Leaders of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on Friday unanimously elected Narendra Modi as the leader of the NDA Parliamentary Party.

Later in the day, the NDA staked claim to form the government, and, after President Droupadi Murmu satisfied herself that the alliance had enough numbers, she appointed Modi as the Prime Minister-designate of India.

In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the NDA has come to power for the third time with 292 seats.

While Modi went to the Rashtrapati Bhavan to meet Murmu in the evening, the NDA leaders went into a huddle with the top leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at party chief JP Nadda’s residence in Delhi. Top BJP leaders Nadda, Rajnath Singh, and Amit Shah were holding one-on-one deliberations with the leaders of the alliance.

Meanwhile, the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha is likely to begin around June 15.

The first session will commence in the third week of June with the oath-taking by the newly elected candidates as members of the House, the sources said, adding the oath-taking is likely to continue for two days, following which a new Speaker will be elected.

The next day, the president will address a joint sitting of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, thus formally inaugurating the session, the sources added.

The final call on the dates of the session will be taken by the new Union Cabinet. During the session, Prime Minister Modi will also introduce members of his Council of Ministers to both the Houses.

The session is likely to conclude on June 22.
