The relative of the victim said on Monday that the 22-year-old MTech student was allegedly fatally stabbed in Australia amid a brawl involving some Indian classmates.

He claimed that the event, which happened on Saturday night at approximately nine o’clock local time in Melbourne, also injured one other student.

Navjeet Sandhu was fatally attacked with a knife by another student, according to Yashvir, the victim’s uncle, when he attempted to mediate a fight between a few Indian students regarding a rent dispute.

“Navjeet’s friend (another Indian student) had asked him to accompany him to his house to pick up his belongings as he had a car. While his friend went inside, Navjeet heard some shouts and saw there was a fight. When Navjeet tried to intervene asking them not to fight, he was fatally stabbed in the chest with a knife,” Yashvir, who’ll retire from the Army in July, said.

He said that the supposed accused is a Karnali native, just like Navjeet.

According to Yashvir, the family was informed about the incident early on Sunday morning.

According to the victim’s relatives, Navjeet’s companion also suffered injuries during the incident.

The family, according to Yashvir, is shocked.

“Navjeet was a brilliant student and was to join his family in July for vacations,” he said.

Yashvir claims that Navjeet’s father, a farmer, sold 1.5 acres of their land to pay for his studies when he immigrated to Australia 1.5 years ago on a study visa.

“We urge the Government of India to help us to bring the body as soon as possible,” he said.
