Former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh’s funeral is taking place on Saturday, December 28, the issue of his memorial has got another angry voice, Congress leader and daughter of former president Pranab Mukherjee.
Sharmistha Mukherjee, referencing “baba” as her father, posted on X saying, “When baba passed away, Congress didnt even bother 2 call CWC 4 condolence meeting.”
Mukherjee’s angry comments came after Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge proposed for the last rites of the former PM to be held at his final resting place where a memorial, dedicated to him, can be constructed.
Accusing the Congress leadership of misleading her after her father’s death, she posted, “A senior leader told me it’s not done 4 Presidents. Thats utter rubbish as I learned later from baba’s diaries that on KR Narayanan’s death, CWC was called & condolence msg was drafted by baba only.”
In her post, Sharmishtha Mukherjee tagged a post by BJP’s CR Kesavan, who posted the whole letter by the Congress President to the PM, highlighting how the Congress did not give state honors and neither built a memorial after the death of former PM Narasimha Rao, who was from Congress.
The issue
Kharge’s letter came in response to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) who announced Manmohan Singh’s last rites to be held at New Delhi’s Nigambodh Ghat at 11.45am on Saturday with full state honours. Congress accused the government of insulting the country’s first Sikh prime minister by not finding a location for the cremation and memorial for him.
However, Amit Shah led Cabinet meeting discussed the issue after which the Union home minister told Kharge late on Friday night along with the family of the former PM that the government would allocate space for the memorial, the MHA statement said.
Dr. Manmohan Singh, who died on December 26 due to age-related illnesses in Delhi’s AIIMS, headed the country as its two-time PM back-to-back from 2004 and 2014 was a visionary and India’s greatest economic and political leader who transformed India economically in the 90’s decade while he was the then finance minister. His life and works continue to inspire the nation.
