Palghar LS bypoll: Poised for a three-way thriller

Palghar is poised to witness an interesting battle with the by-election in this Lok Sabha constituency becoming a prestige issue for the BJP.It was no surprise that UP CM Yogi Adityanath referred to the Palghar bypoll as dress rehearsal for the 2019 general election. The ruling allies, BJP and Sena, are fighting it out in Palghar, with Bahujan Vikas Aghadi, led by Hitendra Thakur, providing extra splash to the battle.Palghar Lok Sabha constituency has six assembly constituencies — Palghar, Vikramgad, Vasai, Nalasopara, Dahanu and Boisar.Incidentally, despite the fact that Bahujan Vikas Aghadi won the Lok Sabha seat in 2009 and has sent three of the six MLAs from the region to the state assembly, Hitendra Thakur has always been with the ruling party of the day, be it Congress or BJP. Sena has two MLAs and BJP has one.The Palghar by-election was necessitated after the sudden demise of BJP MP Chintaman Vanaga, who passed away on January 30. It was expected that someone from Vanaga family would be given a ticketby BJP and the election would be won uno posed. But that did not happen. In a sudden twist in the story, Shiv Sena inducted Shrinivas Vanaga, son of late Chintaman Vanaga, and fielded him as their candidate for the by-election.Alleging backstabbing by Sena, BJP decided to surprise the ally, and Congress, by fielding Rajendra Gavit, a former Congress leader who was a minister in the previous government led by the Congress-NCP.

Palghar bypoll: Maharashtra CM Fadnavis submits ‘original’ audio clip to Election Commission

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today said he had submitted the original audio clip, in which he is heard exhorting the BJP workers to win the Palghar Lok Sabha bypoll using “saam, daam, dand, bhed” (negotiation, money, punishment and division), to the Election Commission (EC).The audio clip is at the centre of a row between the BJP and parties like the Shiv Sena, Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), which have condemned the language and the aggressive tone of Fadnavis in it.Voting for the bypoll will be held tomorrow.Speaking to reporters at the BJP’s Dadar office, Fadnavis said he had submitted the original audio clip to the EC and demanded action against those who had allegedly edited it for political gains.”I have sent the original clip to the EC and requested them to verify it with the clip they have received from other political parties. The EC can take action against me, but I would request it to take action against those who, on purpose, edited the clip for political gains.”It is a 14-minute clip and if you go through it, the truth will come out,” he said.Earlier in the day, state Congress general secretary and spokesperson Sachin Sawant lodged a complaint over the audio clip with the returning officer for the bypoll.Hitting out at Fadnavis, Sawant said, “EC officials should probe the words of Fadnavis as he is claiming to use the law enforcement agencies, money, divisive tactics and muscle power in the Palghar bypoll. The EC should probe what exactly did Fadnavis mean when he talked about the use of muscle and money power.” The Congress leader told reporters that he had submitted the audio clip in a pen drive to the EC officials.Accusing the chief minister of resorting to “dadagiri”, he alleged that BJP workers were guilty of poll code violations as they had put up illegal hoardings and distributed money in the run-up to the bypoll.Sawant alleged that Fadnavis had broken the Model Code of Conduct for elections on earlier occasions as well, but there was no “satisfactory” action against him.”People are wondering whether the EC is working under pressure from the BJP government,” he said.Leaders of the Bahujan Vikas Aghadi, a contender in the Palghar bypoll, also accompanied Sawant when he met the EC officials to lodge the complaint against the chief minister.

Thane-Diva lines to be ready by March 2019

This April, the work on the additional tracks on the Thane-Diva stretch will enter its tenth year, however, the work is nowhere close to complete, showing how seriously the Indian Railways actually take project deadlines. Tired of the seemingly never-ending delay, commuters have now taken to social media to voice their protest. The work for the fifth and sixth lines between Thane and Diva began in 2008 under Mumbai Urban Transport Project-2, however, the authorities haven’t been able to complete the work on the 9.9-km stretch until now. The delay has also resulted in losses to the public exchequer as the project cost has escalated from Rs 133 crore to Rs 440 crore in a decade. Once ready, the lines will segregate long-distance trains from the suburban services thus enabling more suburban local trains to run on the fast line.”The railways are never serious about executing projects beyond Thane. Look at the delay in the work on the 5th and 6th rail lines between Thane-Diva. Is there any deadline for this?” questioned U Patil, a resident of Thane. The Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC), which is completing the project, claims to have faced many hurdles. “There were over 450 illegal structures and buildings that had to be cleared over the years. These were political vote banks that delayed things. Now we aim to get the project ready by March 2019,” said an official from MRVC.The earlier deadline was December 2017. The 5th and 6th lines will run between Kurla LTT-Thane and Diva-Kalyan. It will segregate mail/express services from the local trains and allow Central Railway to add 100 more local train services on the route.NEVER ENDINGThe work for the fifth and sixth lines between Thane and Diva stations began in 2008. The project cost has escalated from Rs 133 crore to Rs 440 crore in a decade.

Separate colonies for pastoral class to cope with cattle menace: Gujarat government

To cope with cattle menace in various cities, the Gujarat government will soon start construction of separate colonies for pastoral class in the urban areas. Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said this during an event held at Gujarat Gopalak Vikas Nigam in Gandhinagar on Tuesday. The CM said that his government also made special allocation for these colonies in all the eight big cities of Gujarat. The Gujarat Gopalak Vikas Nigam had organised a programme to distribute cheques among beneficiaries of different government schemes, which were handed over by Rupani. The CM, addressing the gathering, said, “With the view to avoid traffic hazzles in urban areas and accidents occurring due to cattle menace, we have decided that special colonies for cattle rearing people would be constructed at a distance of 15 to 20 km from the boundaries of civic authorities.””These colonies will be made near each of the eight big cities in Gujarat and those will have all required facilities. The government will give land for these colonies at token rates. We have made a provision for this in our annual budget for the current year. They can sell their milk in urban areas also as their houses will not be so far from cities,” added Rupani. The CM also informed that the state government launched the scheme of providing incentives of up to Rs 3 lakh for cattle farms and spared a budget of Rs 140 crore with the aim of raising 5,000 such farms across the state. The CM also assured the pastoral community that they would not need to move anywhere else in search of water during summer. He said, “The cattle rearing people were forced for to move to other regions during summers or droughts. But our government has taken sufficient measures and I assure that water and fodder will be available for their cattle in days to come and no one will have to worry of tough days.”CM’S ASSURANCEThe CM also assured the pastoral community that they would not need to move anywhere else in search of water during summer. The govt has taken adequate measures to guarantee water and fodder for cattle in days to come.

Nitish Katara case: HC dismisses Vishal Yadav’s parole plea

The Delhi High Court today dismissed a plea of Vishal Yadav, serving life term in the Nitish Katara murder case, for three-month parole for arranging funds for his family.Justice S P Garg denied the relief to the convict who had said he has to sell a property to arrange money and wanted to file an appeal challenging the 2014 order of the high court in the murder case. The court, however, said Yadav can apply for custody parole for the purpose, if he intends to.Vishal had sought a three-month parole to engage a lawyer and make other arrangements to exercise his legal and constitutional rights. The plea was opposed by Delhi police’s Additional Standing Counsel Rajesh Mahajan on the grounds that there was a threat to the life of the victim’s mother Neelam Katara and also to the lone witness in the case.Vishal had claimed there was no one else to look after his daughter, studying in class 10, for her education and that he has to dispose of his property in Ghaziabad’s Vaishali to arrange funds for her studies and his litigation. On August 29 last year, the Supreme Court had dismissed his plea seeking review of its verdict sending him to prison for 25 years. The apex court had also awarded a 25-year jail term to his cousin Vikas Yadav and 20 years in prison for third convict Sukhdev Pehalwan in the case. The top court had earlier dismissed the appeals against their conviction in the case of kidnapping of Katara from a marriage party on the intervening night of February 16-17, 2002 before killing him for his alleged affair with Bharti Yadav, the sister of Vikas Yadav.Bharti is the daughter of Uttar Pradesh politician D P Yadav who is in jail in connection with another murder case.Katara was murdered as Vishal and Vikas Yadav did not approve of his affair with Bharti because they belonged to different castes, the lower court had said in its verdict.

National Investigation Agency probes Maoist investment channels

An ongoing probe by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) is expected to reveal how some Maoist leaders are using various channels of investments to secure money that comes from extortion channels. The NIA probe to track down a leader of the banned CPI (Maoist) led to searches in two offices of Vikas Mutual Benefit Nidhi Limited, a private finance company, in Jharkhand’s capital Ranchi. The searches were conducted based on the information obtained from two suspected Maoist associates, the NIA arrested on March 21 from Latehar district. The two are suspected to have invested money extorted by Maoists in various financial institutions. The two accused, Santosh Oraon and Roshan Oraon, were produced before a special court in Ranchi, following which NIA got their custody for seven days.During searches the NIA seized two laptops, two CPUs, a pen drive and several incriminating documents pertaining to financial transactions done by senior Maoist cadres.”We are scrutinising the documents and the computer data. We expect to get insight into the nature of CPI (Maoist) investments that may lead to more successful operations later” said a NIA official.

Jitender Gogi the most-wanted criminal on police list

Jitender Gogi tops the Delhi Police’s list of most wanted criminals. Amid the unending rivalry between the Gogi gang and their rival gang led by one Sunil alias Tillu, in the outskirts of Delhi, life for the members has often been cheaper than money. In the last one year, three men have lost their lives, in alleged revenge killings. It was just last month when two men were shot and stabbed several times in Bankner Village near Rohini’s Narela while a third youth was injured critically. The two deceased property dealers, Govind (25) and Satish (40), were suspected to be involved with the Jitender Gogi gang.According to police sources, Gogi and his rival Tillu have been running extortion rackets in Alipur and Sonipat areas, which is the main cause of the feud between the two groups. The rivalry between Gogi and Tillu gang was sparked amid student politics in the Delhi University (DU). The dispute gradually took a nasty shape in 2012, when Gogi and his associates allegedly shot at one Vikas, a close associate of Tillu. Gogi was booked for this after which he went absconding. Both the gangs are involved in a number of cases of extortion, murders, attempt to murders and smuggling arms.In 2015, Tillu was arrested by the Sonipat Police and was put behind bars. Presently, Tillu is lodged in Sonipat Jail. While Gogi was looking for a chance to hit back at Tillu, he was also nabbed by the Haryana Police from Sonipat and was later handed over to the Delhi Police. In July 2016, Gogi had escaped from the custody of Delhi Police in Haryana’s Bahadurgarh while being taken for a court hearing by the armed police guards. Since then, he has managed to be on the run. In September 2016, reward on Gogi’s arrest was increased from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 2 lakh.Jitender GogiJitender Gogi, son of Mehar singh, has a Rs 2 lakh bounty on his head. A resident of Alipur village in Delhi, he is wanted in several cases of extortion, murder, attempt to murder, Arms Act, in both Delhi NCR and Haryana. Jitender managed to flee with the help of his armed henchmen after they threw chilli powder in the eyes of four armed Delhi Policemen. The police was taking Jitender to the court in July last year. The RivalryThe rivalry between Gogi and Tillu gang sparked from student politics in the Delhi University (DU). In 2012, Gogi and his associates allegedly shot at one Vikas, a close associate of Tillu. Since then, many lives have been lost following the gang rivalry. Tillu was arrested in 2015 and is lodged in Sonipat jail. Gogi was also arrested in Haryana and was handed over to the Delhi Police. But in 2016, he managed to flee from police custody. Jitender Gogi has been on the run ever since.

Love, hate & horror

Shock and horror gripped the national capital on February 1 when Ankit Saxena’s throat was slit, allegedly by family members of a woman he was courting. Blood spilled out of the 23-year-old photographer’s neck and mouth as he died on a busy street in West Delhi’s Khyala. Hours after the murder, four people, including his alleged girlfriend’s mother, father and uncle, were arrested. Her brother, a minor, was also apprehended for the brutal murder. The family had feared that its daughter would elope with Ankit, and decided to kill him, investigators have said, underlining the horrors of killings executed in the name of so-called honour.Ankit’s murder is only the latest in a series of such crimes. In January, when Dinesh, 30, and her cousin Meenkashi, 23, eloped, they had little idea what lay ahead for them. They were stabbed by two men in East Delhi’s Mayur Vihar area. While Dinesh succumbed to his injuries, Meenakshi somehow survived despite critical her wounds. The police said her gym trainer brother Shankar and his maternal uncle Rinku later confessed that they planned and executed the attack to save their family’s “honour”.We were jeered at: KinInvestigators said the accused claimed that their neighbours and friends were taunting them and their family members after the elopement. The attack took place when the couple was on its way in a cab to meet a lawyer and complete marriage formalities. The police said more family members were involved in conspiring and providing logistics for the attack. In March 2016, a 20-year-old woman was strangulated to death by her mother, a day before she was to get married, after she was caught with a man who lived as a tenant in their Northeast Delhi’s Seelampur house. “The mother then informed her son. They took the body to a local hospital and told doctors that she had committed suicide,” said a police officer. The mother and the son were arrested after doctors noticed ligature marks on the woman’s neck and called the police. The tenant, however, managed to escape. “Such crimes are brutal and heinous. They show how, for many of us, marriages outside caste are a taboo. They reflect the patriarchal and stereotypical nature of our society. The police do their job after every such crime, but the society’s mindset needs to change,” said a senior police officer.28 ‘honour’ crimes in 2014In November 2014, Bhavna Yadav, 21, a final-year student of Delhi University’s Sri Venkateswara College, was strangled to death allegedly by her parents and uncle at their Southwest Delhi home because she had married Abhishek Seth, 24, from another caste and region. Her parents were arrested. The couple had secretly married and then informed Bhavna’s family, who refused to accept the alliance. Abhishek said Bhavna’s father had pleaded with the couple not to make the marriage public as it would destroy the family’s “honour”.Government figures show that 28 “honour killings” were reported in India the same year. Such crimes are under-reported and many such killings are covered up and made to look like suicides. Bhavna, a Yadav from Rajasthan, had married Abhishek, a Punjabi working as an assistant programmer at the Cabinet Secretariat, at an Arya Samaj temple. Her family persuaded her to come home, telling the couple that everything had been forgiven and a proper wedding would solemnise their relationship. Her body was quietly taken to her hometown in Rajasthan’s Alwar for cremation.City’s bloody underbelly”Delhi has two dramatically horrific sides to it. One is always glorified; it tries to keep pace with a fast-developing world. The other continues to perpetrate brutal murders in the garb of rituals and honour,” said another police officer. Ankit’s murder threatened to spark communal tension in western parts of the capital, resulting in heavy deployment of city and central police forces. “We had to be on our toes as religious outfits tried to raise slogans and politicians and social activists swarmed the deceased’s house,” the police officer said. There were the murders of Dipti Chikara (2012) and Asha Saini (2010), both killed by their families in Northwest Delhi after they found out about their boyfriends who came from a “lower” caste or class. In May 2010, Delhi-based journalist Nirupama Pathak was killed allegedly by her family in Jharkhand as she wanted to marry Priyabhansu Ranjan, a man outside her caste. The police arrested Nirupama’s parents and brother for the crime. In April 2013, criminal proceedings against her boyfriend were quashed by the Jharkhand High Court. Nirupama’s family had accused Ranjan of instigating her into committing suicide. The court said no case was made out against him.In February 2002, Nitish Katara, a business executive and a bureaucrat’s son, was murdered by his girlfriend Bharti Yadav’s brother Vikas Yadav, son of then politician DP Yadav, and a cousin. In 2015, the Supreme Court upheld Vikas’ and his cousin Vishal’s conviction and jailed them for 25 years. The court also convicted third convict Sukhdev Yadav alias Pehalwan in the sensational case.Katara was murdered as Vishal and Vikas did not approve of the victim’s affair with Bharti because they belonged to different castes. Katara had gone missing from a wedding in February 2002. Later, his badly charred body was found. His mother Neelam Katara pursued the case relentlessly over years. The Central government informed Parliament in December 2016 that India registered 251 honour killings in 2015 against 28 in 2014, recording a 792% number jump, according to the National Crime Records Bureau. Most cases went unreported in the past or were registered as crimes under the murder category. Uttar Pradesh registered one case in 2014 but topped the list the next year with 131.Massive Spike792% jump in such killings in India between 2014 and 2015, the Centre informed Parliament in December 2016251 killings in 2015 against 28 in 2014131 cases, the most, reported in 2015 from UP where just one such killing was officially registered the previous yearActual figures much higherSuch crimes are under-reported and many such killings are covered up and made to look like suicides. Ichak Dana enthralls Israeli delegation

After an exhaustive session of both restricted and delegation-level talks to explore new avenues of cooperation, the Raj Kapoor’s 1955 classic Hindi film, Shree 420 enthralled the visiting Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu and his delegation.During lunch which PM hosted at the Hyderabad House, one of the music items played by live band was ‘Ichak Dana Bichak Dana’. Netanyahu, his wife Sara and members of delegation were amazed and identified the song. The band played the song twice at the request of delegation members, who with plates in their hands hit the floor.Ministry of External Affairs secretary Vikas Gokhale shared the anecdote. He said soon the band started playing the song, several Israeli delegates immediately recognised the track. Indian diplomats present marveled at this shared cultural experience. “Interesting anecdote was that during lunch which PM hosted short while ago, one of the music items played by live band was ‘Ichak Dana Bichak Dana’. Number of Israelis who knew that was amazing,” Gokhale said. “Films are a good way to building people to people relationships,” he observed.Earlier in the day, Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu said that he and his wife Sara were elated that they will get to see Bollywood up close when they travel to Mumbai. Netanyahu will visit Mumbai on Thursday, where he is slated to attend an exclusive ‘Shalom Bollywood’ event. “My wife and I are very happy, we’re going to Bollywood. We would like to see it first hand,” the Israeli prime minister, popularly known as ‘Bibi’, said at a joint press event with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.Directed and produced by Raj Kapoor, written by Khwaja Ahmad Abbas, and starring Raj Kapoor and Nargis, ‘Shree 420’ revolved around a poor but educated orphan who comes to Bombay with dreams of success.Israeli delegation’s extolling a Bollywood song doesn’t go without purpose. As Israel fights a cultural boycott in the world, the PM Netanyahu had made it a point with his interlocutors to arrange a meeting with India’s tip film directors and producers during his trip to Mumbai. ‘The Shalom Bollywood’ event, choreographed by his advisors and his hosts here is aimed at to fight the cultural boycott. The ‘Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions’ (BDS) campaign has hit Israel. The movement has been backed by people like Stephen Hawking, Angela Davis, Judith Butler, author Alice Walker, ex-Pink Floyd musician Roger Waters and critically acclaimed filmmaker Ken Loach. Last year, when Israel attempted to woo Hollywood stars, none of the 26 Oscar nominees who were awarded free trips turned up.Netanyahu is supposed to appeal to Bollywood to come and shoot films in Israel, and offer tax breaks and facilitation. Both sides on Monday also signed an MoU in Film Co-Production in recognition of the role that films play in promoting people-to-people contact.SONG & DANCEIsraeli team extolling a Bollywood song doesn’t go without purpose. From adultery to Aadhaar: Constitution bench set up to hear important cases doesn’t feature dissenting justices

Amid a virtual rift between the Chief Justice Dipak Misra and four senior-most judges over assignment of important cases, the Supreme Court today announced the composition of a 5-judge constitution bench headed by the CJI, which does not include them.None of the four judges — Justices J Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi, M B Lokur and Kurian Joseph, feature in the list of members of the 5-judge constitution bench. As per official information, the 5-judge bench, comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice A K Sikri, Justice A M Khanwilkar, Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice Ashok Bhushan, will commence the hearing on a range of crucial matters from January 17.Also readSC judges against CJI: Everything has been settled, says Attorney General K K VenugopalMeanwhile, court sources said it was not confirmed whether the CJI today met the four judges who had hurled accusations against him at their controversial press conference on January 12.As per the list of business for tomorrow, the 5-judge bench will hear major cases such as those challenging the constitutional validity of the Aadhaar Act and its 2013 judgement re-criminalising gay sex between consenting adults. Also readSC judges against CJI: Not politicising judiciary, says CongressThe same combination of judges had last year heard various constitution bench matters from October 10, including the power tussle between the Centre and the Delhi government over administrative jurisdiction and a matter relating to passive euthanasia. This bench would also hear the contentious issue of the ban on the entry of women between 10 and 50 years of age in Kerala’s Sabarimala temple and resume hearing a legal query on whether a Parsi woman would lose her religious identity if she marries a man from a different religion. Also readLet Constitution bench hear sensitive cases: Jurists to CJIAnother contentious matter relates to the challenge to the validity of a penal law on adultery, which only punishes a married man for having an extra-marital sexual relationship with a woman married to someone else. The other issues to be dealt with by constitution bench include the pleas, which have raised a question as to when will a lawmaker, facing criminal trial, stand disqualified. All these matters were earlier referred to larger benches for adjudication by different benches of the apex court. The daily list of business for tomorrow shows that the two PILs seeking probe into Loya’s death are listed before a bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra, against whom aspersions were cast by a senior advocate in public. In their unprecedented press conference on Friday, the four senior judges of the apex court had mounted a virtual revolt against the CJI, listing a litany of problems, including the assignment of cases. They had also raised questions over listing of PILs concerning Loya’s death. An office bearer of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) said a copy of their resolution was submitted by its president Vikas Singh to the CJI yesterday, but have not heard anything from the top court as yet.Singh had expressed hope that all judges of the apex court would consider the SCBA resolution seeking a full court discussion to defuse the crisis plaguing the higher judiciary. The SCBA, at an emergency meeting on Saturday (rpt Saturday), had passed the resolution expressing grave concern over the differences of four senior-most judges with the CJI.It had said that all public interest litigation (PIL) matters, including the pending PILs, should be either taken up by the CJI or be assigned for adjudication to four senior judges who are part of the apex court collegium.

Kamala Mills Fire: Accused Vishal Karia gets bail

On Monday, the accused Vishal Karia, at whose place the police had found the car of prime accused Abhijeet Mankar, co-owner of 1 Above, got bail. Karia was booked under Section 216 of the Indian Penal Code for harbouring an offender after the police found an Audi car belonging to prime accused Abhijeet Mankar, co-owner of the ‘1 Above’ pub, at his residence. On January 10, the Bhoiwada magistrate court remanded him to police custody till January 17.Karia approached the Bombay High Court today challenging his police remand, saying that he had no connection to the fire incident. He said since the offence was bailable, the magistrate’s order remanding him to week-long police custody must be quashed. Also readKamala Mills Fire: Absconding owners Kripesh Sanghavi and Jigar Sanghavi arrested from MumbaiHe said he had merely kept the accused’s car at his house, and should not be penalised since the “car had not committed any crime”.Justice Revati Mohite-Dere, who was presiding over Karia’s plea, asked the police if it had intentions of booking Karia under any other sections of the IPC based on their probe. The Special Public Prosecutor told the court that they had “not found any material to link Karia with the main offence of the fire, or for any other offence” but for keeping the car at his residence while the owner was absconding. The SPP, however, objected to Karia’s plea arguing that he was arrested in connection with the incident of fire in which several people had been killed and hence, he must be dealt with severity.”However, if you have not found any other material against him then keeping him in continued custody for a bailable offence does not make sense. He can apply for bail as a matter of right in such a circumstance,” Justice Mohite-Dere said.

Won’t allow anti-India activities in Kashmir, says Army chief General Rawat

In a stern message to Pakistan, Army chief General Bipin Rawat asserted on Monday that the Army will not allow anti-India activities to succeed in Jammu and Kashmir and it was ready to escalate military offensive to combat cross-border terrorism if Islamabad forces it to do so.Addressing Army personnel on the occasion of Army Day, Rawat also said that disputes along the Line of Actual Control with China were continuing and the Army was trying to stop the Chinese transgressions.”Ensuring security along the Line of Actual Control (with China) is our main duty,” he said without elaborating further.Talking about the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, he said the Pakistan Army has been continuously trying to help terrorists sneak into India along the Line of Control (LoC) in J&K.”We will not let these anti-national elements to succeed at any cost. If we are forced, then we may escalate our military action and carry out (the) ‘other action’,” he said. The Army has been adopting a ‘tit-for-tat’ approach in dealing with ceasefire violations by Pakistani troops as well as foiling infiltration bids by terrorists.”The Army is using its might to teach them a lesson,” the Army chief said, adding that, “terrorists and their handlers are creating various challenges within the country by adopting new tactics.”Rawat said the Army will continue to give a befitting reply to Pakistani action along the border.”Targeting of Amarnath pilgrims, attacking policemen and Army personnel from Jammu and Kashmir, including murder of Lt Ummer Fayaz, were attempts to attack national unity and divide the society,” Rawat said.Young Army officer Fayaz, from Kulgam district, was killed in May last year when he had gone to Shopian to attend the marriage of one of his relatives.Talking about Pakistan’s proxy war and evolving security challenges facing the region, Gen Rawat asked the forces to remain ready to face any eventuality.”We will have to keep high-level of readiness” to deal with any eventuality, he said.On defence spending, Rawat said it acts as an engine of economic growth. The armed forces are expecting higher allocation in the budget for 2018-19.”Size of our defence budget is sixth globally. 30 per cent of the defence budget is spent on procurement of weapons. A portion of it is spent on the country’s development and providing jobs. The defence budget should be looked as engine of development,” he said.Referring to the security situation in several states of the northeastern region, he said the Army’s intelligence based operations have contained militancy to a large extent. He also cautioned that success is never permanent and the troops will have to continue their hard work to deal with any security challenge.Rawat said there has been sustained efforts to enhance capability of the Army and that contracts worth Rs 30,000 crore have been finalised in 2017-18.Talking about modernisation of the infantry, he said the focus was on futuristic weapon systems. The Army’s aviation wing is being bolstered by inducting new helicopters. He said the missile system in the Army’s air defence is also being strengthened. He said cadre review of JCOs (junior commissioned officers) and other ranks have been approved which has resulted in the creation of 479 additional posts of Subedar major, 7,769 posts of Subedar, 13,466 naib subedars, 58,493 havaldars and 64,930 naiks. The Army chief also said that an Aadhar-based mobile application is being developed through which Army personnel will be able to post their grievances online. The aim is to resolve their grivances as soon as possible, he said. The Army chief also awarded the sena medal to a number of Army personnel.

Delhi HC directs Centre to place rules on VVIP car registration numbers

The Delhi High Court on Monday asked the Centre to place before it the rules regarding the display of only the State Emblem of India on cars of constitutional authorities and dignitaries such as the President, instead of their registration numbers.A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar directed the concerned ministry to check the actual position and inform it before the next date of hearing on February 26.”Please ascertain the exact position and place it before us,” the bench said after the counsel for the Centre sought more time to file a response. Also readDelhi HC upholds ED action against Virbhadra SinghThe court’s directions came on a plea seeking to enforce the display of registration number on cars of constitutional authorities and dignitaries. The petition, filed by an NGO Nyayabhoomi, claimed that the practice of displaying the state emblem of four lions, instead of the registration numbers, make the cars conspicuous and the dignitaries become easy targets for terrorists and anyone with malicious intent. Also readDelhi High Court dismisses PIL for withdrawal of coins with religious images”The practice of replacing the registration mark with the State Emblem of India, instead of displaying them both, is arbitrary and symptomatic of the desire to rule rather than to serve,” the petition alleged. The public interest litigation (PIL) by NGO’s secretary Rakesh Agarwal also sought direction to the Delhi government and Delhi Police to seize the cars used by theRashtrapati Bhawan, Vice President, Raj Niwas and Protocol division of the Ministry of External Affairs for not being registered under the Motor Vehicles Act.The plea referred to an RTI response by the Ministry of External Affairs saying none of its 14 cars maintained by its protocol division were registered. On the other hand, the plea claimed that the Rashtrapati Bhawan refused to supply the registration numbers of its cars on the ground that disclosure of such information would endanger the security of the state and life and physical safety of the President. It said a person meeting with an accident involving such a car cannot bring any claim against it as due to the absence of any identification mark, the vehicle’s ownership cannot be known and the citizens get the message that if a dignitary could disobey the law and get away with it, so could they.It also sought prosecution of the owners of cars being used by such dignitaries in a time-bound manner and sought a direction to the ministries of home affairs and external affairs to register the cars used by the dignitaries and obtain their insurance policies.

Rahul Gandhi seeks Lord Hanuman’s blessings before entering Amethi, BJP calls temple visit a ‘show’

Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Monday began his two-day tour of Uttar Pradesh with a visit to a famous Hanuman temple before entering his parliamentary constituency Amethi. The Congress president offered prayers at the Churva Hanuman Mandir at Bachchrawa en route Amethi from Lucknow.A few BJP local leaders and workers tried to show him black flags and indulged in clashes with Congressmen at Salon where Rahul addressed a ‘nukkad sabha’. Police used mild force to separate the clashing groups. A few BJP supported traders raised anti-Rahul slogans and downed their shutters in protest against the alleged attack on BJP workers.Rahul also took part in a ‘khichdi puja’ on the occasion of ‘makar sankranti’ at Salon in his mother’s parliamentary constituency Raebareli. Also readWhat China does in two days, Modi govt takes one year: Rahul Gandhi in AmethiTaking a dig at the Congress president, the BJP said Rahul’s temple visit was “just for show”.BJP general secretary Arun Singh said if Gandhi was serious about visiting temples, he would have gone to one for blessings when he was elevated to the post of party president. Also readPosters in Amethi show Rahul as ‘Ram’, PM Modi as ‘Ravana'”It is our tradition that we go to temples and seek divine blessings after assuming a new responsibility. He did not go to any temple when he became Congress president while he had been visiting temples during the Gujarat polls. It just highlights that his temple visits are just for show,” Singh said. A poster war between Congress and the BJP also ensued on Rahul’s visit. In one of the posters, Congress workers described Rahul as Lord Ram and Modi Ravana and predicted ‘Rahul Raj’ in 2019. In another poster, Rahul was shown as Lord Krishna and UPCC President Raj Babbar as Arjun. The BJP workers, on the other hand, countered the Congress by putting up posters to welcome “a missing MP in his parliamentary constituency”.Unfazed by the BJP protest and black flags, the AICC President alleged that both the Modi and Yogi governments have failed to deliver results. “Both talks big and do lip service instead of working for the development of the farmers, youth and the poor both governments are at the disposal of the rich and corporate houses. Development has come to a halt and unemployment is on the rise,” he charged.Amidst big applause, Rahul promised to set-up the Mega Food Park in Amethi when Congress returns to power.“Both Modi and Yogi governments are pursuing politics of hatred to divide people and the country. We will set-up the Food Park and finish other projects started by the Congress government,” he promised.Rahul is on a two-day visit to his parliamentary constituency, first after becoming AICC President. He was given a warm welcome by UPCC President Raj Babbar, senior party leaders and hundreds of workers at the Amausi Airport in Lucknow from where he went by road to Amethi. On the way, he asked his convoy to stop at a tea stall in Nigoha where the AICC president had ‘kulhad ki chai’, hot boiling ‘pakauris’ and crispy samosas. He also held a conversation with local people to take political pulse of the area.As his entourage neared Bachchrawan, border to Rae Bareli and Amethi, Rahul again signaled to stop. Sporting a ‘bhagwa’ (saffron) scarf, he straight away went to the famous Lord Hanuman temple at Churva. He paid obeisance, sought blessings of Lord Hanuman and accepted ‘ladoos’ as ‘prasad’ before crossing over to his parliamentary constituency. At several places, people were queued up to congratulate him for taking over party’s reigns in his hands. At Harchandpur, he stopped at a school, had a chat with students and gave them autograph. He will tomorrow visit Mushafirkhana, Gauriganj, Jais, Jagdishpur town. After addressing a meeting at Tiloi, he will return to Delhi.

NGT directs CGWA to report to DJB with groundwater data in Delhi

The National Green Tribunal has directed the Central Ground Water Authority (CGWA) to inform the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) about the latest groundwater data in the national capital within a week.A bench headed by Acting Chairperson Justice U D Salvi asked the CGWA to apprise the DJB regarding extraction of groundwater by the industries in highly exploited areas.”Looking to the progress in the present cases and considering the role of CGWA in regulation, control, development and management of groundwater resources in the country, we direct the CGWA to communicate to the DJB about latest available groundwater data…within a week,” the bench said. The tribunal warned that it would take coercive measures if the direction was not complied with within the stipulated time.During the hearing, the counsel appearing for the CGWA told the green panel that the 2017 policy for groundwater consumption “is in the making” and the groundwater data for such policy was available with it.Also readAmarnath Shrine Board to file review petition against NGT order The matter will be heard on February 9.Earlier, the tribunal had directed the Secretary concerned of the Delhi government, CEO of the DJB and managing director of the Delhi State Industrial andAlso readNGT refuses to entertain plea for ‘one family, one car’ policyInfrastructure Development Corporation Ltd to hold a meeting on the issue of extraction of water by industries in Narela and Bawana. It had also rapped the city government and the DJB over illegal borewells in Narela and Bawana industrial areas in the city which had led to serious depletion of water levels. The NGT had taken exception to the “abuse” of its interim order by the Delhi government to allow borewells in these industrial areas. The tribunal was hearing petitions filed by the NGT Bar Association and Raj Hans Bansal opposing the illegal use of groundwater in Delhi. The green panel had in 2014 set up committees comprising officials of the DJB, the CGWA, the city government and other bodies to seal the illegal borewells in these industrial areas and file a comprehensive report. It had also ordered the committees to prepare a comprehensive report on how many borewells were operating in the industrial pockets, including Bawana andNarela, and whether they had permission from the competent authority or were registered with the Delhi administration.Taking serious note of the “water scarcity” in Delhi, the tribunal had pulled up the authorities for failing to perform their statutory administrative obligation in ensuring adequate water supply.

SC judges against CJI: Justice Dipak Misra assures BCI delegation that crisis will be resolved soon

Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra today assured a Bar Council of India delegation that the crisis in the Supreme Court resulting from a virtual revolt against him by four colleagues will be sorted out soon, the council chief said. Also today, the son of special CBI judge B H Loya said in Mumbai that his father died of natural causes and not in suspicious circumstances. Loya’s death, while he was hearing the politically sensitive Shohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case, is the subject of a PIL in the Supreme Court that was one of the triggers for the revolt against Misra. The Indian judiciary was thrown into a turmoil on Friday when four senior Supreme Court judges — J Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi, M B Lokur and Kurian Joseph – convened an unprecedented press conference to complain about “selective” case allocation by Misra and passing of certain judicial order. Misra had assigned the Loya death PIL to Justice Arun Mishra, a relatively junior judge. In their press conference, the four justices said India’s democracy is at risk unless the wrongs in the Supreme Court are set right.Capping a weekend flurry of activity by jurists, lawyers and politicians, a delegation of the Bar Council of India, the highest body of lawyers in the nation, today met Misra at his residence for 50 minutes. Also readSC judges against CJI | Don’t politicise the matter: Bar Council”We met CJI in a congenial atmosphere and he said everything will be sorted out soon,” BCI chairman Manan Kumar Mishra, who led the delegation, told reporters. He said that before meeting the CJI, the panel also discussed the crisis plaguing the apex judiciary with other judges including the three out of the four judges who have made the allegations against Misra. Also readSC judges against CJI: There is no crisis, says Justice Ranjan GogoiMishra said the panel met justices Chelameshwar, Lokur, and Joseph, who also gave an assurance that the crisis will be resolved. He did not mention whether the panel had a meeting with Gogoi, who is out of town. Gogoi is next in line to succeed Misra as the chief justice. The BCI will hold a press conference tomorrow.Earlier, Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) president Vikas Singh met the CJI and handed over a resolution in which the association has asked for a full court discussion to defuse the present crisis.”I met the CJI and handed over a copy of the resolution. He said that he would look into it and ensure there was congeniality in the Supreme Court at the earliest,” Singh told PTI after his 15-minute meeting with the CJI.In another major development today, Anuj Loya, the son of the deceased CBI judge, held a press conference in Mumbai to say his family was “pained” by the recent developments surrounding his father’s death. He claimed NGOs and politicians should stop “harassing” his family members over the issue.”My father died of natural causes. Our family is convinced that it was a natural death,” the 21-year-old Anuj told reporters, adding that although he and his family had earlier been suspicious about his father’s sudden death three years ago, they no longer harboured doubts.”I had an emotional turmoil, hence I had suspicions about his death. But now we don’t have any doubts about the way he died,” Anuj said.”Earlier, my grandfather and aunt had some doubts about his death, which they shared. But now neither of them has any doubts,” he said. The deceased judge’s father and Anuj’s aunt had alleged foul play in his death.Judge Loya, who was hearing the sensitive Sohrabuddin Sheikh “fake encounter” case, had allegedly died of a cardiac arrest in Nagpur on December 1, 2014, when he had gone to attend the wedding of a colleague’s daughter.

Chopper crash: Voice data recorder traced, hunt on for missing crew members

The Coast Guard has traced the Aircraft Voice Data Recorder (VDR) of the Pawan Hans helicopter which crashed off the Mumbai coast yesterday while the recovery of the remaining debris is in progress.Simultaneously, the Navy has widened its search operations for the two missing crew members of the chopper. “Search for the missing ONGC crew continues till recovery. Aircraft Voice Data Recorder (VDR) has been recovered and recovery of balance debris is in progress,” a Coast Guard spokesperson said today. The helicopter with seven people on-board, including five ONGC officers and two pilots, crashed off the Mumbai coast minutes after it took off for the state-owned company’s oil installation in the Arabian sea yesterday.Five bodies were recovered yesterday, the Coast Guard and the Navy said in their statements earlier. A Navy spokesperson said today that the two Fast Interceptor Crafts, INS Tarasa and the frigate INS Teg were coordinating the search in the area along with Indian Coast Guard (ICG) Ships Samudra Prahari, Achook and Agrim. The INS Makar (a twin hulled catamaran hydrography ship) from Karwar was also en route to area to augment search efforts, he said. Also readONGC chopper carrying five Dy GMs falls into seaThe ICGS Samrat also sailed out from Mumbai to join the search and rescue operations, he said. Besides, ICG Dornier from Daman, IN Seaking 42 B from Shikra (helibase) and nine ONGC Vessels were also deployed for search in the area, he said. The ONGC vessel TAG 15 undertaking side scan sonar operations has found some debris 600 yards from the wreckage position, the spokesperson said. The diving team from Samudra Sevak vessel is preparing to undertake the search while the team from INS Teg is kept on standby, he said. The Pawan Hans helicopter with five Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) officers, including three of the level of Deputy General Managers, went missing around 10.40 am yesterday. ONGC, Coast Guard and Navy pressed helicopters and speed boats as soon as the information of the chopper going missing was received at the Juhu helibase. ONGC has key oil and gas fields off the Mumbai coast and Pawan Hans helicopters routinely ferry company employees and officers to the oil installations that are situated as far as 160 kilometres from the coastline. The field in the offshore include Mumbai High, the nation’s largest oil field and Bassein fields, the largest gas field. The helicopter crash is not the first accident in ONGC’s history. In August 2003, an Mi-172 helicopter crashed off the Mumbai coast killing 27 people and pilot on-board. Pawan Hans Ltd said in a statement that the French-made Dauphin SA 365N3 helicopter met with an accident and the chopper crash is being probed by the aviation regulation DGCA.

West Bengal: On Makar Sankranti 2018, Ganga Sagar Mela witnesses record crowds

The West Bengal government on Saturday announced that the number of people visiting Ganga Sagar islands would beat all previous records. The government has claimed that 18-20 lakh people have so far visited the island and the number is likely to increase on occasion of Makar Sankranti, the government claimed.Last year around 15 lakh pilgrims had visited the mela. This year, already we have crossed that mark and nearly 20,00,000 people are here, the government announced, according to an Indian Express report. Some people even shared images of their visit to the spot.On Saturday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee welcomed everyone to Ganga Sagar Mela for the festivities.Earlier, the government along with the state disaster management department and the telecommunications department of the West Bengal police, state inter-agency group and national institute of amateur radio started a website – ‘myham.in’ – has been put up, which, authorities claim will help in getting lost persons back to their families.A missing complaint can be put up online with the missing persons’ name, address and photograph, with the help of this website. The complainant will get a docket number against each such complaint. Police and members of ‘ham radio’ will look for the missing person and complainant would be able to track the progress of their complaint with the help of the docket number.About 50 members of Ham Radio Club have been working at Ganga Sagar Mela trying to help missing persons. Two temporary ham radio stations have also been put up with the help of which along with the website, people can be updated about missing persons and search operations. In particular cases, voice messages of the lost persons can also be uploaded on the website. This is because at times, officials are unable to comprehend the language of the lost. If the person’s own voice is heard, his/her family members are likely to understand better. The government, meanwhile, has decided to double the power supply to Sagar Island. A senior official at the power department said power supply to the Sagar Island has been increased from 8.9 million units (MU) to 16 MU per day. “This has been decided keeping in mind the interests of millions of people visiting the Sagar Island. We will be supplying 16 MU every day for the next few days,” the official said.Six power generators have also been set up at the venue to address any emergency situation. “At least 10 centres have been set up at the mela ground… Of the 300 power department officials assigned on duty at the fair, 50 will be stationed at these centres… The electrical apparatuses, including the high and low-tension wires, have been repaired,” said the official.

Curiosity triggers compassion when it comes to generation collaboration

There are times when we get stuck in major policy debates because we are too convinced of the position we have taken. How do we overcome the logjam in such situations?Let me take a concrete case of the recent efforts to galvanise the administrative machinery of 115 most economically backward districts to fast track in provision of basic needs and improve productivity there. They are also called as aspirational districts. Why have these regions remained economically backward is a reason that has not been adequately asked. Ideally each district have Shodhyatras, learning walks in every block to understand the roots of market and state failure one would notice perhaps that in many cases the mismatch between allocative rules and community constraints that have led to present situation. One may also find that resources in which these regions are rich have never been mapped. We have only focused on what these region lacked and therefore provide them.A genuine curiosity liberates us from the constraints of known answers top easy to know questions. If we move towards hitherto unasked questions, we may find so far unknown answers. The beauty is that many of these answers will require collaboration among actors who may have never worked together. For instance, if a curious collector asks a question about the unexploited or under exploited resources in her district she might find unique skills, biodiversity, rocks & soils, crafts and traditional food recipes/formulations, uncultivated foods etc; just as flex seed earlier consumed by horses became a functional food because of its nutritional and health restoring properties, similarly many new foods ignored so far might be found. Likewise, there might be skills such as wood carving or stone sculpting or bamboo jewellery making which may find consumers among urban markets globally. When does a resource become an opportunity depends upon intensity of curiosity and willingness to collaborate. If your curiosity tells you what to do, the collaboration helps in finding how to do.Take the case of education. If healthy elderly people are invited to schools to talk about the wisdom of traditional foods, it is possible that children will become curious to find more information. Curiosity triggered in school, may lead to conversation at home and parents may take appropriate action at market place. Curiosity may trigger therefore a conversational change of action which may reach right upto the policy makers. One of the southern states recently announced incorporation of millets in Mid Day Meal Scheme. Honeybee Network and SRISTI has been campaigning for it more than 2 decades. Unless, individual curiosity is transformed into institutional curiosity, large scale public policy changes seldom takes place. If you think strongly about a need for change for the larger social good, don’t expect people to accept your view merely because you are asserting it loudly. To trigger their curiosity which may help in discovering same answers that you are searching for and then the convergence of curious minds may lead to desirable change.

Palghar teacher translates books into Warli dialect for tribal kids

With a view to make learning easy for hundreds of tribal students in and around Palghar, a school teacher from a zilla parishad school in Palghar has translated all the school text books in the local dialect. Rajan Garud, who teaches at the zilla parishad school in Khorichapada in Palghar district, has translated the study material in Warli — which is the local dialect of the tribal community residing in the area. Garud recently exhibited his unique teaching experiment at the Shikshanaachi Wari — an initiative of the state education department showcasing innovative teaching methods held in Ratnagiri. “All the students that come to our school belong to the Warli community and speak their local dialects. For them, any other language, including Marathi, is like a foreign language. Due to this language barrier , they find it difficult to cope with studies. In order to aid the whole learning process , I came up with the idea of translating textbooks into their local language,” said Garud. In the beginning, Garud translated the textbooks for class 1 and self published those books. He then slowly began teaching all the concepts in different subjects with the help of the local language. “Before teaching A for Apple, we taught kids different alphabets through words in the local language. Slowly, we then transitioned from Warli to Marathi and then English.” Garud now plans to expand his work to other regional dialects and encourage teachers from other schools take up similar initiatives. “There are many such communities which find it difficult to study due to the language barrier. If such language-friendly material is made available to all, it would be a great thing for encouraging education,” he said.

Army to open schools for martyrs’ children

The Army will open two boarding schools exclusively for children of martyrs and disabled soldiers after the Centre put a cap on their education fee. The proposal has got a nod from the government and the schools should be set up in the next three to four years. One of the schools will be located in Pathankot and the other in Central or South India — Bhopal and Secunderabad are the two options. The government was under pressure to roll back the Ministry of Defence (MoD) order putting a monthly cap of Rs 10,000 on education fees for children of martyrs and disabled soldiers belonging to Army, Navy, and Air Force. Navy Chief Admiral Sunil Lanba in his capacity as Chairman Chiefs of Staff Committee had earlier asked the government to revoke the order which ended fee waier on tuition, hostel, uniform, books etc to kids of martyrs. There have been several representations made to the MoD to revoke the order as it is likely to demoralise the families of soldiers. The decision to restrict it to Rs 10,000 per month was taken in September this year.ProposalThe Army proposal to open two schools for martyr’s kids have received government nod. One will be located in Pathankot and the other in Central or South India.

‘Saying ‘go and die’ does not amount to abetment of suicide’

Merely stating that one should “go and die” does not amount to abetment to suicide, the sessions court held while granting bail to a 35-year-old Kurla resident, who was arrested for abetting the suicide of his wife. The court referred to a citation produced by the defence advocate, which specified that there are other circumstances too which should be taken under consideration to prove the guilty.Seemon Mosapugo had approached the court seeking for bail. According to the prosecution’s case, the accused was allegedly having an extramarital affair, because of which he was ignoring his marital and parental responsibilities. The accused had allegedly left the wife in such a position that she had to buy vegetables on credit from the vendors. On December 4, 2017, when he came home around 8am, the duo had a verbal fight. The accused, in a fit of rage, asked her to go to her parents or die.The victim left her house with her child, dropped him off his school and later set herself ablaze and jumped into Mithi river. An abetment to suicide case was registered against the accused at Kurla police station. The court, after going through the evidence, held that whether it was a case of abetment to suicide or not will be considered at the time of trial.

Govt to kick-start wildlife birth control project from Uttarakhand

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) is going to kick-start its project to control wild animal population through contraceptives from Uttarakhand with a pilot on Rhesus Macaque monkeys, ministry officials said. After years of deliberations, the MoEF&CC recently approved a Rs 10 crore funding for ‘immunology contraception’ of Rhesus Macaque Monkeys, Asian elephants, nilgais, and wild boars. The project that will be executed along with Wildlife Institute of India (WII), Dehradun, and National Institute of Immunology, Delhi, also involves research and development of a home-grown vaccine for wildlife birth control. The project is aimed specifically at these four species as their numbers have gone up resulting in crop damages and increased conflict in human habitations, scientists and ministry officials said. A senior ministry official said that for the pilot on monkeys in Uttarakhand and for the initial stages of the birth control project, the vaccines will be imported. The official also added that in the case of elephants, they would have to seek a nod from the Supreme Court, which has stayed contraception of elephants in an ongoing matter.”The numbers of monkeys, nilgai, elephants, and boars have gone up, leading to a conflicted situation. There are several ways to deal with this. Till we are able to control their population, we cannot control conflict. Reproductive control to bring down their numbers is one solution. This is the first time we are doing this in our country and it is a challenge,” said Vinod Mathur, Director, WII. “The project is still at quite a nascent stage and we will first set-up a lab,” he added.Human-wildlife conflict is common across most states in the country. But, in the past few years three of these four species – monkeys, nilgais and boars – have been declared vermins in some state, allowing state governments to cull them. The state governments of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are grappling with the issue of conflict with monkeys and wild boars respectively, and the crop damage they inflict. In Rajasthan and Bihar, nilgais are at the centre of this problem, largely confined to crop depredations. As far as elephants are concerned, there is a significant scale of conflict with humans across the central-eastern landscape and in southern India. Human-elephant conflict led to 423 human deaths in 2016-17 with a bulk of the fatalities concentrated in West Bengal, Assam, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha. Also, the government paid Rs 109 crore as compensation to farmers between 2014 to 2015 and 2016 to 2017 for damage caused by elephants.Mathur added that the challenge is manifold as there is no easy way of administering the birth-control vaccine. “What vaccine should we use? Do we administer it surgically or orally? These are some of the issues confronting us.We also need to take into consideration if the animals are pregnant when the vaccine is to be administered.”

City’s minimum temperature rises to 2-yr high

From experiencing the coldest day (13.6 degrees Celsius) of the season five days ago, Mumbai is witnessing a sudden rise in temperatures. Resignation of senior University of Mumbai prof kept hanging

Over a month after a senior professor from the University of Mumbai tendered his resignation, the varsity is yet to accept it and has asked him to continue his duties until it gives the nod. Dr Sanjay Ranade, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Communication and Journalism, had tendered his resignation in November 2017 citing the overall mess at the university as a reason for his decision. Ranade had recently come under the scanner after the former head of the department, Dr Sunder Rajdeep, registered a case against him and his colleague Daivata Patil in September under the Prevention of Atrocities Act at the BKC police station. Rajdeep had alleged that Ranade and his colleague Patil used casteist slurs against him. With the case still ongoing, the varsity has not accepted his resignation and asked him to continue his duties until a decision is taken in this regard. A letter addressed to Ranade by the incharge Registrar Dinesh Kamble has asked him to attend classes to ensure it does not affect the day-to-day functioning of the department. “ As per the norms, the administration has decided to not accept Ranade ‘s resignation until the case is ongoing,” said Kamble. Ranade said he has been doing his duties religiously since the resignation was not yet accepted. “The letter by the registrar is based on false allegations made by some people who want to tarnish my image,” he added.

Caste(ing) ouch! Development takes a back seat

Contrary to their claims of contesting Ajmer by-elections on the issue of development, both Congress and BJP have been putting more emphasis on caste equations. Both the parties have been eyeing voters from castes other than their core vote bank. The BJP clearly indicated that it was eyeing Jats, who are around 2.5 lakh, by fielding Ramswaroop Lamba who is the son of Sanwar Lal Jat whose death a few months ago necessitated by-election on this seat. The BJP is hoping to cash in on sympathy vote. The ruling party is also trying hard to pacify Rajput community. While parliamentary affairs minister Rajendra Singh Rathore was made election in-charge, the party also managed to bring back Surendra Singh Shekhawat, former chairman of municipality who rebelled against the party in the municipal corporation elections. Rawat community is considered traditional BJP supporter. The party asked five-time MP from this seat Rasa Singh Rawat to become active in election campaign. Chief minister Vasundhara Raje even called him to Jaipur to have a word personally. Moreover, former district president (rural) Navin Sharma’s suspension was revoked who had contested against the party in the last assembly election from Masuda. Similarly, former MLA Devi Shanker Bhutra who contested against the party from Beawar was also re-inducted into party.Political experts also believe that nine Muslim candidates have entered into the fray to divide minority votes at the behest of a minister. Interestingly, all these candidates belong to different assembly segments. Not just the BJP, but the Congress is also relying on caste management. The party fielded Raghu Sharma to make inroads into BJP’s traditional Brahmin vote base. The Congress considers that Muslims would vote for it still they are not taking any chance and hence the young leader Wajid Cheeta was taken back into party. The Congress would be in a comfortable spot if it manages to rope in Rajputs and Brahmins along with its traditional Muslim vote bank. Also, BJP has deployed MLAs to keep an eye on voters of every caste. Legislators from different castes have been sent to Ajmer constituency to stay in touch with voters of their respective communities and if they find it necessary tours of union and state ministers will be arranged.

For a cause: Kidney transplant survivor to run 21K marathon

With an aim to spread the message among people to stay fit and healthy, Shibani Gulati, a kidney transplant survivor, will be running 21 km in Tata Mumbai Marathon for the fifth time. Gulati, who underwent a kidney transplant in 2010, was motivated to run the marathon to keep herself fit and change the thinking of people that organ transplant survivors can’t run a marathon.Speaking about her journey, Shibani Gulati (38), said, “When I wanted to train myself for the marathon, few gym trainers refused to coach me stating that physical activity will hamper my health conditions. I faced many rejections from the people for fitness. My doctors supported me and encouraged me. While slowly I started walking for two hours, in 2012, I ran my first marathon for 3 km without any practice from the fitness trainers. In all these years, I have been training on my own. Since last year, I started running with striders’ group. They have given me more confidence.’’Gulati’s younger brother was the kidney donor. ‘’I took one year to recover. The negative emotions of the people and the refusal by fitness trainers encouraged me to give my best and complete the 21-km run. The refusal of people inspired me to work hard on my fitness.’’Gulati, a resident of Bandra, has been constantly working on her health and fitness to participate in the marathon every year. According to her, she has dedicated four days a week for fitness and three days for yoga. She added, ‘’Any patient should start engaging themselves with any kind of sports activity which will keep them healthy. Through this platform, I am also encouraging people to donate organs. It will help to give life to the needy. I hope people take up the initiative to donate organs and make others aware of it.’’After Mumbai marathon, Gulati is planning to run for an international marathon to spread the message of organ donation.

Capital’s posh markets struggle to shake off sealing blues

The old couple that sells gajras in Khan Market daily after sunset look bored. Braving chilly winds, they hope for some late night patrons to buy their flowers. “Weekends are good for us as we make more money than usual,”the man says as his wife nods in agreement. But they know, like the fate that befell on the toniest market in the Capital four days ago, business is currently slow for them as well.A few kilometres away from Khan, as it is colloquially addressed, lies its less posh yet equally popular cousins, Defence Colony (Def Col) and Meherchand Market. Dotted with high end restaurants and designer stores, they mirror the same story — of downed shutters, sporadic shoppers and diners. After the New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) sealed establishments in these three markets over the past two weeks for building by-laws violation, these places have turned into a pale shadow of their past. Normally teeming with activity through the week with a steady stream of revelers out to shop, socialise or just soak in the energy, shops owners are now hoping that they can soon return with the same gusto.DNA visited Khan, Def Col and Meherchand on Friday as it inched towards the end of the week. Hoping to find a throbbing carousal of Delhiites out to unwind with drinks and food, DNA passed through the cobbled alleys of Khan that surprisingly had a lot of room for a Friday night to walk around without skirting on the sides. Equally bemusing was not being asked to wait for a table in any eatery, something that is not the scenario normally here on weekends as restaurants are packed to the brim.”There is less rush since the sealing happened four days ago. While restaurants are still operational and only some part of few of them has been closed, people are still keeping away because they assume eateries have been shut. Business has also been affected by about 10 to 15 per cent,” said the manager of an Italian joint who did not wish to be named.Moving to Def Col and Meherchand, parking is a breeze since there aren’t too many visitors. The mood is sombre and the markets look forlorn like a beloved awaiting the return of his sweetheart. No more beelines outside famous restaurants serving from Indian to Continental to French. Also missing are fashion enthusiasts that hop from one store to another in Meherchand to lay their hands on the latest sartorial options.Says Jagdish Gupta, secretary, Defence Colony Market Association, “It is painful to go through all this when we have followed all the necessary rules. We fear that as days pass by, and if there is no timely relief, we will be struggling to stay afloat with exorbitant rentals etc.”BIZ DOWN BY 15%The manager of an Italian eating joint at Khan Market said business has been affected by about 10 to 15 per cent Parking is now a breeze at the otherwise congested Defence Colony and Meherchand markets, while the mood is sombre

Bahubali 2 to be introduced as case study in IIMA

In a first, a case study on Bahubali 2 will be introduced in one of the electives at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. The students of Contemporary Film Industry – a business perspective, through the case study, will learn the power of sequel and how a sequel can derisk the movie as a marketing concept.IIMA was the first business school in Asia to introduce a comprehensive elective course on the movie industry and more than 700 students have opted for the course. The course gives a 360 degree view of the creative industry space with special focus on movie production.Confirming the same, professor Bharathan Kandaswamy said, “I will be introducing Bahubali 2 as a case study in the new academic year and it will essentially focus on the power of a sequel and how a sequel can derisk the movie as a marketing concept. There is a research from Stanford university which says that a prequel is always considered better than the sequel but a sequel makes more money than a prequel. Sequels make more money because the producers become more marketing savvy based on the success of a prequel. My course this time will focus on marketing mantras evolving around sequels and how decisions need to be taken that respect art and creativity of a movie and yet are able to make money. Blending art, business and technology is the key.”A comprehensive course on the Business of Television and Online Media has also been designed and will be offered from next academic year. This course has become very relevant and useful as Television and Digital video platforms are technologically converging. MBA students can add significant value by designing new business models and operational processes for these new businesses, he added.CFI course had invited several industry professionals such as Aamir Khan, Prahlad Kakkar, Madhavan, Dhanush, Shreya Saran, Mr Sudhanshu Vats and many others to share their insights and experience which gives students new lessons from a very different space. This time, Meenakshi Shedde, who is a National Award winning film critic, curator for Indian films and South Asia consultant to several leading Film Festivals, spoke to students at length about the role of film festivals.

The PM’s Principal Secretary said that he, while on way to office, stopped by at the CJI’s residence and left a greeting card at the gate. Some media reports said that the CJI declined to meet Misra obviously to avoid more controversy, a day after the four judges of the five-member Supreme Court collegium headed by him criticised him for his style of administration and over the allocation of cases.

Incredible India 2.0 sets sight on ‘polo tourism’

With the women polo players in Manipur earning a lot of critical acclaim in the last few years, the Centre is now keen on roping them in to help popularise ‘polo tourism’ — a sport which the ministry of tourism has been promoting as ‘heritage sport’ for a while.Speaking to DNA, tourism secretary Rashmi Saxena said that the sport, which has attracted foreign tourists for years, will also give them a new region to explore. Rajasthan and West Bengal are already hubs of the sport, with the 150-year-old Kolkata Polo Club being one of the oldest clubs in the world. Assam’s Silchar polo club was established in 1883.”The women polo players of Manipur have been coming up in a big way, earning accolades for the country. The state has been playing the sport for the longest time. We plan to involve them in the Incredible India 2.0 campaign,” said tourism secretary Rashmi Saxena. Women’s polo in the state got a huge boost in January 2016, when the United States Polo Association (USPA) team went to Manipur to play against the state’s women’s polo team. However, the area is not new to the sport and has been playing the sport traditionally for years where it is called ‘sagol-kangjei’. The move is also part of the ministry’s focus for the year, where it is looking at evolving destinations in the North-east. In a conversation with DNA, tourism minister KJ Alphons said that in the agenda for 2018, the North-east is top priority.”There will be a big focus on the North-east this year; we will develop infrastructure in terms of more hotels and flights, better roads etc.,” said the minister.Plans for polosTourism secretary Rashmi Saxena said that the sport, which has attracted foreign tourists for years, will give them a new region to explore. Dahanu Boat Mishap: How an ambulance meant to rescue turtles helped save lives

Wahurwagh then in his next two trip ferried 15 more students from the capsized boat to the hospital and by the time he returned a few ambulances and other vehicles too had reached and had begun helping. “I am glad that our ambulance came to the rescue of people and saving lives has to be the priority during such tragedies,” shared Dr Dinesh Vinherkar who is associated with WCAWA. Meanwhile Wahurwagh waited and also later along with other volunteers from WCAWA helped relatives and other family members reach the hospital who rushed to the beach after hearing about the incident. ”

It was around 10:30am that Pratik Wahurwagh a volunteer with NGO WCAWA that runs a turtle rescue centre on the Dahanu beach received a phone call from a friend alerting him about the incident.“I was at home at Agar located nearby and knew that our ambulance will be able to quickly navigate on the beach without getting stuck in the sand and will be of help. So I immediately phoned up founder of WCAWA and he asked me to rush to the spot with our ambulance and help as many as possible. When I reached I realised that I was the first and till that time no ambulance had arrived,” he said adding that soon after reaching the beach he first quickly ferried two female students whose condition was deteriorating to the Cottage hospital nearby. Also readMaharashtra | Boat carrying school children capsizes in Dahanu; 3 dead and 37 rescuedWahurwagh then in his next two trip ferried 15 more students from the capsized boat to the hospital and by the time he returned a few ambulances and other vehicles too had reached and had begun helping. “I am glad that our ambulance came to the rescue of people and saving lives has to be the priority during such tragedies,” shared Dr Dinesh Vinherkar who is associated with WCAWA. ED raids premises linked to Karti, P Chidambaram says officers left ’embarrassed’ and ‘apologetic’

The Congress and its leader P Chidambaram today accused the government of “unleashing vicious vendetta” against the opposition after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) carried out raids at the residence of the former Union minister here in connection with its money laundering probe in the Aircel-Maxis case.P Chidambaram accused the ED of misusing its power at the behest of the government. He said he would not succumb to pressure and continue to speak and write. He spoke to reporters outside his Jorbagh residence here, hours after the ED conducted searches at 10 premises linked to his son Karti Chidambaram in connection with the probe.P Chidambaram termed the raids “a comedy of errors” and claimed the officers were left “embarrassed” and “apologetic” as they could not find anything at his house. “Since they had the search warrant, I did not object to the search but I said I will record my protest that there is no FIR in respect of the scheduled crime…There are obviously no proceeds of crime and the ED has no jurisdiction under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA),” he told reporters. Also readP Chidambaram terms ED raids on son Karti’s houses as ‘comedy of errors’Later, in a statement, he said there is no predicate scheduled offence and hence the ED has no jurisdiction. “Yet the ED, at the behest of the government, continues to misuse its powers. Let the government misuse the ED. I shall neither bend nor break and I shall continue to speak and write,” P Chidambaram said. In a separate statement, AICC in-charge of media Randeep Singh Surjewala said the raids were part of a “continuing vicious vendetta unleashed by Modi government against Congress and other opposition leaders”.He alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government were using agencies including ED and CBI as “captive puppets” to settle political scores and intimidate political opponents. “In fact, ‘raid raj’ has become the ‘DNA’ of the Modi government. We again reiterate that Congress leaders will not be cowed down or bow in face of such malicious and wilful attempts to browbeat and bulldoze,” he said.

Chandigarh stalking case: Vikas Barala claims he is the ‘real victim’, Varnika Kundu calls it a ‘blatant lie’

A day after being granted bail in the sensational Chandigarh stalking case, Vikas Barala on Saturday claimed innocence and said all charges levelled against him are “baseless and false”.Vikas Barala, son of Haryana’s BJP chief Subhash Barala, also went on to say that he is the real ‘victim’ of the case in a video made by him.”You have all been hearing a lot about me in the last five months. First and foremost, I would like to tell you that I am completely innocent. All charges levelled against me are false and baseless. I am the real victim here,” Barala said in the video.”I was not once being asked of what I have to say or what the actual facts are. Many believed that I was guilty without listening to what I have to say,” Barala added. In the video, Barala said that since he was the son of a politician he was targeted to demean his father’s image. “My father is the state president of a political party and many parties are targeting me,” Barala said. “Political circumstances were so grave that my father could not meet me or my lawyer as people start accusing a father for only helping his son,” he added. He rubbished all the molestation and eve-teasing charges levelled against him and urged the public to only believe in “facts”.However, victim Varnika Kundu on Saturday called Barala’s YouTube video a “blatant lie” and “baseless”. “We have kept our complete faith in judicial system. And I am hoping that such a baseless video which is clearly a blatant lie will not affect the actual proceedings of law,” Kundu told ANI.Earlier on October 13, a Chandigarh court framed Vikas Barala on charges of stalking and attempting to kidnap the senior IAS officer’s daughter. The incident, which took place on August 4, hit the national headlines, when Kundu accused Vikas and his friend Ashish Kumar of following her car in the middle of the night in Chandigarh. The two men were then arrested on the basis of her complaint but were released on bail, as they were booked under bailable sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Motor Vehicles Act. However, they were arrested again on August 9 under sections 365 (Kidnapping or abducting with intent secretly and wrongfully to confine person) and 511 (attempt to commit punishable offence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

SC Bar Association terms SC judges press conference’ ‘ill planned’

Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) on Saturday termed the press conference of the four Supreme Court judges as “ill planned” and added that the allegations made by them were not substantial.”If they had to come for a press conference, then they should have said something substantial. Just creating doubts in the minds of people will not serve the interest of the judiciary. I think this was not properly planned,” SCBA president Vikas Singh told ANI.He further opined, “If at all they had anything substantial to say, they should have thought it over first rather than just suggesting something and leaving it to the minds of the people to keep guessing. All of the wild guesses will go all over the country and all kinds of things will be said about the Supreme Court.”In wake of the allegations made by the four senior judges against Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra, the SCBA will be holding a meeting on Saturday, and will later address the press as well.On Friday, in the press conference, Justices Madan B Lokur, Kurien Joseph, Ranjan Gogoi and Jasti Chelameswar questioned the conduct of the CJI, saying that their efforts have failed in convincing the latter to take steps to protect the institution. The ambiguous allegations by the judges had prompted media persons to ask if it related to the case of CBI Judge Loya’s death, to which Justice Gogoi replied in the affirmative, albeit hesitantly.Singh, however, said that Justice Loya wasn’t mentioned by either of them, “They haven’t said anything about Justice Loya either in the letter or the press conference. I don’t know how this justice Loya issue is coming up for discussion in this matter at all.”

You spent 3 years just talking,’ Shiv Sena mouthpiece Saamana slams Devendra Fadnavis govt

In yet another acerbic editorial, Shiv Sena has slammed the Devendra Fadnavis -led Maharashtra government through its mouthpiece ‘Saamana’. The editorial said, ‘Sarkarchi 3 varshe bolnyat geli ani urleli 2 varshe dolnyat jaatil (state government has spent 3 years of talking and would spent remaining 2 years without doing anything for the state).’The editorial published on Saturday has cited recent statements by three BJP leaders including former minister and veteran Eknath Khadse, minister for food and civil supplies Girish Bapat and minister for sanitation Babanrao Lonikar. It criticised chief minister Fadnavis and said he was making tall promises and announcements of projects like bullet trains but was failing to provide for basic needs of people.Saamana pointed out that Khadse who is staunch opponent of Fadnavis within BJP has recently told people ‘not to believe in this government and fulfill their needs on their own. There is no guarantee that this government would fulfill what it promised.’Saamana has also pointed out that Bapat who is also Guardian minister for Pune district has express doubts whether this government would come back to power in next assembly elections. Bapat while addressing a function in Pune last week had said ‘whatever you want demand just now since it is not sure whether who would come to power after next election.’Lonikar had said that neither Chief Minister Fadnavis nor Finance minister Sudhir Mungantiwar are sanctioning the funds for water supply schemes. Lonikar had told this to Shiv Sena MLA Harshawardhan Jadhav who is son-in-law of BJP state unit president Raosaheb Danve. Saamana has criticised that the statements by 3 BJP leaders are testimony of the fact that Fadnavis government is busy in making announcements rather than fulfilling those.

Projects worth Rs 45 cr under MUTP-3A

A massive Rs 44,668 crore worth of projects have been proposed to improve and expand Mumbai’s suburban rail corridor. This however does not include the Rs 19,500 crore Bandra-Virar elevated rail corridor which has been replaced by other multi-crore projects. DNA had reported about the possibility of such a move on January 12.At a meeting chaired at Sahyadri Guest House by Union Railway minister Piyush Goyal and Railway’s top bureaucrat Ashwani Lohani with those representing Western Railway, Central Railway and Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC), a new feature called Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP)-3A was added for implementing these projects. This will be an extension of MUTP-3 which has been sanctioned in the Railway Budget. The MUTP-3A will include expansion of existing rail lines, introducing new rail corridors, procuring 210 AC locals and arrangements for their parking, station redevelopment and improving signalling system using Communication Based Train Control (CBTC) which will reduce the gap between two services. According to sources, by the time these projects will be complete the overall project cost is expected to touch Rs 49,524 crore. The planning body of MRVC, which will implement MUTP-3A has given maximum priority to procuring 210 AC trains at a cost of Rs 16,380 crore. They will be setting up maintenance facilities for its AC rolling stock at a cost of Rs 2,050 crore. Apart from this the elevated fast corridor on Harbour line is expected to cost Rs 12,331 crore by the time the work is complete. The Indian Railways are also developing Mumbai Metropolitan Region with projects like new suburban rail corridor connecting the 60-km long Panvel-Virar, expanding rail lines with a third line on Kalyan-Asangaon and third and fourth lines on Kalyan-Badlapur route.Sources said that they are trying to get a sanction in this year’s General Budget though the Railway Board has asked to take time and study it further.MUTP-3AIt will include expansion of existing rail lines, introducing new rail corridors, procuring 210 AC locals, station redevelopment and improving signalling system using Communication Based Train Control (CBTC) which will reduce the gap between two services.

India to have 10,000 seaplanes in next 2 years, says Nitin Gadkari

Urging the state governments to adopt new modes of transport like waterways, Union minister Nitin Gadkari today announced that 10,000 seaplanes would be brought into operation in the country over the next two years. He also said that in the next three months, rules and regulations would be put in place for operating seaplanes in the country.”The state governments should take to new modes of transportation, including inland waterways to avoid pollution and related issues arising out of road transport,” the minister said.He was speaking at the ‘bhoomi pujan’ ceremony of the new bridge on Versova creek that will connect Mumbai to Ahmedabad. The project is worth Rs 3,000 crore.”Around 10,000 seaplanes would be brought into the country in the next two years. Within the next three months, rules and regulations would be put in place for (operating) seaplanes. Trials were recently taken in the sea in Mumbai. This will bring a new method of transport,” Gadkari said. The Road Transport, Highways and Shipping Minister said the Maharashtra government should focus on transportation through seaplanes, which will “ensure speed and avoid pollution”.”Waterways should be encouraged in the country. Now, you (Maharashtra government) should concentrate on developing waterways in Mumbai,” he said. The chief minister (Devendra Fadnavis) has assured me that by April this year, water transport would be introduced in and around Mumbai, Gadkari said.Stating that the use of petrol, diesel, ethanol and methanol should be brought down, the minister announced that the Delhi-Mumbai highway would be converted into an “electric route” and the task of preparing a detailed project report (DPR) has been given to the department concerned.”Electric vehicles will run on this highway and it will avoid pollution…Electric double decker buses would be introduced and an MoU has been signed in this regard with the Transport for London just yesterday,” the BJP leader said. The civic bodies should concentrate on electric transport, which will cut the cost of operations and also the fares…The other methods of transport like ropeway, cable car and funicular railway will be encouraged in the future,” the minister said.Stating that the city of Mumbai is growing exponentially, Gadkari said there was a need to introduce an integrated transport system for the metropolis.”The situation and problems faced by Delhi would soon be faced by Mumbai in terms of pollution and traffic. The MPs, MLAs and ministers should realise the hazards and act accordingly. They should bat for cost-effective and pollution-free public transport system and develop waterways transport to overcome the perennial problems,” he said.Gadkari also said that work on 378-km-long Mumbai-Vadodara Express Highway worth Rs 20,000 crore would start in the three months. “This Expressway will be even better than the Mumbai-Pune Express Highway,” he said.Container traffic problems will be eased if a logistics park comes up at Vasai-Virar, Gadkari said adding, “This will ease the container traffic at JNPT and avoid their movement by road.”Fadnavis assured that all the suggestions given by Gadkari would be brought into reality.

Cong defends Siddaramaiah’s ‘Hindutva terrorists’ remark, says he must have intel

The Congress today appeared to defend Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah after he called the BJP and the RSS “Hindutva extremists”, saying he wouldn’t have made the statement without police intelligence inputs.”He (Siddaramaiah) is the chief minister of a state…It is possible that the chief minister has inputs which we don’t have. In this situation, you will have to pose this question to the chief minister and seek clarification. Because he won’t speak anything of this kind if he has no intelligence input,” Congress spokesperson Tom Vadakkan told reporters here.He also hit back at BJP president Amit Shah for his remarks that the Karnataka government was “anti-Hindu”.Also readBJP says Siddaramaiah’s ‘hatred towards Hindus’ exposed after he dubs BJP-RSS people ‘Hindutva terrorists’Addressing a rally in Karnataka yesterday, Shah charged the state government with perpetrating atrocities against BJP and RSS workers, claiming 20 of them were killed in the state over the last three years.Siddaramaiah, while speaking to reporters yesterday in Chamarajanagara district, alleged that the BJP, RSS and the Bajrang Dal had terrorists in their organisations, a charge rubbished by the saffron party. Also readFarmer deaths v/s starvation: Siddaramaiah ‘welcomes’ Adityanath to Karnataka, UP CM hits backIt was not clear whether the chief minister made the comment in retaliation to Shah’s remark. I am also a Hindu, but I’m a Hindu with humanity, they are Hindus without humanity. That is the difference between me and… (them).”Referring to Shah’s jibe, Vadakkan also said the BJP chief made the comment with the sole intention of winning the upcoming assembly election in Karnataka.Hitting out at Shah, Vadakkan said it was “strange” that Shah called the state government as “anti-Hindu”.”Shah’s intention is to win. How he does that is his angle. It is strange to say that anti-Hindu. Only Amit Shah ji can do this,” he said, adding only people of the state can decide whose government will be formed (in the state). The BJP also dared Siddaramaiah to arrest its as well as RSS leaders.

Bengal BJP holds minority convention, accuses Mamata of not doing enough for them

It seems like both BJP and TMC are recalibrating their political positions ahead of all-important Panchayat polls in Bengal. Where TMC did a Brahmin conference, BJP organised a minority convention on Thursday to reach out to a large section of the electorate in Bengal. Senior BJP leaders including state BJP president Dilip Ghosh and Mukul Roy claimed that BJP was more secular than the TMC because Mamata Banerjee-led TMC was busy appeasing only one particular community.“While Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s slogan is ‘sabka saath sabka vikas’ Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been following the rule, ‘Muslim ka saath, TMC ka vikas’. This can’t continue. In 2019, TMC will get a major jolt and in 2021, the party will cease to exist here. At present she has realised that she has gone overboard with appeasement and had irked members of majority community. Thus she and her leaders are now busy doing damage control and putting up Brahmin sammelan,” Ghosh said, speaking at the rally. He also said that the Mamata government had pretended to be the well-wisher of Muslims here. “She had claimed that she has done a lot for Muslims. Muslims in West Bengal are in one of the worst condition compared to other states. They have been kept away from social, cultural, academic and economical development,” he said. Also readBengal: TMC organises Brahmin conference, BJP calls it damage control measure Addressing the gathering which comprised mostly Muslims, Mukul started off his speech with an ‘Salamalaikum’, the Muslim way of greeting a person and ended his speech saying ‘In Sha Allah’, a trademark style of Mamata while addressing gathering of Muslims. He said that there has been no development for the minority section during the TMC regime and that Mamata has used them to ascend to power in Bengal. “All the development had been theoretical. There has been nothing in reality. And that too had been so much talked about that it has led to a clash between the Hindus and Muslims,” he said. He also added that ahead of 2011 when the TMC came to power, Mamata had toured the state with the mother of computer graphics teacher Rizwanur Rahman telling people ‘Mujhe insaaf chahiye’ (I want justice) for the alleged murder of Rahman and two senior IPS offices were among the accused. “What happened after that? Later those IPS officers were made commissioners of two commissionerates. Again, She had been quiet on the ‘instant triple talaq’ issue because she is unable to assess which group she would be displeasing if she opposed or supported the SC decision in the triple talaq issue,” Roy said.
