A Delhi court on Wednesday (December 18) granted interim bail to activist Umar Khalid.

Khalid is accused in cases related to 2020 Delhi Riots and has been mostly in jail since his arrest in 2020.

The court granted Khalid seven-day bail from December 28 to January 3 to attend the marriage functions of his cousin, according to ANI.

Khalid was initially accused of two cases related to Delhi Riots of February 2020. In the case related to communal violence in Delhi’s Khajuri Khas area, Khalid was discharged in 2020. However, he remained in jail as he remained an accused in the case of the larger conspiracy to cause riots in Delhi.

In the larger conspiracy case, Khalid has been charged with the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

The Delhi Riots took place after months of movement against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC). More than 50 people were killed in the worst rioting in Delhi in decades.
