Referring to Rahul Gandhi’s often used words “daro mat” to target the BJP-led Centre for using probe agencies to terrorise political rivals, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday that it was now his turn to say ‘daro mat, bhago mat’ to the Congress scion who has run away from Amethi fearing loss to BJP candidate Smriti Irani.

In an early morning decision on Friday, the Congress decided to field Congress leader Rahul Gandhi from Rae Bareli, the seat vacated by his mother Sonia Gandhi. In 2019, Smriti Irani recorded a stunning victory against Rahul from Amethi, a constituency that had always been loyal to the Nehru-Gandhi family. The Congress has, meanwhile, named Rahul Gandhi loyalist Kishori Lal Sharma from Amethi.

Addressing a rally in West Bengal’s Bardhaman-Durgapur, PM Modi said, “He (Rahul Gandhi) is so scared of Amethi that he is running towards Rae Bareli. They ask everyone ‘daro mat’. Today, I also ask them, ‘daro mat, bhago mat’….”

The Prime Minister said that he had declared in Parliament that Shehzada (Rahul) was going to lose in Wayanad.

“I had said that as soon as the polling was completed in Wayanad, he would start looking for another seat…,” said PM Modi.

Referring to Sonia Gandhi, he said he had also declared that the Congress’ biggest leader will not dare to fight elections and she will run away.

“She ran away to Rajasthan and came to the Rajya Sabha…,” he added.

Attacking the Trinamool Congress, he said the Mamata Banerjee-led party was busy in appeasement as it tried to shield Sandeshkhali culprit Shahjahan Sheikh.

“I want to ask TMC, in Sandeshkhali our Dalit sisters were served huge injustice. The whole country was demanding action. The TMC saw shielding the culprit. Was the reason that the name of the culprit was Shahjahan Sheikh?… The TMC is busy in appeasement. Can a vote bank be above humanity?…,” he asked.

The constituencies of Maldaha Uttar, Maldaha Dakshin, Jangipur, and Murshidabad will go to polls on 7 May, marking the third phase of elections in the state.

The second phase of elections in West Bengal witnessed peaceful voting, with a turnout of over 76 per cent. In Phase-1, the voter turnout stood at 77.57 per cent.
