India’s mobile manufacturing industry is gaining global attention, thanks to the Make in India initiative. Big companies like Samsung and Apple are setting up large factories in the country, making India the world’s second-largest exporter of mobile phones. With Samsung’s mega factory in Noida and Apple moving some iPhone production to Tamil Nadu, India is becoming a key player in tech manufacturing.

Samsung’s mega factory in Noida

Samsung has built the world’s largest mobile manufacturing plant in Noida, which has doubled its production capacity from 68 million to 120 million phones a year. This factory is part of Samsung’s Make for the World strategy, producing phones not just for India but also for other countries in the SAARC region and beyond.

By focussing on local research and development, Samsung is customising products to meet the needs of Indian consumers. This blend of local expertise with global goals supports India’s aim for self-reliance and boosts both local and export production.

Apple’s shift to India: The iPhone 16 production

Apple is changing its manufacturing strategy by moving some production from China to India. For the first time, the new iPhone 16 series, including the premium Pro and Pro Max models, will be assembled in India at Foxconn’s facility in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. Many Indian workers are being specially trained to assemble these advanced devices, showing India’s rising importance in Apple’s supply chain.

Apple’s shift is part of a larger plan to diversify its production. Currently, $14 billion worth of iPhones are being made in India, making up 14 per cent of Apple’s global production. The company plans to expand this production to include other products like AirPods and iPads, further proving its commitment to India.

India on the global stage

The quick growth of India’s mobile manufacturing industry showcases the success of the Make in India initiative. Companies like Samsung and Apple are not only creating jobs but also improving India’s technological skills and export capabilities. As more foreign investments come in, India is changing from relying on imports to becoming a global manufacturing centre. This shift reinforces the spirit of Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) and strengthens India’s position in the global tech industry.
