The Center has given DRDO chief Dr. Samir Kamat a one-year extension, one day after the government announced a one-month extension for Chief of Army Staff Gen. Manoj Pande.

The Prime Minister’s Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has extended Dr. Kamat’s term, according to a statement released by the DRDO on Monday. His current term will end on May 31, 2025.

A two-year extension was also granted to Dr. Satheesh Reddy, the DRDO chief who succeeded Kamat in 2018. Originally scheduled to retire in August 2020, he served in that capacity until August 2022, at which point he was named the Defence Minister’s Scientific Advisor.

According to defense officials, Kamat’s term has been extended in order to maintain the DRDO’s ongoing reform initiative.

The changes are being implemented in accordance with the suggestions made by a committee chaired by K. Vijay Raghavan, a former government main scientific advisor.

In January of this year, he delivered a study titled “Redefining Defence Research and Development” to Rajnath Singh, the defense minister.

The changes, specifics of which have not yet been released to the public, are aimed at streamlining the DRDO and directing it more toward state-of-the-art technology for upcoming conflicts and tighter collaboration with the defense sector.
