Nine people, including eight District Reserve Guard (DRG) jawans and a driver, were killed in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district, when Maoists used an improvised explosive device (IED) to blast their vehicle on Monday.
The explosion took place on the Bedre-Kutru Road in the district. The security personnel were on their way back from an operation when the incident occurred.
“Nine individuals, eight Dantewada DRG jawans and one driver, were killed when their vehicle was detonated by an IED blast carried out by Naxals in Bijapur. They were returning from a joint operation involving Dantewada, Narayanpur, and Bijapur”, said Bastar Inspector General (IG) Sundarraj P.
Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed his sorrow over the loss of security personnel, describing the incident as “extremely painful.”
“My heartfelt condolences go out to the families of the martyrs. I pray for peace for the departed souls and strength for the grieving families,” he stated.
He further said, “The Naxalites, frustrated by the ongoing efforts to eliminate Naxalism in Bastar, are resorting to such cowardly actions. The sacrifices of these soldiers will not be in vain, and our fight against Naxalism will continue resolutely.”
The incident occurred a day after five Naxalites were killed in an encounter with security forces in Bastar, Chattisgarh. The gunfight started on the evening of January 4 in a forest in south Abujhmaad, near the border of Narayanpur and Dantewada districts, when a combined team of security forces was conducting an anti-Naxalite operation.
