An Indian passenger bus carrying 40 people veered off the road and plunged into the Marsyangdi River in Nepal’s Tanahun district on Friday, claiming the lives of 27 passengers.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Santosh Paudel of the Traffic Police Office in Tanahun told the Kathmandu Post that 27 out of 43 passengers aboard the bus died, while 16 others were injured.
According to police, all those onboard the bus were Indian nationals, the Kathmandu Post reported, adding that a total of 15 people are undergoing treatment at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital and one at the Kalanki-based Sahid Memorial Hospital.
“The bus bearing number plate UP FT 7623 plunged into the river and is lying on the bank of the river,” DSP Deepkumar Raya from the District Police Office Tanahun confirmed to ANI over the phone. The Marsyangdi River is located in the Tanahun district of Nepal.
Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh Relief Commissioner also gave an update on the situation. “Regarding the Nepal incident, we are establishing contact to find out if any person from Uttar Pradesh was on the bus,” the relief body said in a statement.
This is not the first time Nepal witnessed a bus tragedy. In July this year, 65 people on board two buses were swept into a swollen river Trishuli in Nepal.
The incident occurred amid heavy rainfall and involved two buses: the Angel bus, heading to Kathmandu and the Ganpati Deluxe travelling from Kathmandu to Gaur in Rautahat.
This is a developing story.
