One Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan was killed in Manipur’s Jiribam district on Sunday morning in a gun attack by suspected militants at Mongbung village, news agency PTI reported.

In the attack, a policeman also sustained injuries and has been admitted to a hospital, police said.

The attack took place as the state’s northeastern security situation is still dire as a result of the ongoing ethnic unrest that began in May 2023, more than a year ago.

The 20th Battalion CRPF and state police team was ambushed by armed miscreants, resulting in the death of a CRPF jawan, as reported by India Today.

According to the source, there was a shooting incident on Saturday, therefore the security team was going to the Monbung village to conduct a search and rescue mission.

The 43-year-old Bihar resident Ajay Kumar Jha has been identified as the deceased jawan.

“He suffered bullet injuries in the head and was declared brought-dead in hospital. The injured policeman is undergoing treatment, but he is out of danger,” PTI quoted a police officer as saying.

According to him, gunshots were also reportedly heard in the village on Saturday night

According to a second police official, more security personnel from nearby hill regions have been deployed in the village in the wake of the attack.
