A shocking incident of crime has come to fore in Karnataka, where a 32-year-old man allegedly beheaded a 16-year-old girl and took it along with him after authorities stopped their proposed marriage because she was minor.

The incident took place on Thursday at Surlabbi village in Kodagu district of Karnataka, police said on Friday.

The accused, identified as Prakash, fled from the crime spot and is still missing.

According to police, the minor girl, Meena, had just cleared her Class 10 examination this year and her engagement was fixed on Thursday.

However, someone called up the Child Helpline number and informed the officials about the illegal ceremony.

On receiving the complaint, a team of the Child Welfare Department reached the girl’s house and counselled both the families saying if they go ahead with the marriage, it would attract provisions of the POCSO Act and Child Marriage Act since the girl was underaged.

Both families agreed that they will only get Meena married to Prakash after she attains the age of 18. The officials and the groom’s family then left the girl’s place.

However, around 5:30 pm on Thursday, Prakash came again at Meena’s house and after barging in, he kicked her father and assaulted her mother with a sharp-edged weapon.

He then dragged Meena outside for about 100 metres, chopped off her head and fled the scene with it, a report by PTI quoted Superintendent of Police (Kodagu), Ramarajan K, as saying.

The girl’s parents were admitted to a hospital. Her mother was treated for her injuries, while her father did not receive any visible cut injuries, the cop said.

“All efforts are being taken to nab the accused,” he added.

The victim has three sisters and two brothers and she was the youngest, police further said.
