Delhi Airport’s Terminals 2 and 3 are expected to witness more rush as the operations at Terminal 1 are likely to begin at least one month later.
The newly revamped Terminal 1 of Delhi’s IGI Airport was scheduled to begin operations by mid-July, but now it has been delayed by more than a month after heavy rain on Friday (June 28) led to a portion of the roof at the old terminal collapse, killing one person.
Currently, structural engineers from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi are conducting a study to evaluate the safety and structural integrity of T1. This assessment is expected to take almost a month, following which a decision will be made regarding the reopening of the terminal, PTI quoted a senior government official as saying.
“The technical study of T1 is likely to take about a month. After the findings come in, a decision will be taken about recommencing operations there,” a report by PTI quoted an official as saying.
Where will Delhi Airport T1 flights arrive & depart?
A report by The Economic Times quoted officials saying, “In the meantime, all flights have been accommodated at terminals 2 and 3.”
The report also quoted a spokesperson of Delhi Airport saying that no flights have been “delayed or cancelled” and a cross-functional team is actively evaluating the situation and engaging with various stakeholders to ensure passengers’ safety as well as convenience.
The Delhi airport is managed by the Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), a consortium led by the GMR Group.
As many as 72 flights of IndiGo have shifted from Terminal 1, nearly half of them to Terminal 2. T2 can handle around 1,400 passengers per hour but new flights have choked the terminal, said airline officials.
Why are flights not operating from Delhi Airport Terminal 1?
T1 handles domestic flights and the terminal is used by IndiGo and SpiceJet. However, it has been closed indefinitely since June 28 after the roof collapse mishap.
After the incident, the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) said engineers from IIT Delhi, have been asked to “immediately assess the partial collapse of the canopy.”
Domestic operations of IndiGo and SpiceJet have been moved to T2 and T3 which are busier terminals.
Revamping of Delhi Airport T1
The Delhi Airport’s T1 had two separate buildings for departure and arrival. The revamp would have integrated the buildings, doubling capacity to 40 million passengers per year.
