The Delhi High Court on Tuesday agreed to hear a plea seeking a high-level committee probe on the coaching centre mishap that killed three UPSC aspirants in Old Rajinder Nagar.

The plea, which will be heard on July 31, was mentioned for urgent hearing on Tuesday before a bench of Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela.

The court, however, said he shall remove the objections, if any, and thereafter it will be listed for hearing on Wednesday.

The petition also sought to constitute a committee to probe and compile a report of coaching institutes that are running illegally and not following standard norms.

Who has been arrested so far?

The deaths of three students – Shreya Yadav from Uttar Pradesh, Tanya Soni from Telangana, and Nevin Dalwin from Kerala – have triggered a massive uproar among people with the Bharatiya Janata Party blaming the ruling Aam Aadmi Party government in Delhi over negligence.

So far, the Delhi Police have arrested seven people in connection to the case, including the driver of an SUV car who drove through the flooded road of Old Rajinder Nagar where the accident occurred.

DCP (Central) M Harshvardhan said, “Negligence has been established on the part of the arrested driver, who has been arrested in the Old Rajender Nagar case. He was driving the vehicle very fast, due to which the gate of the coaching centre broke.”

“Before he hit the building gate, a street vendor had tried to stop him,” he added.

Among the others who have been arrested in the case are the four basement owners, Rau Coaching Centre’s CEO and his coordinator.

MHA forms committee to probe matter

The Ministry of Home Affairs constituted a committee to inquire into the incident and said it would look into the reasons, take responsibility, suggest measures and recommend policy changes.

Meanwhile, Delhi Lt Governor VK Saxena announced Rs 10 lakh compensation for the kin of the three civil services aspirants, and assured action within 24 hours against officials of the Delhi Fire Services, police and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) found guilty of the incident.
