An Indian fishing vessel collided with an Indian naval unit on November 21 off Goa’s coast, officials said on Friday.

Thirteen crew members were onboard the fishing vessel and the Indian Navy dispatched search and rescue teams. However, two fishermen are reportedly missing as the Indian Navy was able to rescue only 11 fishermen.

The Navy deployed six ships and an unknown number of surveillance aircraft in the rescue mission.

“An Indian fishing vessel Marthoma with a crew of 13 reportedly collided with an Indian Naval unit on November 21 about 70 nm North West of Goa,” an Indian Navy spokesperson said.

“Search and rescue efforts were immediately launched by the Indian Navy with six ships and aircraft. Eleven crew have been rescued so far,” he said.

Meanwhile, the rescue teams are currently trying to find the two missing fishermen.

The spokesperson said additional assets, including from the Coast Guard, have been diverted to the area of the incident to augment the rescue efforts.

The fishing vessel collided with a Scorpene-class submarine, a key asset of India’s naval capabilities. This advanced submarine is designed to perform diverse operations, such as anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare, intelligence collection, mine deployment, and area monitoring.

The cause of the collision is not known yet and it is currently under investigation.
