Two commandoes of the Central Reserve Police Force’s (CRPF) CoBRA unit were killed on Sunday in a Naxalite attack in Chhattisgarh’s Sukma district.
The commandoes were killed in an improvised explosive device (IED) explosion in Sukma’s Timmapuram village between Silger and Tekalgudem camps of security force, PTI cited the police as saying. The blast took place around 3 pm.
The CoBRA stands for Commando Battalion for Resolute Action. It is a jungle warfare specialist unit within the CRPF which is specifically tasked with operation against Naxalite guerillas in Central India.
The attack took place at a time when an advance company of 201 CoBRA battalion was patrolling from Silger camp under as a part of its Road Opening Party (ROP) duty towards Tekalgudem, said a senior police officer to the PTI.
The officer said, “Naxalites triggered an IED blast targeting the truck that claimed the lives of constable Shailendra (29), a resident of Uttar Pradesh, and driver Vishnu R (35) hailing from Kerala. The truck did not have any other occupant.”
Reinforcements were rushed to the site after the attack was reported. A search operation has also been launched in the area.
Following the news of two fatalities, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai said on X (formerly Twitter) that the martyrdom of the two soldiers will not go in vain. He further said that the Naxalites were resorting to such “cowardly” acts as they are being crushed by the ongoing anti-Naxal operations.
”Received the sad news of the demise of 2 CoBRA soldiers in an IED blast triggered by Naxalites in Sukma district. I pray to God to rest the departed soul in peace and to give strength to their families. Naxals are frustrated with the ongoing anti-naxalite operation in Bastar region and have been committing such cowardly acts out of frustration. The martyrdom of the soldiers will not go in vain. We will not sit quiet until Naxalism is eliminated,” said Sai in the post in Hindi.
