With the election of three-time BJP MP Om Birla as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Prime Minister Narendra Modi passed the first big political test of his third term on Wednesday.
Birla defeated eight-time Kerala MP and opposition candidate for the post, K Suresh, to secure his second consecutive term as the Lok Sabha Speaker on June 26. He won the election via voice vote.
Congress Rahul Gandhi, who was declared the leader of the opposition on Tuesday evening by his party, accompanied PM Modi as they congratulated Birla on his election.
What PM Modi & LoP Rahul Gandhi said after Om Birla’s election as LS Speaker?
1 – “It’s a matter of honour that you have been elected to this chair for the second time… I look forward to your guidance for the next five years during the Amrit Kaal,” PM Modi said.
2- “Aapke chehre par ye meethi meethi muskaan poore sadan ko prasann rakhti hai (Your sweet smile keeps the entire House happy),” the PM told Om Birla.
3 – “Becoming the Speaker for the second time is a record in itself. Balram Jakhar got the opportunity to serve as the Speaker for the second term after five years and today, you are doing the same,” PM Modi said.
4 – “I am confident that under your leadership, the 18th Lok Sabha will fulfill the expectations of the people,” PM Modi told Speaker Om Birla.
5 – Congratulating Birla, Gandhi said: “I would like to congratulate you for your successful election… I congratulate you on behalf of the entire INDI alliance.”
6 – “This House represents the voice of the people of India… Of course the government has political power, but the Opposition also represents the voice of India’s people,” the Congress leader said.

8 – “I am confident you will allow us to speak in the House. I am confident that you will allow us to represent our voice, allow us to speak, to represent the voice of people of India,” Gandhi told Birla during his address in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.
9 – “The idea that you can run the House efficiently by silencing the voice of the Opposition is a non-democratic idea. This election has shown that the people of India expect the Opposition to defend the Constitution of this country,” Gandhi said.
10 – “We are confident that by allowing the Opposition to speak, you will do your duty of defending the Constitution of India,” the newly-appointed LoP told Speaker Om Birla.
