Mahatma Gandhi statue in Italy vandalised by a pro-Khalistani group, according to reports. It was scheduled to be inaugurated during PM Modi’s visit to Italy for the G7 Summit.

The Khalistani terrorists also made graffiti on the base of the statue and wrote a reference to Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India has taken up the matter with relevant Italian authorities, said Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra during a media interaction.

Talking about the incident, foreign secretary Kwatra said the Indian authorities raised the matter with Italian officials. “We have taken up the issue of vandalisation of Mahatma Gandhi’s statue with the Italian authorities. Necessary action has been taken,” he said.

Reacting over the development, India’s ambassador to Italy Vani Rao said, “The incident was in a town called Brindisi, which is in southern Italy. The Italian local authorities have taken action to clean up the pedestal of the bust. We have also taken up our concerns with them immediately. We have requested them to locate those who are responsible and take action against them under the local law.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to Italy on Thursday to attend the annual summit of G7 advanced economies. The G7 summit, to be held in the luxury resort of Borgo Egnazia in Italy’s Apulia region from June 13 to 15, is likely to be dominated by the raging war in Ukraine and the conflict in Gaza.
