Days after quitting the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), Champai Soren on Friday joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Soren, a veteran of the JMM, served as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand for five months earlier this year while incumbent CM Hemant Soren was in jail in a corruption case. Following Hemant’s release, Soren resigned as the chief minister.

Soren joined the BJP at an event in Jharkhand’s capital Ranchi in the presence of senior BJP leader and Union minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

After he joined the BJP, Soren told ANI, “I will work for the development of Jharkhand and we will stop infiltration from Bangladesh. I will fulfil whatever responsibilities the party will assign me.”

Earlier this month, Soren announced in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that he would be parting ways from JMM and charting a new path for himself after suffering disrespect at the hands of the party leadership.

Soren said that the party leadership had cancelled all of his events and had called the meeting of the legislative party without informing him. He said he was hurt and could not complain to anyone as he was among the senior-most leaders of the party and there were not many people to approach. He then went on to say that he told the party’s gathering that he would soon be starting a new chapter of his life.

Then, earlier this week, he met senior BJP leaders including Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of the BJP said Soren would join the party on August 30 (Friday).
