Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has been granted bail by a Bengaluru court in a defamation case filed against him by BJP’s Karnataka unit for issuing “defamatory” advertisements in mainstream newspapers against the previous government in the state led by the BJP, ahead of the 2023 Karnataka Assembly elections.

What was Rahul Gandhi accused of?

The Karnataka BJP has accused Gandhi of defaming the party by launching a “PayCM” campaign in which Congress released a “rate card” of bribes required to pay for various government jobs ahead of the Karnataka polls in May 2023.

The Congress scion reshared on X the post made by his party in the run-up to the state polls in Karnataka.

According to a report by PTI, the Congress advertisement accused the then Basavaraj Bommai-led BJP government in Karnataka of indulging in large-scale corruption during its 2019-2023 rule.

Who filed the defamation case against Rahul Gandhi?

The defamation case against the Congress state unit, its president DK Shivakumar, former Opposition leader and current CM Siddaramaiah, and Rahul Gandhi was filed by BJP MLC and General Secretary Keshav Prasad.

On June 1, the people’s court in Karnataka granted bail to Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar.

Gandhi had skipped the hearing on June 1. The judge had then fixed June 7 for the personal appearance of the Congress leader.
