Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday met 101-year-old retired Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer Mangal Sain Handa during his visit to Kuwait. The meeting was made possible after Handa’s granddaughter, Shreya Juneja, requested the Prime Minister through a heartfelt social media post.
Shreya Juneja wrote, “Humble request to Hon’ble PM @narendramodi to meet my 101-year-old Nanaji, ex-IFS officer, in Kuwait during tomorrow’s interaction with the Indian Diaspora.” To her delight, Mr. Modi responded positively, tweeting, “Absolutely! I look forward to meeting @MangalSainHanda Ji in Kuwait today.”
Handa, who served in countries like Iraq, Kuwait, China, Argentina, the UK, and Cambodia during his illustrious career, was overjoyed by the meeting. His son, Dilip Handa, described it as an “experience of a lifetime,” expressing gratitude to the Prime Minister for the special gesture.
PM Modi is currently on a two-day visit to Kuwait, his first since becoming Prime Minister. This is also the first visit by an Indian premier to the Gulf nation in 43 years; former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi visited Kuwait in 1981. His visit underscores the importance of strengthening India-Kuwait ties, especially given the presence of approximately one million Indians in Kuwait, the largest expatriate community in the country.
During the visit, PM Modi interacted with the Indian diaspora and discussed ways to bolster multifaceted ties between the two nations. Invited by the Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the visit marks a significant step in enhancing bilateral relations.
