Kerala boasts a stunning 590km coastline, dotted with picturesque beaches, but one stands out – the distinctive crescent-shaped Muzhappilangad. Located in the northern district of Kannur, roughly equidistant from the beach towns of Kannur and Thalassery, this unique beach offers an unparalleled experience. While Muzhappilangad caters to diverse interests, its claim to fame is the drive-in beach, attracting mostly driving enthusiasts every year.

Renowned as one of the ‘six best beaches for driving in the world’, here are some key facts about this exceptional destination.

*Spanning up to 100 meters in width, Muzhappilangad Beach is recognised as one of the world’s top six drive-in beaches, attracting a large number of visitors. This 4km stretch of pristine sand invites visitors to drive along the shore, taking in the breathtaking views of the Malabar Coast.

*As you cruise along, you can indulge in authentic Malabar delicacies from numerous shacks lining the beach. The presence of black rocks ensures a safe swimming experience, shielding the beach from strong currents. This picturesque beach, meticulously maintained and clean, offers the perfect setting to unwind and soak in the serene atmosphere.

*For adventure enthusiasts, the beach offers a range of activities, including paragliding, parasailing, microlight flights, water sports, power boating, and leisurely catamaran rides, making it an ideal destination for both relaxation and thrill-seeking. Nearby Dharmadam Beach will also be developed, allowing tourists to walk to Dharmadam Island during low tide.

*The beach’s firm sand allows vehicles to drive along the shore, providing a sensation similar to driving on tarmac. Muzhappilangad Beach accommodates multiple vehicles driving along the shore simultaneously.

*During the monsoon season, the beach is closed to vehicles for approximately three months, allowing the Kerala government to enhance facilities for the upcoming tourist season. A comprehensive four-phase development project, worth Rs 233.7 crore, is underway to further enhance the beach’s attractions.

*The first phase, with a budget of Rs 75 crore, is nearing completion, with a 1.5km stretch reserved for driving, accompanied by jogging and cycling tracks. An 18m-wide promenade, stretching 1.6km, features kiosks, gazebos, and seating areas.

*The beach welcomes around 17 lakh tourists annually, with approximately 6,000 cars and 3,000 bikes using the beach each month, contributing significantly to Kannur district’s tourism.

*To improve facilities, a five-star hotel with 40 rooms is being constructed on 3.9 acres, expected to be completed next year.

*The southern part of the beach will be transformed into a water sports destination, featuring beachfront restaurants, water sports activities, changing rooms and shower areas.

*Future developments include entertainment facilities like a giant wheel, musical fountain, and boat restaurants on Dharmadam Beach. Jogging and cycling tracks, an observatory, and a pedestrian bridge connecting Muzhappilangad and Dharmadam beaches will also be introduced.
