The first phase of Jharkhand assembly elections have come to an end with the state recording a voter turnout of 64.86 per cent till 5 pm. The highest turnout was registered in the district of Lohardaga while the lowest was recorded in the capital city of Ranchi.
The faceoff is between the BJP-NDA alliance and the ruling party of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha. The elections come after Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren reinstated himself in the post after he secured bail, angering the interim CM Champai Soren. Champai later joined the BJP.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a rally in Deogarh where he took potshots at the ruling party saying that JMM has allowed infiltrators to settle in the state, stripping off the rights of the tribal people.
Meanwhile, Hemant Soren claimed that the saffron party is going “all-out” to malign Jharkhand’s image.
The second phase of polling will be held on November 20.
