Data shows Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 180 out of 286 seats it fought directly against Congress in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The saffron party had won 257 such seats out of 374 in 2019.
Congress, meanwhile, managed to win 58 seats in the head-to-head battle in 2024, up from 31 seats in 2019.
BJP’s strike rate against the Congress fell from 68.7 per cent to 62.9 per cent in this election compared to 2019.
The strike rate is the percentage share of seats won by a party among those it contested.
In 2014, in the 370 seats where the BJP and Congress had a head-to-head battle, the former won 370 with a strike rate of 63.8 per cent and the latter won 36 with a 9.7 per cent strike rate.
Meanwhile, some of the BJP’s allies have secured a 100 per cent strike rate. Among the top performers are Chirag Paswan’s LJP (Ram Vilas) which won from all the four seats it had contested.
In Andhra Pradesh, Janasena won the two seats it had contested thus securing a strike rate of 100 per cent.
The Telegu Dasam Party (TDP) won 16 out of 25 seats and got a strike rate of 94.12 per cent.
The saffron party suffered setbacks in states like Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra as the Samajwadi Party and Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (Congress, Shiv Sena UBT, NCP SCP) gained.
BJP bagged only 33 seats, down from 63 in 2019 in UP and 9 in Maharashtra, down from 23.
As per the final results in this Lok Sabha elections, NDA won 294 seats, with the BJP at 240 seats. The opposition INDIA bloc won 232 seats, with the Congress winning 99 seats alone.
