The Supreme Court vacation bench, on Tuesday, refused urgent hearing of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s plea for 7-day extension of his interim bail on health grounds. The court said it’s appropriate if the Chief Justice of India (CJI) takes a call on the listing of the plea.

The application for an urgent hearing of Kejriwal’s interim bail extension deadline by another seven days was mentioned before the bench of Justices JK Maheshwari and KV Viswanathan.

“Let the Chief Justice of India take a call,” Justice Maheshwari said, adding, “But why did not you mention before Justice Datta last week?”

Responding to the court, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, the lawyer representing Kejriwal said: “The prescription was given day before yesterday.”

The court then said: “This is heard and reserved matter. We cannot do anything. This matter was heard and reserved on May 17. Place before CJI for appropriate orders.”

Kejriwal, who was granted interim bail on May 10 by the Supreme Court for a period of 21 days to campaign for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, is supposed to surrender on June 2.

On Monday (May 27), Kejriwal filed a fresh petition in the Supreme Court, seeking a 7-day extension of his interim bail on health grounds.

His Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) said the Delhi CM was due to undergo PET-CT scan and other tests, as a result of which a seven-day extension of interim bail has been requested.

Delhi minister and AAP leader Atishi told the media: “He lost seven kilograms of weight soon after he was arrested. He has not regained that weight yet. His ketone level has come very high in the test. Doctors believe that more tests need to be done on him; therefore, this petition has been filed.”

The Delhi CM was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on March 21 in connection with a money laundering case related to the now-scrapped liquor excise policy of the AAP government.
