Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday thanked people of India for giving the NDA a majority for the third consecutive time and requested them that they may “now remove ‘Modi Ka Parivar (Modi’s family)” from their social media properties.
‘Derived a lot a strength’
In a message of X, PM Modi said: “Through the election campaign, people across India added ‘Modi Ka Parivar’ to their social media as a mark of affection towards me. I derived a lot of strength from it.”
“The people of India have given the NDA a majority for the third consecutive time, a record of sorts, and have given us the mandate to keep working for the betterment of our nation,” the Prime Minister further said.
‘Message of us being one family effectively conveyed’
The Prime Minister went on to say that with the message of all of us being one family having been effectively conveyed, “I would once again thank the people of India and request that you may now remove ‘Modi Ka Parivar’ from your social media properties.”
‘Display name may change, but bond won’t’
“The display name may change, but our bond as one Parivar striving for India’s progress remains strong and unbroken,” the Prime Minister said.
How ‘Modi Ka Parivar’ campaign started
It all began on March 4 this year when several leaders of Modi-led BJP took to X and added ‘Modi Ka Parivar’ in their social media handle usernames.
It came a part of solidarity with PM Modi after RJD leader and former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad Yadav’s “no family” remark.
At a rally of Congress led INDIA bloc, Lalu Yadav, on March 3, had made the remark about PM Modi having no family.
“Ye Modi kya hai? Modi koi cheez hai? Narendra Modi parivarvaad par bolta hai aur kitne netaon ka kitna santaan hai ginta hai…hum kya karein agar tumhare paas parivar nahi hai (What is Modi? Modi speaks on dynastic politics and keeps counting how many leaders have their children in politics. What can we do if he does not have a family of his own?),” Lalu Yadav had.
Day after Lalu’s comment, PM Modi asserted at a public rally in Telangana’s Adilabad that the “140 crore people of this country are my family. Mera Bharat mera parivar (My India is my family).”
The PM’s statement had then set off a massive ‘Modi Ka Parivar’ campaign.
BJP’s show of solidarity for PM Modi in the run-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections was reminiscent of a similar campaign launched by the party prior to the 2019 general elections with the ‘Main Bhi Chowkidar’ (‘I too am a watchman’) addition to their names to take on Congress’ “Chowkidar Chor Hai” dig at the prime minister.
In 2014, the BJP had organised “chai pe charcha” (debates over a cup of tea), events, in response to when Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar had raised the subject of Modi’s origins as a tea seller.
