Major fire breaks out in Jodhpur plastic warehouse

A major fire broke out in a plastic warehouse in a three-storey building in Fatehsagar on early Monday morning. Although no loss of life was reported, the fire was so massive that it took more than 10 hours for 20 fire tenders to extinguish it.With the help of the municipal corporation, army and air force fire-fighters reached the spot and sprayed water and foam from the rooftops of the surrounding houses. The narrow lanes made the task difficult for fire tenders to reach the spot. A part of the building also collapsed due to fire.Plastic crockery and other material worth millions of rupees stored in 40 rooms of building were reduced to ashes.Occupants of the building and some of the adjoining houses were evacuated. About 50 rooms were built in the three-storey building, Govind Mali, the distributor of plastic goods across the city and division of Jodhpur, said. The illegal warehouse in a congested residential areas has once again put a question mark over the functioning of the municipal corporation and district administration. For the last several years, residents had making complaints about inflammable material stored in the areas but the corporation did not take any action due to the warehouse owner’s influence. There are hundreds of houses in the city where business activities are being run without permission but there is no one to take action against them. Jaipur Discom power cuts, booster use add to Jaipur’s water woes

The rampant use of booster pumps and the failure on the part of PHED to crackdown on it has put the law-abiding residents in a bind during swelter summer months. In the summer months, when the water need goes up, the power cuts by Jaipur Discom during morning and evening water supply time have further aggravated their problems.Although the power cuts during is of 30-45 minutes, its timing render many residents without water.A few weeks ago during a weekly review meeting with the district collector, PHED officials had proposed that the power cut of duration 30-45 minutes must be enforced depending on the time of water supply.Use of booster pumps by many consumers was also discussed as its use lowers the water pressure due to which many consumers get little or no water. The angry consumers direct their ire against PHED for not being able to supply sufficient water.Although PHED has started drive to check the use of boosters in many colonies, not much has been achieved and use of boosters has become rampant during the summer months.

Congress leader thrown out of Jaipur Municipal Corporation meeting

A high voltage three-hour drama was witnessed between the BJP and Congress at the Jaipur Municipal Corporation on Monday. On the one hand, BJP councillors were targeting civic body’s officials, while on the other, the issue of Congress sending its deputy leader of opposition saw heated exchanges between the two.The reason for the fracas during the meeting of the Executive Committee (EC) was instead of leader of the opposition, the Congress sent Deputy leader of the opposition Dharm Singh Singhania in the meeting which was taking place after 17 months.Mayor Ashok Lahoti and JMC Commissioner asked Singhania to leave the meeting, but he kept sitting there. On this, the mayor, councillors and officer came out of the meeting hall and the jawans of vigilance cell came and took Singhania forcibly out. As Singhania was dragged out he kept shouting at the jawans and sat on the front of the mayor’s car to protest against his decision.A meeting of the EC held after 17 months did not include any proposals relating to employees. This meeting was called to target the civic body’s authorities. During the meeting, BJP councilors targeted JMC Commissioner Ravi Jain along with other officers for various lapses.“The Congress party has given me charge of LoP, the Municipal Corporation included my name in the list of committee members. I was informed of the meeting by phone and now the Mayor dictatorially forced me out of the meeting,” Singhania said.On the other hand, during the EC meeting, Maan Pandit demanded action while raising the issue of dharna by the employees. The mayor directed the commissioner to investigate and take action in this regard. Maan Pandit accused the Additional Commissioner of corruption in closing e-tendering. During this, the two had heated exchanges and finally the committee decided to resume the e-tendering system.

Policy for reusing waste water: Gujarat government

In a bid to make the most of available water resources, the state government on Monday announced a policy for reusing treated waste water, making it mandatory for thermal power plants and large industrial units to use treated wastewater. The government is also targeting to reuse 100% of treated waste water by 2030.The Policy, unveiled by Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, aims to achieve minimum 80% coverage and collection of sewage in all municipal towns and to reach a level of 100% treatment of collected sewage. “We aim to reuse at least 24% of the total freshwater consumption from treated wastewater by every municipal body. We are targeting to reuse 70% of the treated wastewater by 2025, and 100% by 2030,” JP Gupta, principal secretary, water supply department, said while announcing the policy.Speaking after launching the policy, Rupani said that water was a basic problem in Gujarat, but the government was committed to resolving the problem. He cited the ongoing water conservation drive, plans to set up desalination plants along state’s coast, and the latest policy as measures to find a permanent solution for water shortage.”Gujarat consumes about 3,000 million litre per day of water. Even if only 50% of the water is recycled and reused, we can save a large quantity of water,” he said while asking industrial units to stop using groundwater.Gupta said that it would be made mandatory for all thermal power plants, GIDC estates, all industrial units in Special Investment Regions, industrial parks, and large industrial units consuming over one lakh litre of fresh water per day, situated within a distance of 50 km from a sewage treatment plant (STP) or city limits to use the treated wastewater. Among others, the policy envisages the use of treated wastewater on construction sites, watering green areas, in fire hydrants, among others. Other uses proposed are in maintenance of parks and gardens and developing urban landscaping, and for rejuvenation of ponds, lakes and rivers. The state government has chalked out plans to set up underground drainage collection network and sewage treatment plants across the state. At present, 52 STPs exist in the state, which treats about 2,600 MLD water. Officials said that 161 STPs are under planning or execution, which would increase water treatment capacity by 2,800 MLD in two years. A senior government official said that about Rs500-600 crore would be spent this year to set up STPs. Gupta said that treated wastewater would be priced lower than fresh water, which would not only reduce consumption of fresh water but also be financially beneficial for consumers.”The aim is to ensure that the operation becomes sustainable for local bodies that will own the STPs,” said a senior government official.

Rahul Gandhi likely to tour Rajasthan in July

Congress president Rahul Gandhi is likely to tour Rajasthan in the first week of July, said RPCC president Sachin Pilot, adding that campaign committees for the upcoming assembly election will soon be constituted on the lines of Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh model.Pilot reviewed Mera Booth-Mera Gaurav (MBMG), a mass contact programme, along with senior leaders at PCC headquarters on Monday. Man with Nipah virus symptoms kept under observation in Goa hospital

The state-run Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) has kept under observation a 20-year-old Kerala resident who was found having symptoms of the Nipah virus.State health minister Vishwajit Rane said the man was under observation at GMCH, located near here in North Goa district, and it was not yet confirmed if he was infected with the deadly virus. The blood samples of the patient were sent for testing to the National Institute of Virology in Pune, Rane said, adding that there was no need to panic. The patient’s identity was not disclosed by GMCH.”The patient was travelling alone on a train from Kerala but took ill when he reached Thivim railway station in Goa this morning,” Dr Utkarsh Betodkar, Chief Surveillance Officer, Directorate of Health Services told reporters. He said that the patient was initially referred to the district hospital in Mapusa town from where he was admitted to GMCH.”The patient is not quarantined. He has been kept in isolation as a precautionary measure,” he said.He said that there was no need to panic as it was not a confirmed case of Nipah. He also ruled out the need to notify authorities about the patient’s co-passengers.Dr Betodkar said that the results of the blood samples, which have been sent to Kerala, would be available by tomorrow evening. He added that the future course of action regarding the patient would be decided once the blood sample report arrives.”No advisory has been issued by the State government about the virus,” he said. The Goa government has formed a committee, headed by the state’s Health Secretary, to draw a protocol to deal with Nipah virus cases, if any, in the state. The virus has so far claimed 13 lives in Kerala. The outbreak of the Nipah virus infection, a newly emerging zoonosis that causes severe disease in both animals and humans, is suspected to be from an unused well at Perambra in Kerala’s Kozhikode district which was infested with bats. The natural host of the virus is believed to be fruit bats of the Pteropodidae family, Pteropus genus. So far there is no vaccine against the virus which was first identified in 1998 in Kampung Sungai Nipah, Malaysia.

Who ordered police firing on Sterlite protesters? FIRs reveal startling truth

After maintaining a stoic silence over the question of who ordered the police firing on anti-Sterlite protestors that led to the killing of 13 people, the First Information Reports filed in Thoothukudi North and SIPCOT police stations revealed that two “deputy tahsildars” level officers ordered the firing at the Collectorate and Threspuram on May 22. Of the 13 people killed in the firing, 11 were killed in the firing at the Collectorate and its surroundings and one woman at Threspuram on last Tuesday while one man was killed at Anna Nagar on May 23. Sekar, Special Deputy Tahsildar (Election) of Thoothukudi, in his complaint, said that he ordered the police to fire at the protestors to save lives and properties at the Collectorate. He said that more than 10,000 people were marching towards the collector’s office with deadly weapons and police tried to disperse them by using tear gas and lathicharge. He named groups including Makkal Adhikaram and Naam Tamilar Katchi for instigating the people to protest on May 22. He said that they entered the Collectorate raising slogans to torch the office along with the employees for not closing down the Sterlite plant. Despite all the warnings, he said that the protestors indulged in the violence and the police, after the several warnings, fired in the air first and then at protestors to save the lives of government workers at the collectorate. He further alleged that when the injured in the firing was taken out in the ambulance, the protestors attacked the vehicles and beaten up the driver too. The police had to resort to firing again near the arch at the entrance of the collectorate to secure the injured, the FIR said, adding that as the protestor entered the Sterlite workers quarters adjacent to the collector’s office and set the building on fire, the police without no other option opened fire again. For the firing at Threspuram, M Kannan, Zonal Deputy Tahsildar, Thoothukudi, in his complaint, said 500 people including 100 women gathered with deadly weapons and petrol bombs attacked the police to enter the police quarters on Threspuram Main Road. As the protestors continued to attack even after the firing of tear gas and rubber bullets, he said that he ordered Thoothukudi North police inspector to open fire. “Protestors did not disperse even after the police fired at the air thrice. When the police fired at the protestors, one woman was injured and she was rushed to the government hospital where she was declared brought dead,” he said. CPI (M) state secretary K Balakrishnan wondered why did deputy Tahsildar level officer has to order the firing when the Collector and other higher officials are there. He said that the FIR filed based on the deputy Tahsildars complaints raises several questions including whether they have the power to order fire.

Cross border shelling: J&K govt to build 5,500 bunkers, 200 community halls along LoC

Authorities in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir have initiated the process of constructing over 5,500 underground bunkers and 200 community halls as well as ‘border bhawans’ to help border dwellers facing the brunt of Pakistani shelling and firing. The prestigious project, targeted to be completed in the current financial year at a cost of Rs 153.60 crore, has already been approved by the state government and union ministry of home affairs (MHA), an official spokesman said today. He said District Development Commissioner Shahid Iqbal Choudhary chaired a meeting and reviewed arrangements for initiating construction of family bunkers, community bunkers, community halls and border bhawans to facilitate safety of border residents during ceasefire violations.A total of 5,196 bunkers are being constructed in seven blocks along the 120 km long stretch of LoC. These include Sunderbani, Qila Drahal, Nowshera, Doongi, Rajouri, Panjgrain and Manajakote, the spokesman said. He said over 260 community bunkers and 160 community halls would also be constructed in villages located in 0-3 KM distance from LoC for accommodation of people during ceasefire violation prompted migration or emergency evacuation. The border bhawans to accommodate more than 10,000 people will be constructed in safer areas of Sunderbani, Nowshera, Doongi, Rajouri and Manjakote, the spokesman said.He said the tendering process designed for construction of bunkers as block level projects as per MHA guidelines would start within one week and process will be completed within one month which will be followed by construction of bunkers, shelters and community halls.Every family residing in 0-3 KM range from LoC would be provided an individual family bunker during Phase-I of the project while community bunkers and halls will be strictly constructed near schools, hospitals, police stations, police posts, government buildings and panchayat ghars for safe accommodation and better utilisation during peace time, the spokesman said.He said ‘tehsildars’ (revenue officials) have been directed to hand over land to executing agencies indicating area and Khasra number as well as entry in revenue records while tenders would be put in public domain within one week. Joint teams of Revenue, Rural Development Department, Police and Public Works Department would conduct inspection, physical verification and monitoring with active cooperation from border guarding forces, he said. The spokesman said all assets will be geo-tagged and monitored online at district and state level. In December last year, the Centre announced construction of 14,460 individual and community bunkers at a cost of Rs 415.73 crore for people living along the LoC and IB in Jammu region as a step to ensure their safety in the wake of frequent cross-border shelling.

PM Modi to inaugurate Eastern Peripheral Expressway, address mega rally in Baghpat today

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will today inaugurate the Eastern Peripheral Expressway (EPE), India’s first smart and green highway built at a cost of Rs 11,000 crore. Modi will also travel in an open jeep on a 6-km stretch of Delhi-Meerut Expressway, which is still under construction and is scheduled to be finished my March 2019. After his 6-km roadshow, starting from the Nizamuddin Bridge, the Prime Minister will fly to Baghpat for dedicating the EPE to the nation.”The Prime Minister will travel in an open jeep on Delhi Meerut Expressway for 6 km, where he will be greeted by a huge number of people. The Prime Minister would inaugurate the exhibition and 3D model there and would fly to Baghpat to dedicate to the nation the EPE,” Road Transport, Highways and Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari said.Modi will also hold a mega rally in Khekra in Baghpat where he is scheduled to address a large crowd, just a day before the bypoll in neighbouring Kairana Lok Sabha constituency. The Supreme Court on May 10 had directed the NHAI to throw open the Eastern Peripheral Expressway for the public by May 31, asking why were they “waiting” for its inauguration by the Prime Minister. The apex court had said if the 135-km expressway, which envisages signal-free connectivity between Ghaziabad, Faridabad, Gautam Budh Nagar (Greater Noida) and Palwal, is not inaugurated on or before May 31, it should be thrown open forpublic who were facing traffic congestion in Delhi. The Eastern and the Western Peripheral Expressways were planned in 2006 following the apex court’s order to build a ring road outside the national capital for channelling the traffic not bound for Delhi. The 135-km EPE, built at a cost of Rs 11,000 crore, has several unique features and is India’s first highway to be lit by solar power besides provisions of rain water harvesting on every 500 metres on both sides and would showcase 36 national monuments and 40 fountains, the minister said, adding it has been completed in a record 500 days. The foundation stone of the greenfield project was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 5, 2015.Gadkari said 2.5 lakh trees have been planted including transplant of 8-10 year old trees and drip irrigation provision has been done.(With PTI inputs)

The teachers, in turn, got their students to spread the same knowledge in organised field trips to the zoo.”It is just a proposal now which has only been verbally communicated. We are yet to finalise the proposal in writing. Once the new academic year begins, we would like to conduct a meeting of all the NSS coordinators in order to explain the idea to them. It will be a good idea to have the NSS students in the zoo. The students will stand near the enclosure and provide information about birds and animals to visitors. The University has also liked the idea,” said a zoo official.BS Bidawe, NSS Program Coordinator, University of Mumbai, said, “This is a very good initiative. We would like our students to explore the world and learn new things through such activities. We have our support and are waiting for the colleges to start so that this idea can be implemented soon.”

Central Park-themed garden gets consultant

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is close to appointing Tata Consulting Engineering Ltd to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for a park to be developed on 300 acres of land, which will be reclaimed off Cuffe Parade. The garden is said to have been conceived on the lines of New York City’s famous Central Park.A senior official from the garden department said the firm’s appointment is in the final stage and needs only the standing committee’s nod.The BMC has proposed the park, off GD Somani Marg in Cuffe Parade, in Development Plan (DP) 2034. According to a civic official, the park will include a garden, playground and a play-area for children.”It will include a jetty and waterway among other features,” said the official.Planned in 1970, it is believed that the recreational park will be biggest in the city. “It will be a green lung in South Mumbai, and is much needed in the area,” said the civic official. The consultant will prepare the DPR in the six months following the appointment. “The report will flesh out details like amenities and green cover,” said the official. In December, the BMC’s standing committee had sanctioned Rs 147.5 lakh to the National Institute of Oceanography (NIOC) and National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) to conduct a six-month impact assessment study on the project. The two agencies will also look at ways to rehabilitate the fishing community, which has been opposing the project.IMPACT STUDYNIOC and NEERI will assess the impact of the project on SoBo’s geography and environment, and the livelihood of the fishing community in the area, a civic official said.

Slothful realty market is a broker’s boon

The slowdown in real estate market is spelling good times for brokers. In most cases today, brokerage has been hiked to 3 per cent and in many cases, brokers are being offered as high as 4 per cent.Around five years ago, brokers hiked theie fees from 1 per cent to 2 per cent with the developers’ consent. Now, most brokers claim they are paid up to 3 per cent and in special cases, up to 5 per cent.Vikram Mehta, a leading broker, said developers know that brokers can sell their project so they are in demand. “In most cases builders are offering us brokerage of up to 3 per cent and in some cases, more than that.”Incidentally, they are not referred to as brokers any more. In a meeting of brokers from across India around seven years ago, they decided they should be called realtors. But now, the nomenclature is ‘channel partners’.Prakkash G Rohiira of Karma Realtors said, “When it is a purchase from the developer, all brokerage close to 3 to 4 per cent is paid by the developer. However, even in retail segment we are seeing that brokerage has gone up.”

From kala dhan to jan dhan in 4 years: PM Narendra Modi

Led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the BJP showcased the success of four years of governance and attacked the Congress, setting the tone for a high-pitched campaign for the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. While party president Amit Shah ruled out any challenge for the party in the upcoming polls, saying their return to power is a certainty, the Prime Minister led the charge against the Opposition, saying the nation is moving away from kala dhan (black money) to jan dhan (public wealth).Speaking at a public gathering in Cuttack, Odisha, Modi referred to Indian Army’s surgical strike across the Line of Control (LoC) to destroy terror camps in 2016 as an example that his government is willing to take tough decisions and is not confused. He asserted that BJP’s position of power in 20 states shows that people have endorsed his government’s performance in the past four years.Modi also emphasized that his government has been tough on corruption, and had raided over 3,000 places over the last four years.Meanwhile, Shah listed out the government’s successes and mocked Rahul Gandhi-led Congress, saying the BJP-led government has ended dynastic politics and replaced it with development.Shah said Gandhi may declare himself a prime ministerial candidate but he is struggling to get support from his own party members, let alone other opposition leaders. He hit out at the Opposition’s ‘Modi Hatao’ (Remove Modi) chorus, calling it a new low in politics. “This is something new I am seeing and the Opposition seems to have decided to continue with this tactic till the 2019 polls,” he said at a press conference. “Its one-point agenda is ‘Modi hatao’ while, BJP and Modi want to remove disorder, corruption, and poverty to usher in stability and development.”BJP allies joined in the celebrations, with Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar congratulating Prime Minister Modi and expressing confidence that his government would live up to the expectations of the people of the country.Congress, Samajwadi Party (SP), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Left and Telugu Desam Party came together to lash out at the BJP government. “The BJP government has remained in office for four years, and there is no other achievement. It is full of failures. All we got is rhetoric in these years,” said D Raja of the Communist Party of India.BSP leader Mayawati and former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav also pointed out the failures of the government, highlighting the suffering of the poor, the Dalit community and women.SP and BSP – the two rival parties in Uttar Pradesh – united earlier this year to defeat BJP in by-elections in the state. Shah downplayed this BSP-SP alliance and said his party is working to get 50 per cent vote share in the state in the 2019 polls. He said the by-polls of Gorakhpur and Phulpur cannot be compared to the general election.

Nipah virus: No need to panic in Goa, says govt

In the wake of Nipah virus claiming 10 lives in Kerala, the Goa government on Tuesday said there was nothing to worry about in the state, but measures were still being taken to prevent its possible spread.”As of now there is no alert issued for Goa by any agency, including the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), whose team is in Kerala assessing the ground-level situation,” Dr Utkarsh Betodkar, State Surveillance Officer of Directorate of Health Services, told PTI.He said there was no need to panic as ithas not affected the entire state of Kerala, but only a specific area of Kozhikode. The Nipah virus has so far claimed 10 lives in Kozhikode and Malappuram districts in north Kerala, while the condition of two persons undergoing treatment for the viral disease is said to be critical, the Kerala government has confirmed.According to Betodkar, the Goa government was not taking any chances and has already contacted Manipal Centre for Virus Research (MCVR) to assess the situation.Responding to a question, the officer said there was no need to screen the tourists arriving from Kerala.”Screening of the tourists or visitors can happen only when there are specific guidelines issued by the Centre. Right now, there are no such guidelines,” he said.Fruit-eating bats are the primary host of the Nipah Virus, which can cause disease in both animals and humans. So far, there is no vaccine against the virus, which was first identified in 1998 in Kampung Sungai Nipah, Malaysia.

Let’s ‘pray for India’ ahead of 2019 polls: Delhi Archbishop’s letter sparks massive row

The Delhi Archbishop’s ‘pray for nation’ letter has sparked a massive controversy. On Monday, the Archbishop had had released a circular to churches and other Christian institutions across the city, asking the Christian community to hold prayers and observe a fast on Fridays for the nation’s sake. In his letter, Anil Couto, the Archbishop, said that, ‘We are witnessing a turbulent political atmosphere which poses a threat to the democratic principles enshrined in our Constitution and the secular fabric of our nation…As we look forward towards 2019, when we will have new government, let us begin a prayer campaign for our country from May 13, 2018 which marks the anniversary of the apparition of the Blessed Mother at Fatima, consecrating ourselves and our nation to the Immaculate Heart.’Many see the circular as a direct attack on the Modi government. Reacting to the letter, Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said that, ‘PM is working towards inclusive growth without discriminating while breaking barriers of religion and castes. We can only ask them to think with progressive mindset.’BJP’s Shaina NC also criticised the Archbishop’s circular, saying, ‘Wrong to try and instigate castes or communities. You can tell them to vote for the right candidate or party but to suggest to vote for one party and not another and term yourself as secular is unfortunate.’The RSS also slammed the circular. Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh ideologue Rakesh Sinha termed the move as a ‘direct attack on Indian secularism and democracy’.‘This is a direct attack by the Church on Indian secularism and democracy, and this is a direct intervention by the Vatican as these Bishops are appointed by the Pope. Their accountability is not to India but to Pope,’ Sinha was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

Maharashtra: Drones, vehicle scanners deployed to curb liquor smuggling

The state excise department is taking its fight against liquor smuggling and illegally distilled liquor to the next level by deploying technology. Soon we will see drones, vehicle scanners and boats scouting water bodies.”We have received proposals (for deployment of drones) from some district superintendents. These are being examined,” state excise commissioner Dr Ashwini Joshi told DNA. Apart from coastal areas like Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Palghar, Sindhudurg and Ratnagiri, boats will be given to units in districts like Dhule, Nandurbar and Jalgaon, which have wide riverine systems.Excise check posts will get non-intrusive vehicle scanners on lines of airports and the process for seeking quotations is underway, Joshi added.A senior state excise official said in a meeting with state excise minister Chandrashekhar Bavankule, they had also sought that the department is given the authority to access call data records (CDRs) of those accused in liquor-related cases instead of depending on the police.”Drones and boats will ensure that we can scan and reach spots in riverine areas, creeks and pockets with dense mangroves that are used to distil hooch. These areas are otherwise not accessible by road,” he said, adding that these measures would improve enforcement and increase the departments revenues. An official noted that drones and boats could be used in areas like Thane and Raigad near Mumbai where creeks were used to brew hooch. “Many a time, our staff finds it difficult to get boats on hire to reach these spots for action as the boat owners fear retribution by bootleggers. It has been our long-standing demand to purchase boats for the department though issues like their berthing and maintenance must be sorted out,” he explained. The drones could be used for aerial surveys of inaccessible areas enabling the department to act on specific inputs about illegalities. In 2017-18, the state excise department achieved a collection of Rs 13,448 crore compared to the Rs 12,500 crore target. In the last (2017-18) fiscal year, sales of country liquor fell 4.02% to end at 3,126.09 lakh bulk litres (BL) compared to 3,256.99 BL in 2016-17. Consumption of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) and beer also dipped by 6.81% and 15.05% to end at 1,792.56 lakh BL and 2,759.68 lakh BL versus 1,923.56 lakh BL and 3,248.43 lakh BL. Wine sales were 62.50 lakh BL, a fall of 3.28% compared to 64.62 lakh BL in the previous year.Maharashtra follows a policy of discouraging liquor consumption through high prices and low sales and has one of the highest excise duty regimes in India. With this and neighbouring state of Gujarat under prohibition, it has also become a transit point for transporting liquor from states like Haryana and Madhya Pradesh to the dry state.

Ahmedabad airport sees a surplus of over 100% in five years

With an increase of 72% revenue, Sardar Vallabhabhai Patel International airport has recorded an increase of over 100% in surplus in a span of five years. As per numbers shared by airport officials, in 2013-14, the revenue was Rs 217.92 crores which shot up to Rs 375.67 crores in 2017-18. As far as surplus is concerned, the difference was of nearly 62 crores increase in a span of five years. The airport officials credit a massive increase in passenger movements and aviation traffic from Gujarat. The city airport, for many years, was at the receiving end of criticism over basic facilities like toilets as well as the quality of seats. In 2016, the Ahmedabad chapter of Air Passengers Association of India (APAI) had taken up the issue of drafting their concerns to the then airport director. The members had then said, “A number of issues will continue to plague Ahmedabad airport due to privatisation of some of the airports. Passengers are becoming increasingly discerning. They are enjoying all the facilities and benefits that they are getting at the private airports. It is only reasonable for air passengers to expect the same level of facilities at leading airports like Ahmedabad.”However, the city airport has undergone massive changes — in terms of decreased number of bird hits, major development plan being undertaken, etc — over last one year. Manoj Gangal, Airport director, SVPI said, “There has been an increase in aircraft movement as well as an increase in non-aero revenue from stores at airport, car parking, advertisement rights, etc. Revenue will shoot up again in the current financial year with upcoming food court, lounge facility, a number of restaurants at terminal 1 and terminal 2. By the end of this year, we will have 19 more aircraft parking stands which would enable us to provide a number of flights and diverse connectivity.”Recently, the airport was also awarded by the Airports Council International in the category of most improved airports by region. A frequent traveller Paresh Shah said, “Queues have vanished from the departure terminal but the cab issue has still not being solved. If they pay some attention to cabs, it will help passengers. Also, there is a need for a good business lounge.”Changes at city airport in last yearNew flight information display system Self check-in counters Additional gates Doubling up seating capacity

Jaipur: SMS School to be under child rights panel lens

The activities of SMS school will now be under the lens of Rajasthan State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (RSCPCR). The commission has formed a committee which will monitor the activities going on in the school. In an order issued by the commission, it has been stated that a monitoring committee, due to the irregularities in the school, has been formed. The decision was taken after a meeting commission had on Monday. The members of the commission SP Singh, Seema Joshi and Jayshree Garg will be the members of this panel. The committee will keep a watch on the activities for 3 months and will also take the support of the department of education and child welfare committee.Interestingly, the school has already closed for summer vacations. In Jaipur, normally the schools are closed for about one and a half month to two months and only office staff comes to the schools. In this way, it means that for a major part of the tenure of the committee, school students will not be coming to school.About 6 days back, a team comprising chairperson Manan Chaturvedi, member secretary V Sarwana Kumar and others had visited the school. It was being speculated that day itself that a committee will be formed soon based on the findings of the members who had been to the school. The commission had stepped into the controversy going on in school after several students approached the commission complaining about various issues of the school, including complaints regarding corporal punishment.Another issue…Another issue which the panel felt was related to making of the school management committee which is to be formed under the provisions of RTE. The members were of the view that provisions were being flouted as the committee was not formed properly.

Madhya Pradesh: One killed, one critical after gaurakshak mob attack over alleged cattle slaughter

A man was allegedly beaten to death by a mob in Satna’s Amgar village on suspicion of cattle slaughtering. In the incident that took place on Thursday, a mob attacked two men accusing them of cattle slaughtering. Riaz (45) died on the spot while his friend Shakeel (33) has been admitted to a hospital for treatment.Satna Superintendent of Police Rajesh Hingankar said so far, four accused have been arrested and a case has been registered against them under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. According to NDTV, the four accused have been identified as Pawan Singh Gond, Vijay Singh Gond, Phool Singh Gond and Narayan Singh Gond. The police have also found a slaughtered bull and meat of two other bulls packed in sacks at the crime spot. Security has been tightened in the area as Home Minister Rajnath Singh is on a two-day visit to the state; Satna is one of his stops. The police have also filed a case against Shakeel – who is in coma in a hospital in Jabalpur – for cow slaughter. The families of Shakeel and Riaz have denied cow slaughter charges, say reports. In Madhya Pradesh, cow slaughter attracts a seven-year prison term and a fine of Rs. 5,000 if charges are proven. The state amended its laws in 2012, after it was found that the bovine population was rapidly increasing. In September 2017, the Supreme Court had asked the centre whether it had the responsibility under the Constitution to protect people and also to ask states to crack down on cow vigilantism. The Supreme Court, apart from asking the government to file a response, also suggested a set of tough measures to curb the increasing instances of cow vigilantism. With ANI Inputs

67% calls to elderly helpline about Gujarat govt social security schemes, says analysis

Gujarat government’s move to provide health check-ups to senior citizens in their houses could not have come at a better time than this. Analysis of call data made to HelpAge, an NGO that works with the elderly in the city, found that a majority of calls were about social security schemes of the government.Of the total 779 calls the helpline received in the last three months, a whopping 67% was from elderly wanted to know about the government’s social security schemes. The second highest number of calls (11%) sought medical assistance for destitute. Interestingly, calls seeking help for abuse requiring police intervention was only 1% and those in which the elderly complained of property disputes was 7%.Those who have worked with the elderly say the figures can be misleading as far as abuse of elders is concerned. It’s rampant and not many reports and even less do so on the phone. Most of the calls come from the elderly who want to know about the social security schemes, the pension schemes available to them et cetera. The second highest number of calls asking for medical help. The number of calls about abuse and such is low not because elderly abuse is on the decline, but because most of the elderly would not complain of abuse on the phone. For them there is always the risk of their children overhearing them, said Anil Massey, joint director and state head of HelpAge India. In fact, if Massey is to be believed, the highest number of complaints are about abuse if one were to consider walk-ins.”Most of the time, when an elderly person comes to us it is a complain about abuse. It is about children, forcing them to sign off their properties, or not taking care of them or such,” said MasseyDimple Shah, trustee of Jeevan Sandhya an old age home admits that many of the queries that come their way often is related to elderly complaining of abuse and neglect.”We also get queries about social security schemes and mostly it is because people even if they are educated are ignorant of the various benefits available to them under government schemes,” said Shah. Due to lack of space, the old age home ends up refusing at least one elderly person in a day, she said. “Almost 70% of the time it is because the youngsters don’t take care of the elderly. Otherwise, the elderly also refuse to accommodate and insist on having their way which leads to conflicts,” said Shah.SEEKING HELPSecond highest number of calls (11%) sought medical assistance for destitute. Land for social, religious bodies at 50% rate: Gujarat government

Gujarat government is going to grant land for social, religious, health or educational institutions with a generous approach. The government is changing the policy to grant land to such institutions and the land will be available at around 50% rates of market rates to such institution, sources said. Any trust working for the ‘causes’ can apply to the land and government will give the same at discounted rates.A senior official in the government said, “We have a policy for land grants to trusts which run hospitals, educational or social institutions but that needs changes as per the present demand and situation. The market rates for the land in the state has also increased in many folds so that the government is thinking to incentivise the scheme furthermore.”The state government gives land to such institutions at a token annual rent of Re 1 and does not collect revenue on such land from the beneficiary institution. The state government, however, stopped giving government had put the break on granting land to such institutions for many years and several organisations only were granted land in special cases after cabinet’s approval.“This happened because of irregularities by many of the private trust as they either changed the purpose of the land be granted to them or did not run the activities related to the social cause. The government, however, is mulling to give them land at concessional rates in place of granting them on annual rent system,” said the sources in government. The evaluation of land also will be done by the district committee meant for the purpose and the government will charge the beneficiary institution accordingly.Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel said, “The policy is under the consideration of the government and the social, educational and medical institutions will get the land at concessional rates but the procedure is underway and the same will be announced soon.”A senior official in the government said, “The government already has the policy but it was put on back burner as the rush was seen from the organisations to get government land. The government is adopting generous approach for such organisations now as the Lok Sabha polls are falling next year and such organisation could help the ruling party at the best in polls.”

Karnataka: Congress suffered because of Siddaramaiah’s arrogant behaviour, says outgoing Speaker KB Koliwad

In politics, much can change in matter of days. Siddaramaiah, who helmed Congress campaign in Karnataka, where even Rahul Gandhi took back seat is now facing fire from his colleagues. Congress suffered heavy losses in Karnataka as17 cabinet ministers suffered defeat. Siddaramaiah too lost from one of the two seats he was contesting. After reports that Siddaramaiah turned emotional during the meeting of newly elected Congress MLAs, party leaders are now publicly speaking out against him. After senior Congress leaders blamed Siddaramaiah for party’s defeat in Karnataka assembly polls, outgoing Assembly Speaker KB Koliwad has accused him of high-handedness. he 69-year-old leader received flak from several senior party MLAs, who held him responsible for the Congress’ performance, citing his complete authority in the selection of candidates and the Lingayat issue, they said. “He thinks he is the boss of the party, the party has suffered because of his arrogant behaviour. He is not a true Congressman,” said Koliwad. It is to be moted that Siddaramaiah migrated from JD(S) to Congress few years back. Koliwad also said that many people have this view of him but they don’t express it.Earler, at a meeting of the party’s new legislators, Siddaramaiah turned ’emotional’. He is also said to have cited “polarisation” as one of the factors that affected the party’s prospects in the May 12 election. In the May 12 polls, BJP emerged as the single largest party with 104 members, while Congress secured 78, the JD(S) 37 and others three.Alleging that BJP was trying to poach Congress MLAs, Reddy said “they had done it in the past, they are trying to do it again, but they will not succeed… we are all together and will stay together.” “BJP has contacted five or six of our MLAs. They raised their hands when asked during the meeting today,” he added. Siddaramaiah also mounted a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi alleging that he was encouraging “horsetrading” to ensure the BJP returned to power in the state despite falling short of a majority.Toiling hard to control the levers of power in Karnataka, the BJP and JD(S)-Congress combine staked claim to form the government amid bribery charges by the newly formed alliance’s leader H D Kumaraswamy against the BJP that it offered his MLAs Rs 100 crore to break ranks and back the saffron party. The allegations were promptly dismissed by the BJP, with Union minister Prakash Javadekar dubbing them as “imaginary”.

Karnataka Elections 2018: Confusion over BJP forming govt as state BJP deletes tweet; Javadekar shows victory sign

In ten minutes of confusion, reports that the BS Yeddyurappa-led BJP would be forming the next Karnataka government sent shockwaves as the saffron party has only bagged 104 seats in the recently concluded Assembly elections. The Karnataka unit of the BJP even confirmed the news on Twitter, but deleted the tweet minutes after putting it up.Earlier reports that Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala had invited the BJP leader BS Yeddyurappa to form the government and prove his majority ahead of the JD(S)-Congress combine. Yeddyurappa will take oath on Thursday at 9.30 am did the rounds. However, there was still no official confirmation from either the Governor’s office or from Yeddyurappa’s office. Union ministers Prakash Javadekar and JP Nadda reached Yeddyurappa’s residence. Javadekar showed the victory sign but declined to reveal whether Yeddyurappa has been invited to take a oath. ”Let me meet Yeddyurappa and let you know later,” he said. Also readFor divine interference: Yeddy, Devegowda and Siddaramaiah’s sons reach out to same tantrik priestBJP is the single largest party in the Karnataka Assembly with 104 MLAs while the JDS-Congress post poll alliance has 117 MLAs in a House that requires 113 seats for majority. Panchayat poll violence: Centre says first report ‘sketchy’, asks Bengal govt to send another

The Centre today termed as “sketchy” details on the panchayat polls violence and asked the West Bengal government to send another report, an official said. The second communication was sent two days after a similar one following large-scale violence during the elections to the local bodies in the state on Monday. Over a dozen lives were lost in the violence. The Union home ministry has asked the West Bengal government to provide a detailed report on the violence during the polls as the report the state government had sent was “sketchy”, the official said. The state government has been told to provide details on the circumstances leading to the violence and the steps taken to restore peace and punish those involved, the official said. Despite massive security arrangements, widespread violence marred the panchayat polls. Clashes between the supporters of the ruling Trinamool Congress and the opposition parties occurred in many parts of the state including North and South 24 Parganas, Nadia, Murshidabad and South Dinajpur districts. More than 60,000 security personnel from West Bengal and neighbouring states were deployed for the panchayat polls. Also readWest Bengal panchayat polls: Re-polling underway in 568 booths Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday hit out at the Trinamool Congress government in West Bengal over violence during the panchayat elections in the state, saying democracy was “murdered” for narrow political interests.Addressing BJP workers at the party headquaters here following the Karnataka verdict, he said the people should think seriously about the violence in West Bengal yesterday. “The way democracy was murdered… from (filing of) nominations to polling, democracy had no place,” he said.Modi claimed that efforts were made to ensure that “opposition candidates are unable to file their nominations so that ruling party members are elected unopposed”. “Ballot boxes were found in a pond… innocent party workers, not only of the BJP but of other parties too, were killed,” he said. Modi told the gathering that once the people of Bengal led the nation, but blood was spilled yesterday to further political interests. “I don’t talk of who wins or loses, but democracy was wounded… All parties, the civil society and the judiciary will have to play an active role… My concern is democracy, and I am not here to blame any political party,” he said.

Karnataka results: Siddaramaiah gets emotional at Congress MLAs’ meet after leaders blame him for defeat

Outgoing Chief Minister Siddaramaiah turned “emotional” at a meeting of the party’s new legislators today while speaking on Congress’ defeat in the assembly polls even as senior leaders blamed him for the result, party sources said. The 69-year-old leader received flak from several senior party MLAs, who held him responsible for the Congress’ performance, citing his complete authority in selection of candidates and the Lingayat issue, they said. Meanwhile, Home Minister in the outgoing government Ramalinga Reddy said most of the MLAs were present at the meeting today except “three or four ” who were on their way, but all were in touch”. Claiming that 117 MLAs were on their side, he said “despite this if the Governor does not invite us, we will decide how to go further…we may also parade our strength.” Party sources aware of the developments said Siddaramaiah “kind of got emotional” as he spoke during the legislature party meeting of the Congress’ loss despite his government’s “good developmental works”.Siddaramaiah is also said to have cited “polarisation” as one of the factors that affected the party’s prospects in the May 12 election. The sources said 73 legislators, including one independent MLA, were present at the meet. Six MLAs who were absent were in touch with party leaders over phone, they said. A joint legislature party meeting of Congress and JD(S) MLAs is scheduled at a hotel here later today, following which Congress leaders are likely to be shifted to a resort on the outskirts of the city, the sources said, adding that JD(S)was expected to make a similar move. Also readKarnataka results decoded: How BJP won 26 more seats than Congress despite getting 1.8% less votes In the May 12 polls, BJP emerged as the single largest party with 104 members, while Congress secured 78, the JD(S) 37 and others three. Gujarat: Breathable masks to help traffic cops battle dust, pollution

In a joint effort, the ATIRA and the NID have created a protective mask for the traffic police. The three-layered mask made of nanofibers will protect the cops against bacteria, virus, dust and even particulate matter.Over 5,000 masks were donated to the traffic department by Arvind Mills also costs less than the N95 and K N95 masks available in the market. “The masks cost between Rs 20 and Rs 50 as compared to the Rs 100 to Rs 300 for other masks. Moreover, one can easily breathe by wearing it,” said CR Prayag, officiating director, ATIRA.Prayag said once the masks are tried, they will take feedback from the cops. He said the masks will also be soon available commercially. AK Singh, the police commissioner said though the department will make use of 5,000 masks initially, the plan of distributing them is to be worked out.”We can also give the institute some feedback to make some changes. Once it’s over, we can also look at officially inducting them in the force, making them a regular feature of the traffic cops,” said Singh. He also called upon the institutes to help design uniforms made of special fabric that can take on the heat of Ahmedabad. He also pointed out the need for ergonomically made helmets for traffic constables. “The over 1,000 new recruits to the traffic department will be putting their health at risk by serving at heavily polluted traffic junctions over the next 5 to 7 years and the mask will help reduce the risk,” said Singh.Speaking about the traffic sensibilities of Amdavadis, the top cop observed that there was a need to bring in change and it would come with fear. “The Ame Amdavadi (a reference to Amdavadis lack of traffic sense) culture has reached such levels that we have reconciled to the fact and in some cases have started enjoying it too,” said Singh. He joked about how Ahmedabad as a city suffered from collective colour blindness given its inability to follow traffic signals.”With 130 cameras and a new recruits, in the coming days, we will ensure rigorous enforcement of traffic rules until it becomes a habit,” said Singh.

Heat wave: Primary schools may shift to mornings hours in Gujarat

The Gujarat government is mulling to change the timings of it’s primary schools to morning. The decision on this has not been finalised yet, but the process is in the final stage. The government will make it mandatory for all the primary schools to run in the mornings in place of afternoon. This will be applicable to all the schools, including government and private primary schools. Those schools which run in different shifts in the same building due to unavailability of rooms, however, may get the exemption. As per the new timings, the schools will be operating at 8:00 in the morning to 12 noon or 1 pm. Sources in the education department said,”This decision was taken because the children feel more energetic in the morning time and can get the time to play in the evening. Whereas they get engaged in homework or tuition class in evening, if they go to school in the afternoon shift. The department observed that the concentration of children also remain good in morning.””We are going to announce this decision after some consultation within the department. The schools which are short of rooms and run in two shifts will be excluded and that will be in the case of government schools too. Otherwise, all the schools will have to shift the timings of primary schools accordingly,” added the sources close to the development. The state government will ask all the government schools to make transportation available to students coming from distant places so that they can reach timely. The school principal will have to compulsorily arrange vehicles for the ferry of the students. The government is also considering to extend the summer vacation for a week or more due to the heat in weather.HEAT CARD AND THE SCHOOLGenerally the schools open in the second week of June but we are thinking that the summer vacation should be extended for the week because of heat. If the temperature remains 40 degrees or above, we will ask the schools not to start the new academic year.

Nirmala Sitharaman stresses on indigenisation of defence manufacturing

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman today said manufacturing of defence equipment cannot be done with borrowed technology and indigenisation has to be on top of the agenda for India, which is one of the largest importers of arms in the world.”India being the largest procurer of defence equipment, the emphasis on indigenisation has to be reiterated. This is exactly what has happened from 2014,” she said, referring to the government’s Make in India initiative. “Manufacturing of defence equipment by keeping indigenisation as its top consideration has to be on top of the agenda. Manufacturing cannot be done with borrowed technology. We really got to have the drive for innovation,” Sitharaman said, addressing Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) scientists at an event here.S Christopher, Chairman of the DRDO, said the organisation has now got an engine for Ghatak, an unmanned combat air vehicle, and is working to have DRDO sensors and weapons on the warships that are exported. This month also marks the 20th anniversary of the 1998 Pokhran nuclear tests. Lauding the DRDO scientists for conducting the Pokhran tests successfully, Sitharaman said they were carried out under “global watch” and restricted conditions, yet the world did not get a hint about the tests.”There was a sense of commitment when we achieved it in such a quiet fashion,” she said. Following the Pokhran tests, the West, led by the US, had imposed sanctions on India. Several DRDO scientists were also awarded on the occasion. Niti Aayog member and former scientific advisor to defence minister V K Saraswat was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Aurangabad Violence: Video shows cops walking with mob, probe ordered

A purported video of some police personnel walking with rioters during violence in Maharashtra’s Aurangabad district has surfaced, prompting the state police to order an inquiry into it.The video, purportedly showing policeman walking with the mob that was setting vehicles and property ablaze in the Aurangabad city on Friday night, has gone viral on social media.”We have asked people (who have the video recording) to deposit the footage to the police. We will check its authenticity and appropriate action will be taken if we find their (policemen’s) involvement,” state Additional Director General (Law and Order) Bipin Bihari told PTI.The official did not divulge further details, saying as of now it would be premature to comment on the video.”We will examine each and every video pertaining to this case and action will be taken accordingly. As of now there is peace in the city and our probe in the case is going on,” he said. The process of registering cases was underway and arrests were being made, he said.Bihari also said that a senior police official, who was seriously injured in the violence, has been shifted to Mumbai by air ambulance for further treatment. Two persons – a 65-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy – were killed in clashes between groups of two communities over illegal water connections in Aurangabad on Friday. The situation in the riot-hit city in the Marathwada region, about 350 km from Mumbai, was later brought under control, but certain restrictions were imposed, like the suspension of internet services and the enforcement of prohibitory orders under the CrPC section 144, banning assembly of people, the police said. The clashes between groups of two communities started in Moti Karanja area around 10 pm on May 11 and spread to Gandhi Nagar, Raja Bazaar, Shah Ganj and Sarafa localities, a police official had earlier said. The police fired in the air and lobbed teargas shells to control the situation, he said.More than 60 people, including police personnel, were also injured in the violence, he said. The elderly man who was killed in the clashes was trapped in his house when an adjoining shop was set on fire by rioters, the official said.Around 100 shops were set on fire and more than 40 vehicles destroyed, he said.Petrol bombs and kerosene-soaked balls made of rags were found during a search operation, the official said.More than a dozen people were taken into custody for interrogation, he said.According to sources in Aurangabad, tension was brewing in Moti Karanja area for the last few days as the municipal corporation was carrying out a drive against illegal water connections. It got a communal colour when an illegal water connection at a place of worship in the area was removed, the sources added.

Kathua rape-murder case: BJP leader Lal Singh cries conspiracy against people of Jammu

Senior BJP leader Lal Singh said today that there was a “conspiracy” to defame the people of Jammu over the gruesome rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl in Kathua, and reiterated the demand for a CBI probe into it.Singh, who resigned from the Jammu and Kashmir council of ministers after courting controversy by attending a rally in support of the accused in the case, questioned the state government and “Kashmir-centric people” about their objection to a CBI probe.”I want to ask those against CBI probe whether they think CBI is a Pakistan agency,” he said.”Shame on those who dubbed Dogras of Jammu as pro-rapists. They will be exposed. The perception created by national media and some Kashmir-centric people that Dogras are pro-rapists was a conspiracy against Jammu and its Dogras to defame and weaken them,” Singh told reporters here.Singh, who has organised over 30 rallies in Kathua, Samba, Jammu, Udhampur, and Reasi district since he resigned as minister last month, said, “We will force the government to conduct a CBI probe. CBI probe will restore the respect of Dogras and provide justice to the victim girl.” “We want CBI probe and will not stop till CBI probe is ordered,” he said. The BJP leader said that the Dogras would take out a ‘Swabhiman Rally’ on May 20 in the Hiranagar belt of the district “to restore respect and dignity of Dogras”.The girl, belonging to a nomadic community, was abducted, gang-raped and murdered in January this year. The case triggered a nationwide outrage.

Kathua rape-murder case: Supreme Court to hear witnesses plea alleging police harassment on May 16

The Supreme Court will hear the plea of three witnesses in the Kathua gangrape and murder case, alleging that they are being harassed by the state police, on May 16.A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud today agreed to hear on Wednesday the plea of Sahil Sharma and two others, who are college friends of the juvenile accused in the case.According to their plea, they had already recorded their statements before the police and the magistrate. The three witnesses had in their statement before the magistrate said they gave their statement to the police under coercion. The petition today alleged that the state police was now asking them to re-appear and re-record their statements and exerting pressure in their families. The apex court had on May 7 transferred the trial in the sensational Kathua gangrape and murder case of an eight-year-old girl from Jammu and Kashmir to Pathankot in Punjab, but refrained from handing over the probe to CBI saying there was no need as the investigation has been conducted and the chargesheet filed. The victim, from a minority nomadic community, had disappeared from near her home in a village close to Kathua in the Jammu region on January 10. Her body was found in the same area a week later. The state police has filed the main chargesheet against seven persons and a separate chargesheet against a juvenile in a court in Kathua district.

For Gujarat bootleggers, Barmer is new fav route

Development has its side effects and Barmer district is seeing a rather strange one. The district with its small stretch of border with Gujarat is fast turning into the new favoured route to carry out their illegal trade. Liquor smuggling routes to Gujarat largely pass through Rajasthan. The routes used by smugglers span across the entire state and are controlled by different smuggling gangs. The Rajasthan districts which are entry point for liquor from Haryana and Punjab are Sriganganagar, Hanumangarh, Alwar, Sikar and Jhunjhunu. And the six districts of Rajasthan having border with Gujarat; Udaipur, Banswara, Jalore, Sirohi, Dungarpur and Barmer from where consignments of the illegal liquor are sent into the ‘dry’ neighbouring state. According to sources in the excise department that did not wish to be named, “80% of the illegal liquor smuggled into Rajasthan is sent to Gujarat. Just about 10% to 15 % is used in Rajasthan and a miniscule amount gets caught.”Large part of the liquor passes through Rajasthan to Gujarat, while some part of it is sent into Madhya Pradesh to be further sent to Gujarat. NH 8 and NH11 continue to be the steady routes. But persons involved in smuggling of liquor now prefer the Barmer route into Gujarat. As per a person involved in this illegal trade, “The roads are smooth, well made and less patrolled. Entering through Hanumangarh and Ganganagar makes the perfect route for liquor smuggled from Punjab and Haryana.”It is believed that illegal liquor worth over 500 crore is smuggled to Gujarat through Rajasthan.
