The INDIA bloc has won eight of 13 Assembly seats in the bypoll elections, giving the ruling BJP-led NDA a tough fight.
Making her poll debut, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu’s wife Kamlesh Thakur won the Dehra seat as the Congress’ candidate. The grand old party’s candidate from Himachal’s Nalgarh, Hardeep Singh Bawa, has also won the by-election.
Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party’s Mohinder Bhagat emerged victorious from Punjab’s Jalandhar West Assembly seat.
The Trinamool Congress has won three of four seats from West Bengal – Raiganj, Ranaghat Dakshin and Bagda – while the party is leading from the fourth seat of Maniktala.
The Bharatiya Janata Party has won two seats, one in Himachal and the other in Madhya Pradesh.
Counting in three seats is currently underway.
On his win from Uttarakhand’s Badrinath seat, Lakhapat Singh Butola said, “I want to thank the people of Badrinath…The credit for this goes to all those who directly and indirectly supported me in this fight for justice.”
Talking about BJP’s win in Madhya Pradesh, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said, “I am happy that last time we won the Lok Sabha in Chhindwara and this time we have also won the by-election. This shows the relationship between the BJP and the public. I want to congratulate the people of Madhya Pradesh on this victory of Amarwada.”
On winning the Raiganj Assembly seat, TMC candidate Krishna Kalyani said, “I am a resident of Raiganj and I want to thank all those who voted to keep development in mind. People have turned away from BJP ever since PM Narendra Modi tried to poison the minds of people by politicising the Sandeshkhali issue. AITC has got a clear mandate of the people.”
