Almost a month after his death a viscera test report on Tuesday revealed that gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari was not ‘murdered’ as no trace of poison was found in his system.

Ansari’s brother Afzal Ansari, on behalf of his family, cried foul over Ansari’s death on March 28 claiming that the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader was poisoned in prison custody, a claim that was backed by several politicians including former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi and Bahujan Samaj Party Chief Mayawati.

Post-mortem report finds death due to natural causes

The recently published viscera report proves the point of a post-mortem report that said that Ansari died of natural causes.

While his family alleged that the gangster-turned-politician died of “slow poisoning” in jail, the post-mortem report said, “The cause of death of Mukhtar Ansari was found to be heart attack (myocardial infarction).”

The autopsy was conducted in the presence of Mukhtar Ansari’s youngest son Umar Ansari at the Rani Durgavati Medical College.

Who was Mukhtar Ansari?

Ansari, 63, was a five-time MLA from Mau Sadar seat and was behind bars in UP and Punjab since 2005. He had over 60 criminal cases pending against him. He was sentenced in eight cases since September 2022 by different courts in Uttar Pradesh and was lodged in the Banda jail.

His name was on the list of 66 gangsters issued by Uttar Pradesh Police last year.

Prohibitory orders under section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), which bars large gatherings, were imposed across the state following Ansari’s death, Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police Prashant Kumar said.

Ansari, who hailed from Mau, was believed to have a strong influence in the adjoining Ghazipur and Varanasi districts as well. The social media cell of the Uttar Pradesh Police has also been activated to keep a close watch on unlawful elements online, he said.
