Passengers, who were scheduled to travel out of the national capital, on Friday morning from Delhi Airport Terminal-1 but could not due to the temporary shutdown following a roof collapse will get a full refund, Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu said after personally inspecting the site.

“Passengers will receive full refunds or have the option to rebook on alternative flights and routes,” the minister said.

At least one person was killed and four others were said to be injured after a portion of the roof of the old departure forecourt of Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport Terminal-1 collapsed on cars, including taxis, around 5 am on Friday.

Following the incident, the Delhi Airport announced that all IndiGo and SpiceJet flights departing from T1 have been cancelled till 2 pm of June 28.

Later, the Delhi Airport informed SpiceJet all arrival and departure (planned for T-1) are allocated for T-3, and all arrival and departure (planned for T-1) are distributed amongst T-2 and T-3.

‘Very serious incident’

“This morning at 5, a very unfortunate incident happened at Terminal-1 Delhi Airport. A section of the canopy outside the airport building collapsed due to heavy rain all night. I express my condolences to the life that has been lost in this tragic incident, and along with that, we are taking care of the four people who are injured. As soon as the incident came to our notice, we reacted immediately and sent the emergency response team, the fire safety team, CISF, and NDRF teams for a thorough inspection to ensure no other casualties were there,” the minister said.

“The situation is under control. The rest of the terminal building has been closed and everything is being thoroughly inspected. Regarding the flights, we have informed the airlines that passengers should not face any inconvenience and all flights till 2 pm have been cancelled. Passengers will get a full refund and if they want to travel on alternative routes, that is also being provided,” Naidu said.

The minister also said that all relevant agencies including DGCA, BCAS, CISF, Delhi Police and NDRF have been working in close coordination and putting their “best efforts.”

Naidu also informed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is “closely monitoring the situation and has assured us full support.”

The government has also announced compensation of Rs 20 lakh for the deceased and Rs 3 lakh for the injured.
