Economist and author Bibek Debroy has died at the age of 69.
Debroy was serving as the Chairperson of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister at the time of his death.
In posts on X (formerly Twitter), Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled Debroy’s death and called him a “towering scholar”.
In addition of being an economist, Debroy was a renowned author who wrote a number of books and translations, particularly on Indian history and mythology.
“Dr. Bibek Debroy Ji was a towering scholar, well-versed in diverse domains like economics, history, culture, politics, spirituality and more. Through his works, he left an indelible mark on India’s intellectual landscape. Beyond his contributions to public policy, he enjoyed working on our ancient texts, making them accessible to the youth,” said Modi on X.
Modi further said that he “will fondly remember his insights and passion for academic discourse.”
