The junior doctors, protesting in Kolkata demanding justice for rape and murder of 31-year-old woman doctor at RG Kar Hospital on August 9, have accepted the fresh invitation of the West Bengal government for a meeting at the state secretariat – Nabanna – on Thursday at 5 pm.

West Bengal govt’s pre-condition for meeting protesting doctors

The state government has accepted doctors’ pre-condition for the presence of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at the meeting, but has rejected a live telecast of the talks.

Also, the delegation’s strength should not be more than 15 people as against the pre-condition of junior doctors of 30 members.

The fresh letter, inviting junior doctors for the meeting was issued by West Bengal chief secretary Manoj Pant.

In the letter, Pant urged the protesting junior doctors to attend the meeting with CM Banerjee at 5 pm.

“The meeting shall not be Live telecast. However, the same can be recorded to maintain transparency. This will serve the purpose intended from your end, while also maintaining the sanctity of the proceedings, ensuring that all discussions are accurately documented,” the letter by the Chief Secretary stated.

For nearly 48 hours, junior doctors have been on a sit-in before Swasthya Bhavan, the State Health Department headquarters in Kolkata’s Salt Lake, demanding that the Kolkata Police Commissioner and senior health officials be removed from their posts.

Their agitation, which has paralysed healthcare services at state-run hospitals, is now in its 34th day.
