The Supreme Court has granted interim bail to self-styled godman Asaram Bapu. He is in jail for multiple rape convictions.
In 2018, Asaram was sentenced to life imprisonment for raping a minor. In 2023, he was handed another life imprisonment sentence for rape of a minor.
Asaram was first arrested in 2013 and has been in jail for most of the time since. He has a vast following and has dozens of ashrams across India.
In its order, the Supreme Court said Asaram cannot meet his followers and the bail is only for medical purposes.
The SC has granted the bail till March 31. The bail comes within a week of Asaram returning to his jail in Rajasthan’s Jodhpur after 17 days of parole.
The SC also said that the police would only accompany Asaram for treatment but not dictate where he may seek treatment. Last year, Asaram had similarly sought treatment in Jodhpur and Maharashtra’s Pune.
