally tomorrow. “Protesters can protest at Azad Maidan but they are not allowed to take out rally from Rani Bagh to Azad Maidan,” Said DCP Deepak Deoraj, spokesperson for Mumbai Police. Dr Prakash Ambedklar led protesters have been demanding the arrest of Sambhaji Bhide for his alleged involvement in Bhima Koregaon violence. Bharip Bahujan Mahasangh (BBM) president Prakash Ambedkar has been demanding that state government should arrest Hindutva leader Sambhaji Bhide, also known as Bhide Guruji. Prakash Ambedkar had given March 26 as the deadline for the arrest.Addressing a press conference in Vidhan Bhavan earlier this month, Ambedkar said, “There are some organisations which want justice. We all want Sambhaji Bhide to be arrested by March 26. We have given an ultimatum to the government. Else all these organisations will come marching to Mumbai.”A case was registered against Ekbote and Sambhaji Bhide, for allegedly inciting the anti-Dalit violence that left a man dead near the Bhima Koregaon war memorial on January 1.The incident took place during an event to commemorate the bicentenary of the Bhima-Koregaon battle.Subsequent protests had disrupted normal life in Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra.

L-G Anil Baijal accepts V K Jain’s resignation

Lieutenant Governor (L-G) Anil Baijal has accepted the resignation of V K Jain as the advisor to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Jain had resigned from his post earlier this month citing personal reasons and family commitment. He was questioned by the Delhi Police in connection with the alleged assault on Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs at Kejriwal’s residence on February 19.A 1984-batch IAS officer, Jain was handpicked by Kejriwal after he retired as CEO of Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB). Jain joined as the adviser to the CM on September 2017. A close confidante of Kejriwal, he was responsible for all the meetings and handling of important documents related to the CM’s office. He had gone on a week-long medical leave on February 27, days after the Delhi Police told a court that during interrogation, Jain disclosed that AAP MLAs Prakash Jarwal and Amanatullah Khan surrounded the chief secretary and saw them assaulting him at Kejriwal’s residence.Jain had earlier said that he did not seen anything as he had gone to the washroom at the time of the incident. The alleged assault took place in the presence of Kejriwal and his deputy Manish Sisodia.“I am resigning for personal reasons,” Jain had then told DNA.
