A shocking incident has come to fore from Madhya Pradesh’s Chhindwara district, where a 27-year-old man axed eight members of his family including his wife and mother, and later hanged himself from a tree.
According to a report by Times of India, the incident took place around 2:30 am on Wednesday (May 29) when all the victims were deep in sleep.
The youth, identified as Dinesh Gond alias Bhura, reportedly got married about eight days back.
In the early hours of Wednesday, he took an axe and attacked his wife Varsha (23), mother Siyabai (55), brother Shravan Kumar (35) and Shravan’s wife Baratobai (30).
He then killed his 16-year-old sister Parvati, 5-year-old nephew Krishna and nieces Sewnti (4) and Deepa (1) with the axe.
A report by NDTV said all eight members died on the spot.
After killing these eight people, he attempted to axe other members of his extended family, but a woman, who had woken up to attend nature’s call saw him. By then, the youth’s neighbour had also entered the house, hearing the screams of the victims.
Seeing his neighbours, the youth fled from the spot and later was found hanging from a tree, about 100 metres away from the crime scene.
According to police, the youth was suffering from mental illnesses. Locals alleged that his condition had worsened after his marriage.
The police have begun an investigation and looking into the reason behind the attack which is not known yet.
The incident took place in Bodal Kachhar village which falls under the jurisdiction of the Mahuljhiri police station.
Talking to media, Inspector General of Police (IG) Jabalpur Zone, Anil Singh Kushwaha, said: “The accused was mentally ill and was undergoing treatment… He was suffering from Schizophrenia, after consultation with doctors we came to know that a person suffering from the disease may attack people, later he realised that he committed a mistake and died by suicide. So prima facie it seems that this may have happened in this case as well… We are investigating the case.”
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav expressed grief over the incident and said an investigation would be done into the matter.
“This is an unfortunate incident. I have asked one of our ministers Sampatiya Uikey to visit Chhindwara. She will meet the members of the family. An investigation of the incident will be done. We will do everything possible for the victims,” the chief minister said.
The ToI report quoted Dinesh’s uncle, Talvi Singh Patel, saying: “He (Dinesh) lost his mental balance a year ago. However, after treatment, he had been living a normal life. We got him married this year on May 21. However, just a couple of days after the marriage, he developed psychological problems again. He axed all the people of his family who were sleeping in the courtyard.”
“One of my elder sisters-in-law had woken up to attend nature’s call when she saw him with an axe and tried to snatch it. He then attacked her grandson, who sustained injuries. My sister-in-law called for her son Apatiya, who was sleeping inside, and then Dinesh escaped and later hanged himself from a tree,” Patel further said.
